CX-90, with 3rd row seats folded down only seats 4 passengers as the second row has 2 Captain’s chairs instead of a bench seat. CX-70 has a bench seat in the second row so it can seat a total of 5 passengers and still have a lot of cargo room. That’s why people would go for CX-70. Thank you Mazda for thinking about us!
Me and my wife just bought one and it’s just us. We find ourselves hauling large stuff from time to time and really wanted a big car without feeling like we’re in a soccer mom car. This does have a more sporty look to it compared to the CX-90 and we fell absolutely in love with the melting copper paint on the turbo s premium trim. Now, we have been eyeing down this car before the reveal and we were disappointed in it being the exact same size as the CX-90 because we did hope for something on the smaller end (CX-60 size would have been perfect), but it’s so fun to handle and doesn’t feel as big as it actually is when it comes to the driving dynamics. I know they left the cup holders in the back, which I also initially gave crap about, but I actually think they’re useful and why not? Better than open space when you already have such a large trunk. I also find all the storage space amazing for organizing the car underneath for where the 3rd row would have been. Overall, I’m really happy with the purchase (first Mazda owner) and I’m excited to see what they’ll do next with the line up for upcoming models.
I don't have children. At most, with friends, I would have 5 people in my car and that's incredibly rare. But I'm a skier and will often drive 2 or 3 of us with a ton of gear on 6 hour road trips. While currently driving a CX-5, those are the times I wish I had more cargo space. That's what makes the CX-70 so tempting for me. If more than 5 people are going somewhere, we can just take a second car. Folding down a third row means there's still a third row taking up valuable space. Even having removable seats doesn't work for me with very limited space to store them. Sure, I wish the 70 offered unique styling and lower pricing than the 90, but it's understandable why they did it this way.
The whole reason I got the 70, I have no use at all for a third row but I can definitely use the space, and I like the feel of the big car. I also understand the naming, it’s for a different audience, makes it easier to search and talk about
That is the demographic they are going for. But price it accordingly. They are using the "remove third row option" to increase margin. There is still a path forward and that is to introduce a CX60 which is a two row, and in between the size of this and the CX50. I think they came out with this as a large two row premium SUV and didn't want to have to retool all new chassis and interior components. Mazda has to reuse as much of their designs as possible to economize. After all, they aren't the size of Toyota.
@@DavidGoldman-qj8szThere’s additional cargo space in the bins under the floor where the seats would be. Every square inch counts. Again, why bother dealing with folding seats when they will never, ever be used.
Do you live in Colorado? If you do, jump on it! You get the federal tax credit, the state tax credit additional dealership credits. I leased one for 310 a month after taxes for 24 months. You can’t beat that.
I don’t quite understand why you don’t understand why someone would want a CX 90 with only two rows. This is exactly what we’d want! A large SUV with large cargo space instead of a third row. We’re empty nesters who like road trips. More cargo space is what we need.
Me too. the two row SUVs are just too small if you want to stuff some fairly large boxes or items in the back. I have NO need for useless, tiny, uncomfortable third row that just takes up valuable storage space. You fold it down, fine, still takes up a foot or more of vertical space. I think A LOT of us want something like this. My only issue is mediocre MPG, so hoping for a V6 (smaller than usual) hybrid or a large I-4 hybrid. That said, I love my 2003 V-6 Accord, and don't want anything to do with 4cyl turbo money pits. That said, these Mazda's like so many SUV/CUVs today, to dang swoopy in back, which takes away from internal storage dimensions. Something old school Jeep Cherokee (but not a Cherokee...junk) boxy would maximize the site of items you can jam in there. I like the look of the R1S, but not really in to spendin $80k. I could buy a ginormous and expensive Yukon or Escalade or something, but the cost to own is...enough to stop ones heart. maybe 10mpg and mediocre reliability
Third row folds down flush so it's exactly like the cx 70 when you need more cargo room. Better resale with third row options not to mention more seating capacity when you need it. I thought the same thing but when I saw how the third row folds flush I bought the cx 90 and whent in determined to buy the cx 70.
If they made it 5-6" shorter it would be lighter, cheaper and drive better while only giving up a small amount of cargo space. Check out the cx80 announced for Europe, 4" shorter and could easily be made as a 2 row. This cx 70 is literally just a cx90 with minor tweaks.
I didn't notice it until about halfway through the video, but I like the filming method using the green lighting on the background. It makes objects in the foreground really pop. Keep up the great work. I am currently shopping for a new car (I am leaning toward a Honda Pilot, but... $$$), and I love these videos. They help out so much.
As someone who wants a cx-70 I will explain the difference to me. First it has a sportier look nicer wheels and less chrome compared to the 90. Also I only have 2 kids so I don’t need a 3rd row. But we do take trips and have a dog so we need the cargo room. For me it’s perfect. Also the 70 doesn’t have the cloth stitching on the dash like the 90 does. Lastly getting a floor mat for the back is easier since it’s only one size. If there was a third row it would make the mat either too small or it would have to be rolled up. Anyway. Looking forward to getting one soon. Great review
"Why would anyone buy a two row large SUV?" - AMD, I can answer that question because that's exactly what I'm going to do. My wife and I are close to 60 years old and have no kids. We do, however, have two medium sized (60 lbs) dogs. The dogs go with us everywhere so we need a vehicle that can carry two dogs crates side by side in the cargo area and still have room for suitcases, a cooler, extra dog crates for the hotel, event site, camp site,, etc. in the 2nd row (which we always fold down flat). Right now I have a minivan, but am looking for a vehicle with a nicer build, more luxury, and more tech. The next vehicle I get will be a new GX 550 (when dealers have available stock) - specifically the 2 row Overtrail trim. So, while I may not represent a large percentage of the population, just know that there are still quite a few people like me that consider a 3rd row to be a negative, even if they can be folded down. Because when folded down, the third row still occupies cargo space that I'd rather have. Oh, and as for resale value, when you keep vehicles for 10 years and 150,000+ miles like I do the difference in resale value between a 3 row and 2 row SUV is negligible.
I wouldn’t need the third row ever, I’ve considered this to replace my CX50. We store a lot of stuff in the trunk lol especially a massage table since my wife does mobile massage and we need all the space possible. That table never leaves and we shop at Costco pretty often. Might be most ideal for us unlike other families lol It might have more room to negotiate on price too since most people will get the CX 90.
@@Papolucho702 If I were you, I'd go for the CX-90 and just fold down the 3rd row. The resale value might be better as well because of the presence of that 3rd row. Mazda has some good finance and lease deals right now for the 90.
AMD has a good point. If you wanted a 2-row SUV they could have made it smaller. Otherwise get a cx-90 and just fold down rear seat and bam you have the same amount of storage as cx-70 lol
The fact that Mazda is dropping start/stop and cylinder deactivation makes me want another one. Not this one but another. Thank you love the reviews. Great presentation.
I saw that about the CX 5 on this channel. I guess it’s across-the-board. I thought it was a temporary thing. Do you know if they are dropping it for good? I’m possibly looking at a CX 5 for my wife and do not want it.
@@gregjoubert5118 Not sure. They can say what they want about the shortages but they have problems and are costing the company money in warranty work. I have not yet met someone who says they are looking for one with it lol. Go naturally aspirated if they have it. I think they just don't want to admit to the failures out loud. They all have that 2.5 and ours has been flawless. Really nice vehicles.
@gregjoubert5118 I recently bought a 2024 CX5 (non-turbo) and it has istop/cylinder deactivation. Manufactured in Japan in April 2024. Might be different for turbo models.
Another great detailed video as usual. I gotta say I love that it doesn’t have a third row if you want a third row get a minivan. Minivans are great for that. These so-called sport utility vehicles, (station wagons), need some sort of utility and no third seat gives you a lower floor.
Actually this was made for me. I asked for a 2 row SUV with maximum cargo space for my reselling business. I will never need the 3rd row. The sportiness and luxury and driving experience complete the package.
I've had the PHEV for a year and drive in EV mode in town. It's always very quiet, as quiet as my Cayenne. EV mode is designed to drive in town which you don't really the engine to kick in, there are 2-3 seconds delay for the engine to kick in if you push really hard. If you want engine to assist more frequently for passing, you should drive in normal mode and it's very seamless for engine to kick in and shutdown, you may not even notice it unless you watch the tach.
There's less than a sq foot of storage the the cubby underneath. Probably a couple pickle ball paddles and pickle balls. The value of a third row compared to empty space is way more. The CX-70 should be cheaper by a lot.
@@coalbuster the cubby underneath isn't the same size as what the seat would fit under. For whatever reason Mazda didn't make the cubby in the 70 as big.
@@Rockytop8118 I don't understand why they would do that. Seems like a mistake or at least a missed opportunity. My point is CCN said why would you want a large SUV without a third-row seat. I can think of a lot of reasons. Mainly, I want to use the space they fold down into for storage or, for removable seats (which I had for my van), I don't want to have to store them in my garage.
exactly! I have the cx9 for 6+ years now. I used 3rd row 3 times, and all those times wouldn;t be a big deal to not have the 3rd row. I do need larger cargo space for our road trips.
That is the point he was trying to make in the video, why does this car exist when you can spend the same amount of money on the model up and for those rare occasions you might need a 3rd row you have it.
IKEA, airport with luggage, Costco, Golf and Hockey, and the list goes on. And that's only me not including my wife's need transferring stuff from storage.
The CX-70 is a sporty model (blacked out trim, painted exterior trim to body color) compared the the CX-90 which is a family model. The CX-70 has different suspension config and some nicer colors not available in the CX-90. My kids are in college so I don't need a 3rd row so I'm looking at the top CX-70 model.
Just dropped off my CX-90 PHEV P Plus loaner after logging about 200 miles on it (my CX-9 had a valve cover gasket leaking oil). I previously drove PHEV about a year ago and found the hybrid drive and transition between modes a bit unrefined. However this time I was extremely impressed by how seamless transition was between hybrid and ev. Most of the time I couldn't tell unless I really stepped on the gas or was pushing the car in the sport mode. The 2.5l does sound a bit coarse past 4k RPM, but as mentioned the engine is not the latest generation and I would rather have something reliable than otherwise. Overall I was extremely impressed and I think Mazda is moving in the right direction with updating and refining the new inline 6, PHEV and 8sp transmission and probably when its time to replace my CX-9 I will go with PHEV instead of Turbo S. Finally CX-9 and CX-90 are ment to be used a large 5 seater, than a real 3 row. The 3rd row is for occasional short trips, considering the size of average family thats about the majority.
I'll tell you why I went with the CX70 vs the CX90...I lease my vehicles and even though the MSRP's are the same, the monthly lease payment was quite a bit cheaper per month for the CX70. Also, I only have two kids, so didn't need a third row and would rather have the dedicated storage space. Would I have preferred a little different shape in the rear quarter panel/C-Pillar to differentiate it from the 90? Sure, I guess...but I'm fine with the configuration the way it is.
As it's just my wife and I and three dogs this is perfect for us. And the price point honestly is great compared to others. We got a fairly loaded one for $44k. This is the same price as a loaded Rogue and cheaper than the Wrangler and the Passport while being nicer than everything else. Also I can't stand three row SUVs. If I want a van I'll buy a van.
I think Mazda didn't have the funds to make a drastically different model here. They probably decided it was more cost effective to use what they already designed and just delete the 3rd row. It's still a beautiful looking vehicle, but I was expecting a slightly longer and wider version of the CX-60.
@@GooseVan ... I think most people were expecting the CX60 with the same powertrains as the CX90. I don't really know why they decided against that, but with the amount of negative feedback, the Mazda CX70 may be shortlived and we may eventually get the CX60/80 here in N.A.
The appeal was that they can market this as a 2 row and make it automatically the largest 2 row available - think ford edge, chevy blazer, grand cherokee, ect. It's pure marketing
Great review as always . Personally I don’t see an issue with CX-70 having only two rows , grand Cherokee, Subaru Outback and 4Runner are similar size vehicles and come in two rows of seats. The only vehicles that have a usable 3rd row are minivans or very large SUV’s , I just don’t see the point of a 3rd row where only small children can sit. I would pick CX 70 over CX 90.
My family is very tall. Would have loved this if they kept the cx90 size but rearranged everything to give more legroom in the 1st and 2nd rows and move the door pillar back as well.
The purpose of the 70 is to make it sportier w/o all the chrome and the extra row AND still maintain the cargo space. Genius! Super sharp and appealing.
But its's not sportier. It's not any lighter, nimbler or "sportier." No adjustments to the powertrain or suspension to reflect that. It has black accents, chrome wheels, and different vents and that does not make anything sportier. It appears darker, but you can pay an auto shop a few hundred dollars to black out your accents and come out paying less for more in the CX-90 given the better discounts and offers at this point.
@Rockytop8118 Agree to disagree. It's much better looking w/o all the chrome and the altered front. I find it a waste of time to buy a brand new car and then go to a shop to make it look how you want.
@@Rockytop8118 different front and rear bumpers make a big difference. It’s also what makes an S5 and C63 *look* different to a C200. If you can’t see that, that’s on you.
I almost bought a Mazda. I like the fact it has a regular transmission, but beyond that I know nothing about them. What is that nob on the console for? You know the kids will be playing with it. I love your honest videos; keep making them.
@@lilred1107Don’t get me wrong: I love Audi (it’s my favorite luxury brand), but Mazda is more reliable from a maintenance standpoint. You also get 80-90% of the Audi for 20-30% less. Some people may be willing to splurge for the Audi, but others might go for the Mazda as a value proposition.
@JBM425 I agree with you on the reliability, however Mazda has some ways to go to truly get the luxury cachet down. Their approach for all vehicles is sporty with the CX70/90 having a luxury look and it stops there, there needs to be a true feel of luxury from the ride, handling and even browsing through the infotainment system (to which Mazda's is trash at this point)
@@JBM425 I think Audis are getting up there.. my last on lasted to 95K miles.. no issues.. I did all the regular oil changes, etc.. the 2.0T engine is really good in my opinion.
There is one very simple reason why Mazda saw fit to create a new model designation for the CX-90 without a third row: in the US auto market, there are almost no SUVs offered with 2 or 3 rows of seating. An automaker is more inclined to offer two different models than one model with both options.
I know Toyota and Lexus is the most reliable, BUT I refuse to play the dealership game its ridiculous. And if you are in Toronto, Toyotas and Lexus being on the car theft hit list definitely makes Mazdas more appealing. Not to mention Mazda's interior is on par with Lexus.
For now 😂soon mazda will be on the high theft list with the way their making their cars luxury appeal. Don't be surprise when your insurance start increasing too for Mazda cx70 cx90
Mazda is definitely not as reliable. There’s a thing called statistics. However, I also refuse to pay ridiculous prices for Toyotas… especially right now with the issues with the Tundra and the Tacoma.
I find the fact that the front end is slightly more appealing and sportier than the CX 90, and the availability of a bench seat in second row would make me select the CX 70 over the CX 90
The CX-70 has a bench second row, preferable to captain's chairs that are in the CX-90 and also the Cx-70 rear deck is completely flat and the CX-90 does not go completely flat when the 3rd row is stowed. I don't need or want a 3rd row. I bought the Cx-70 PHEV as an alternative to CX-50 or CX-5.
I know it's just psychological, but I would choose the CX-70 over the 90 just because a third row seat, even folded, gives me the vibe that I'm driving a school bus rather than a near-luxury car.
I drive a vehicle with a third row, and I've never had passengers in that row. I keep those seats flat, so that I can have more storage. If I could have bought my particular vehicle without a third row, I would have rather done that. I may be in the minority, but I prefer the larger SUV without a third row. As far as pricing, I agree with Car Care Nut.
The CX-70 seems like such a missed opportunity. All they needed was to shorten it a little bit. My wife hates the size of the CX-90 but I want the mild hybrid system that you can't get with the CX-5/CX-50.
I think they are so behind on tech. I love Mazda and my mazda3 2019, but they really have got to jump on the hybrid train sooner than later. They need time to develop and gain reputatoon
The gentleman is very informative especially when looking at the auto from a service technician's point of view. The gentleman is mistaken about the pricing on the CX70 and CX90. All like models are $500 more for the CX90. TURBO PREFERRED, TURBO PREMIUM, TURBO PREMIUM PLUS, TURBO S PREMIUM, TURBO S PREMIUM PLUS. The CX90 does have a turbo select model which is the least expensive and is not available as a CX70. according to Mazda's website.
3rd row delete was smart. Families with more than 3 kids are very rare nowadays. So you get the utility of being able to actually store things in the back of the vehicle. This with the hybrid system design makes this extremely compelling. I might be able to afford this on the used market in 6 years.
But you dont lose anything by getting cx-90 with the option of having 3rd row and just keeping it folded down. And there`s no price difference. So makes no sense.
Trouble is you don't get any more storage behind 2nd row than CX-90 with 3rd row folded. And the space behind 2nd row is barely more than RAV4 or CRV. For a vehicle the dimensions of a minivan, that's bad.
Ive test drove the CX70.I liked this one due to the size and not having the third row.I didnt care for the CX5,nice but to small. So I think Mazda did a great job for creating this larger size in a two. Some people liked the larger size SUV.Plus it looks amazing very classy
Add-on: Mazda recommended Premium Fuel, Base line trim don't have wireless Android Auto/Car Play on 60k CAD car. Last thing, it hold 70L fuel so don't surprise when you go gas station or your EV range drop fast. The most questioning thing people asking is: " why they have 4 cup holder in the back of row seat on cx-70?
So I have a Passport (2021), and it versus the Pilot is a very similar comparison with the Mazda.; The Passport at that time was a couple of grand more. So, your question is why sacrifice the third row? Well for one I'm single, and I wanted the J35 engine. I don't need video monitors in the backseat, nor do I want them. I don't need a com device to talk to ppl in the back rows. I just wanted a reliable, spacious Crossover that wasn't designed to haul around kids. It's really that simple, and worth every extra peeny imo. Now, only if it was two door.
The advantage in the Passport is the shorter length and true 5-passenger making it more focused. In the Mazda case, it has the same CX-90 w/o the 3rd row.
Ahmed, keepin' it real !!! Thank you. Ahmed, I hate cars that turn off and on when they come to a stop. Am I stupid? When engines turn off and on do they really save energy? Are they really better for emissions, gas mileage, and the environment? Somehow I doubt it.
I would think that turning off the engine, especially in a hybrid, will reduce emissions. I have a RAV4 hybrid and in heavy traffic I appreciate that that engine turns off. I can then creep forward slowly on battery. This is much more relaxing and quiet. Now in larger pickups, non hybrid, with this turn off feature it gets really annoying to have the big V8 shut off at every stop sign.
They technically do save fuel and emissions, but the savings on average, is negligible. The technology was put in place originally, more or less, to game the EPA.
Here in the Dallas market, CX-90s are being discounted $4000-5000. CX-70s are barely being discounted at all. Seems like more than enough reason for me to live with an unused 3rd row
Happy as a clam owner of a CX 70. I thought the same thing, why not a get a 3 row, you’ll never know. But after driving them both, the 70 felt better and closer to my Mazda3 (despite it being a boat of a car).I don’t have any kids, it’s my girlfriend, and our two pooches. We tend to travel a lot so have large space to start and being able to fold the back seats gives as all the space we need. To me, they fold better than the 90. I’m not going to sell this car anytime soon so the resale value is going to be low regardless if it has 2 or 3 rows. One thing that does have my worries is changing the spark plugs and the serpentine belt. I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. Absolutely love the car and don’t regret it one bit!
I had to bail out on this review because of the constant cx90 reference. We all know it's the same and we all scratch our heads. However I think this vehicle is a great opportunity to discuss mazdas greatest challenge. CAFE standards. It's why we don't get the cx 60 like other countries, and why it's very likely that the next cx5 will only have the PHEV engine on offer. Just a thought. I'm a big fan of your channel. Thanks for your reviews and knowledge.
@Play4Vida a utuber cant change anything. But it does answer the question as to why mazda made the 70 instead of giving us the cx60 we all want. There's a big demand for mid size 2 row suv with big power. By re badging the 90 it sets up performance platforms for the future.
I'd love a two row large SUV. I have a Tahoe - the third row is useless to me, and takes up a bunch of cargo space. Yes it's odd to call this Mazda a different model, but i don't see what the drama is all about.
Thank you!! … For calling it what it is every time. Mazda said and enthusiasts were waiting for the cx70 to be a cx60 but bigger not a cx90 at same size, minus 3rd row seats and dechromimg the grill
It is not as big of a deal as you make it sound. Many cars have an option for a 3rd row, and it can be frustrating when shopping for them. The GX460 comes to mind. Maxda is calling the two-row version a different model to compensate. However, it would have been nice if they had increased the second-row legroom in the CX70. However, keeping everything the same reduces costs.
It’s been my third week of owning CX70 GT-P (inline 6) and I am so happy with this beauty. Yes, it is not perfect. But its imperfections feel like imperfections of youth. Yes, the solution around newly acquired space at the back is quite immature. Okay. But it’s a damn beauty in its imperfections. It clearly stands out on any parking lot next to way more mature and expensive cars. X5 (G05) does not seem an obvious choice to me anymore, moreover they get truly ugly in a couple of recent restylings)
Cool to hear you differentiate between the gas engine and electric motor. Years ago an engineer corrected me on the difference. Never even thought about it, I guess a motor moves and an engine produces power. So is a transmission a motor? Beats me.
I drive a 2024 CX-5. Got to be honest, if I needed lots of cargo capacity - I'd take a 70 over a 90. Truth is, I don't even want the option of being able to tote extra passengers. I do question the naming of this vehicle though. Should just sell the 90 as a two or three row option.
Id like one but with the straight 6 without a turbo in a lower trim model, i'm ok with 230-250hp in this vehicle, im not racing anyone and im not flooring it to the red light plainly in sight 100 yards from me like half the morons on the road.
Not a bad idea for a base model. But with ever stricter government regulations manufacturers are bring forced into lower displacement engines without turbos. So a base model with this would probably be their 2.5L turbo.
You didn’t waste my time because you validated why I don’t have one. I own a 2016 CX-5 with 100K miles and it is the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I wanted a two-row with more room which you delivered but price it accordingly.
Yep, I agree my cx5 select is PERFECT for all my needs. AMD is correct, this is not making sense & they need to go back to the drawing board on these models. Enough said !!!
As an empty-nester... the CX-70 makes MUCH more sense to us. We want all the cargo space, but not give up the 2nd row space that the CX-90 sacrifices incase we rarely need it.
I don't understand your review this is one gorgeous machine it's in competition with a Honda passport with your blows away interior engine beautiful car great riding car too sporty SUV or around 52,000 can't beat it
Once you go up in the CX-90 trims you have to get the captain's row configuration, so if you don't use the 3rd row you'll only be able to fit 4 people. And if you do use the 3rd row, you'll lose the cargo space. Also without the additional 3rd row, the CX-70 would be faster when comparing the same trims.
I was looking forward to the 70 but when I added all the options I wanted it was more expensive than a comparably equipped RX350. The second 70 that I drove had a sagging headliner and an unbalanced from wheel. Decided the cheaper RX Hybrid was the way to go!
Should of just been another trim level for the 90. Call it something like the CX-90 Sport Trim Package like how Audi has the Black Optic Package since it deletes a lot of the chrome. They should of definitely kept the 3rd row. Exactly as you mentioned, people buy a vehicle of that size for 2 things: to haul people and cargo. When youre not hauling people, fold the 3rd row down for the cargo, and when you have to haul people, fold up the 3rd row. Pretty simple.
Have had many Mazda vehicles and loved them all. This seems fantastic and I love that it was made in Japan (as were all of mine), but WHEW, you better hope anything going wrong, esp with the powertrain is under full warranty. From loosening the first bolt, to wiping down the wrenches was 25 mins to do a timing belt in my 323. Did my clutch laying on a driveway by myself, and aside from a lot of effort at least the procedure was simple and straight forward. Days like these are looooong gone. Heck, even the back spark plugs on this engine look like a nightmare from here, being so far under the firewall.
I prefer the sport design with black of the CX70 over the flagship design with chrome and bumper of the CX90. Still would have preferred the CX60 or a super CX-50 the same way a grand highlander is a super rav4. This much money, I want it to look how I want as well. I appreciate the content
Mazda needs to understand the premium and luxury space includes soft riding suspension and steering, as well as thicker glass for sound deadening even on base trims. They have some ways to go and should not be commanding the price they ask for this or the "CX90".
The suspension definitely is a weak point. I confirmed the rather unrefined ride with a test drive. If Mazda claims they are now a luxury car maker, then make that ride more refined and smoother. I told the dealer this after I took a 30 minute test ride of the CX-60 here in Finland. I was quite disappointed. The unrefined suspension makes me question purchasing the vehicle.

The CX5 is their bread and butter . If they just made it a tad bigger in the back and made a hybrid version they would have a home run . They definitely drop the ball on the CX70 I predict they will be selling them at deep discounts in the near future . It would also be great if Mazda made a truck in the US, I would be interested in that .
I wish Mazda would make a Mazda9 sedan (as a come back of the 929 and Millenia) using the new RWD architecture underpinnings and Inline 6 from the CX-70/90. If they did, I'd buy it.
One major difference: On higher trims the CX-90 seats six because the second row has captain chairs with no way to configure a bench seat. The CX-90 has a bench seat in every configuration so although the CX-70 has two rows, it seats five vs. six in the CX-90 with its third row.
Mazda should have just made the center console foldable in the captains chairs that simply converts to a bench or a console. Look at the MDX. It's a better back seat design and can be anything people desire. It's strange that they restrict utility in the name of making people choose between the models.
2nd row bench seat is available here in Canada on our GT trim level - 2-3-2 seat configuration where 3rd row bench is 2 full/adult sized seats (GS is base, GS-L, GT, GT-P, Signature in Canada)...Canadian website does not show it available as an option and I saw/sat in it at a dealer...maybe ask your local dealer if this is an available dealer order option in US.
16:21 this is exactly the car I'm looking for because it doesn't have 3rd row seats. I do not have a family so I do not need the third row seats but my fiance is really tall and needs to be able to fit and comfortably drive an SUV. Out of all the ones we've tried that don't have third row seating this one is the best and we have extra cargo space for our dogs plus we both prefer bench seats in the back which most third row SUVs don't have. Neither of us like the Captain's chairs for the back seats so we're actually going to buy the cx70.
Like it much better than the CX-90, the inline 6 that is. It’s also lighter than the CX-90, and the driving dynamics are better. I love the huge cargo space.
Everyone who was originally hoping for the CX-70 wanted the RoW 2-door 2-row CX-60 that was slightly larger than the CX-5/CX-50, not a rebadged CX-90 with a third row delete.
Excellent review by a technician/shop owner who knows a lot about cars so we can understand the mechanical pros & cons of a particular model.
This is a terrific looking SUV. Hats off to Mazda for staying in the game and now increasing in popularity.
Mazda's styling is really top notch across the board, imo. And SUVs are tough to style too.
How's the car now you still enjoy it? What mpg are you getting?
There is no more cubic feet of space in the 70. But you can imagine it.
Yeah this car is perfect for my family. We have one child and two dogs. We don’t need 3 rows, the extra storage and room for the pups is perfect.
I don’t quite understand why you don’t understand why someone would want a CX 90 with only two rows. This is exactly what we’d want! A large SUV with large cargo space instead of a third row. We’re empty nesters who like road trips. More cargo space is what we need.
Exactly! I love a big spacious trunk and don’t need or want a third row. F them kids
Me too. the two row SUVs are just too small if you want to stuff some fairly large boxes or items in the back.
I think his criticism was more around how they’re the “same” car with one less row but they’re the same price.
Have you decided anything yet? I also am interested in the Pilot for the v-6 naturally aspirated motor.
I like the fact that it only has two rows, most people don't need three, but yet still has plenty of room in the back.
it's almost like a CX-90 but without the 3rd row. i hope he mentions that throughout the video...
I think he may have once or twice a thousand times.

Might be most ideal for us unlike other families lol
It might have more room to negotiate on price too since most people will get the CX 90.
I prefer this with only two row, although, I may be in the minority.
@@Papolucho702 If I were you, I'd go for the CX-90 and just fold down the 3rd row. The resale value might be better as well because of the presence of that 3rd row. Mazda has some good finance and lease deals right now for the 90.
if you have lug around a lot of things, get a truck
AMD has a good point. If you wanted a 2-row SUV they could have made it smaller. Otherwise get a cx-90 and just fold down rear seat and bam you have the same amount of storage as cx-70 lol
Mobile massage? Nice. I’m sure it’s a legit massage. Wink wink.

It's worth pointing out that Mazdas are still assembled in Japan unlike most Toyotas, Nissans and Hondas.

Volume is volume. Folding down a third row seat doesn't make it disappear. You're using the space you could otherwise be using to haul stuff.
There's less than a sq foot of storage the the cubby underneath. Probably a couple pickle ball paddles and pickle balls. The value of a third row compared to empty space is way more. The CX-70 should be cheaper by a lot.
@@Rockytop8118 The total volume of the third row seat is less than a square foot? Sounds like you misplaced a decimal point in the metric conversion.
3rd row is not for everyone or for every situation but how often you use all that cargo room
I prefer a larger SUV with only two rows of seating. I may be in the minority.
The CX70 has no Chrome and front end is more aggressive looking.
I like the interior of both this and the cx90 honestly . Both seem like excellent vehicles.

@JBM425 I agree with you on the reliability, however Mazda has some ways to go to truly get the luxury cachet down. There is one very simple reason why Mazda saw fit to create a new model designation for the CX-90 without a third row: in the US auto market, there are almost no SUVs offered with 2 or 3 rows of seating. An automaker is more inclined to offer two different models than one model with both options.

Lol, same vehicle , except 2 rows vs 3 rows. I think the cx 60 would have been better
I drive a vehicle with a third row, and I've never had passengers in that row. I keep those seats flat, so that I can have more storage. I do think people might want a large, classy SUV that only has two rows of seats. However, what you said about the pricing comparison makes sense.

A real station wagon with real space, love it
So I have a Passport (2021), and it versus the Pilot is a very similar comparison with the Mazda.; The Passport at that time was a couple of grand more.
The Passport is a "chopped" Pilot, ie several inches shorter, no? That's not the case here.

Your not stupid it's a waste. Thankfully Mazda is starting to drop the tech. Otherwise they really are nice cars.
Yes they do save fuel and reduce emissions by shutting down.
We have 2nd row captain chairs. Recently rode with 5; used the 3rd row. Those passengers said it was comfortable.
Here in the Dallas market, CX-90s are being discounted $4000-5000. CX-70s are barely being discounted at all. Seems like more than enough reason for me to live with an unused 3rd row
makes sense they cost the same: you either need the 3rd row or you don't, it doesn't bring any value to you to have it if you don't need to use it.
But that's a government regulation issue. I'm assuming you would like that to change, but how can a RUclipsr change anything like that?
@Play4Vida a utuber cant change anything. But it does answer the question as to why mazda made the 70 instead of giving us the cx60 we all want.
There's a big demand for mid size 2 row suv with big power.
By re badging the 90 it sets up performance platforms for the future.
I'd love a two row large SUV. I have a Tahoe - the third row is useless to me, and takes up a bunch of cargo space. Yes it's odd to call this Mazda a different model, but i don't see what the drama is all about.
Thanks! Appreciate your efforts and sharing your knowledge!!
Wish I bought this before the 50
Id like one but with the straight 6 without a turbo in a lower trim model, i'm ok with 230-250hp in this vehicle, im not racing anyone and im not flooring it to the red light plainly in sight 100 yards from me like half the morons on the road.
Not a bad idea for a base model. But with ever stricter government regulations manufacturers are bring forced into lower displacement engines without turbos. So a base model with this would probably be their 2.5L turbo.
The engine start-stop feature is the main issue. Disabling this feature improves the transition from the electric motor to the gas engine.
But it's a multi-step process rather than pressing a single button, is that correct?
IT IS NOT ENGINE START STOP LIKE U THINKING. WHAT NARATOR SAYS IS HYBRID ENGINE START STOP MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
I love the choice of 2-row and 3-row. I'm not counting the price difference. I like the drivetrain design. Great review.
seriously considering this, can't wait to watch the review!
Please review the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV!!
I loved the Mazda CX 70 in person with the red interior - just was a little too expensive.
So how long will those clutches last? How much to change? Too much complexity. Love my 2015 cx5- a simple, tough gem.
As an empty-nester... the CX-70 makes MUCH more sense to us. We want all the cargo space, but not give up the 2nd row space that the CX-90 sacrifices incase we rarely need it.
I don't understand your review this is one gorgeous machine it's in competition with a Honda passport with your blows away interior engine beautiful car great riding car too sporty SUV or around 52,000 can't beat it
CX-90 does have a touch screen, it’s just disabled by default when in motion BUT that can be disabled so it’s touch sensitive all the time.
Can you please do a thorough review of 2025 Camry LE or XSE trims ?
Once you go up in the CX-90 trims you have to get the captain's row configuration, so if you don't use the 3rd row you'll only be able to fit 4 people. And if you do use the 3rd row, you'll lose the cargo space. Also without the additional 3rd row, the CX-70 would be faster when comparing the same trims.
I was looking forward to the 70 but when I added all the options I wanted it was more expensive than a comparably equipped RX350. The second 70 that I drove had a sagging headliner and an unbalanced from wheel. Decided the cheaper RX Hybrid was the way to go!
In addition to the 3rd row and colors, the front facia is also different between the CX-70 and CX-90.
Have you looked inside of a Lexus lately. This Mazda has way more luxury so I'd say Lexus needs to catch up
The suspension definitely is a weak point.

@@lsj6721Nope on the Lexus. Lexus interiors use to be a thing of beauty but over the last 5 years they just look like regular Toyota interiors with a few upgrades. The Mazda was designed from the ground up to be a premium vehicle will Lexus are basic Toyotas with add ons like lament front glass and some extra bells and whistles but it’s still basically a regular Toyota. But he does not do it to Toyota. Didn't he encourage people to buy the Tundra when he showed his, despite the massive recall that hasn't even given a solution to fix the engine grenade? This dude is a biased clown.
@@passZword he said in the beginning of that video that he is a mechanic and it isn’t a big deal to him if anything on the car breaks. He has access to parts. Reliability isn’t everything, contrary to what Toyota fanboys think
I think the reason for the copy and paste job is crash and environmental certifications - they can tell the EPA and NHTSA that “look, they’re exactly the same”
The CX5 is their bread and butter .
Millenia was a perfect size not a to big car perfect size
Great lesson, good productive thank you for the honest and free of hyperbole
One major difference:
On higher trims the CX-90 seats six because the second row has captain chairs with no way to configure a bench seat.
Exactly what I was hoping for. Something bigger than my CX-5, but smaller than the CX-90. The concept here is preposterous.
Sure, the rear doors open wide, but who can reach to close them, or even stop them from the inside on a windy day?
Excellent review by a technician/shop owner who knows a lot about cars so we can understand the mechanical pros & cons of a particular model. In this instance the Mazda engineers & accountants decided to work together to con the car buying consumer into thinking they were getting a brand new model in the Mazda lineup. Thanks for making us more informed about the CX-70.
