    I remember several years ago I was made redundant from my job, was unemployed for 7 months or so. As with the financial situation or should I say the lack of finances I had to buy the cheapest of food to make ends meet.
    Most if not all the food was the value, smart price, essential labelled food, such as rice, pasta, bread to name but a few. When money is tight it's surprising how we can adapt to situations very quickly, despite eating cheaper food I have and will always be grateful for having food to eat in those tough times.
    Even had an old slow cooker, never used it until I was unemployed, would buy the cheapest of frozen minced beef, add mixed frozen vegetables and potatoes and a gravy mix, I would freeze the food into smaller containers, to which these meals would last me 4 to 5 days, surprisingly I was always full when eating the minced beef and veg with bread to soak up the gravy.
    I'm now in a great job, however, from time to time I will purposely go out of my way to buy the cheap food items again, just to give myself a reality check on how things were bad at the time in the past, never to take things for granted. And finally, I always buy food for the local foodbanks, put the food into those foodbank trolleys that a lot of supermarkets have these days, cause one day I could be in that situation myself again, struggling to make ends meet.

      watching this makes me want to browse the low cost aisles again...the nostalgia of getting through those hard times has come flooding back. To be fair, the only difference between low cost and brand name food is mainly the cost of advertising. True some brands have their secret recipes and whatnot, but the primary ingredients are practically the same.

      I've just resigned in Feb. I'm on Universal Credit. Let's just say that money is tight. I'm in that exact situation. I can't even concentrate due to lack of food. Tomorrow is my pittance day and I'll be cutting into my rent to buy a huge shop. Never again will I be left with no food for an entire week. Before anyone says I can afford internet. Well, I need that to look for jobs and it is the only luxury I have. If I didn't have that I wouldn't be able to talk to friends and I'd be totally isolated. I'm not work shy, I worked for Worldpay for six years and prior to that, for Sky for four years. All without a gap in my employment.

    I've always loved these "week on" videos Mike, and wanted to share my idea for a shameless homage. I've got brain cancer, and have to take chemotherapy drugs for one week each month. During that week, my appetite and senses of smell and taste change drastically, and my diet has to adjust to cope, and I wanted to document how I deal with that through the week.
    It's not meant to be tasteless, or trivialize such a serious subject; I wouldn't monetize and the audience would be tiny. I just want to speak to my own experience in a way that's sincere, but not heavy--I try my best to add some gallows levity when writing about my new life, so it's not some slog or bummer.
    Just wanted to mention it's an idea I've had; I may never get the chance to pull it together, but wanted to at least mention it to you in a public forum while it's still just an idea--in case you're so repulsed by the idea that you'd beg me not to try it.

    The reason the dark chocolate tastes better or “chocolate-y” I believe is because there’s supposed to be a required minimum percentage of cocoa in anything dark chocolate, whereas milk chocolate can pretty much be 99.9% milk if they want it to be. Then again, I forget if this rule applies to only the US, UK, or both.

    • @paulgascoigne5343
      @paulgascoigne5343 6 лет назад +1

      Yes! Thank you.. the frozen mince is mostly water anyway when you see how much it reduces it's a false economy! I know it's not "smart price" but if your asda has a butcher's section then you can shave a few pence off the regular mince by getting it from there because you aren't paying for as much plastic - you just need to make sure you don't pierce it accidentally as the bags are quite thin.

    Saturated fat is just a type of fat that you should not have much of. That pasta was not 75% of your daily fat intake, but 75% of the "bad" fat you usually find in cheap food.
