im glad i grew up as a kid in the golden era of golf. kept me out of the streets and out of trouble. phil is one of the greatest to ever do it. arguably the best short game in golf
@@wrzs1525 actually that explanation is incorrect, the magnus effect would make the ball want to go the opposite way, he is hitting the ball at such an angle of attack that the ball has more momentum going to the green, not the spin
His 2019 PGA win...Phil is one of those people who looked nerds in a way in tjeis 20s, 30s but now he has that charisma, confidence even when he walks..top G
To me, Tiger and Phil were right on par with each other (talent), the only difference being that Tiger wanted to win more and Phil was out to have more fun with he game. Not that Phil wasn't incredibly motivated to win but you look at his face and he just loved getting himself out of a jam.. Almost like Phil is always a little kid at heart.
Phil wanted the wins just as much as Tiger. Tiger attacked a course with a relative anger. He was intense and showed a lot of emotion on the course. Phil was always more even keeled and yes, that was also directed toward having a bit of fun with a fan etc. however Phil also, as you said, loved the challenge of tough shots and hard to make recoveries. Phil had a mind for creativity and because he played the game on his own because he loved it his whole life (his parents didn't stick the club in his hands and push him like Tiger's dad did to him; Luckily Tiger wanted it anyway too) he did play that game like a kid. Tiger was attacking while Phil was trying to compose masterpieces. Two totally different but HUGELY efficient and successful ways to win golf tournaments. For that both rose to the top. There is no "One correct way" to swing a club or play a course. There is only YOUR correct way. Both of these guys found their correct way.
A drive that carries 300 yards is a good feeling. A flop shot done right is way more rewarding to me... I'm lucky to have pulled both off before, I'd take the feeling of pulling off the flop shot any day... I literally based my whole short game off watching Phil's instruction video. his whole irons-wedges technique actually works for me better than most so I stick with it. I just wish I had his touch, I'm too heavy handed. I can flop the ball but it usually runs on past the hole way too far...
Hes gotta be the best. The absolute god among men. He is the GOAT and no one can top ol' Philly boy. There is no one even close. Simply the best gentlemen and gentlemen.
he is the greatest and I cannot understand the animosity because he joined LIV.He is a professional golfer, he plays for money and he has the right to play for whom pays him better
Instead of only interlocking your left pointer and right pinky, interlock 2 or even 3 fingers on each hand. It forces your arms and wrists to stay together/be fluent and also makes you not forget to slide your club under the ball. It helps tremendously. Try it. With a little practice these shots are not very hard. Besides the hitting it backwards looks like it requires some skill. But also just need confidence to swing the club much faster than you normally would on such a short shot. I’m not Phil and once in a while I’ll blade it but I’m confident enough to try it most anytime now.
Absolute wizardry with the wedge. Best of all time. I'm a firm believer that had Phil not had the misfortune of being in his prime the same time as Tiger, he would have at least a handful more major wins.
The first shot in the series was at the Deutsche Bank at TPC Boston snot 6 years ago. I was lucky enough to be there standing right behind him. It was amazing how hard he went after that ball.
Wdym why? No other way to hit that shot. The green sloped hard to his left so there was no way he was going to be able to bump and run it from the angle he had. Only shot was a high flop that took the break out of play.
I would wager he pulls it off less than 50%. Don't forget, he doesn't care if he messes up and he practiced this in his backyard for years and years as a kid. His dad built him a chipping extravaganza! He is also right hand dominant, so that gives him a consistency advantage with the clubface. Practice, practice practice
Exactly one year after this video uploaded. Phil is in the lead by a stroke at the PGA championship heading into Sunday, could possibly be the oldest major winner of all time..... just leaving this here ( pls win tomorrow lefty )
3:06 I don't even think I could swing that hard, and Phil does that from an awkward stance in what looked like some pretty lush, thick, grass, and manages to be precise in his location where he lands it. I don't think he could have missed that by a hair and been anywhere close. I think one hair off perfection and that ball is nowhere close.
If he is even the tiniest bit thick or thin on any of those shots the shots he would either not move the ball more than a few feet (under the ball) or hit the ball 60 + yards over the green.
the reverse shots are going to never leave him forgotten
i think any time you talk about the greatest wedge players ever, the conversation starts and ends with Phil. he'll live on.
@@kingnastyyyyyy came here cuz of conversation about backwards flops
The last one, and especially the last replay, is incredible.
indeed - h´s a true MASTER

Ya that one was just bombs away..... truly incredible
Phil’s version of heaven is a giant field of rough with a green in the distance 😇
He really has one of the greatest fundamental skill sets the game has seen. Simply incredible.
The reverse over the head shot gets me every time, it’s unreal!
When you have a three minute “best flop shot” compilation you know you’re a badass.
Never get tired of watching phil....great golfer and a nice human being.

Phil is a legend.
Just sensational the confidence let alone the skill to play them shots wow I'm speechless. Superb player
Phil doing Phil things. Best wedge game ever, bar none.

No, flipping the ball with the hands gives it a backward spin, which makes the ball go backward in the air

Only phil can do some of those shots.. may the golf gods give you a US open..
how about a pga championship
KPMG, Barclays and Callaway have got incredible value from their sponsorship. Great how they all (& Phil in return) have stuck together.

Phil's on-line chipping lesson saved me 3-4 strokes a round.

Look at the last shot. the ball seems to go to the moon but then lands on the green very softly. What a shot.

He is my inspiration for my short game! I'm not good at the flop shot but I'm pretty good at the low spinning pitch shot with the drop and stop action

Brett troutman is the master of flop shots at 34 years old just like phil mickelson
What about the shot at #15 at Augusta from behind the green?
Say what you want about Phil, dude is a wedge magician.
Phil Mickelson: this looks like a tough shot
Also Phil Mickelson:

The backwards shot belongs to Phil. Nobody else..
How did Spieth not know Phil was going to be hitting onto the green. I would assume they were matched up in a group.
Where's the shot over the house in 2002???
Can anyone tell me what tournament the first shot was? It's one of my earliest memories of watching Phil.

Need to change the title. Half of these were not flop shots but still nice to watch.
Phil Mickelson, the king of the flop shot.
EDIT: I think that last shot would've cleared a house.
He has cleared a house with a flop shot. In a tourney too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he sinks the putt after coming off the roof shot!

Missing the best one at Scottish Open
Ball sitting under a seat in the grandstand with a bunker and 70 yard carry.
Phil: Give me a wedge, this could go in...
Those shots are like the jordan of bball. I mean really, we talking about milimeters as to were he strikes the ball.
I do them all the time, but all of mine are flops!
First shot wasn't a flop shot, it was a open face, yet delofted spinner punch because he had a clean lie to the ball
Was the first one really considered a flop?
I would never have the guts to take a full swing for fear I would hit the ball and it would go 75 yards into the rough!
funny thing is what happens leading up to these... an absolutely terrible shot and the very next shot is one for the history books lol
How many of those putts were made? 🤔
Phil was known for being a good putter, so probably most.
