This is always one of my favorites for people discovering TOOL. The entire premise of the song is expanding your mind and immersing yourself in new experiences. You listening to this for the first time is literally the embodiment of the song itself. Keep it up bro.

That and it's amazing how many references to other things there are embedded in the lyrics of this song. For example, when Maynard says "Feed my Will" he in many way means "Will" in the same way Aleister Crowley defines "Will" as your "True Self."

Maynard James Keenan’s vocals during the first few minutes of Lateralus form a Fibonacci sequence. The number of syllables progress to the sixth step, then back down to the first step; up to the seventh step, and then back to the fourth step:
    [1] black[1] then
    [2] white are
    [3] all I see
    [5] in my infancy
[8] red and yellow then came to be
    [5] reaching out to me
    [3] lets me see
    [2] there is
    [1] so
    [1] much
    [2] more and
    [3] beckons me
[5] to look through to these
    [8] infinite possibilities
[13] as below so above and beyond I imagine
[8] drawn outside the lines of reason
    [5] push the envelope
    [3] watch it bend
The Fibonacci sequence shares a relationship with Phi, the golden ratio. The golden ratio is used to describe spirals, which are mentioned several times in the lyrics:
“Swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be human”, “Spiral out, keep going” twice, and “Spiral out, keep going.” five times. Also, Keenan first begins singing 1 minute and 37 seconds into the song, which equates to 1.617 minutes (the golden ratio = approximately 1.618).
The time signatures of the chorus change from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8, symbolizing a spiral. In addition, the number 987 is part of the Fibonacci sequence.

Btw its not just the lyrics. Nearly every mathematical measure bout the instruments is compatible with the fibonacci sequence as well. In really complex ways to the point where i wanna make a joke about divine intervention but it wouldnt really be a joke. NOBODY MAKES MUSIC LIKE THIS!!! Its unfathomable how they made lyrics, atnosphere, sound and MATH come together full circle with the message and philosophy.

Every Tool album has a distinct sound and feeling man. Their earlier work was harder and as they aged they became more and more complex in their music. The one constant though is Maynard's voice and lyrical prowess. And with all the suggestions for Tool songs here in the comments, they are all GOOD. There is no bad Tool song.

    • @donrodztx
      @donrodztx 6 лет назад +5

Leon Russell I understand, but this man has more depth of thought. He understands how broad in perspective MJK's lyrics are without the details surrounding how their music is created. And put together, I think he'd get it, and love it. BTW... The guys make the music, before Maynard writes the lyrics, so these men are on a different playing field when it comes to their music and lyrics. That's why they are my favorite band ever.

I love your Tool reactions. You get it. They're just different. Hard to put your finger on it. Musically they find a way to take simple chord progression and twist it like a rubics cube in every different combination and package it all up into a masterpiece. And Maynard's lyrics are so infectious. From the writing to delivery. Actually I find that everything they play I've somehow felt inside me at some point and then there it is, they shown a light on it, it's amazing! You got to check out Puscifer. Maynard's personal music project. His last album, Money Shot is unbelievable.

Bro it's awesome watching someone evolve into a Tool fan. I have been a fan of Tool since I first heard them in the early 90's. Saw them live for the first time in 1997 right after ÆNIMA came out. It was one of the best shows I have seen still to this day. I have seen them multiple times. The one show that stood out the most to me was Tool at Bonnaroo in 2007. I had some really good LSD that I had saved just for the occasion. One of the best nights of my life. I wish I could put into words what that show means to me. Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine came out and played with them toward the end of the show. Life changing experience to say the least.

You can listen to any Tool song over and over again and discover something sonically or philosophically new each time.

I absolutely love seeing someone's first time hearing a tool song...to fully understand, one must look to the meaning...this is a masterpiece at it's finest...Maynard said that the band is a "Tool" to understanding the universe...

The drums around the 10:30 is just an impossible pattern that only Danny Carey can do.

Josh Moore I agree. I've attempted to play it on drums and failed quicker than my drug test

Its quite simple actually. Once you realize the snare always follows the 2nd opening of the hi hat it's simple to learn. Plus its just a one measure pattern in 5. The snare is always on 4. probably the easiest part of the song for the drums actually. The only difficultly is that the Bass and Guitar are playing in different meters so in a live setting you would have to focus on your rhythm and mostly ignore the others.

As much as I love Danny Carey, there are people who can learn to play anything with enough practice. However those same people can't create the brilliance like this to begin with. There a vid of a fucking 11 year old who basically nails Ticks and Leeches, for example.

As a few others have mentioned, you should check out the Fibonacci sequence explanation for this song. It's pretty incredible.

The part where you said "This song was 9 mins long, but I don't feel like I sat here for 9 minutes" is the exact thing all the people who like this music have come to understand. Welcome to the ride!

My dude. I really love that you actually appreciate tool. I see so many hip hop enthusiasts reacting to tool and they just act hype and they dont really have any thing to say about it or react to any of the instrumentals. Welcome to the family my friend. Spiral out. keep going.

I've seen Tool live 10 times. For what its worth the only song they have played all 10 times is Stinkfist. I'd would like to see you review Tool - jimmy or Hooker With a Penis next.
By the way, you have me singing "Don DeMarco" all day at the show room in the dealership i work for. Or saying finish him, when i go out to close a deal.

Most reaction channels when they react to songs the video is 3x longer than the song because they keep pausing it and talking about it. But you replay the song 10x 😂 keep up the great work man.

Hey man I’m loving your reactions keep em going pls!! Lyric videos are cool on Tool because of the crazy amount of thought that Maynard puts in every word but this way you miss a lot of the amazing things they do with the instruments. For example my favorite part is after the solo when they start playing in diferent rythms within the guitar, bass and drums to unsync and create tension only to be liberated at a single beat were they all sync in to start the process again. That I find genious!! Hope you take a listen to that and keep growing and getting more reactions out there!! Cheers from Spain!

True words my man, it’s like you say “you gotta respect that shit” so much thought goes into each song they produce, and crazy that this piece is based off of the Fibonacci sequence. Just watch them live for the first time recently and their stage presence demands a whole other world of respect for what Tool do. Thanks for showing you love to such a band
