  • Greyscale is a disease featured in the Game of Thrones novels and television series developed by HBO. It essentially turns infected flesh to rot and become stiff, causing the skin to turn mottled black and grey.

    • @Darknimbus3
      @Darknimbus3 5 лет назад +7

      Highly doubt it’s a fungus. I believe much of the land vertebrates are too complex for an outright deadly fungus attack unless the body is immunodeficient. Also, no mention of fruiting spore-producing bodies are noted, which fungi have. You could make an argument for yeast, but even then it’s highly doubtful, for while there are pathogenic yeast out there, they really don’t have the virulence to take down a healthy strong vertebrate bigger than a mouse, and those that have usually have done so in a previously-sick or immunocompromised host as a secondary infection.
      About the unusual skin growth: That is difficult to determine, since pretty much any disease-causing agent or even stress can cause that to a degree.
      Out of the pathogenic agents, bacteria are the deadliest on average (and out of all common-denominator diseases like meningitis or pneumonia, which can be caused by the 3 main groups, bacteria prove to be the most dangerous). Viruses prove to be the most spreadable and perhaps virulent on average. However, fungi tend to be the most opportunistic of the three, and that is their strongpoint; which is why serious fungal diseases are far more often caused by a secondary or opportunistic infection.
      Bacteria, on average are more difficult to transmit than a virus, especially by direct contact, and many “contagious” bacteria are not easily spread by direct contact; rather they depend on either a vector or indirect fluid contact in order to spread. Viruses on average are much easier spread through direct contact, some viruses taking a mere touch of a person to spread. Fungi can be easily spread as well, though should it come across a healthy person with a healthy immune system and beneficial bacterial flora, the fungus would have little chance to flourish itself. Of course there are minor infections like Athlete’s Foot that can be scary-easy to spread, but that’s a different ball game due to the lack of seriousness in a usual Athlete’s Foot or similar infection.
      Another thing to note is that bacteria tend to come as micro-predators and would-be conquerors. They are even spiteful enough to release toxins to kill off surrounding cells so they can take over themselves, and that is what makes them so deadly. Viruses and much of the disease-causing fungi in large vertebrates, on the other hand, are merely parasitic and completely depend on the host for survival and reproduction. Perhaps that’s one reason why most virus and fungal infections are not (immediately) deadly, since if the host dies, so do they.
      It seems to me that greyscale is most likely a virus because of the virulence factor, the pace, the long life expectancy of the victim, and how easy it is to spread around. The disease is spread by mere contact, singling out bacteria, and the rapid pace of spreading and sheer virulence in a large vertebrate takes fungi out of the picture. As with the long life expectancy, while a few pathogenic bacteria can pull it off, like lyme disease, usually it’s the fungus or virus that pull this off, one way or another. In this case, it could be either, but this would be the only argument fungi would have, and even then with a disease as serious and spread out like this there would have to be some mycelium seen somewhere. Even this said, fungi pretty much loses out to the virus in much of the other factors. My thought is a virus

    If greyscale infects the internal organs as well as the skin, what good does it do to just remove the infected skin?
    Even if you did that, wouldn't it just return to the skin because the organs are infected as well?
    They treat greyscale on the show like some kind of leprosy here.

  • @UncleMikeDrop
    @UncleMikeDrop 6 лет назад +66

    In a lot of ways the grayscale plague looks a lot like a fungal infection of a very severe variety. Given that so many things in Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire are basically wrapped up fantasy versions of real-world things it's not impossible to imagine that would be an especially Insidious and contagious fungal infection. It would definitely be more reasonable to think that a topical cure would be possible for a fungus than it would be for a virus.

    I must admit watching much of the series before reading the books. I haven't finished either, but think what I have to look forward to. I thought the disease was called dragon scale, rather than gray scale. When poor, sweet Shireen met her end, I had this hope that she'd be protected from the flames by her affliction. This is probably an indication I have been reading too many soppy fantasy novels. Until now.

    Greyscale presents the way people were afraid leprosy affects the body way back when (and somewhat still today, it's a very misunderstood disease). I believe greyscale is an allegory for leprosy

    The show makes Greyscale seem really easy to cure. Just cut off the skin layer and put ointment on it.... Seems like there should be a mountain of cases with Greyscale being cured.

    Everyone says the disease is some sort of bacterial or viral infection, but I would say this disease is some form of advanced fungal infection. A fungal infection that could infect the epidermis than after fully spreading to the internal organs after covering the skin. The hardened skin is the fungal infection developed. But that is just my thought on it.

    If it’s as simple as cutting off the infected skin, why not just get on that fast? I’m sure Jorah cutting that small patch of grey scale would’ve hurt a lot less than having half his upper body peeled off

    Given that the Stonemen are sent to the ruins of Valyria, and how similar the afflicted skin looks to Dragon Scales, I wonder if Greyscale is a Bioweapon created by the Valyrians with Blood Magic…

    Game of Thrones Biological Warfare = If Cersei made the Lannister army cover their weapons(swords/spears) or even arrows in the blood of Greyscale people to use against her enemies, even if they were to survive the arrow/wound, they would have Greyscale and die from that making the mortality rate almost 100% from anyone who was injured/wounded

    Greyscale is an STD that an insane Targaryen contracted after he tried to sleep with a Dragon.
