- Is there anything better than an old truck? Well maybe an old truck that doesn’t handle like an old truck. Ill handling vehicles will take the fun out of the driving experience quicker than you can say ‘’this thing sucks to drive.’’ This where the aftermarket comes into play. There are a whole slew of companies that make suspension components for the beloved Squarebody trucks, but what is the best choice? For us QA1 was a no brainer. QA1 offers a complete bumper to bumper bolt on kit for 73-87 squarebody trucks. They offer rear kits for GM 10 and 12 bolt axles and Ford 9’’ axles. This eliminates leaf springs, replacing them with coilovers and a three link. The front kit includes upper and lower control arms, with improved geometry and coilovers. All built right in Lakeville, Minnesota. We complemented our new suspension with a Borgeson quick ratio steering box, a Ford 9’’ rear axle from Quick Performance , and Halibrand 19’’ and 20’’ wheels, wrapped with Michelin Pilot S tires. All those top notch parts has this truck handling more like a sports car than an old truck, and yes it’s still an old truck per say but I’d take an old truck over a high end sports car any day of the week. Thank you!
Sweet build!
I don't want to be "that guy", but I will just in case anyone goes looking for that specific type of punch. I believe it to be a Transfer Punch.
Thanks buddy!
Looking Good 👍 I have been wanting to do some radical changes to G Series vans which essentially use the same components however it is potentially more of a challenge in the rear, being on a unitized chassis.
One thing is shaving weight off of that crazy heavy crossmember if not replacing it entirely. I have a 4x4 van that was not built by me and it hardly has anything holding the engine in place with a straight axle and leaf set up. That has been the inspiration; I feel the original parts were overbuilt.
Thank you! A pro touring van would be bananas!
Great job . I am putting the front QA1 on my 64 C10 step side short bed. 4 wheel disc and 5 speed with a 327. Very nice work.
Thank you! Your 64 is gonna be a ton of fun to cruise
Nice work, boys! Looks like a well thought out system!
I’m doing a 65 and I’m hoping for awesome steering and performance
Great video. I’m in southern Ohio. Love the truck! I have an 83’ that I’m thinking about back saying the front end also. I heard you have to modify the wiper mounts and use the 73-80 wiper arm assembly. Is that true?
Thank you! Yes the you will need to install 73-80 wiper transmission assembly. The 81-87 assembly hits the hood. That will involve drilling a few holes
A nice pant jobe man
Thank you it’s natural 😆
Great video. Question how did you het the kit for a nine inch rear end? TY😊
So, my 65 had truck arm suspension. How much meat ya able to get under YOUR truck?
We run a 10 wide out back and that’s about the limit because of fender well width.
What about the front suspension
We installed that too. It’s in the last half of the video. It works really well.
What spring rate did you order? 170, 200 or 250 #? I have an 85 shortbox GMC. Not going to tow with it, just use as hot rod. If you know front spring rate, please pass along also, if possible. Thank you. Awesome video! Just wheeled mine in shop. Had it since 87, cant wait to get started :,-)
Thank you! I believe we went with 250 in the rear and 750 up front. You’re gonna love it!
@@CovertsShop Thank you 👍👍
@@billmcmeekin7909 You're welcome
Ok so another question, I’m having trouble installing my rear swaybar because of the two radius where it turns towards the front of the truck is too narrow to mount it to the axle since the center section is huge
I haven’t ran a rear sway bar yet so I don’t have a good answer for that just yet
Oh maaaan you had a 454 in it???
Sure did. It was a borrowed engine from a buddy.
What kinds of rims are those on your truck? Nice video!
he says in the video
Where are you at
We are in the Tiffin area
Can you please tell me what is the backspace of those rear wheels? 4.0 or 5.5? Thanks!
I actually went and looked this up off of my invoice for you. They are 5.5 backspace. They fit well. Hope this helps!
@@CovertsShopThank you very much! It sure helps! Too bad, I can't find any polished 20x10 with 5.75 BS. I think they stop making them. I can only have them with a 4.0 BS. Do you think by any chance that they could fit a static lowered truck with a 4.0 BS? Thanks, and you have an really sweet truck BTW!
@@dominicgoulet738 your welcome. No I don’t believe the 4” BS wheel fit. These are tight on both the inner and outer.
I see, Ohio
Bro I want that system I have a 83
I can tell you without a doubt it is well worth the money. The old truck hooks and books now.
What kind of muffler u using
Flowmaster Flow FX 2.5 round case.
Can I do this without c notch
You can not. The c notch is built into the outside plate.
i'm a broken record moaning on every car youtube channel about why nobody in American seems to be able to fit a safety guard to a grinder, no wonder you call them "death wheels" without the guard the wheel can shatter into you face, you hand can slip into the back of the wheel and the sparks flyback in your face. its just crazy! the guards don't even get in the way. You can only cut with the front half of the wheel anyway. I wish every youtube channel in American would stop setting such a terrible safety example. (hopefully reading this will make at least one person safer. )
I feel your concern and I do appreciate it. But the guards are cumbersome.
