I'm 73 and most of my summer fishing is for surface fishing for carp, I love it!!! Tried all the dog mixers and found Pets at Home own brand mixer to be the best. Perfect size and float well. I always band them using a smallest hook I can get away with, usually a 12 or 14. The fish are not stupid and soon twig what's going on and if everything goes except hook bait I found it is best to move to a different swim well away and try again. Recently had a 17 lb 7 oz common on dog biscuit and a size 14 hook with a 5lb hooklength. And don't forget to grease the leader to the hook.

Just thought i would add a new comment as i fished here this monday 5th august 2024, all 3 lakes have just had a full makeover with pegs redone, excess reeds removed and trees and branches all cut back, gravel tracks and pathways have also been added.
Decent days fishing as i had set out to catch silvers on lake 1, but they were just finishing off the work so ended up having to fish lake 3.
Grand Total 48 fish of which 18 were carp upto 11lb 2oz.
    7 of them were doubles

Hi mate, fished this place twice it’s a nice place but not prolific.I fished the pole on lake 1 the first time caught all day but they was skimmers only one small carp and 1 tench.I didn’t see another carp caught either by the other two blokes on.Second time I got on lake 3 it was really slow a full lake and maybe 5 carp come out all day.All on bread on the surface, again I got one small carp and loads of bits nothing decent.Lake 2 looks the best I had a walk round and seen several fish landed I couldn’t get on lake 2 it was full.still a nice place and you had some lovely fish out.I’m thinking it might fish better when it cools down a bit on that lake 3 👍

I think it could have something to do with the fishery being fairly deep because you find the same at high heyes ! The carp are usually up in the water. But like you say it would be interesting to see how it fishes into autumn 🍂

Just thought I would re-post this from one of your earlier Vid's Matt as It's on Topic in case some missed it first time? ..................
Many a time, Carp will take loose fed dog biscuits, but will refuse the one with the hook!!, may have a lot to do the difference in buoyancy due to the weight of the hook. If that's the case, try carving a Large, Similarly coloured, Pop Up Boillie into the same shape & size as the dog biscuits.
The Pop Up is more buoyant & will counteract the weight of the hook so it looks more like the same as the Freebies!!

Hi Westy, great video as usual. You could try fishing a little lighter when surface fishing as the fish can spot the line against the sky. I firmly believe that's why they pick off all the free samples and ignore the hook bait.

Hi Westy a great fishing video and can I have an appearance fee because that’s me sat on the Shakespeare box lol, you should have said hello and explained who you where I’d have subscribed that day, , a little about me Iv recently taken up fishing from over 25 years ago and the tackle an box I was given to me and I tend to float fish but I’m impressed with peoples result on the method feeder so will have to buy a method feeder ledger, also il have to save for new tackle and be like you and have my rods n reel setup in the bag, on the day we caught some small roach and bream perch, carp I had a possible double but not sure as we didn’t own any scales and the other angler George who is in 70s caught a few carp with method feeder and and a possible double and he caught them right close to the banking he shouted me over look there feeding real close in, then last Thursday we went back and I went in your swim and we have scales now and I caught an 8lb 13lb mirror and later on again on float I hooked into something close in the margin where you were fishing and I couldn’t do anything with it and it stayed under the water and snagged me it was on my hook length broke it probably would have been my biggest ever fish I played it for a good 10 minutes before it escaped definitely a double as I had 10lb line an a 7lb hook length, you taught us something as we didn’t know you could fish on the top with floating biscuits at Heskin, I’m in my 60s and still learning I need and have been practicing my knots but I need to save for new rods etc and be more lightweight etc, keep up with the videos and if I ever see you at another venue or Heskin again I will come and say hello to you and your dad take care and tight lines

1st peg i tried was the lillies, tried it twice conviced it would fish netter, 3rd time before i started catching well from them. Theres a reason its called fishing and not catching lol.

Fishing seems so much cheaper further North. I'm in Norfolk and I'm paying £10-£15 a day. Also I've never known of a local lake to have an honesty box, we have baliffs that come and collect your money. Some of them are at your peg the second you set your bag down. Some of our lakes have some stupid rules too. At the minute I'm paying a tenner for 6 hours of fishing.

How would changing the look length on the method feeder effect line bites? A line bite is when a fish catches your mainline. If a fish is catching your mainline Lisa it means the fish are moving around closer in towards you . Hence why you need to drop the feeder back until you are on the fish. 🎣 tight lines !

I’m happy to take advice off anyone sponsored or not. But a fish sucking and blowing bait out but not getting hooked wouldn’t cause any indication on an alarm or a tip. Just watch some of the underwater videos out there, a fish has to move the feeder a long way before you get any indications. Why would anyone shorten a 4 inch method feeder hooklength? Any shorter would be counter productive
