Fun fact: knockers are a real thing from Cornish mythology. They aren't the weird parasite things depicted in the show, they're more like goblins or imps, but they are a thing from a real culture. Having read the manga, I know that's not what the author was going for, but still, it's an interesting coincidence.

Hey Shadow! I wanted to stop by and say thanks. My anime adventures over 10 years ago started with some of your videos. Some of my first anime were Yumekui Merry, Haruhi Suzumiya, and Kanon all because of stumbling across your channel and it's so awesome to hear your voice again and see you were still recently posting. To your eternity is a favourite of mine and it's oddly nostalgic to see you did a review on it. Thanks for all the years of work! I wouldn't start my adventure any other way

A newer anime I think you’d enjoy is The Case Study of Vanitas. Set in an alternate universe version of 1889 Paris , the series is a mix of Action, romance, comedy, drama and horror. The show is about Vanitas, a human with a magic book whose a self styled “ Vampire Doctor “ and Noe, a superhumanly strong Vampire. Together they work to protect Vampire kind from a curse spreading like wildfire. The reason I think YOU in particular will enjoy this is because there is a lot of romance , actually good romance. The most focused on pairing is basically a healthier version of Spike and Buffy Summers, the other two revive less focus but they are excellent. This series focuses on how people think with their EMOTIONS on important decisions and make assumptions that we assume are absolutely true when the other person feels differently.( a major factor in the second half.) something I find intriguing about the show is that like Code Geass and FMA all of the recurring characters are interesting and multi layered.( sometimes they are really annoying , but they are three dimensional.) Speaking of your favorite anime, The creator of Vanitas , JUN MOCHIZUKI, cites Fullmetal Alchemist as her greatest inspiration and that’s most obvious in this work. I honestly think that this anime and manga could be the NEXT Fullmetal Alchemist. But don’t get me wrong, it’s not flawless, while the music is spectacular, they sometimes pick weird songs for the situation. And while the pacing is good and the author bends over backwards to make things work like an intricate puzzle, there are some decisions that make you wonder what the hell everyone is doing.( most noticeable when you really think about how Vanitas and Noe meet and how some of the characters are just so focused on honesty they make Eddard Stark look full of guile.) And no good series can make it without villains and so far this series has FOUR big bad’s! And they are ALL terrifying in different ways. But debatably the most impactful is a young man named Astolfo, he’s a minor antagonist but he has one of the three most traumatic backstory in the series full of traumatic backstories and his final appearance so far just stabs you in the heart.

Much of the plot and characters is also pretty dumb. Gugu's Fire breath is hilarious, He and March just forget their core Motivation at the exact moment they don't serve any emotional purpose anymore (Getting wealthy and growing up as an adult) and the main antagonist represent nothing at all other than a threat to the main character and are a very transparent plot device to bring tension where the author didn't deem themselves capable to introduce it in a fitting and natural way.

Though i didn't think Gugu lived to become older. Also i thought Tonari would die, so the show wasn't as formulaic later on. Only March and Gugu was predictable.

Gugu's dream wasn't getting wealthy, it was his brothers. Gugu only wanted that to make his brother happy. When Gugu applied for jobs it ws just in order to get food on the table. His motivation was to have a family, which he protected till the end.
March wanted to be a mother. The entire time she was with Fushi, she acted like a parent to him. Idk what more you'd want from her?
"the main antagonist represent nothing at all other than a threat to the main character"
There's 2 antagonists. The knockers and Hayase. We don't have much information on the knockers yet, it's only season 1. Can't expect the author to give us all the answers right at the beginning. Hayase is also still alive and will likely remain a villain throughout the story.
"plot device to bring tension where the author didn't deem themselves capable to introduce it in a fitting and natural way."

If you read this: Don't watch this anime.
It is pretty stupid and overall pointless.
Characters don't exist to have their own story and purpose, they are meant to die so you can cry about them after you got attached to them and their, at that moment completely irrelevant, motivation. (Gugu forgets to become wealthy very quickly and March never cared to become an adult once it wasn't opposed by her role as a sacrifice anymore)
6:05 Fushi doesn't reflect humanity, the show never confirms that. It only begins to replicate specifically human behavior and do the Pinocchio because the writers didn't have a more creative story to explore with a being created to absorb all information it can. Why doesn't Fushi become a tree or a wild animal? Why does EVERY story involve humans when it itself has no species? No, it has to reflect humanity, because that is what the Plot has to revolve around.
The Knockers are completely irrelevant to any narrative the show might have ever have wanted to build. They only exist because you can't fear for an immortal character unless there exists a baked in mechanic to harm it. Here, it loses memories of his friends and the ability to transform into them. There is no other reason for the Knockers to be part of that story.
If you want a great show with similar themes and structure that actually has a point and isn't out to get your crying for no good reason, watch Violet Evergarden.

    • @lampad4549
      @lampad4549 2 года назад

I will respond to all your points eventually. But on the first point you are objectively wrong about the characters not having their own story. Each arc is centered around those characters and those arcs are their story just because they don't get involved in future arcs of the story doesn't mean they are pointless that's ridiculous. Look at stories like cowboy bebop, mushishi that has that similar element in its structure. Where you have an overarching story but sub stories in that.
It only replicates humans cause they are the most dominant and interesting species that have all these conflicting emotions tied into them. A tree cannot do that nor can any other wild animal. Fushi is too conscience to be just a wild animal, that type of story would be unbelievable. And sure there could have been more creative ways to go about it but that is lowest hanging fruit you can have when criticizing a story.
As for the knockers yeah their main purpose is to be antagonistic to fushi but so what, that's what it means to be an antagonist, would you say the same thing about the ring of sauron?

    • @hexcodeff6624
      @hexcodeff6624 2 года назад

@@lampad4549 "Each arc is centered around those characters and those arcs are their story just because they don't get involved in future arcs of the story doesn't mean they are pointless that's ridiculous"
Every character ever has their own story in some way. My point is that the story of these characters is completely irrelevant to the author and get thrown out the window once they aren't needed to make you emotional anymore.
March wants to be an adult, until the conflict of her as a sacrifice is resolved, then that motivation of hers is contradicted and forgotten about. Contradicted because at one point, she needs a reminder that her role model for adulthood, her parents, even exist, which would happen to no child ever, especially not this one whose whole personality is so invested in her parents.
Gugu wants to be rich, but that gets never mentioned again after his brother betrays this shared dream of theirs. Later on he gets a golden ring and doesn't think about achieving his goals with it even once.
Those stories don't exist to have a message, explore the character or deepen the narrative. They exist so you can begin to get emotionally attached to the character, because what happens to them is just unfair, made more so because of that one-off motivation of theirs, so that once they die, you feel more of it.
And every character dies. Because it is hard-baked into the structure of the story. Fushi CANNOT its powers if it doesn't have a friend that dies at the end of the arc, which makes it all the more transparent that these stories are only put together to make you cry or feel emotional
"It only replicates humans cause they are the most dominant and interesting species that have all these conflicting emotions tied into them" That doesn't follow the rules the story laid out, which the story itself doesn't as well.
Fushi exists to collect information. If it was to collect as much information as possible, it wouldn't stick with humans becaus the biologic information would be very repetitive. A being like that would definitely be a tree or another plant for some time at least.
You can only create these post-hoc justifications for the story because the writers really didn't care about the concept and only used it as a springboard for the classic "Learning Empathy" story.
The Knockers aren't just antagonistic, their only purpose in the world is to be a threat to Fushi by taking his transformations and memories away, that's it. It's a very clear way of the author telling us: I have no idea how to build long lasting tension with an immortal character, so here you have a random predatory creature whose ability of taking transformations away would have no applications whatsoever if the main character didn't exist.
Like so many over things in this story, the cheap purpose is extremely transparent.

@@hexcodeff6624 "Characters don't exist to have their own story and purpose, they are meant to die so you can cry about them after you got attached to them"
Like Iraish said. Each new character introduced has an arc centered around them. Just becouse some of them die, it doesn't mean they didn't have an arc or a purpose within the story. The people Fushi turns into are present long after they've died, showing their impact will always be relevant throughout the story. If you need an example, just watch the episode where Fushi loses his memories of March. And how it affects him.
"Gugu forgets to become wealthy very quickly"
Idk why this is even relevant. It was mainly Gugu's brother who wanted to get rich. After he betrayed Gugu, that was no longer something Gugu wanted. Think the show made that pretty clear. Idk how you could watch a whole episode of Gugu and think this was what he was about. Gugu just wanted a family and to be together with Rean.
"March never cared to become an adult once it wasn't opposed by her role as a sacrifice anymore"
When does she ever say that she doesn't want to become an adult? Now you're just making up random things that never occurred. March took care of Fushi the entire time, acting as if she was his mother. That was kind of the point of her and Fushi's relationship. You just choose to ignore all that or what? Did you hit your head before writing these comments? I'm genuinely concerned for your inability to put basic things together.
"Fushi doesn't reflect humanity, the show never confirms that"
He reflects someone who's learning to become human and the different emotions that it entails. Learning and growing from his experiences.
"the writers didn't have a more creative story to explore with a being created to absorb all information it can."
How's it not creative? How'd you do it?
"Why doesn't Fushi become a tree or a wild animal?"
He becomes several animals. I'm really starting to doubt you even watched this show. How'd you miss something like this? Also why'd he need to be a tree? He might as well just turn into a rock then. What good would that do?
"Why does EVERY story involve humans when it itself has no species?"
Couse humans are the most intelligent. He needs to get smart in order to learn.
"No, it has to reflect humanity, because that is what the Plot has to revolve around."
      And the problem is?
"The Knockers are completely irrelevant to any narrative the show might have ever have wanted to build"
No, they played a big role in the story. They were very relevant to the plot and the characters.
"They only exist because you can't fear for an immortal character unless there exists a baked in mechanic to harm it."
There you go, that's the point. Fushi was also created in order to defeat them as well.
"it loses memories of his friends and the ability to transform into them. There is no other reason for the Knockers to be part of that story."
Yeah it takes Fushi's memories and abilities. While trying to kill him and others. You don't know the purpose of the knockers, it's not been revealed yet. It has already been confirmed there's gonna be a season 2 and the manga is still ongoing. Do you expect to get all the revelations within the first season? What story does that? Seems like a silly thing to complain about. What'd be left for the rest of the seasons, if you give all the answers in the beginning? If the series was finished, you'd have a point.
"My point is that the story of these characters is completely irrelevant to the author and get thrown out the window once they aren't needed to make you emotional anymore."
So we just ignore all the times they were mentioned in the story or how Fushi is able to transform into them? There's so many call backs to previous characters within the story. They're never just written out and never mentioned again. Again, you're making a case where there is none.
"she needs a reminder that her role model for adulthood, her parents, even exist, which would happen to no child ever"
Yes it would. Do you think about your parents 24/7? She only briefly forgot about them becouse she was having fun for a brief moment. Pretty normal. March was also taking care of Fushi the entire time. When did she forget wanting to be an adult?
      "Gugu wants to be rich"
Once again, no he doesn't. Once his brother betrayed him, he only wanted money in order to survive. Couse you need money in order to eat. Gugu wanted a family.
"that gets never mentioned again after his brother betrays this shared dream of theirs."
Right, there you have it. Becouse it was his brother who wanted that. Gugu was in on it becouse it was his big brother. He wanted his brother/family to be happy.
"Later on he gets a golden ring and doesn't think about achieving his goals with it even once."
Yeah it's not his goal. It spells it out to you right here. Are you sure you weren't dropped as a child?
"Those stories don't exist to have a message, explore the character or deepen the narrative"
That's exctly what they do. The message is to cherish those around you and how to deal with grief. Which we see explored through Fushi.
      "And every character dies."
Wrong again. Rean, the old man, Tonari and Hayase didn't die. The Tonari arc showed that Fushi was able to prevent people from dying, becouse of his past experiences. Also there's gonna be future seasons. Pretty safe to assume a bigger cast of characters, now that Fushi is fully grown. Though we'll just have to wait and see, it's only been 1 season. Too soon to say "everybody dies". There's many we haven't met yet.
      "Fushi exists to collect information."
In order to defeat his enemies and prevent a catastrophe. He learns from other people. One of the main messages is to learn from others.
"If it was to collect as much information as possible, it wouldn't stick with humans becaus the biologic information would be very repetitive."
Already said this but i'll repeat. He needs intelligence in order to defeat his enemies. The way he learns to deal with them, is by using his head and what he has learned from others. Why'd he need to turn into a tree? That makes no sense.
"the writers really didn't care about the concept"
      What concept specifically?
"only used it as a springboard for the classic "Learning Empathy" story."
True, that's what the story is about. If you don't like that kind of story don't watch it. It'd be the same if i watched a story about karate, then complain that there's karate in it. That'd be stupid. Just watch something else if that isn't your thing.
"The Knockers aren't just antagonistic, their only purpose in the world is to be a threat to Fushi by taking his transformations and memories away, that's it."
That has never been stated. Again, how many times do i have to say that this is just season 1? It hasn't been revealed to us yet, what they are or what their purpose is. None of us know yet.
"I have no idea how to build long lasting tension with an immortal character, so here you have a random predatory creature"
Considering how many characters has been killed, there's definitely tension in it. They make it so that he isn't immortal. It was also shown being fused with Hayase at the end, leading up to more of her in the future.
