I don't know. I've had some great exercise experiences with Tool. It's amazing having endorphins while using the tool song structure as motivation for High intensity interval training.

I will never forget that when I was in the Navy one of my buddies made me a couple MP3 CDs with a bunch of music on it and I had never heard Tool before. I happened to be driving across the US from Virginia to California and I had 10 days to travel and get to my new command. I decided to visit the Grand Canyon on my way there and I just so happened to get to the Tool part of one of the CDs. Yeah I saw tool for the first time in 2001, it was the second concert I've experienced and I still think it's one of the best I've seen. And I go to many many shows.
When I first heard "Sober" I was like "yeh thats cool" , when I first heard AEnima album I thought "yeh its quite good" after another week I realised it was the best album I had heard, every album takes a while to grow on me, but they get better over time
You guys are great. I’m a 30 year TOOL & RATM fan and appreciate watching others begin their journey into their respective discographies. Please keep at it. Love your analysis.
Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned is a must. You guys would love it. Ticks and Leaches is another great one, especially with how much you guys love drums. I used to always run to this song.
Maynard is usually in the back of the mix, done on purpose. He says his voice is just another instrument thus should be in the mix with the guitars, bass etc. Even live he stands at the back of the stage beside the drums usually Oh the synth sound is the Bass going through a Pitch shifter I think. It's intended to give a spiraling feeling
Wouldn’t say it’s intended to give a spiralling feeling, much more of a pulsation to me. Then the repetition of the ending with the pinch harmonics is symbolic of someone trying to break through whatever’s holding them back from “spiraling out” or reaching enlightenment in some form.
The part at the end where he points to the ceiling is one of my favorite parts of any tool song ever. It's your second time through that final drive and they pull Maynard's vocals way down to the gut of the mix and you feel as though you're being swallowed alive in the sound with him. It's one of the best production decisions ever. You literally get swallowed whole
Bro I’ve seen Tool live 6x and have a ticket to see them again in March in Michigan.. I’ve been listening to them since I was a teenager and literally skipped school on the release day of Lateralus.. love this video and can say they really are on the upper echelon of music, like I literally cannot think of a bad Tool song, not that they’re all great but not a single “bad song” Guys, seeing them live is NEXT LEVEL, they are like the Pink Floyd of our generation in that respect, second to non. They are about 60years old also FYI. And are legitimately possibly the greatest of all time
Vocals are background cause Maynard doesn't want to be seen as a front man. He's more comfortable with they band leading the song. This song is math 100% through and through. I can't do the explanation any justice but there's tons of info out on it. Fibonacci sequence. Time signature changes and lyrics all follow a numerical theme.
Math and rhythm are very correlated. I’m not sure it was too planned out according to the most bizarre equations they could fit, just felt right I argue.
Vocals on top don’t suit music like this. I get into this argument with my band all the time. In heavy music, or dense music, vocals should not be on top, they should sit in the mix with everything.
The more you listen to a Tool song it just gets better and better. The newest album has a song called Descending that starts slow but when it ends you come out of a trance.
I have watched you guys for a while and the way that breakdown at the end, even when you rewound it, affects the mood of the whole video always makes me come back to this reaction. You guys are straight class.
It is great to see new Tool fans. We listened to Tool during American Football weight training workouts, way back in the late 90’s. Great content guys.
You've felt the power of the music, no doubt. Now read the lyrics, ponder them, and try to get a good understanding of the message. Then, go back and listen again while you follow along with the lyrics. As the music carries you away, the lyrics will hit you with incredible emotional force. Goosebumps. Maybe even tears. Tool is something special.
to this day i still get chills hearing this song. And in person its a movement. I dont know where you all are based but Tool is going on tour again and i cant stress enough that you need to see them in person if they get near you.
As a drummer.. I felt the same way bruv. With almost all of their songs. Their composition, the energy and dynamics. The beauty and vision of it all. We love seeing others go on this ride.
Trust me the more you listen to it the better it gets, you keep picking up new things blowing your mind even more, i've listened to this song 100s of times, and i still hear new things.
This was my first Tool song I ever heard and I was in LOVE. One of their best songs, keep playing more Tool and won't hurt to throw in some AC/DC maybe a little Back In Black, Thunderstruck, Hells Bells, Highway to Hell, Shoot to Thrill, Dirty Deeds basically like Tool any AC/DC song works. Have an AWESOME day guys.
Tool is my favorite band in concert. After my first time seeing them I had to see them again. This song you can close your eyes an feel almost every instrument. Just melt into the grove and spiral out ,as said near the end of the song. I've seen them 3 times and will see them next summer ,if they tour again before Maynard harvests his vineyard. If you haven't heard it listen to Tool Aenima
1) You guys won a new subscriber. Great reaction, I appreciate the honesty. 2) Props on your technical evaluation, it's nice to hear someone that knows what they are talking about. 3) That all said - LLOOOOOVVVEEE the moment you pushed aside your mic, "gave in", and said, F it, I'm just gonna let them take me where they want. Cause they earned it. Good on both of you. Enjoy the ride
The thing i love about TOOL is that you are never sure where they are going next, you think you know but they surprise you. That's what makes them so interesting to listen too.
Good evening from Cornwall! I'm loving your reactions (I only just discovered you today). What you need to know about Tool is they want their work (it's much more than just 'music') to be a tool which will help us evolve mentally and spiritually. The lyrics often have multiple meanings, which are often puerile or uncomfortable at first look, but have deeper levels which should work subliminally, like neuro-linguistic programming or CBT therapy. Many times, the different instruments are playing completely different time signatures which roll and flow around each other before coming together, when they all play in unison, which just makes things explode! This song has a few meanings, but is held together by the fibbonacci sequence, a mathematical sequence of numbers, also called the golden ratio, where two numbers added together results in the third, which they use with the syllables in the lyrics here. Tool are deeper than the Mariana trench. You'll LOVE the rhythms in Jambi.
hmm I kind of think lyrics are not that important in of itself , in that I think you could adore the band for an entire lifetime, not understand a single word and it would still be a great listening experience. They are a cherry on top to me (I think some of MJK's lyrics are phenomenal, I also think some are kind of lame, Lateralus has good lyrics FTR,of course subjectives)
52 yr old woman from the states, HUGE Tool fan..got to see them for my 46th birthday. Left the show before it was over... because..I was utterly fulfilled. It was an awesome experience!! And I LOVE you two!! Your dissecting the music is perfect!! Now..Right In Two! Listen to it!!
I’m loving watching you struggle to articulate what you’re experiencing. Tool is musically unlike anything else that has ever existed. I’m happy you have taken on this journey. Your soul thanks you.
I absolutely watch until the end! Y'all always have great insight and we enjoy hearing it! Seeing Tool live is absolutely a religious experience - you hit the nail on the head. Loving the Tool reactions!
The single most important ingredient to most TOOL songs and it’s something that unfortunately a lot of song reviewers and/or reactors miss is the deep emotional message the lyrics are expressing. Maynard hears the music first then drops the lyrics into the song and matches the lyrics and his vocals to the music as if he was the 4th instrument in the band. Trust me there songs where Maynard destroys the mic but it has to be within the structure and feel of the music and the lyrics he created. Also this song is structured and performed to follow the mathematical structure of the Fibonacci Sequence, which is why it felt like it started from the bottom and worked its way to top which was the end of the song. There is always a purpose to how TOOL create their songs, those who get it and have the mental capacity to understand the songs including the lyrics which explain the tones and rhythms of the music love the band and appreciate the out of this world talent these muthufickas have. Appreciate this band my nigglettes cuz there won’t be another band like this. Al Rato and god bless 🙏🏾
I am truly thankful for a platform were I can watch a first reaction to song like this. Waiting to see your reaction and anticipating your reaction is fun for sure.
Tool is one of my favorite band to drive with the windows down and the music turned up loud. Just pure joy. Driving around with this blasting. Different bands have a different place. Deftones are good for traffic. Metallica for doing donuts in the snow.
TOOLS albums are 💯 percent TOP SHELF. ENGINEERING, ARTWORK with 3D GLASSES, HIDDEN TRACKS, INTERLUDES, BACKWARD MESSAGES, MIND BLOWING LYRICS, ODD TIME SIGNATURES!!! Who does that. TOOL DOES THAT. ✌
I always enjoy a great mix, close your eyes and your sitting in front of the band in the sweet spot. Ran live sound for bands for a long time and always wanted people to hear the same sound that I craved.
More than 20 years ago, I skipped class to wait for the record store to open so I could buy this album on the day it was released. The first time I heard the end of this song I said the exact same thing: "I got goosebumps."
Your passion for the music is awesome. Love how you guys truly appreciate the music. Thank you. It's so refreshing to have people with so much love for music
In pop music the vocals are on top because that's what they're selling, and the music is usually non existent, but both the music and vocals are integral to Tool so they're mixed together especially on this album. People recommend looking at the lyrics, don't do it on your first listen unless you really want to, feel it first, figure out the meaning later.
The last level @15:46 is the drummer Danny hitting a Paiste 40" Symphonic Gong. When it's played live all you can hear is static for 5 seconds as the song fades back in.
I feel like if you knew what this song actually is it would blow your mind even more. The entire song is written around the fibonacci sequence.. from the amount of syllables per line down to the written music. Its amazingly intricate
15:03 I love this bass effect and technique that Chancellor is executing here, best feeling part of the song. When it came up, I was wondering what his reaction was gonna be...started cracking up...pushes mic out of way, seems to just give up...only response to have really😆😆
I lost my shit the first time I heard this album back in 2001. The entire thing is absolutely mind blowing. Changed my life. It's a spiritual experience, I can feel my soul blooming out of the top of my head reaching for connection.
Watching these two dudes react to my favorite tool song, I got goosebumps from watching them react. Incredible. It reinforces for me that this song is alchemical Magic. They have never and will never top this one. I subscribed and now want to send you guys a ton of music to react to! First time subscriber to literally anyone. Well vibed sirs.
What you said at the end about the live experience is right on the money. When I saw them play this they extended it out during the encore. With the laser lights and the smoke machines going it really did feel like a religious experience.
Maynard wants his Melodies to blend with the other harmonic elements of the music and doesn’t want his lyrics to be the main event. He says that the lyrics he writes are what the music makes HIM feel and he doesn’t want his experience of the music to color yours. The music is the main thing.
That last passage and final note is like "fatality...". Remember the beginning was an innocent walk in the park, and then you get hit by a meteorite. You are spot on about the Tool concert experience, everyone that is there is there to connect and experience the music together. Ive seen them 3 times. They just announced a huge 2022 tour! You guys should go! I promise its unlike any other concert you have been to.
In my case the more I listened to a Tool song, the more I end up appreciating it. Their music doesn’t depreciate with more listens. However, it will cause other music to pale in comparison. Also, watching reactions like these makes me feel like I’m listening again for the first time
I’d recommend the Grudge from the same album. That song is another masterpiece. Also pretty much every tool track has crazy drums and bass. They are very rhythmic.
You have so much left to enjoy and discover. I didn't like this song the first time. Now it's my favorite and gives me chills every time. Keeping digging. Every song is a masterpiece in its own right.
Part of Danny's genius is his restraint; he is extremely tasteful in his fills and uses them for maximum emotional impact. 23:05 Pneuma isn't my favorite either, and I've been OGT since 92, the first EP. Descending, Lateralus, 10,000 days, Right in Two are all better songs. Lastly, the lyrics are important because they tell you WHY a particular section gets more or less intense. The end of Lateralus is a moment of commitment to living life fully and embodied, and the whooom-whooom of the bass informs that lyrical passage.
it's the third reaction to lateralus I've seen in the afternoon. I've being listening Tool since 1997/8 It keeps growing. I still listen to Aenima and find something more I haven't listening before. Tool is not just a band, it is an experience.
i’m only 6 minutes in and already loving this. this is how i’ve listened to new Tool music since 93. i listen probably 4-5 times before i really start to process everything, and my first listen is always just sitting there, eyes closed, getting a feel for it. i try not to single anything out and just get… kind of a big picture feeling. then i go back and listen for individual parts, lyrics, etc. but for me the most important thing about their music is how it makes me feel, so that’s where i start 🤷🏼♀️ if you ask 20 different Tool fans what the most important thing is, they’ll tell you 20 different things. there’s a lot of “you can’t possibly understand the music without the lyrics” and “it’s the structure of the song that’s vital” and this is more important than that, and you’re not listening right, and blah blah blah. what’s “most important” is that you listen to it how you want, and get what you want or need from it. who cares what the gatekeepers or snobs think? and yeah, there are a lot of those when it comes to Tool 🙄 they can be a bit… ugh, i won’t even go there. but yeah. try to ignore the elitists and just enjoy it 💜
Danny is so tasteful with his drumming. It takes a humble man with the best interest of the band at heart to reign himself in. He makes great creative decisions
Watching you get goosebumps gave me goosebumps. It reminded me of the first time I got to hear this song. Thank you for letting me relive that experience in this video.
19:55 yes!!! You’ll never get your first time listening back but you can watch other people discover TOOL for the first time and I swear it’s almost better than ones own first time. I really would suggest always having the lyrics, although there is no right or wrong way to indulge in TOOL it may help in the beginning of the journey so that y’all can focus on the music and textures 🤘🏼spiral out, keep going!
It’s nice to see musicians react…you listen like musicians, it’s refreshing. I can tell how you bob you’re head and how you feel it, and notate your comprehension in your expressive listening.

That’s the way most of their shows are too. Maynard is in back most times. I think he says he doesn’t like crowds much
came to comments to say this exact thing.
I think vocals way to often overshadow the music in most mainstream stuff. Which is part of why it ultimately all sounds the same.

When I first heard "Sober" I was like "yeh thats cool" , when I first heard AEnima album I thought "yeh its quite good" after another week I realised it was the best album I had heard, every album takes a while to grow on me, but they get better over time
Exactly
When it came out it blew me away and still does today
You guys are great. I’m a 30 year TOOL & RATM fan and appreciate watching others begin their journey into their respective discographies. Please keep at it. Love your analysis.
Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned is a must. You guys would love it.
Ticks and Leaches is another great one, especially with how much you guys love drums.
I used to always run to this song.
If you do this song, you must have the lyrics. It was a story told to the band, & they turned it into a Masterpiece!
You nailed it. These are the tracks I'm waiting to see my damn self, especially for the drummer of these two guys.
Whole 10k days album
Eulogy
This is my favourite song of all time, it's transcendent and seeing your reaction at the very end... makes me so happy!
This song still gives me chills after 20 years. Best listened to in the dark with your eyes closed 😉
Maynard is usually in the back of the mix, done on purpose. He says his voice is just another instrument thus should be in the mix with the guitars, bass etc. Even live he stands at the back of the stage beside the drums usually
Oh the synth sound is the Bass going through a Pitch shifter I think.
I’ve been listening to them since I was a teenager and literally skipped school on the release day of Lateralus.. love this video and can say they really are on the upper echelon of music, like I literally cannot think of a bad Tool song, not that they’re all great but not a single “bad song”
Guys, seeing them live is NEXT LEVEL, they are like the Pink Floyd of our generation in that respect, second to non. They are about 60years old also FYI. And are legitimately possibly the greatest of all time
you guys are killing it. amazing drum commentary
I get chills every single time at the ending buildup. I honestly feel like the high guitar notes at the end are to bring you back down to earth.
The more you listen to a Tool song it just gets better and better. The newest album has a song called Descending that starts slow but when it ends you come out of a trance.
My fav on the new album. Also Justin Chancellors fav.
It's an epic track indeed.
Tool, Isis and Cult of Luna are the best experiences out there! I listen to Tool since 20 years and it never gets old!
Producer and main engineer for Lateralus is David Bottrill, the list of artists he has produced is very impressive
Lyrics are definitely a must. They're the other half of the experience.
It levels it up.
hmm I kind of think lyrics are not that important in of itself , in that I think you could adore the band for an entire lifetime, not understand a single word and it would still be a great listening experience. They are a cherry on top to me (I think some of MJK's lyrics are phenomenal, I also think some are kind of lame, Lateralus has good lyrics FTR,of course subjectives)
Lyrics for a first time experience are definitely not a must. Takes away from the initial reaction and feeling
@@howya45 as someone who thinks the lyrics level up the song…I agree that listening the first time is better w out lyrics. I also dislike videos.
"I would love to hear the drummer eat it"
sounds like you need to listen to "The Grudge"
for the longest time The Grudge was my favorite. Now I tend to gravitate to Eulogy.
BEST ANALYSIS EVER! Seeing the drummer’s immersion and technical appreciation of the music and production is gratifying!!!
Every time...this song takes me to a new place that connects my spirit to the universe. Love your reaction guys. Much love
I’m loving watching you struggle to articulate what you’re experiencing. Tool is musically unlike anything else that has ever existed. I’m happy you have taken on this journey. Your soul thanks you.
"I got goosebumps"... Tool has induced more goosebumps than any other band I've ever listened to.
I got it again just listening to this song on my headphones and seeing the guys get blown away at the end.
Try Opeth. Different kind of music. Goosebumps nonetheless.
“Close your eyes.” Truer words can’t be said about listening to a Tool song.
Well vibed sirs.
the scary thing about TOOL is they are A+ on every single level, Ace on vocals ace on drums production guitar bass all of it is perfection
You brought joy to this old metalhead folks. So nice to see you enjoy it so much and kudos to your understanding of music!!!!
What you said at the end about the live experience is right on the money. When I saw them play this they extended it out during the encore. With the laser lights and the smoke machines going it really did feel like a religious experience.
I saw them 3 times after 10,000 days. Wings for Marie was like that.
I found your channel last week for Pnuena, I subscribed today
I've been a Tool fan since 92 and watching the two of you get it is awesome
Maynard wants his Melodies to blend with the other harmonic elements of the music and doesn’t want his lyrics to be the main event. He says that the lyrics he writes are what the music makes HIM feel and he doesn’t want his experience of the music to color yours. The music is the main thing.
That’s what I love about the way these guy react. They are truly feeling every bit of it. 🤘🏼💜
That part where they took it to gear 6 was a gong. It was the final layer. Massive sound stage in the climax
The gong hits in here and on DESCENDING are life altering.
I am watching them live at Prague in May. Can't wait!
In my case the more I listened to a Tool song, the more I end up appreciating it. Their music doesn’t depreciate with more listens. However, it will cause other music to pale in comparison. Also, watching reactions like these makes me feel like I’m listening again for the first time
One of my fav reactions ever. Was informative, educational, and seriously well done. Please keep going!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The lyrics are just as amazing as the music itself. They. Are. A. Must. Period.
Yall should give JAMBI a listen. Top 3 TOOL songs for me personally. Saw them play it live and it was an audio and visual experience.
I’d recommend the Grudge from the same album. That song is another masterpiece. Also pretty much every tool track has crazy drums and bass. They are very rhythmic.
The song is written in Fibonacci sequence
I think 46&2 is what you’re looking for when you talk about Danny eating it up. The drum solo in that song is pretty legendary I think
Yes!!!
You have so much left to enjoy and discover. I didn't like this song the first time. Now it's my favorite and gives me chills every time.
Keeping digging. Every song is a masterpiece in its own right.
I feel healed whenever I need spiritual uplifting and I play this album.
I get the chills every time I listen & I'm grateful for you guys, your appreciation, consideration and views/reactions of TOOL 🤝🙏🧘♂️
Holy shit! You're the guy!!!
it's the third reaction to lateralus I've seen in the afternoon. I've being listening Tool since 1997/8 It keeps growing. I still listen to Aenima and find something more I haven't listening before. Tool is not just a band, it is an experience.
i’m only 6 minutes in and already loving this. this is how i’ve listened to new Tool music since 93. i listen probably 4-5 times before i really start to process everything, and my first listen is always just sitting there, eyes closed, getting a feel for it. i try not to single anything out and just get… kind of a big picture feeling. then i go back and listen for individual parts, lyrics, etc. but for me the most important thing about their music is how it makes me feel, so that’s where i start 🤷🏼♀️
if you ask 20 different Tool fans what the most important thing is, they’ll tell you 20 different things. there’s a lot of “you can’t possibly understand the music without the lyrics” and “it’s the structure of the song that’s vital” and this is more important than that, and you’re not listening right, and blah blah blah. what’s “most important” is that you listen to it how you want, and get what you want or need from it. who cares what the gatekeepers or snobs think? and yeah, there are a lot of those when it comes to Tool 🙄 they can be a bit… ugh, i won’t even go there. but yeah. try to ignore the elitists and just enjoy it 💜
Danny is so tasteful with his drumming. It takes a humble man with the best interest of the band at heart to reign himself in. He makes great creative decisions
this track is built and written around Fibonacci numbers/sequence.....this band are on another level to 99.999% shit out there
I first found “The Pot” and it made me love that song, but then I found “Lateralus” and it made me love tool
If you want to see Danny Go god mode, try ticks and leaches, Rosetta stoned or schism.
I really would suggest always having the lyrics, although there is no right or wrong way to indulge in TOOL it may help in the beginning of the journey so that y’all can focus on the music and textures 🤘🏼spiral out, keep going!
very true
It’s nice to see musicians react…you listen like musicians, it’s refreshing. I can tell how you bob you’re head and how you feel it, and notate your comprehension in your expressive listening.
You guys should definitely either check out Lost Keys+Rosetta Stoned, 46 & 2, or Ticks and Leeches next. All 3 are absolute masterpieces.
I second 46 & 2
