This scene always gave me goosebumps. Hearing this play while the lone marine stands in the trench waiting for death was really powerful. The UED is probably my favorite Terran faction because they're sophisticated and technically the rightful owners of the Koprulu sector. I'm sad that they didn't have a more prominent role in the series. The most you see them is in Brood War, and then after that they made small appearances in Starcraft 2. It makes me wonder, what's going on on Earth while the war in the Koprulu sector is raging? In the book's prologue it states there was rioting and warfare due to overpopulation. I wonder how Earth reacted to the UED's defeat. I think Blizzard should make a DLC that explores what happened on Earth pre and post brood war.

I feel like having a branching narrative with Kerrigan embracing her zergness or humanity would have been great. It could have added an extra level of difficulty to an otherwise easy game by playing a human Kerrigan. The payoff would be a more empathetic narrative, but really, I just wanted a Queen of Blades who physically embodied schadenfreude and would derive whatever pleasure she could from causing pain. That would have redeemed the storyline, in my eyes.
@Ignat Kozlov Try "M.A.D. Menu theme" (the almost lost strategy 3D game) "Les troyens"by Hector Berlioz, namely "Vallon Sonore" Soldier Chorus from the Opera Dekabristi Empire Earth 2 intro music
This truly speaks volumes. To the kid who enjoyed the blood bath and the carnage. To the adult who saw sacrifice and hard choices life brings. This will always be in my heart as one of the greatest! For my comrades..... An friends who died... We move forward.
holy shit I never figured out the second part is in french, I just saw it in the comments here... btw, I know a lot of people don't like SC2 story cause it's not as good as BW, but man, SC2 story is good in it's own way.
Not just the music but the trailer/intro is amazing. I just saw the Stormgate trailer and it was so lacking, so very formulaic and reminiscent of modern AAA trailers. Unlike Stormgate, StarCraft's cinematics didn't rely on constant action, explosions, martial arts, forced badass moments like some mech suit coming down to turn around at the single soldier and go "I got this!" rather than paying attention to the attacking demon, it all feels so forced and stupid. This does just enough to show the horrors of war, no one is doing martial stunts, people are just shooting for their lives. Then the conversation on the ship and the music seemingly coming from speakers inside the ship turning into something grim as the camera cuts back to the planet and the trenches while the marine just looks up as they're left for dead and getting overrun by Zerg, without actually showing what happens to them, leaving it up to imagination. Very, very powerful, I wish the industry could go back to these kind of trailers, but I suppose they have no faith in the attention span of their viewers.
@Agent1W The problem that Wings of Liberty has is the same problem as a lot of sequels to old things have. Whether it be the new Indiana Jones film, the Phantom Menace, or the Wings of Liberty, etc. They all suffer from the same condition; The creators decided that it was a good idea to acknowledge the fact that the there was time between the last game and the new game by atmospherically breaking the fourth-wall. I want a game that continues like it was a day later -- I wanted Starcraft.
of course things were always better then than now, the attitude towards doing things like planning a whole game was so much more than just a mercenary notion, look at mainstream media now, its a crazy world out there
@DarkAntem wow i never knew that , thats freakin awesome and ironic at the same time. Took me 12 years to pick that up and god i was like 4 when SC came out.
@Cocarat206 Thanks man. As a writer, I get severely aggravated when I see other writers make these blatant flaws -- especially when it's about something I love, like Starcraft.
"Admiral, the Colonal's base will be overrun in a matter of minutes. Shall we intervene? "Take us into orbit Mr. Mounsteel. We've seen enough." The sound of Alexejs lighter, the leaving of the Battlecruiser Norad III, and the lost space marine with his empty Gaus Rifle. Damn, there's not much games with that feeling. Ah, I'm gonna watch it right now!
This remind of old war stories grandfathers would tell their grandchildren, around a fireplace in the study, a bear rug, trophies both of animal and war on the ceiling, a stormy/rainy night, the boy gleefully listening, sitting on his grandfather's lap:"We were there, I was in the Cavalry, His royal majesty's 5th Dragoon regiment" as a tear comes to his eye:"I lost many friends that day, but we did our duty, against the Zulu" he breaks down some, he misses his youth, he wishes for one last charge for old times sake, but, cannot, the war is over, his youth spent, his bones ache.
A good example of this would be the overall moral ambiguity of just about every faction in the game. There were few "completely evil" factions. The Dominion was Mengsk's grab for power but it also really DID act as a force to ensure human survival. The UED was another such "grey" faction. Raynor's Raiders were "good" overall but had to make unholy alliances with their sworn enemies at points in the game. And who could forget the tragedies of Aldaris and Stukov?
Soryy i should have included that i bought mine in S'pore in Sing dollars during the release date. The collector's edition looks cool...kinda like the diablo marine
@emilysmellylikeshit While that's a fair deduction, you must understand that they made SC2 feel like it was for kids. In the originals, there was cold-blooded slaughter, suicide, war tactics, mature dialogue, and masterstroke campaigns (The UED story-line, being my all-time favorite.) Arcturus was supposed to barely build his power again after of Brood War. Confederacy should have came back, not the Dominion. Arcturus should have been some universal tyrant that sapped the Confederacy's plans.
@bender5836 I'll be honest. Besides before the invasion of char, it felt much less dark than SC and Brood war. A couple of gruesome scenes don't change that.Hopefull HotS will bring that dark theme to shine again. Of course that's my opinion anyways but most would agree on that.
And then there was Kerrigan. Her portrayal in Wings of Liberty was an atrocity onto the franchise. She was a believable, down-to-Earth character who looked out for her own interests but did so with great subtlety and finesse. She played sides for fools left and right, and won half the time not by brute force but by cunning. She was the character you loved to hate, the manipulative, Dr. House-like Queen Bitch of the Universe. In WoL, she was a simple megalomaniac. Mengsk suffered a similar fate.
I disagree with Nemesis on just what made Starcraft good. Yes, it was the dark and depressing without trying to beat you over the head with it. In other words, it was down to Earth. But the political struggle was just one part of what really made SC1 a masterpiece: It catered to the intellectual. Many important scenes weren't embellished with flashy music and fancy special effects, just dialogue and the occasional piece of post-campaign text, and a few ingame scripted sequences.
Wholeheartedly agree. SC1 and Broodwar were all grim and dark - the Terran briefing background showed worn, rusted terminals, the Marines themselves knew how fucked they all were... Flash forwards to SC2 and everything is slick and shiny. Screw that.
that pretty much sums it up for me. Starcraft 2 was too structured and businesslike, with each level playing out as a tutorial for each new unit introduced.

@MetaIhead89 cause they are cultured, and all cultured ppl end up being drawn to opera music. the music it self is brilliant and has been a form of telling a dramatic story for a looongggg time. thats my take on it. take it or leave it
@Nemesis0300 At least speaking for the Wings of Liberty story, I wanted to get past that dark and depressing feel. It's depressing well enough to see Kerrigan victorious, as well as beholding the crushed Terran forces. But with Jim Raynor, I could learn to have hope again. "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning," from Psalm 30:5 comes to mind.
TRANSLATION: Those about to die salute you the living wish you well Those about to die salute you have courage servant of god have hope hope to live, hope pray very faithful soldier for victory today by singing. Don't be afraid Of suffering The future Awaits us The soldiers will return! They will arrive victoriously! Give everything for honor!
In WoL Raynor was turned to the medieval knight and not the little pirck escaping from great powers and held as a protege of the Protoss. In Utter Darkness is not depicted as dark future as prophecized by Duran. It's not enough ominous! An yes, Mengsk was turned from a Saddam Hussein like dictator into something like Baby Doc. Kerrigan, in my opinion, was turned into a New Overmind in WoL (I haven't played HotS yet) so there was little room for cunning alliances :/

The payoff would be a more empathetic narrative, but really, I just wanted a Queen of Blades who physically embodied schadenfreude and would derive whatever pleasure she could from causing pain. That would have redeemed the storyline, in my eyes.
Beautiful piece, excellent recording!
1:25 ?Admiral! The colonists base will be overrun in matter of minutes, shall we intervene
+Texas Red Take us into orbit Mr Malmsteen, we've seen enough.
*closes lighter*
I just downloaded this and played it for the first time.
I see why so many people love it
@Nemesis0300
Exactly, you hit the nail right on the head why the games feel so differant, and why Starcraft 1 just feels... I don't know, more REAL...
@Ignat Kozlov
Try "M.A.D. Menu theme" (the almost lost strategy 3D game)
"Les troyens"by Hector Berlioz, namely "Vallon Sonore"
Soldier Chorus from the Opera Dekabristi
Empire Earth 2 intro music
Goosebumps
This truly speaks volumes. To the kid who enjoyed the blood bath and the carnage. To the adult who saw sacrifice and hard choices life brings. This will always be in my heart as one of the greatest! For my comrades..... An friends who died... We move forward.
holy shit I never figured out the second part is in french, I just saw it in the comments here...
btw, I know a lot of people don't like SC2 story cause it's not as good as BW, but man, SC2 story is good in it's own way.
This masterpiece is pulling me away from my duties.
The song is in french, it's an old french military song.
the word "epic" isnt enough to describe the feeling i had first seeing the brood war intro.
Absolutely outstanding !!🧐
@Agent1W The problem that Wings of Liberty has is the same problem as a lot of sequels to old things have.
Whether it be the new Indiana Jones film, the Phantom Menace, or the Wings of Liberty, etc.
They all suffer from the same condition;
The creators decided that it was a good idea to acknowledge the fact that the there was time between the last game and the new game by atmospherically breaking the fourth-wall.
I want a game that continues like it was a day later -- I wanted Starcraft.
well thats classic!! i love it
@Speed4532 The name of the battlecruiser is actually Aleksander, the flagship of the UED expedition.
o wow..starcraft/broodwar...i remember these days, get goosebumps listening to this tune..
thank you so much! been looking for this forever! :)
of course things were always better then than now, the attitude towards doing things like planning a whole game was so much more than just a mercenary notion, look at mainstream media now, its a crazy world out there
greatest blizz composition ever...
Pure love here
Oh how I miss this
"Admiral, the Colonal's base will be overrun in a matter of minutes. Shall we intervene?
"Take us into orbit Mr. Mounsteel. We've seen enough."
The sound of Alexejs lighter, the leaving of the Battlecruiser Norad III, and the lost space marine with his empty Gaus Rifle.
Damn, there's not much games with that feeling.
Ah, I'm gonna watch it right now!
frkn love the ending
just hope that blizzard comes out with something just as beautiful, if not more so!
I'd like to hear an epic trailer version of this song
@Speed4532 I think it's "Mr. Malmsteen" but otherwise, good stuff!
@Cocarat206 Not much we can do.
Good to know that there are other out there who don't like things just because of who produced them.
Morituri Te Salutant
To those about to die, we salute you.
then again the thought of those about to rock comes to mind
When your friend says he can't help you in a video game because he's on the other side of the map: 1:35
Are you prepared to go all the way with this Alexi?
@Speed4532
Norad 3?! It's the Alexsander! The UED Expeditionnary Force Flagship! The Norad III is Duke's flagship! Jeez.
Soryy i should have included that i bought mine in S'pore in Sing dollars during the release date. The collector's edition looks cool...kinda like the diablo marine
@emilysmellylikeshit While that's a fair deduction, you must understand that they made SC2 feel like it was for kids.
In the originals, there was cold-blooded slaughter, suicide, war tactics, mature dialogue, and masterstroke campaigns (The UED story-line, being my all-time favorite.)
Arcturus was supposed to barely build his power again after of Brood War. Confederacy should have came back, not the Dominion. Arcturus should have been some universal tyrant that sapped the Confederacy's plans.
a classic.
@bender5836 I'll be honest. Besides before the invasion of char, it felt much less dark than SC and Brood war. A couple of gruesome scenes don't change that.Hopefull HotS will bring that dark theme to shine again. Of course that's my opinion anyways but most would agree on that.
Old blizzard, as someone who loved both Starcraft games diablo 2-3 and Warcraft 2.....
THIS SONG’S FOR YOU, BABY!!!
are you prepared to go all the way with this alexei?
And then there was Kerrigan. Her portrayal in Wings of Liberty was an atrocity onto the franchise. She was a believable, down-to-Earth character who looked out for her own interests but did so with great subtlety and finesse. She played sides for fools left and right, and won half the time not by brute force but by cunning. She was the character you loved to hate, the manipulative, Dr. House-like Queen Bitch of the Universe. In WoL, she was a simple megalomaniac. Mengsk suffered a similar fate.
The name of the song is morituri te salutant, translated from latin to english, it means 'those about to die salute you'.
Choir:
In my home.

This Santa effin rural slacker.
Dance Finally if you want!
Having long feet today!
Don't EAT Soup FOR YOUR SELF~!
Great memories ..
@MetaIhead89 cause they are cultured, and all cultured ppl end up being drawn to opera music. the music it self is brilliant and has been a form of telling a dramatic story for a looongggg time. thats my take on it. take it or leave it
Oh my god i think im gonna cry horribly!
@JurassicParker
admiral, shall we intervene?
That was a bad day for the Space Marines... :P
TRANSLATION:
Those about to die salute you
the living wish you well
Those about to die salute you
have courage
servant of god have hope
hope to live, hope
pray very faithful soldier
for victory today
by singing.
Don't be afraid
Of suffering
The future
Awaits us
The soldiers will return!
They will arrive victoriously!
Give everything for honor!
cool
Take is into orbit Mr Malmsteen
i wish i could find music similar to this
Elfenlied - Lilium
In WoL Raynor was turned to the medieval knight and not the little pirck escaping from great powers and held as a protege of the Protoss. In Utter Darkness is not depicted as dark future as prophecized by Duran. It's not enough ominous! An yes, Mengsk was turned from a Saddam Hussein like dictator into something like Baby Doc. Kerrigan, in my opinion, was turned into a New Overmind in WoL (I haven't played HotS yet) so there was little room for cunning alliances :/
