I really hope Nintendo can make another project like this that really oozes the passion of the developers, SSBU was amazing but there were many limitations to what they could do (in the cases of World of Light and Spirits) imo there was more focus on amazing gameplay than on the charm of the game. Nintendo tends to play it safe now but the N64/Gamecube era of games was overflowing with quirk, personality and just plain heart, it saddens me to see how poorly they treat their older titles with bad ports and straight up never acknowledging them even though they’re some of the best memories of Nintendo games for many people. What some younger folk may not get is that no smash bros had the jump between games as the Original and Melee. The graphics, characters, orchestra , stages, and combat all were such a significant improvement from the first in just a 2 year span.
i grew up with Smash 4, yet Fountain of Dreams from Melee still gives me HUGE chills. NO other song i've ever listened to has ever felt so dramatic, so impactful, so "important", like it's the final fight at the end of a movie to determine if the main character wins or fails. The beginning of that song still feels absolutely stellar.
Tbh, the original was kinda more experimental and had a much less budget, but melee had the power of the GameCube and even though it was rushed, it is still very impressive considering that melee was probably there to show the power of the GameCube.
Straight up cried after watching this. This game heavily affected my childhood, and seeing the Sheik and Ness parts hit me right in the nostalgia, as my sister mainly used Zelda/Sheik, and I used Ness (now I use Roy, as we never unlocked anyone other than Luigi, Dr. Mario, Jigglypuff, Young Link, and Ganondorf). The opening was just the nost amazing thing I've ever seen at the time, and I remember when my sister and I unwrapped a GameCube on Christmas 2005 (being only 3 and my sister being 6) we were ecstatic. The GameCube was the first game console we ever had (aside from the V-Smile) and along with it, wegot Mario Kart: Double Dash, Wind Waker, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes (for my dad) Mario Party 6, and an odd game called "Super Smash Bros. Melee. The only characters we recognized were the Mario Characters, and Pikachu. We tried out this game first, and loved it. My sister went immediately to Zelda, because she looked cool. I went to Ness, because I had a similar looking hat to him. We spent HOURS playing it, being TERRIBLE at the game, to the point where the GameCube somehow BROKE because we were on it way too long. We got another one, but tried out the other games first. Wind Waker was single player, so we noped on that one. MP6 was fun, we weren't allowed to play Twin Snakes, Double Dash was fun, we played Bob-Omb blast a lot. But we always eventually went back to Melee. We got Brawl a couple years later, (me now being 8) and were good at it, but we always went back to Melee. We got SSBU recently, although my sister wasn't able to play it much with me, being in High School now.
SSBU wasn't as fun as Melee or Brawl, because... I had nobody to play with. Recently, I modded our Wii to play GameCube ROMs and such. Melee was the first game i downloaded and I unlocked everything in it, now being a skilled player. For some reason, it wasn't as fun. It was still fun, but not as fun as when I played the game with my sister. The GameCube was pretty much my childhood, and I wouldn't be NEARLY as into games if it weren't for it.
one of my alltime favorite childhood games man . . . this intro you have to play every time at the max fucking volume and scream with the announcer SUPER SMASH BROTHERS, MELEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Mario sunshine, double dash, wind waker, twilight princess, metroid prime, echoes, smash melee, pikmin, luigi's mansion. i miss my childhood so much right now.
TheAgentofthesystem I wouldn't say you're a child at that point anymore, but without nitpicking, I agree. I'm one year older than you and all those games (except Pikmin) were part of that period of my life. I miss those times.
One of if not the best smash intro. Especially considering 0:49. There's just something so magical about this scene. I can't quite describe it but it's just absolutely amazing. Gives me chills evertime.
The music, the choir singing, the beautiful transition of Zelda and Sheik playing the harp looking into the night sky. Yeah, it’s easily the best part of this whole opening but the entire opening as a whole is timeless
It's the heavy feeling of nostalgia that can really bring a man to his knees. It's the attachment I developed as a child, the love I've kept for it in the passing years. Here I am, more than a decade past its release, and I'm still infatuated with the game. Snuggled up in a blanket, controller in hand, and a whole weekend to kill. The days I would spend trying to find new, unique characters was my beloved quest. Each day I played it, I felt greeted by the introduction. Man, Melee truly was my pride and joy. I'll keep it for the rest of my life and cherish it like the true nerd I am.
Jeffrey Dirts I had it too and mine disc broke from me playing it too much it was awesome then I played brawl and that disc broke got anthoer one and that one broke as well
I don't know why they've showed this clip to the public. That man's children or wife could be watching. I am highly shamed by news stations for putting this on their broadcasts
Am I the only one who absolutely loves 0:18? The choreography on Peach and the cinematography between Mario and Bowser is SOOOO GOOOOOD. It goes a long way towards showing the viewer exactly who these characters are and what they're like. Peach is elegant and bright, Bowser is menacing and dark and Mario is split between the two with the displays of his fighting moves showing how he prefers to let his actions do the talking for him. Or maybe I'm reading too much into this, I don't know. :V
This is the best video game intro I have ever seen. Melee is the best video game I have ever played as well. They clearly worked very hard to make this game. A game so deep even today it's being played at major tournaments and viewed by thousands of people. It was from a time when games were masterpieces. Worked on through and through.
***** It actually ended up working BETTER as a competitive game, it's kind of sad to see Sakurai completely dump on an entire community of a game simply because he sees no future. And honestly, competitive smash is the largest smash community there is.
***** You're right. You didn't... but Sakurai did. And ever since he did, people have been bitching about competitive play. "Durrr... TOURNEYFAGS! You play Smash competitively!?!?!?!? Durrr... Me hate you now." That being said, when something ends by clearly labelling winners and losers, that means there was competition in mind. Otherwise, every match would end with, "You All Win," or, "No Contest."
+The Shiny Greninja because in melee the characters of the Zelda game were based on the Ocarina of Time game, the only character based on Majora's Mask was young link and was a unlockable secret character, so, the had to keep it "secret" (not really since termina great bay was a stage in the game).
Seriously, this intro makes what would have otherwise just been a simple crossover game feel like the most important journey you will ever take in your life.
I'll never forget the day my dad drove me all the way up to a mall(Member those) and bought this game for acing my report card back in 6th grade. Best times ever.
We've made it! At the time I'm posting this of December 3rd, 2021, Super Smash Bros. Melee is now a 20 year-old game. This is the first Smash game I've ever played. I played it since around 2009. It's so nostalgic to me and an amazing game. It has a decent character roster, great gameplay, the best intro, and amazing soundtracks. Thank you Masahiro Sakurai for making not only an excellent video game, but also a work of art. Same applies to the latest Smash game. ❤
When I put this game in for the first time and watched this intro by the end I was convinced it was the coolest thing I've ever seen. I get such mad goosebumps every time it gets to the title, the voice is so epic it makes me choke up even today as a 22 year old
I absolutely love that the screen goes black, the music stops and it just says Nintendos All Stars in.. then just right back into like nothing happened
One of the few things that I love the most in this game and imho is the best announcer of all the other smash games. Something about the mixing in the voice that makes it so good to hear.
The late 90s, early 2000s, were so artistical for videogames, the beginning of the intro it's so symbolical, Mario coming back to life, it's like a way to say ''You're not only a videogame character, you're here for something epic, and that it's, battling''. I love the way it portray the characters.
Happy birthday Melee, my favorite game of all time! Wouldn’t be the same person without the influence and the people I met thru this amazing piece of art.
With no nostalgia for this game, I can say that the opening is pretty good and was probably mind blowing at the time. However, I think it's overplayed how good it is. Don't take that the wrong way. This is the best Smash intro and it is pretty darn good. It's just not the best thing I have ever seen.
Nope not even close smh and now people going to complain more about fire emblem when they going to find out it same singer who did fate lost in thought

The part where DK's getting shocked by Samus' charged energy ball is a reference to the first Smash Bros. intro where DK and Samus are fighting.
I've heard that's supposed to be Mewtwo's Shadow Ball
looks more like mewtwos
@@IDisagree100 OK, then why in the world would they show Mewtwo's attacks when there are no other locked characters in this intro?
@@bombabombom3603 have you played melee?? it looks exactly like mewtwos attack...why not make it look like samus' attack if it was samus' attack? its just an easter egg.
@@bombabombom3603 well in the intro you can see Ganondorf, Pichu, and Jigglypuff. They're locked at the beginning of the game.

Brawl’s Intro: Mostly Cutscenes from subspace emissary and some gameplay footage
4’s Intro: Scenes from trailers and gameplay footage
Ultimate’s Intro: A few scenes from World Of Light and mostly gameplay footage

Yeah, a lot from trailers. Plus there's also a lot of gameplay footage.

We all know this is what we came for…
Straight up cried after watching this.
The GameCube was pretty much my childhood, and I wouldn't be NEARLY as into games if it weren't for it.
fucking cry baby

I'll keep it for the rest of my life and cherish it like the true nerd I am.
dude, I love nostalgia so much. Its a great thing, I feel the exact same way about it, like you do.
I played this when I was 10 and now I'm 26 wtf

Am I the only one who absolutely loves 0:18? The choreography on Peach and the cinematography between Mario and Bowser is SOOOO GOOOOOD. It goes a long way towards showing the viewer exactly who these characters are and what they're like. Peach is elegant and bright, Bowser is menacing and dark and Mario is split between the two with the displays of his fighting moves showing how he prefers to let his actions do the talking for him.
Or maybe I'm reading too much into this, I don't know. :V

It's really cool how they brought those four back for the Brawl reveal years later.
This is the best video game intro I have ever seen.
Melee is the best video game I have ever played as well. They clearly worked very hard to make this game. A game so deep even today it's being played at major tournaments and viewed by thousands of people.
It was from a time when games were masterpieces. Worked on through and through.
AmericanBuizel You realize Melee was also developed by Sakurai right?
Andrew St. Clair Exactly. He didn't even name the online mode fit to tourney standards "Competitive," he just called it "For Glory."
Allmywhat all the budget was in the intro...it's broken but still good
The Sheik scene is my favourite
+Mannequin Victoria Chase Indeed
I had a massive crush on Sheik because of that scene when I was younger 😂 used to think she was a boy!
+Fernanda ME TOO HAHAHAHAHA but i always see her like a girl
I wonder why the moon wasn't the "creepy" moon
+The Shiny Greninja because in melee the characters of the Zelda game were based on the Ocarina of Time game, the only character based on Majora's Mask was young link and was a unlockable secret character, so, the had to keep it "secret" (not really since termina great bay was a stage in the game).
sheik and zelda is the best part D:
actually the DK part (aerial view) is the best one and the sheik part is the 2nd best.

Kirby's Butter Building
Every time I see the Sheik scene I just get reminded that a game focused around Sheik-Zelda in all her ninja glory would be pretty cool.

Ah yes the days where I was broken.
This will never *not* be epic
When I put this game in for the first time and watched this intro by the end I was convinced it was the coolest thing I've ever seen. I get such mad goosebumps every time it gets to the title, the voice is so epic it makes me choke up even today as a 22 year old
I absolutely love that the screen goes black, the music stops and it just says Nintendos All Stars in.. then just right back into like nothing happened

Best Smash Bros intro without a doubt
The late 90s, early 2000s, were so artistical for videogames, the beginning of the intro it's so symbolical, Mario coming back to life, it's like a way to say ''You're not only a videogame character, you're here for something epic, and that it's, battling''. I love the way it portray the characters.
WHY DO I REMEMBER THIS SO WELL IM CRYING

YES!
Happy birthday Melee, my favorite game of all time! Wouldn’t be the same person without the influence and the people I met thru this amazing piece of art.
Most people love the Shiek part, but it makes me sad because nobody ever acknowledges that the music played during it is from Kirby.
Interesting that they included a specific character theme in the main song
It's Kirbys?
Jeez I didn't realize it would be KIRBYS!
Can you link the theme on here mate?

It's because it's a bit remixed into sounding like a Zelda song
Now Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has to *SOMEHOW* top this opening.

With no nostalgia for this game, I can say that the opening is pretty good and was probably mind blowing at the time. However, I think it's overplayed how good it is. Don't take that the wrong way.
