In 1996, Nintendo along with Square-Enix came up with a game that was much different than no one would expect. Combining Mario with the turn-based battle style of Final Fantasy, it became known as Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
The story involves Mario as he must save the Mushroom Kingdom from the Smithy Gang, an evil organization devoted to world conquest. At the same time, Mario teams up with many allies such as a cloud boy named Mallow, Geno a doll possessed by a creature from Star Road, his longtime nemesis Bowser as well as Princess Peach.
This is merely the intro in which you can see for yourself. Boss battles are coming up so stay tuned.
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is the beginning of a true masterpiece.

I love this intro so much, it's such a perfect Attract Mode for any player starting up the game
It shows you a lot of cool stuff and places, but misplaces the enemies so you don't get spoiled on the plot and stuff, but you never realize that until you get there
Also how the intro only shows Mario, Mallow and Geno as playable, but highlights Bowser and Peach too
Which is a perfect Red Herring since both of them appear at the game's prologue, so you assume they wouldn't be playable....

Not to mention shows scenarios that are impossible like having solo Mario fight in Bean Valley.

Yeah, the intro omits almost all the Smithy-affiliated enemies, so that it looks like just another typical Mario plot. A new player might even assume Bowser is the main villain, and that Peach is simply captured by him (rather than both being playable) at first watch.
You even have the Swordless Bowser's castle in the title screen at first.
Yeah it kinda reminds me of a cartoon intro where it mixes actual "scenes" from the game with stuff that's unique to the intro. Pretty cool
The way the game looked absolutely blew my mind back in 1997
I hope they do this same opening cutscene in the remake!

This has to be the sequel to the Super Mario Bros. movie. I want to see Mallow and Geno kicking ass on the big screen!
I just love that Shimimura has gone on to do so well as a composer.
Shimomura is a legend. Truly.
She's reprising her role as the composer for the upcoming remake confirmed in today's Nintendo Direct as well

I remember getting stuck in the sunken ship when I was 7 years old. Now fast forward a couple of decades and was finally able to complete the game. Can’t wait for the remake

This video game menu gameplay cinematic is still one of the greatest cinematics to me; the cinematic evokes so much nostalgia for me. The colorful, lively Super Mario RPG world that they crafted amazed my young mind at the time. The unique, quirky soundtrack had such a different vibe, and the 3D/2D sprites were astounding for the time. I still remember getting this video game for Christmas and playing it all the time. Still to this day, Super Mario RPG is one of the GOATs in the light-hearted RPG genre. Thank you for the amazing memories SMRPG. I can't wait to play the Nintendo Switch Remake!

Played this game back in ‘97 as a kid. Was never able to complete it unfortunately. Been meaning to dust off the cassette and plug it back into the old SNES. But with yesterday’s announcement I won’t need to! Can’t wait to play it once again!

Imagine if they remade this game, the intro would probably be in CGI or something. That would be cool.
The artstyle was rendered in CGI reason why it was pixilated was because it was impossible to use CGI at the time
If Final Fantasy VII will be in Switch, Square-Enix can remade this game too

I knew the bowser battle theme (and the second part of Bowser's Keep) were remixes of the smb3 bowser battle music, but I never put this one together until seeing this comment!

I was happy they mimicked some of the gameplay segments of this intro into the Direct trailer.

Super Mario RPG has its funny moments, but IMO the gold standard for humor in a Mario game is Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. :D

So I have kind of an odd confession to make about this demo. When I was a kid I honestly thought that the Czar Dragon was the Birdo that shot fireballs from SMB2. Probably because he was red and used fire attacks. Not to mention they already showed Birdo in the opening as well. I had a weird mind as a kid.
I thought he was some sort of Blargg king based off his design (red, magma-colored bucktoothed dragon that lives in lava, plus he's got a crown). Stunned me to see he could turn himself into a swarm of Podoboos, then scared the Hell out of me when he disintegrated, only for that ghoulish hellbeast Zombone to rise from the battlefield in his place. Clearly not a Blargg.

I feel like this game is overshadowed by the paper Mario series. And I feel like when people say Mario rpg they will always talk about the first 2 paper Mario games, they don’t really bring up this game or the Mario and Luigi series. No hate to paper Mario but it’s kinda weird

I really don't know what Nintendo is waiting to release this game on Switch Online. After Earthbound was released last week, It's pretty much the only SNES big hit first party game that is still not on the service yet..
