I read this comment and thought "Yea, he's right." ...and then I remembered the transition in Jambi. Now I'm trying to make a Top 5 Greatest Tool Transitions list.
Yeah. I followed so many RUclipsrs on this journey and it never gets old. And each one has a different perspective too. That's why TOOL is beyond just music and is full-on ART
Ok. I'm only 50 seconds into the video for the first time. I'm guessing there's going to be a HUGE smile on Lex's face when it switches from Parabol to Parabola.
I’ve always looked at this song as a reminder that this life and everything that comes with it is temporary. Yes, pain is an illusion, but it’s still “real” at the moment. But it’s a reminder during the event that this is temporary. So hold on, get through it, so you can come out the other side. This is probably my favorite from Tool.
Yep. Pain is an indicator of damage to the body. Since the body is NOT who we are, it's not as dire as we are programmed to interpret it. Psychological pain, while more "real" than physical pain, is still an illusion, distracting us from the fleeting but holy experience of being alive. And breathing.
This song raises more questions than it answers. Why are we here in these bodies? Why should we “hold on” to this reality? What if I don’t like being here? If we are eternal, shouldn’t I just commit suicide and hope that the next phase of existence is better? Etc. Still my favorite Tool song.
@@kdog909 we have to experience this holy reality. We have to remember that there is an after so we need to not focus on the negative that you are feeling so as to not get stuck in the pain and can continue with the journey.
Hell yeahhh!!! do a lateralus lyric video next ;) "This whole album deals with spiritual enlightenment(with the climax at the end of Reflection). Parabola specifically deals with the illusory nature of the self. "We barely remember who or what came before" -> Our memories are very limited, but they create a story of our "selves" despite that. It's just an illusion, the song tells us to focus on the now(a common theme in spirituality) and that our bodies are just a temporary form of being. The other songs on Lateralus all focus on different aspects of the main spiritual truth that Reflection tries to convey. The Grudge/Schism are about our relationships with other beings and how futile it is to separate ourselves from them. We are, after all, all one mind. The Patient/Ticks and Leeches are about dealing with the struggles that come along the path to spritual enlightenment. The incredible amount of patience it requires, the negative influences from the outside world, etc. Lateralus is about the exploration of ourselves and just the general size and scope of what there is to discover. Many people call Tool hard to understand, but they actually convey very simple messages in their music. That's part of what makes them so great, their universal applicability to almost all situations.
I agree. i've been learning about this lately. we are one. the illusion goes beyond pain though. everything we experience is an illusion. this reality is just a projection of the higher consciousness. sort of like film onto a screen.
@@tristantknight I'm not sure if the correct word is "illusion." We are definitely perceiving our reality, such as it is. However, I believe that what we consider to be sacred and most important (our life as a living creature on earth, etc.) is exaggerated when viewed in the greater perspective of our true existence as a shared consciousness. This is just as brief station on our grand journey, and is practically meaningless in the grand scheme of things. I also believe that we dip into and out of this earthly existence many times, over and over again. Some have referred to this as Reincarnation, though it may be a continual process that our shared consciousness engages in over eons.
About Disease? Never heard that one before. I don't see it, but the beauty of many of Maynard's lyrics is that they can be interpreted in so many different ways. There is rarely a consensus of opinion amongst #TheToolArmy
You should do Tool "Wings for Marie" part 1 & 2 next! Listen to them together! They are about the lead singer Maynard's mother who was left paralyzed due to an illness when he was 11. It is off the album 10,000 days which refers to the rough amount of time that his mother was paralyzed before she passed away. Very emotional song!
My grandma died recently, and she suffered from dementia for about 15 years before she died. She was a super dedicated Christian before she lost herself to the disease and wings for marie hit me hard on release, and it hit me hard when she died.
The discussions here are so fascinating and interesting, I can tell you guys are really absorbing the lyrics and trying to apply it to your own life as well as others. This song honestly makes me tear up a bit, it means so much to me at this point in my life. Keep rocking!
Life with health in the moment is a gift and Maynard learned this by watching his mom physically suffer. In the context of eternity, this physical existence as all but a small moment. This is why listening to Wings for Marie Pt. 1 and Pt. 2 are a must.
Yo, sister girl gets it. You can take Tool's lyrics and find a whole lot of meanings & references. It's awesome watching her deep the song & come up with her own theory's & head bang to the track. great reaction guys! Love from Australia!!!
100%. My bf is a movie lover. I'm a music fanatic. He likes music too though and we have a lot of similar tastes. He is familiar with Tool but never GOTTEN THERE. I plan to change that.
Yes, so glad you did this Lyric Video, Parabol/Parabola has always been my absolute favorite Tool song. I don’t necessarily think the Song is specifically about Cancer, but Tool always intends their songs be interpreted in whatever way the listen feels works for them.
This video gave me so much joy. I am a Buddhist at heart and you guys are ONTO something here. Stay on this train of thought. I think you may have just made me a Tool fan, as well. So.....thanks!
i feel like she is growing the most through these rock music in every video. From the first reaction to the recent ones, she continuingly grows with the music of rock and reflects on it more than he will ever feel....
I just wanted to point out that what Brad is describing when he "went through a portal" during his transition from waking state to dreaming state is an actual phenomenon established by sleep science! It is known as the hypnagogic state and it is the moment when awareness of the physical body and environment starts to give way to the imagery and sensations being generated in the brain when you are dreaming. Experienced lucid dreamers actually use this as part of a technique in which they hold onto their consciousness as the body falls asleep so that they can directly transition straight into a lucid dreaming state. Very cool to hear you inadvertently experienced this for yourself! Great reaction video by the way, I love to see the deep philosophical conversations that Tool's music encourages!!
I believe he's talking about the simple experience of being alive. "We chose to be here. right now... stay inside (this form)". "We are eternal" as in our spirits are eternal, and after this body passes we will keep on existing, and keep on coming back here to experience new things "in this holy reality/experience"
People who can’t even give a song an honest listen have no experience with music. All genres have the ability to eargasm you you just haven’t dug deep enough
Every time I hear this song, I feel electricity running through my body. I cannot explain it any other way. When I watch people feel this track for the first time, I enjoy seeing their level of connection and the thoughts the songs provokes in the listeners.
It is not about "telling it" to someone else (in pain or otherwise). It is about the realization within. It's a revelation, not a statement. It is a discovery, not a lesson.
For what it’s worth, Tool Army at this time will only be accepting baby girl’s application into the club. My man doesn’t get it yet...she does. And that’s okay, but it’s fascinating to watch. When she said, “I feel like I just blasted into hyperspace” and he goes, “what do you meannnn?” THAT is the difference. You’ll get there bro, just open your mind a little bit more. Dope reaction.
She nailed it. It's not about what you tell someone, it's about what you realize for yourself. This song slowly and subtly builds up over time until it rises up and smashes you in the face with it. Great video.
Love the metaphysical talk during and after my favorite Tool song. Both of you shared valid memories related to this amazing song. All Tool songs are only relevant to what the listener chooses to hear.
The pain he is referring to is the mental pain of living in this world. That our souls are eternal, and I effected by that pain. To the soul, it is an illusion or a construct of the body that is simply holding him at this moment.
Pain is a signal sent to your brain from the area in question. So if you teach yourself that you are not the body but it is a vehicle to travel through this reality then you can in theory ignore that, kind of like you ignore the service engine soon light in your car. But it's hard to do. Like ignoring the seat belt alarm lol.
Love to have seen Lex jump and go into hyperspace at the drop. Great interpretation of the song, like people say it is what you take from it. Im the person with cancer that brought this up, what it means to me is "this body holding me is holding my soul" Cancer is very painful so when it says we live eternal (our soul) pain is a illusion. How i look at this song. Great reaction
I've never heard it being about cancer. For the lady that commented that she has cancer, that is exactly what it means. That's the brilliance of Maynard's lyrics he intentionally writes his songs to be interpreted by the listener. Hence the name; TOOL
Dang I love your reactions. Brad you were so philosophical with 46 & 2, what happened ? Lex you're on the right track. You guys missed the ending, zooming in the droplet of water; a microcosm of the universe. I believe the song is about spiritual pain (depression, loneliness, hopelessness etc). The past is pain and the future is fear. The solution is consciousness, meditation and being in the now. The secret is staying in the present. We are not our thoughts, we are not the body that holds us. We are the energy that emanates from the soul or spirit, the body is just holding that spirit. To be grateful, to be in the moment. We are eternal. Reminds me of what Eckhart Tolle writes about.
I shared this song with my mom before she passed from ovarian cancer back in 2020 and after listening, she just had a big, beautiful smile on her face.
"This body Makes me feel Eternal All this pain is an illusion." There's a spiritual concept in the Adviata school Vedanta Hinduism called the Māyā. Lots of interpretations of what the Māyā is and what it represents, but almost all refer to it as the magic power with which a god can make human beings believe in what turns out to be an illusion and all the pain and suffering of our mortal lives is nothing more than this illusion. This song is so heavy on spirituality and the concepts of reincarnation that I can't help but think about that when I hear it. Awesome reaction. Thanks for sharing it.
Spiritually and reincarnation are what I’ve always thought this song is about. It’s like he’s pointing out that this time before we go into the bardo is precious, but takes comfort in knowing it’s a cycle.
We chose to live in the first place. My grandpas last words. So eerie. I’ve always felt like this life is real, but fake in the sense of where and what we are before before we chose to come here. We create our pain because we need it, but not in a sadistic or masochistic way, but in a metaphysical desire to feel what’s originally foreign.
Awesome reaction guys! Relatively new subscriber here. But, I have to say that although you both do excellent work, Lex's reactions are what mostly keep me glued...love her facial expressions when a beat drops! Not to mention that she almost left her seat...maybe to hyperspace! I'm engrossed in the reality that you two project; it keeps me smiling. I'm so wide eyed and hopeful for your next music reaction! Thanks!
Oh my God, my heart literally split in half when the dude stopped it from parabol to parabola. One of the best transitions EVER, everybody knows that if parabol comes on, you make sure your music player is not on shuffle. Also chicky seems to dig Tool way more. Her reaction is much more similar to what mine was when I was getting into Tool. All in all, I'm glad they're discovering great music, also saw their video where they had no clue who George Michael was, and never heard of Freedom 90'. That is actually mind blowing to me.There is another song called Freedom by George when he was in Wham btw. Good on you though! There is so much great music out there. Keep up the good work!
For me, this song is about being present in the moment. Barely remember what came before, choosing to be here, right now. And yes, seeing them live is an amazing experience that will grow your appreciation for them immensely. They are masters of song and performance. Hopefully they will get out on tour again soon so you can get to see them.
Man tool is just the best band that has ever been,EVERY guitar riff is so atmospheric,EVERY drum beat is grounding,EVERY bass riff brings it all together and then EVERY lyric brings you to the point of mitosis!! Man I love this band and am so fortunate to have been able to get to experience them!! THANK YOU TOOL!
I've always thought that "This pain is an illusion" is in reference to how our lives are just a blip when compared to eternity. Pain is temporary. IDK, I'm just a dumbass. I can't wait to see more TOOL reactions, few suggestions for you, The Grudge, Invincible, Intension/Right in Two.
Yeah, pain is physical, of the flesh. It is of the finite. We get lost living life in this physical, finite, limited understanding, forgetting that this is just temporary. Just a blip on the radar of the INFINITE. The TRUE reality. The realm of the spirit, the divine. The much bigger picture.
I am so happy you started doing Tool, I think they are right up your alley, since you have (in my opinion) great conversations and thoughtful insights to the music, lyrics and content you do! Great reaction! Looking forward to more, one thing that might blow your mind would be to do "Tool - Lateralus" and follow it with the video "How Tool Used Math to Create "Lateralus"", that would be such a fun backtoback reaction! Edit: Btw I think it is great how you embrace your differences in your way of thinking, don't ever devalue that! It creates such an important forum for discussion and debate!
You guys just demonstrated how I fell in love with tool. Sharing deep thoughts tqrying to interpret their music =) In a big way tool shaped my personality made me more respectful and kind. This band is hard for people to like right away but everyone I know who gave them an honest try become true tool fans. Awesome reaction video!
Watching you both listen and discuss Tool is addictive! Keep doing it please 🙏🏼. Would love for you to react to "Descending" by them, but any Tool will do. Cheers!
Wow Lex. Your instinct and intuition are advanced and impressive. Even the fact you said like entering hyperspace. And true. Reality is the biggest illusion we all share. The collective dream. I love you young lady
One of the best reaction videos ever! Lex is what happens inside when I hear Tool, Brad is my external expression of that experience. Emotions never exit, just reverberate lol
One of my favs. Never associated it with cancer or disease tho. More like life and the celebration of it while we are here, IMO. Perspectives, I suppose.
I don't usually enjoy long discussions, but yours are definitely interesting and worthwhile. On another note though, I think you really missed out not watching the official video. Perhaps you could view it for yourselves behind the scenes. Personally, I think it makes a difference. Enjoy your channel. 👍❤
This is an incredibly powerful song in regards to one's spirituality and journey. Pain is an illusion. Ever notice how you become stronger when you overcome pain? It's no coincidence that Maynard's own spiritual journey is portrayed here. The entire album is about a journey in spirituality. You gotta hear the whole album and watch the official video to this song when the person realizes his connection to the universe and then reconnects. The symbolism is absolutely beautiful and awe-inspiring.
Great reaction and analysis! 'Pain is an illusion' is a difficult philosophical concept to wrap one's head around. Pain is a concept/label describing a subjective experience. The sensation itself is not 'pain'. Pain is just a word/label we use to describe an experience. The perception and labeling of the raw sensation as pain creates 'pain'. One of the consequences of meditation can be the realization of the nature of pain as being a subjective interpretation of the actual phenomena, or as some people describe it, an illusion of the mind.
Don't forget to take into account the title of the song. The ups and downs of the music are very much related to the title. Thanks for the reaction as always!
Honestly, I’ve never heard that take about disease. I don’t see it that way, but these songs are meant to be taken in the context of the listener. For me, it’s about the choice of being me in my moment and understanding that my current form is temporary and will change in the next moment.
I like that interpretation because I can relate. My interpretations have included : ptsd (multiple traumatic events), loss of loved ones, love loss, that Enormous Stripped Bass that got away... and many more.
"This body holding me, all this pain is an illusion. I think they may have related it to disease in that the body grows, and breaks down. Disease, wear and tear, is always prevalent, but we all experience it differently. I always interpreted the song as though it was about live with what you have, and give your best to live as good as you can, and push through. But i can understand the other ways people see it.
That riff/groove that starts at 12:07 in the video is, to me, one of the most epic, pure, and amazing rock grooves ever recorded. Loved Lex's face scrunch up at that exact moment - she knows what I'm talking about!

Y'all are my new favorite reaction/analyze channel. Lex you are a true metalhead! I can see it in how you feel the music 🤘
Absolutely love Lex's reaction to this one.. Tool delve deep into the soul, it either hits you because you feel the message, or it doesn't....
The pain he is referring to is the mental pain of living in this world. That our souls are eternal, and I effected by that pain. To the soul, it is an illusion or a construct of the body that is simply holding him at this moment.
I know when the beats gonna drop but always love watching lex react to it. And I always jam and head bang right along with her. It's great!!
My first tool concert in 2006 was a life-changing experience!
Yeah that 10,000 Days tour was so good.
This podcast is a perfect representation of Yin & Yang in human form; Brad is a practical realist and Lex is a very ethereal, existential thinker.
"This body
Makes me feel
Eternal
All this pain is an illusion."
There's a spiritual concept in the Adviata school Vedanta Hinduism called the Māyā.
Always love the conversations over Tool songs. Right in Two will make you talk for days.
RIGHT IN TWO- tool
Do it up! It’s amazing
Thanks!
You guys are such a great couple. You mix the intellectual with the emotional almost perfectly. I can see why you are together.
And yes you need to see them live.
In the time of suffering, remember that life is the holy gift and be glad to be alive and breathing in this holy reality and holy experience
For me, this song is about being present in the moment. Barely remember what came before, choosing to be here, right now.
And yes, seeing them live is an amazing experience that will grow your appreciation for them immensely. They are masters of song and performance. Hopefully they will get out on tour again soon so you can get to see them.
This song is definitely about crossing over into the psychedelic realm. This whole album is a spaceship, designed to carry you through the vail.
No that’s pretty spot on IMO
Definitely. I agree. Pain is an illusion because it’s related to your earthly experience. The body dies but we live on, eternal
SO many Tool songs are a literal trip. He lulls you with the chanting softness at the beginning then the beat drops. Hard! So cool.
Lexi gets it and her reactions to the music are perfect!
We are all eternal because energy only changes form
This is my favorite Tool song of all time. And chime in fellow listeners, that guitar solo is straight out of Eddie Van Halen's toolbox.
All I do at work is watch Tool reactions. Makes my soul happy 😊
How?
We're just energy. Energy never dies.
You have the most interesting discussions and insights.
This is an amazing song. Very thought provoking.
"Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind"
(Brad)
Don't forget to take into account the title of the song. The ups and downs of the music are very much related to the title. Thanks for the reaction as always!
I feel like Lex is always spot on with the lyrics. I love how much she gets into it.
@@jasonwonderinthelight8098 I have a feeling this comment will go extremely underrated lol.
I think the context is about Maynards mom having a stroke and being paralyzed. Not exactly disease but I get the comparison?
"This body holding me, all this pain is an illusion.
I think they may have related it to disease in that the body grows, and breaks down. Disease, wear and tear, is always prevalent, but we all experience it differently.
I always interpreted the song as though it was about live with what you have, and give your best to live as good as you can, and push through. But i can understand the other ways people see it.
That riff/groove that starts at 12:07 in the video is, to me, one of the most epic, pure, and amazing rock grooves ever recorded. Loved Lex's face scrunch up at that exact moment - she knows what I'm talking about!
Lex is so pretty 😍
You ain't wrong
Girl, I completely understood what you were saying and where you were coming from. Tool’s music is very atmospheric and open. Full of intensity and depth. You got it!
I suspect she will lose her mind on Vicarious.
This
I love you guys. I love that you are finding your own meaning to each Tool song.
