This is actually based on a true story, about a married couple, medical personnel for the Army, who investigated the mass deaths of a colony of monkeys, only to discover that it was a new form of Ebola. Of course, it didn't jump species to us like in the movie, but that was the concern and why the Army got involved. I got to see them deliver a lecture at UNL, about the real-life process of hunting down emergent viruses.

COVID-19 is not the big problem.
The largest issue is SARS-CoV-2, mutating and becoming more deadly, or something.
      CoV are common viruses.
We have 2 of them that are always among us, without being acted against.
      The HCoV-299E and HCoV-OC43.
      Both HCoV ("H"uman "Co"rona "V"irus).
They cause a minor cold at most.
So in theory, she can take on trades from them and be more addapted for the human host, meaning she spread much quicker within the population
I mostly describe this as SARS-CoV-2 having parties with other CoV,
but I guess some might not even understand such simplistic way of telling it. ^.^"
Especially because for most, it's "the coronacirus' and don't even know the difference between MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2.,.

The virus did not mutate after infecting cedar creek. In the movie, they find patient zero, jimbo and the pet store owner, infected with the original strain, and the cedar creek airborne motaba to be too close on the tree of death (what they called their timeline of infection) for sudden spontaneous mutation and theorize the monkey was carrying both strains. Scene 53 minutes into the movie.

Fun fact--the movie Outbreak was released exactly twenty five years before today's real-life coronavirus outbreak. Its release date was March 10, 1995--the same day in 2020 that Italy went on nationwide lockdown. It's a little freaky.
