Soooo... the meaning behind the three dudes in the beginning has to do with alchemy principals and and secret societies conspiring to hide the universal truths(using heavy symbolism with the cutting apple, its seeds, the black ooze, the finger flame, etc), the second part is harder to equate to the message but there are elements of illusion and enlightenment

PARABOLA a symmetrical open plane curve formed by the intersection of a cone with a plane parallel to its side. The path of a projectile under the influence of gravity ideally follows a curve of this shape. Also today i realized how these guys are spitting truth , this is the story of Adam and Eve that's how i see it today LOL. Did you see the apple from the garden did you see the star shape ?

Trust me on this one. If You give every Tool song second or even third chance You will love every single song from them. I got into Tool around 1998 and I remember that Aenima was very strange but something different as well. It`s 2022 and I still can find something new in every song.

I walked into Best Buy and bought my first CD at like 14, and it was Aenema. I remember it really intimidated me just from the cover art, but it looked cool, so what the hell. Twenty years later and I'm such a simp for this band, lol....

@@yakamen I did the same at The CD Store in 97 at age 19. Listened to the intros to the first five songs and bought it.
Still one of my favourite albums!

I got into Tool around the summer of 2000 when I was 12/13.
I bought Undertow and Ænima the same day I believe and haven't looked back since. I still remember the Ænima theme for their website like it was yesterday!
And then a year after I started listening to them Lateralus drops...ON MY 14TH BIRTHDAY! BEST! BIRTHDAY PRESENT! EVER! lol
It's crazy to think sometimes that I've been listening to Tool since the ass end of the Ænima era! It has definitely been a journey growing up along side the band as their music matured. I'm only 3 years older than the band itself! It definitely feels like we grew up together!

Same. Case in point, I listened to Fear Inoculum once and then basically shelved it for months. Now 7empest, Invincible, Descending... some of the best!

I found the cd of Aenema at a used music place. I had never heard of them, and I'm an adventurer when it comes to music, so I bought it because I had a feeling about it.
Jesus CHRIST!! The entire album had me in a fkn trance.
I went out the next day, to the music store at the mall, and picked up Undertow. Now I had Tool's full discography (at the time).
To this day they're still one of my all-time favourite rock bands.
On a related note, I found Metallica's "Ride The Lightning" on vinyl, when it was new in the summer of '84, and bought it because, on the back cover, a photo of the group showed me that they weren't a big-hair band, and wore regular street clothes. It made me think that they must be all about the audio, and fk the visuals.
I was soooooo happy when I took that album home and spun it.
Again, the next day I went out and found "Kill 'em All" (my favourite metal album, period. Rust in Peace and Ride The Lightning are tied for second).
Back to the used music shop. Saw a cd with the iconic image of Thich Quang Dùc self-immolating. I bought it. It was Rage Against The Machine. I still listen to that whole album regularly.
And I see I"m rambling, so I'll wrap ot up, in a second.
Marilyn Manson. Saw the cd, no idea who it was or the genre of music, but... Marilyn MANSON?
I bought it. Only liked two songs, "Lunch box" and "Cake and Sodomy", but I felt like it was worth the purchase (no mp3 yet).
Ok, I need to let my thumbs breathe.

This song I'd say is a straight up banger (it doesn't require many close listens to appreciate its power) and one of the most beloved of all Tool tracks. Technically it's split in two (Parabol and Parabola) but the second part (Parabola) I can put on repeat any day because the riffs are incredible and the high energy immediately has me head banging. Without the video to think about, the music is some of the absolute best they've ever done. I think you'll want to go back to it way more if you listen to it without watching the video (which is phenomenal but distracting if you've never heard the songs before).

I understand why people get freaked out by Tools videos but I personally love them. I was into clay sculpture when I was a teenager and loved making weird humanoid creatures. These videos were right up my alley. Plus, you have to remember this was the 90s/early 2000s when music videos were still a thing. Tools videos stuck out from the typical produced music videos we got in those times. Just like the music, it's a unique experience that had their own signature sound/look.

I'm digging your reactions to Tool my man. Seeing them live is the ultimate sonic and visual experience. Over the years their stage show has become more and more elaborate. This past tour for Fear Inoculum was a different level. Hopefully we don't wait several years for another tour. In my opinion the title track to Fear Inoculum is the best song on the album. We waited 13 years for that album to drop and they released the title track a few weeks before the album was released and it did not disappoint. I highly recommend you reacting to it. The soundscape is incredible. Engineering and production is phenomenal. Carry on bud. Keep up the fun videos.

You'll probably want to research Adam Jones and his history with special effects. He was first a special effects artist on movies like Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, Nightmare on Elm Street, and more... This is also 2 songs on one Parable/Parabola (both included here).

Thanks man for tackling visuals and audio at same time! Certainly brave. Been listening to tool for awhile and have been to some concerts and have started to notice some re-occurring themes in their visuals. I personally think some of it may appear random to throw people off but a lot of it has deliberate intention. For instance, if you look at the side of the cut fruit their is a 7 pointed star and the vomit circle (lol) also becomes a 7 sided star. That star was also front and center in the last concert I went tool. I found out that if you stand on top of a hill the same day for 7 consecutive years and looks at the position of venus you can create a 7 sided star (I know super nerdy). But anyways I've noticed they make other astronomical references in their music to highlight certain concepts. The 7 sided star also has many religious connotations. I honestly feel like one could get a 4 year degree in interpreting tool musicianship, lyrics and visuals. They are super cerebral with subtly, nuance and have multiple layers of complexity each step of the way.

There’s a concept in Hinduism called the Maya- a belief that we are all immortal and the gods have the power to convince us that what’s happening here on earth is reality when it is just an illusion. This song contains so many references to reincarnation and Hindu ideals…

Way too many signals and your brain can't process them all , at least that's how I feel.Thats why coming back at those songs will make you notice stuff that wasn't there at first and be like WOW! Their videos are basically art for the sake of art; there's very little direct correlation between them and the lyrics, though they can be applied indirectly depending on the listener's experience. Adam Jones, the guitarist, comes up with all of this wild stuff -- he worked doing special effects for movies into the early '90s. You may recognize the antenna man as Tricky.

the end of the song where the two eyes lift up the body is called kundalini awakening. This is a an actual experience that one can go through. It rises up your body and cleaning all the chakra centers. When it passes your heart it explodes in indescribable blissfulness in unimaginable state of freedom. You completely lose sense of physicality, merge with the totality of existence and lose perception of individual existence and division of things, all becomes one. When it reaches your head you completely turn inward. There is just blackness from which white light shines. It is totally nuts. I cried my eyes out for half our when happened.

"I thought I was ready, but..." My sentiments exactly!!
Lateralus, btw. And right up that alley, for sure.
I'm sure it's been said before. You really really really shouldn't try to experience the music video as your first experience of any of their stuff.
You totally missed this song, tripping out on the visuals. The video is definitely way trippy and way cool, but the song is so much more than what you realized this time thru. You picked up on some of it FROM the visuals, but I don't think you were really listening. You "heard" the song, while you watched the video.
This is one of my favorites of their entire catalog, and for plenty good reason.
You'll get it, I have faith in that.

Tool is.not taking drugs period. Sober is not about anyone in the band. Tool guitarist Adam Jones explained in an interview with Guitar School: "The song and video are based on a guy we know who is at his artistic best when he's loaded. A lot of people give him s--t for that. I don't tell people to do or not do drugs. You can do what you want, but you have to take responsibility for what happens. If you become addicted and a junkie, well, that's your fault." Maynard owns a vineyard and understands some drugs can be positive, but the number of people he has seen die throughout his career has made him avoid drugs. He is too intelligent given his three active bands aren't something a drug user could manage.

This song got me through my good friends death. It's an incredible song. This is probably their best video In my opinion and probably their second best song behind Lateralus. The video is full of symbolic imagery.
The 5 to 6 to 7 on the apple hands at the beginning is occult magical progression. The beating heart little guy is the ego I believe who gets killed by the ball then he dissects his ego after it's death. When he goes to the forest (represents chaos) The final image is the net of being which is what Alex Grey saw as human beings spirits all connected together in our true space in the higher dimension. It's pretty wild and I've seen similar imagery on high powered hallucinogens.

I feel like the tool videos often work Against the song, making you struggle to pay attention to both, - the only video I think they did that really compliments the song is Vicarious (from 10,000 days). It's also their most advanced video and they spent a year developing it.

Why do you look like Ari Shaffir? Lol. Also, Adam, the guitarist, created most of their videos. He went to school focusing on sculpting and special effects design.

"doesn't have too much replay value" 😩 oh no. maybe give it another go without the visuals (as much as i love them) and bring up the lyrics. it's so incredibly powerful. i don't think it'll take much for it to click, and when it does, you'll listen to it over and over.

Alright another rapper about to be shook loose from his hip-hop chains and head some real fucking talented artists. The Tool library in Chrono order sprinkling in a pinch of Puscifer and a dash of A Perfect Circle as you're coming in hot down the stretch. During all that, all the obligatory Metallica bangers...
Master of Puppets, The Four Horsemen, Orion
and the rest. Then it's down the line on the Metallica express. 1 million views for the Metallica catalog reactions. Work in a healthy serving of Megadeth, deep diving into their masterpiece "Countdown to Extinction" album. Get back to Metallica reactions. Don't do like everybody else does and skip some sinfully underrated bangers like, #TheSmallHours #Cyanide #MyFriendOfMisery #DontTreadOnMe
#TheGodThatFailed and obviously from the "Black Album", #SadButTrue , #EnterSandman , #KingNothing. The you'll be baptized in all the Slipknot craze and #Nightwish #GhostLoveScore and a must for Pink Floyd fans, Nightwish's cover of #HighHopes. There's plenty more, unless you've already been down that rabbitt hole, in which case I guess I better go check out your video catalog.
