We bought our Atlas two years ago and love it. You see a lot of VW Atlases in the SC Upstate. Very practical 3-row SUV for families with the need for space and comfort.
When I bought the Atlas SEL AWD in June 2017, it was after exhaustive comparisons. I had to replace my Audi. I wanted the perfect family station wagon (not a race car) with AWD, lots of space, and ground clearance. We'd driven the Mazda CX-9 the summer of 2016 and liked it, but in 2017 when we were in the market to buy, we discovered the CX-9 had no air vents for the 3rd row and it was so much smaller inside compared to the Atlas. Highlander was better, but the spaciousness/luxury of the Atlas, 6 yr.72,000 warrantee, and Appleplay won us over. The Atlas was so much bigger inside than its rivals, and we did go for the SEL. I hated all lower models because only the SEL package has front adjustable passenger seat. There's no height adjustment in lower models for front passenger. Only downside to the VW that I hope they'll improve is larger gas tank (range on road trip was about 330-350miles) and fuel consumption. I did identify an error in the owner's manual on the SEL model that got them to rewrite it... no place to mount a front plate if you have the SEL radar... as owners manual said you can't block the region where it was supposed to be mounted. We didn't want to drill the front bumper cover, so my plate is hanging by zip ties down below. A tow hook would've been nice for an aftermarket plate holder but there's only one tow hook, and its in the back bumper. Besides that, the Atlas is awesome... We love it, and it IS bigger inside than the Audi Q7, and less annoying and worrisome with less gadgets and gizmos that can break or be broken. Q7 isn't a proper family car for little kids, because you're going to flip a bitch over the smallest thing (like kids playing in grandma's parlor) if someone touches something wrong or spills something. You drive a car IT WILL GET SCRATCHED or breathed on wrong. The Atlas SEL is pricey but is perfect for mixture of perfect functionality for the family and luxury. Plus it feels a little more exclusive being less of them are on the road. I bought my the first few weeks it was available and no one had one. AND when the crash tests came out later I discovered how much safer it is than the rivals including the Ford Explorer
Also another key feature we loved was the ability to access the third row seats without the need to remove car seats from the second row. The Atlas can hold 5 car seats... three across the 2nd row. (we only have two kids, but it was neat knowing that for when we haul cousins)
I agree with what you talked about, I have a 2019 Atlas SEL premium few months ago, that’s a very good family car in the market, very comfortable and huge room to accommodate anything, V6 engine is getting better after several months driving, it’s not the race car, but very down-to-earth car, good-looking car
Own a SE trim package of the 2018 and by far the smoothest ride. Love taking long distance trips with it. I do agree that the MPG should be better but that vr6 sounds amazing with smooth shifting!
I got SEL 5 months ago and still like it. Do not feel it's underpowered. Space and practicality are great. It has some glitches but nothing major. To be expected from first year product.

Whoever first makes an upper tier 7 seater suv that's ELECTRIC and gets 300 miles of range for around 40k starting will basically win at cars in America for years. Since for normal buyers their only reason for not getting massive cars like this is gas mileage
Ryukachoo Look to ford. They've announced they'll have a 300 mile range ev suv out in a few yrs. Although they weren't confirmed to be the same product, they recently teased what this crossover may be, the mach 1, basically the teaser showed a explorer, aka a 7 seater suv and a mustang basically going into a garage to make a hybrid love child. A hybrid sports ford suv? Sign me up lol.
Ryukachoo But we also don't know if this suv will be entirely electric or a hybrid, srry should have mentioned that. I believe ford said this suv with a 300 mile range will be all electric.
Love Volkswagen. Getting this because how roomy it is for my four year old twins, 2 year old daughter and newborn baby. Great for going out to dinner with friends!
For people saying that the Pilot is unreliable, The 9 speed was fixed in fall time with a recall and the 18 Pilot Elite and Touring won’t have the shifting problem. Most people buy the EX-L for the 6 speed. I have a CAD spec EXL RES, Amazing car, rides great and looks are sleek.
FYI, the levers on top of the second row seats are double hinged which means you can pull it towards you when you want to bring it back and you’re sitting in the third row. Very convenient.
Best SUV I've ever owned. Tons of leg room. My knee never touches the console ever. Such am easy truck to drive. Hyundai and Kia is garage compared to VW. Looks so much better and just has the fun factor that others lack.
Pentium III It has a 0 to 60 of 8s... That thing is slow for pre 2010 standards, That thing is slow even comparing it with a Honda FIT so when you see that the Honda Pilot is doing 6s you realize both cars are not even on the same galaxy of performance.
Sheth Jones not necessarily compared to anything, but moreso it seems to be par for the course for many companies as of late, with VW being one of the largest offenders. Probably ok for this class of vehicle, but they are doing it in Audis, too. Compare the interior of a Q5 to that of a Volvo XC60 for the same price....
@@alexhagen5105 I landed a really good deal on a used Pathfinder. But ultimately I am set on getting a Durango GT or R/T whichever I can find a better deal on
I have had 2018 SE Atlas for 2 years and I love this car. Although, I feel VW should have given this car more torque, I feel power is enough for a family vehicle. I have driven this car 3 times cross country from san francisco to new york over I-80 and it was always quite a comfortable drive. It is very stable on turnings and drives pretty smooth.
Im in a 2016 mdx what would subway if i was considering the cx9 you mentioned in regards to sportyness and luxury. Im just trying to save money on my next lease end of 2018 without compromosing comfort abd amenities.
The Atlas SEL Premium has the ability to also perpendicularly park itself, not just parallel park. But it will only get you out of a parallel parking spot in auto mode, it is not fully automatic though, when you are using the self parking for parallel and perpendicular, and for getting out of a parallel parking spot, you still have to work the gas, the break and the shifter. That car does the steering, you just have to follow the directions on the screen.
Great practicality. Wife and I went to check it with enthusiasm. Were really impressed with interior and practicality. Great feeling, upbeat impressions until I stepped on gas pedal. Cannot remember when I drove last time such underpowered car. Few days ago tried Dodge Durango R/t. I think I will get that, and I always owned European cars. I have VW Tiguan, and we need one more vehicle, a real 7 seater. We were convinced Atlas will be the one. But engine is so disappointing. Sorry VW, I guess you forgot your loyal customers.
Nice looking vehicle. I agree it will age well and be relevant style wise for 10years easy. Like the roof!! I am the guy still hoping Dodge Grand Caravan gets a huge refresh. Seriously though for a family it truly is difficult to get a vehicle that simply does all that the caravan does.... But perhaps this crossover pulls it off... great cargo area. Very needed for many trips to beach to water parks.. vacations... camping... the stuff real families do!!
Atlas is a great for map of the world as well as Volkswagen of the same time in a few years ago when they have to be honest with the same thing to get it right now but it's just a good time for the next one too
Yeah so then can have another scandal Volkswagen is done with diesel 2015 of September was the last time a diesel was found in a Volkswagen audi or Porsche vehicle
hi, what car would you recommend for a family that is comfy, good looking and lots of amenities? i have some in mind like Chevrolet traverse premier, Honda pilot ( not sure about 3rd row in this one) ,Nissan Pathfinder, Nissan armada, Volkswagen atlas. Great video!
Would've nice to have seen a more popular trim covered. SEL premium is around $50k vs the more likely candidate (SE - ~$34k). No mention of the class leading 6yr/72k mile bumper-to-bumper warranty? That's pretty impressive. The LED headlights are a nice touch for all trims on the atlas. That irked me about the new tiguan where you can only get the LED headlights with that top of the line model....
I own one. I disagree with you. It has plenty of power even when loaded with 7. The modern transmission makes the difference. It is not sluggish at all.
Great video! I like the look of it but will opt for turbo4 w 4motion if I ever change my rav4 awd. I think vw could've done smt better to that fake exhaust ports and road noise in cabin. May be adds awd full electric model next year and I'm not a big fan of leather down here in Texas.
any1 catch Sof say"Ponda Pilot'@ 23:15..LOL Good review, as always. I rented a 2018 SE w/15 miles on it from Avis. Abused it for a week, with long drives from Miami to Tampa for work conferences. The engine is pretty good, but as he stated, u have to really put your foot on it to pass and overtake cars at about 80 mph, with the AC on. It felt a bit top heavy for some reason, and it was practically new. The head unit display is exactly as he stated, easy to use and clear. Gas mileage wasn't that good either. I am fortunate to have a company gas card, so i started with 87, then tried the 93 octane. No big difference. Leatherette is not that bad, co workers who got in could not tell the difference. I had 2018 pathfinder previous week w/ 7 miles, and plastics still on the bumpers and wheel rims. BEST FUEL ECONOMY EVER, and i abused that as well. Just didn't like the CVT. Overall, I would take over the VW.
Highlander V6 has appropriate power unlike the Atlas. MORE 2nd row leg room, less than inch diff. In 2nd row hip room. MORE 3rd row hip room, just less leg. And most importantly Reliability! Who cares if it's priced competively when the cost of ownership ain't even close after 5 years!

Narrow can be better in some circumstances (or other countries).
Sang Eeth Yeah, I am a VW fanatic, but I have to agree with you. If you get the R-line appearance package the car comes with much better looking 20" wheels.
In July 2018, I purchased a VW flagship version of Teramont 530V6 (2.5T) in Shenzhen, China. While I driving to 4000 kilometers, a brake failure was found. At the same time, I found that the engine was seriously leaking oil. The whole vehicle suddenly stopped running two times so far, You have to restart before you can drive. The problem has not been completely solved by looking for manufacturers and distributors many times. This problem brings a lot of troubles to my life, and I lose my confidence in Volkswagen. This case can be used for your reference when you want to buy a SAIC Volkswagen.
This needs a diesel V6 motor or a TT V6. Imagine if you're carrying 5-7 people, driving on hilly roads and have the AC on in the summer this vehicle will be very sluggish.
@Pube83, they've extended their bumper to bumper warranty to a fully 6 years 72k miles, so that alone indicates they've improved the reliability or are just trying to build goodwill backup. German cars aren't known for their reliability, particularly of their electronics, but in general, the performance, safety, and technology (if you want it) that you get in them make up for the fault of reliability. At least in my mind. Their just well made vehicles and their safety particularly is the differentiating factor for me compared to some Japanese or American tin can piece of shit.
TheHvk Safety? Any newer car is much safer than a car from 10 years ago. If you want ultimate safety, you go Volvo. I would take a pre-owned tin can Lexus RX over this brand new VW any day of the week.
CX9 interior is way smaller than the ATLAS. ATLAS is insanely spacious. And you can move the back seats back and forth, including the 3rd row. Have you seen the storage compartment? You can fit a frecken gallon in there.
The interior looks so clean, classy, functional, elegant. Nothing crazy. Does it have ambient lighting though? Also, this seems like a better value-priced alternative & more spacious than the Lincoln Aviator. I know they don't exactly compare size-wise & price-wise but a well-equipped to fully-loaded Reserve or Black Label trim is very expensive for a lease 😂. This would more affordable for a lease
Chris Browder we looked at both. We looked at Durango’s. Traverse, Acadia and atlas. We narrowed down between atlas and Acadia. We ended up buying a Atlas Se with R line package 4 months ago and we love it!!! Tons of room on the inside and drives awesome!
Correction - This is not the largest vehicle Volkswagen has ever produced. The EuroVan series was available in the USA for years and was significantly larger than the Atlas.
I like the design and the space inside it's very useful for a large family but they need to make the fuel mileage more competitive and more horse power is needed, specially where I live where we have high elevation.
I bought an SEL R Line Atlas. Awesome car. I opened the sunroof shade for the first time and it came apart. It has been sitting in the shop for 2 months now. VW has promised me a new vehicle but it’s taking forever. Buyers please check your sunroof before purchasing.
Can you tell us if your test was conducted with 87 octane fuel or 91 plus? Just learned from brochure that published HP and torque figures are achieved with premium fuel. Could explain some of the sluggishness if it was tested with regular. Would be less shifty of VW if they said premium was recommended for max performance, with 87 octane specified as minimum required.
Nice car but I'm not sure if I like the Push Button Starter next to where I put my beverages. What if I spill my drink and it seeps into the Push Button Starter. Things can get rather sticky icky. If I accidentally put something on the button while driving will it screw up the transmission?
looks simple as hell, so not so surprised that it's designed and built solely for American market... I can't believe I am saying this, but I think Dodge/Jeep and Ford pulled better in terms of designs...
i guess this is purely subjective issue, but while Ford has been making great looking cars in recent years, they haven't aged that well as time passes. Only exception to these would be Focus and Mustang where both designs are evolutionary than revolutionary. I find rest of the Ford designs hang on the conservative side, but the problem is none of their designs age well. It almost feels like Ford wants the customers to continuously swap out their cars ever 5 years or so and forget about the previous models. It feels like Ford wants the flare and glory on its first model years and forget about it. It feels cheap and I can't see it lasting. On the other hand, I give Lincoln a nod and would like to see how their design language ages over time.
Ryan Williams My wife & I took one for a test drive a few days ago. I looked in the rear view mirror which made me turn around in my seat. Yes. It’s cavernous inside. I was stunned. Nice ride too.
Looks nice but way to heavy and not good on gas at all compared to it's competition. I'm also very weary of getting another VW. I had a 2012 Passat with the 3.6 and it started burning oil and the door locks stopped working. I looked and the door lock issue is a major issue with all VW models.
Have already seen 3 of these in my area recently, the truck still catches me off guard when I see it however. For a moment I think "has Jeep made a bloated Grand Cherokee?"

I had 2018 pathfinder previous week w/ 7 miles, and plastics still on the bumpers and wheel rims. BEST FUEL ECONOMY EVER, and i abused that as well. Just didn't like the CVT. Overall, I would take over the VW.
Great video Sofyan but no thanks to this. We don't all like giant boat vehicles in the US. I'll never understand the SUV obsession in this country.
Chris Allison I completely agree. It sucks we are missing out on some great cars because the average American likes big, cheap and bloated SUV’s. 👎
But "muh visibility"
How else are you to transport a crew of seven and not feel like you're delivering vegetables in a box truck?
For anybody carrying more than 4/5 people there is no other choice. My family has 6 people and unless we get an ugly minivan we have to have an suv
Some of drive our kids to soccer and baseball games. That’s not fitting in my GTI, unfortunately.
VW are always good for lining the door bins, but what a shame to not bother with the inside of the glovebox. My E39 benefits in both of these areas.
CX-9s are being offered with a $5K discount. And, I haven't heard good things about the build quality of the Atlas. I do like the size of the Atlas.
@@MoneyMaples yeah now...the highlander is much smaller...only the atlas and traverse are comparable
The wheels look like cheap plastic rim covers.
Sang Eeth Yeah, I am a VW fanatic, but I have to agree with you. If you get the R-line appearance package the car comes with much better looking 20" wheels.
That means the wheels are quality. No flashy chrome to scratch and fade
I agree!
Geeth San Well the 21" Two-Tone rims available on this trim for $700 make the whole car look much better
VW needs to add hybrid options, pair the v6 and/or turbo 2 with an electric motor and this thing would be legit.
Great Camera Work! 🎥
This needs a diesel V6 motor or a TT V6. Imagine if you're carrying 5-7 people, driving on hilly roads and have the AC on in the summer this vehicle will be very sluggish.
Dashcam Dumbasses They have access to the 3.0 diesel in the Q7 which would be perfect for it
But then no one would buy the Audi. Underpowering this SUV is intentional.
Well, you are right but they could trim down the diesel to avoid a internal competition with Audi
I've never had hills and AC be a problem for any engine except 4-cylinders.
We got it, it's pretty powerful compared to the trash minivans it competes with
If I had to buy an SUV and didn't want a luxury brand... I'd get this.
TheHvk
Good luck with reselling it out of warranty...
TheHvk
Safety? Any newer car is much safer than a car from 10 years ago. If you want ultimate safety, you go Volvo. I would take a pre-owned tin can Lexus RX over this brand new VW any day of the week.
Pube83
Why are ya such a VW hater?
Wish the third row got heated seats.. but even with 3 rows lot of cargo space
CX9 interior is way smaller than the ATLAS. ATLAS is insanely spacious. And you can move the back seats back and forth, including the 3rd row. Have you seen the storage compartment? You can fit a frecken gallon in there.
thanks for the review!
Seems like a great car to lease
We are trying to decide between an Atlas and a Dodge Durango (with a V6). Based on your opinion, which one would you recommend?
Chris Browder we looked at both. We looked at Durango’s. Traverse, Acadia and atlas. We narrowed down between atlas and Acadia. We ended up buying a Atlas Se with R line package 4 months ago and we love it!!! Tons of room on the inside and drives awesome!
even though there is no market for it, how glorious would it be if VW decided to make 5% of these with a manual trans?
I miss manuals period.
Driving one now
Love that you can get a vr6 version
Is that "Big Smoke" from GTA as your pic? Win!
107uptown yes he is my religion
this car has a new welcome chime.
Martin Molina There’s your problem with an American built car.
Faux stitching in faux leather, some faux wood-trim and some faux exhaust tips too boot. Makes for a real Fauxwagon :P
If you want a luxury car get a Audi. If they put real leather wood ect, why would Audi exist?
Fauxfegnugen... but I just bought one because it is about utility, not luxury.
For luxury and economy I have the Bimmer wagon.
How much easier can access to the Pilots third row be? You flipped a switch on the Atlas second row and the seat tilted and slipped forward.
The light color interior makes even the basic German design seem upscale.
Not my type of vehicle but for what it is I think it looks good.
That is a nice car, Im really enjoying the new Volkswagen shapes, the design department deserve a pat on the back!
Fake exhaust is lame
masterwhopper414 it's not an electric vehicle, how can it have fake exhaust ?
D Jay T fake exhaust tips. They’re most likely hidden under the car and has the exhaust tips for looks
, they're not fake what's the echo hitch video
Quasi-Dual Stainless Steel Exhaust is the system used with the 6cyl 4motion
Is the infotainment power button broken? It looks twisted and/or out of place...
I think I want this to be my family's next family SUV as an upgrade for my mom from her Land Rover LR3!
Very annoying when someone talk without pauses between phrases. Just flooded my ears.
I'm just here to see how many times the word "tester" is said lol
Nice car but I'm not sure if I like the Push Button Starter next to where I put my beverages.
What if I spill my drink and it seeps into the Push Button Starter. Things can get rather sticky icky.
If I accidentally put something on the button while driving will it screw up the transmission?
I'll gladly take the smaller, better driving and more luxurious CX9
Tech Defender Ok if you don’t have a family I guess.
Yeah that will rust😂
better driving? and you've driven both?
Tech Defender the mazda is 199 inches the vw is 198 inches
Luke lmao it was just a joke but the VW is way bigger and has a naturally aspirated engine
I swear that gear shifter is as old as Morgan Freeman.....
Donovan well, seeing as how black don’t crack ....
The key fob also
No one cares
Aaaaand it works perfectly. I hate these new shifters...
same shifter they use on everything
15:13 I absolutely despise the exhaust on this car, cant believe car manufacturers actually do this.
It looks like a Grand Cherokee from the side.
The king of Check Engine Lights. That check engine light will be on a lot after the warranty expire.
In the near future I want to see a comparison with the atlas and the new three row Subaru
Does it come in 4x4 for off-roading ?
looks simple as hell, so not so surprised that it's designed and built solely for American market...
I can't believe I am saying this, but I think Dodge/Jeep and Ford pulled better in terms of designs...
preventor333 it is built and sold in China as well
preventor333 What do you mean you can't believe you're saying this? Ford has some of the best designs in the industry.
i guess this is purely subjective issue, but while Ford has been making great looking cars in recent years, they haven't aged that well as time passes.
Reminds me of the Dodge Nitro, and that car was garbage.
preventor333 You mean lasting in terms of the design seeming fresh? Conservative designs tend to age better than outlandish ones.
Was your tester the top of the line model?
Great Review!!!
I didn't think the atlas was that big, but I rolled up next to it in my R51 (pathfinder) which isn't huge, but I was surprised. It's a big ole bit@h!
Ryan Williams My wife & I took one for a test drive a few days ago. I looked in the rear view mirror which made me turn around in my seat. Yes. It’s cavernous inside. I was stunned. Nice ride too.
Wow they win!!!!
