P30SK vs PX4 SubCompact. Are DA/SA Subcompacts A Dying Platform

  • Close up look at the subcompact versions of two of my favorite pistols. HK’s P30SK and Beretta’s PX4 Storm SubCompact.
Not many DA/SA subcompact options remain in 2023. (The PX4 SC no longer in production this year). Are there others I’m not thinking about?
Thanks so much for watching and please consider subscribing. Trying to grow my little channel.

I hope it’s not a dying platform. The only way I will carry is DAO (revolver) or DA/SA with a decocker, no safety. A smaller package DA/SA would be nice. These ones are a bit chunky. I would love to see Smith and Wesson offer the CSX in DA/SA w/de-cocker. That would be perfect imo.

Yes, we definitely need a smaller DA/SA! I’m disappointed that 3 manufacturers, Sig, CZ, & HK that are known for DA/SA put out micros that are striker fired.

Weird how things go in cycles. When I was getting into pistols in the early-mid 2000s, single actions were the cool thing, strikers were still the upstarts, and DA/SA were hated by most. Now it seems that some people actually like DA/SA. I kind of like it, just because it's weird and idiosyncratic, but I've never seen any advantage to them over strikers. The one advantage people ever list is "it's safer because you can thumb the hammer when holstering." Well, I guess so, but a striker with a trigger safety won't be fired when holstering either, and it also won't have multiple different trigger pulls to learn.

I just recently purchased the P30sk, I mean so recenty I have not even gotten it yet. At one time I considered the PX 4 Storm but disliked the slide mounted safety. My current daily carry is a Sig P229 Elite in .40. Like the Arkansas Gun Guy, I don't like Strikers. I like the safety of a DA/SA ESPECIALLY carrying apendex IWB. My good friend of 48 years died on 9/25/23 and left me all his firearms including a Ruger LC9 which I didn't like. But I sort of liked carrying something a little smaller and lighter than my P229 . So I offed that LC9 at pawn shop/gun shop and plunked down the scratch for the P30sk at a different gun store. It was P30sk with no safety #81000086. I can hardly wait. I hope I get if before Christmas.

I have both pistols and carried them regularly up until like yu, I purchased the Sig P365. Its all I carry now due to its superior carry capabilities, ergo, night sights, capacity and overall size. The others now seem heavy in your waistline, and low on capacity for size. I will on rare occasion grab one or the other for the day but really just so I can justify keeping them around. Th PX and HK do see range time though and I shoot them bo th well. But from a sheer carry perspective, its the P365 all the way.

“Dying” would imply there were, at one time, many subcompact DA/SA’s to choose from. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t think that was ever the case. That said, we are clearly not seeing any new entries in this market - I think the P30SK was introduced almost a decade ago. I think that most people in the market for a subcompact, where by definition size is important, choose to go with a lighter, slimmer, cheaper, and simpler striker-fired gun or a SAO hammer-fired weapon. I love my P30SK and I love DA/SA’s in general. But I reach from my p365 or 365XL more often.

Just picked up a P30SK V1 (with the LEM) trigger, and I really love this a lot. About the same size as my Shield (just a bit thicker) but carries 15+1 instead of 8+1. The LEM trigger allows you to carry with one in the chamber with peace of mind, without having to mess with a safety. I wouldn't feel comfortable carrying a striker-fired gun chambered without a safety on, and having the safety on can mean troubles if you have to draw while under heavy stress.
The one thing I care a bit less about the P30SK is the paddle mag release, unless you have massive hands it forces you to slightly alter your grip to activate it, but it's something you just gotta get used to.

I have the PX4 Storm Sub. I personally love it (and not fortifying my biases for purchase). I had it blessed by St. Ernest of LTT with a trigger job and cerakote. I don't know if it's from practice, but I can shoot it a little better than my Compact Carry ( Yep, one of those Beretta Fanboys). But the best part of the PX4 Sub is the fact that it takes the PX4 family of magazines. If you want a subcompact with 21rounds, you can (defeats the purpose of a sub, but nice to see the option). Plus, it's pretty. Stubby, the bull/flared barrel, etc. it's just cool. But the best part is that it's a subcompact that handles almost like a full size. Why Beretta discontinued this is just just crazy. I hope they choose a worthy replacement.

@@richdubbya I have the PX4 Subcompact and bought it mainly because of the looks and the fact it is DA/SA. If it weren't for the factory iron sights, I would consider it to be the ultimate subcompact pistol. The PX4 subcompact shoots extremely low from point of aim out of the box and the sights are ridiculously difficult to remove. If you do manage to remove them without damaging your slide, there aren't many options that fit this pistol appropriately. I think the limited sight options and no option for an optic is the reason this pistol didn't gain any traction. If Beretta would re-release the PX4 Subcompact with a design to accommodate more iron sight options and an optic cut slide, I would buy 10 to ensure I'd have one for life.

The DA/SA/LEM platform is the superior CCW option, and the subcompact versions are far from dead. *We need micro versions.*
Don’t forget the P2000SK. The P30SK is superior, yet the P2000SK is slightly slimmer and shorter. The CZ RAMI has been discontinued, but they can still be had. The goes for the SIG P224, which is chunky af, and its reliability must be thoroughly vetted.

Subcompacts or micro 9s don't pique my interest. Too hard to operate/reload and the barrels are too short (velocity loss). I can hide a 'compact' size (G-19size) pistol easy enough and I want a barrel closer to 4". *IF* I were to carry appendix and *IF* I were to carry 9mm, a hammer-fired carry pistol for me would be the CZ P-01 (DA/SA) or S&W Equalizer (hammer w/grip safety). But... I normally don't carry 9mm or appendix... and I (gasp!) don't use an optic on my carry gun, nor do I carry with a light on the rail. I'm just a Fudd, I guess...

All esle being eaual, Ill take the HK p30sk because you thumb sweep down to take it off safe rather than push forward like the Berettas.

Are you just talking 9mm? Bersa has double action subcompact pistols ,and there's the Beretta 3032/21a pistols. There's always the crap tastic Sccy pistols, but they're DAO.

This guy really doesn’t understand how striker guns work. He thinks hammer fired is safer because it can be decocked, but doesn’t understand that strikers are never fully cocked and you finish setting the striker during your trigger pull. However he was talking about an sig so I do understand his fear of pointing a loaded sig at his junk, solely due to the reputation of sigs going off unexpectedly.

Typically people feel safer with the longer and heavier trigger pull of DA/SA guns over light striker fired triggers. Less likely for negligent discharge.

I like being able to thumb the hammer when re-holstering as an added safety measure.

    HK all the way

Yes, the micro 9 striker fired guns have killed these DA SA guns. I mean why would I ever want two different weight teigger pulls?? Especially when striker fired guns, particularly glocks are very safe and have amazing drop saftey performance. It absolutely makes zero sense to me.
Ive heard people say with apendix carey they dont like a gun pointed at thier privates or leg with a gun that doesnt have a decocker. And Again I say, why? The gun WILL NOT just go off by itself. You MUST pull the trigger. And a DA SA gun has no advantage over a striker fire!
I am just so against having 2 different trigger pull weights. Its silly. It comes from an era when law enforcement was wary and afraid of semi automatics because they were switching over from revolvers and were afraid of 5lb trigger pulls.

The longer and heavier first trigger pull of DA/SA is what makes people feel more comfortable rather than the light trigger pull of striker fired guns. Less likely for a negligent discharge.
