    This song really makes a lot more sense in the context of the first part which you guys skipped. Themes are introduced, mood is established, and so on. Personally, just listening to this part for me would be like starting a song half-way through. Enjoyed the reaction none the less, and the vids in general, thanks!

    This is actually the second part of Parabol. They're best listened to together.

    • @senna1995
      @senna1995 Год назад +3

      That's conceding that parabola on itself doesn't stand tall, which it does. I'm not mad over a straight up parabola reaction. It's just an extended build up to parabola as good as parabol is - it's not necessary, especially when it's seemingly high level musicians reacting.

    • @user-fm8xs3hr3w
      @user-fm8xs3hr3w Год назад +4

      @@senna1995 I 100% agree. Although so many Tool fans feel it's "essential" to listen to Parabol first, it's definitely not necessary ESPECIALLY because Tool has it as two seperate tracks.

    • @iisotter8944
      @iisotter8944 Год назад

      @@user-fm8xs3hr3w the poster is right on this one, to appreciate you need Parabol first, the phrasing is introduced through Parabol. When listening to a concerto there are breaks between the parts, but the phrasing carries you through the emotion ride. The phrasing at the end of Parabola bringing you back to Parabol this is purposeful. Like Wings for Marie 1&2.

    David Bottrill is the engineer. I agree that the engineering is underappreciated on all of Tool's records, the panning, and dynamic range is always at the top of the line. My counterpoint to the studio production making the song is that - this song still absolutely rips live and maintains all of its power. To say the song is nothing without the engineering is a bit extreme.

But listening to JB talk on engineering, I would love to see what he thinks of Radiohead "In Rainbows" live from the basement. They do the whole album, but if you want to pick out a song I would go for the first track "weird fishes arpeggio." I personally love radiohead and that album, but even if they aren't your jam really think JB would appreciate the engineering that was done live for this whole album by the guitarist Johnny Greenwood. He's my favorite guitarist and also a great composer and engineer in his own right.

    it Is a shame you missed the first part (they sometimes did that live as well), because what you talk about at 8:23 basically describes Parabol (essentially the first part of the song, though confusingly split into two parts at the transition - so you can skip to the the Rock part of it on the cd i guess, but for me it was a mistake by them). it ought to be seen as one track, as on the official video made by the guitar player which is amazing but also adds an extra layer of madness and confusion. i'm guessing you're fucking with us with that youtube clip, or there's yet more dinguii involved. i've been scrolling vevo and youtube for hours and nowhere is there a clip with the Aenima cover playing ParAbola with vevo in the corner. nice. i'd go back to the beginning of one of the albums if eye were you (or production eras - two releases with Sylvia Massey and a different bass player, then the two you've been doing with David Bottrill at the controls, and the last two they have produced themselves with Joe Barresi) and let it run. all art makes more sense from the beginning, and in order. that's how the albums are made, with that in mind, a sequence where the songs are chapters of the book. you could put it to the vote? if you're happy to just jump around and it's anger and supreme drumming you're after. Ticks and Leeches.

    It is excellent listening to you guys react. The qulity of Tools engineering can not be disputed, live they are far better than recorded. However if a band had the greatest engineer, the greatest mixer, but were rubbish composers or/and bad on their instruments then nothing can save them, and the world is full of these bands, there is only 1 Tool.
    It could also be said of all musical compositions that when broken down they are simplistic, this is the job of a conductor, but it is the composition as a whole that makes it great or not. I also think the intention of the artist whether conscious of it or not plays a huge role.

    Ha, I love the lack of chemistry between these two on this video. When one's like "Oh, shit" and turns to the other, they're not paying attention and vice versa.

    You are right, BUT they sound as good or even better live. Their live engineering is as good as their studio.
    I also liked how for the first time I saw you reacting to the voice and not just the drums.

      Well fuck he talking about engineering my ass let's hear his work for someone to critic someone's work he must at least be at his level or better these guys are barely competent to speak about music for them to critic pure artistic genius is beyond me or maybe I'm stupid and I'm not a tool fan.

    I can see you two play different instruments because you are both focused on different things. One on the drums and one on the guitar and bass. It’s a default when listening to tool because they are a cohesive unit of a band. Need to listen to it as a whole band not individual instruments. It’s an experience as a whole but not everyone gets it

    you skipped the entire intro (not so deep) and yet heard the lyric "Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate the chance to be alive and breathing"....not so deep....love you guys and this channel, but you're off on that one ......the deepest of songs on the deepest of albums....let's not forget, you guys were just rocking out and we all saw it, physically moving to the music....music that is now 22 years old.....22 years

    Dude, you only played the second half of a two part song. You simply cannot play Parabola without Parabol. It's like peanut butter without jelly.
