Sam didn’t come up with the cure he read about the cure that had been forbidden by the maesters due to a high mortality rate but performed it anyway feeling he owed it to lord commander Jeor Mormont
Sam should've contracted it, it was a disgustingly good scene transition but there's no way he did that to the majority of Jorahs body without getting a splash of infected tissue.
@@xSmuggen didn’t he wear gloves ?
@@xSmuggen he wore gloves, plus he used very liberal amounts of alcohol as a disinfectant.
Given the the cure requires cutting away the calcified flesh, cleaning off the puss with alcohol, and thus exposing the underlying tissue to the fresh air, I'm willing to bet that the bacteria is vulnerable to oxygen, similar to gangrene.
@@xSmuggen he was pretty well covered. The Arch-maester said many failed the treatment because it was a difficult, meticulous treatment. I think the Arch-maester was impressed by his attention to detail.
It was so pleasing to see sam removing jorah's greyscale
I always saw that scene as stupid. Greyscal isnt surface level infection. Its internal too. And no cure has been formed to purify a man's internal organs from the disease.
Kushagra I agree! Samwell is much smarter and capable than he is given credit for!
@@khc333 In the books maybe. But saying Show Sam was any sort of a genius is an overstament and a deplorable defense of D&D.
It was supposed to be a shocking and gory TV-MA moment but it was just really stupid. Not a single person before Sam ever considered cutting off the infected area? The most primitive and basic way to stop an infection has never been tried before? Show was so smart after S4.
Kiritu George I did not say he was a genius... I just said smarter than he was given credit for which wasn’t much at all.
These people just don't know how to use lotion.
@Qdog119 I'm white and use lotion every day and so do most of the white people I know 🤨 maybe you shouldn't base a statement about what white people do or don't do based on one or two people?
@Qdog119 lol i didnt know your mom's family represents the enirety of white people
@Qdog119 oh gee, thank you very much! you shouldn't have bothered giving me a star but i wholeheartedly accept it
It puts the lotion on the skin or it gets the grayscale!
Lotion doesn't exist in this world.
Shireen Baratheon was treated horribly BY HER OWN MOTHER, THAT'S WHY SHE IS SO SAD.
Also wouldn't it be horrible if Jon Connington infects "Aegon"
Larkin Hancock lol as soon as I finished watching the video I came down to comment this 😂
I see a epidemic breaking out in Westeros. Immune Shireen will be da queen.
@Targaryen Dynasty i thought it was Rhaegar and Elia Martells "son" named Aegon
@Targaryen Dynasty I haven't watched that one.
@Targaryen Dynasty I don't like this theory of there's but I did like their Hightower Dance of the Dragons theory. They have alot of good content
The maesters need to come up with antibiotics fast
wolf bane I mean that is show only it’s absurd that they wouldn’t have tried that yet, and it’s the most primitive way to get rid of disease of course it wouldn’t work
They have penicillin in the show I believe. When Pycell was trying to treat The Mountain in the show he mentions he doesn’t respond to the ‘mold of bread.’ That’s when Qyburn takes over.
Antibiotics does nothing with viruses.
Chloroform would be better since they could perform the operation.
@@i.cs.z Grey scale is bacterial as mentioned in video
Bear in mind that in the show Stannis talks about how Shireen contracts it from an infected doll that she pressed to her cheek.
You have the like most soothing voice I have ever herd!!! I could literally listed to your voice all the time
YEA, HIS VOICE IS SO SOOTHING THAT I DOZED OFF A FEW TIMES & HAD TO KEEP LOOPING THE TAPE. 😴😳😴😔😴
WAKE UP ! 📣 ............😨 I'M UP
he literally has Prince Zuko's voice!
I really want to read every single book in this series because of your videos. There are so many series that could spin off from these books!
How do they eat if their mouths are sealed shut?
I thought they made noises. I don't think sealed shut at all.
Suppository based diet pellets
ayush kumar they eat it South Park style
They die.
They go mad...
This is the GOT content I like.... book content😂
I think Sam's was a mixture I'd good luck and planning, he carefully removed it, he would of burnt it to get rid of it, and he must of dutifully chemically cleaned the room and utensils. The luck part comes with the fact that he was cured, he just as well could not have been. That's what I see anyway
Luv your great content plz continue with the GOT breakdowns.
Who knew all you had to no is cut off the top layer of skin and sanitize it to cure it.
Thanks season 7 for making this look like a mild issue.
Only if the case is relatively young, even then it isn’t guaranteed to work, and it is dangerous to the person attempting the procedure. It’s hardly mild.
The procedure doesnt cure it, it makes it go dormant but the damage to the body is permanent jorah is still in pain the rest of his life and the infected area never heals
Sam only repeated a method that was outlawed for practice because it potentially caused death. There was a lot more to it than slicing off skin parts.
Princess Shireen got it from an enemy of her fathers who sent them a doll that had been touch with greyscale.
Shireen contracted grayscale from a doll stannis bought her from a trader and stuck in her cradle. Dragonstone is an active volcano and supposed to be hot
If we believe that greyscale was created by Mother Rhoyne to kill the Valyrians(Garin’s Curse), it’s a miracle Shireen survived at all, considering she had fairly recent Valyrian ancestry through Rhaelle Targaryen.
Some scary stuff is coming our way in the WoW. Am glad GoT left is some mysteries to explore in the future
Hold up, isn't it kind of stupid to transport people affected of Grayscale to a place near The Rhoyne, a huge RIVER that can be infected with gray scale and then in turn infect thousands of humans through contact with the water.
Yeah, even I thought that.
But it doesn't infect people like that, I don't think it can transfer to water and survive.
But yeah it's really cruel and stupid let people that are slowly becoming monsters all together in a place where it's dangerous for other people instead of kill them for mercy. It's just one of that traditions that don't make any sense I guess xD
The river would dilute the bacteria to the point where people are not infected.
I'm pretty sure that Greyscale isn't transmitted through water, only by touch.
It sounds like a combination of Leporasy and Rabies.
Not a bad combo!
What an observation. I tried to explain what it was to someone and couldn't describe it.
that S7 roast in the end. loved it
Some of the symptoms of greyscale don’t match up with the fate of “stone men”. If your mouth is sealed, and you’re driven mad, and you’re completely shunned or exiled, you’ve got about 3-4 to live at most due to the need for water.
It’s been awhile since I read any source material and I haven’t even finished this video yet so maybe I’m missing something, but for greyscale to be that devastating, and for the ruins to have the population of Stone Men, there must be dozens of people getting shipped there every month, at least. That would mean active greyscale outbreaks, which we don’t hear about. At least not yet.
If my hands get too dry my skin will crack and turn grey and I jokingly call it my greyscale lucky lotion makes it go away
Nice to meet a fellow Zachary
Sam curing Jorah's greyscale was almost as insulting a "plot twist" as Danaerys inexplicably flipping her shit and going insane in Season 8, Episode 5. It made me actively MAD that D&D took such a "short cut" with a disease that is otherwise firmly established as LEGENDARY in its' consequences and death toll!
This would be like if they made a movie about the Bubonic Plague, and the "surprise" cure turned out to be something as simple and eye-rollingly brain damaged a solution as "Orange Juice."
He didn't actually cure it and stop being butthurt about it. He meticiously scrapped it off.
He treated the disease by basically cutting away the infection and then applying medicine so his body could deal with what was left. It isn’t rock science for such a physical infection, much like amputating a limb, but it isn’t done often because it is extremely dangerous to the surgeon, who can easily contract it, doesn’t have a good chance of working, and can only be done for relatively young cases. It was a well thought out treatment for something like this.
You act as if it ruined the show or some shit. It was nowhere near as egregious as dany going mad. I mean sure, it’s a dumb plot point, but you act as if D and D just came to your house and killed your dog. Its not that big a deal.
No it's not like that at all. There's literally another character that survived greyscale in the story, Shireen. That wasn't some impossible completely unheard of event, and it was hinted in the maesters notes it was possible but frowned upon because it rarely worked
It doesn’t make any sense whatsoever. The huge threat of greyscale are the mental defects that occur due to the disease entering the brain. That implies that the infection permeates the skin and goes to the organs. Removing an outer layer of tissue wouldn’t stop an infection that is able to go to the organs.
Why not throw them on an island? What if a bunch of the Stone Men just wandered off away from the Sorrows? What’s stopping them?
Yes, just wander across a continent, very easy
I always saw that Sam-Jorah scene as stupid. Greyscale isn't surface level infection. Its internal too. And no cure has been formed to purify a man's internal organs from the disease. Game of Thrones was a huge let down. I await to see TWOW.
i mean the video says it spreads on skin then spreads to the organs. and jorah's skin was not covered with greyscale so my guess is it didn't spread to the organs.
@@kubilayalbayrak8419 People cut whole limbs off when the infection begins and still find it reappearing elsewhere. And greyscale doesnt need to cover your whole body to start affecting your organs.
I doubt it spread to his organs or you would see some effect of organ damage. Seems like something that would happen later or everyone would die of the infection within a few months.
@@blankname2026 No one dies of greyscale after their organs are affected. They can live for years even after greyscale has reached their brains.
Have you read the books? If so then you would know this. Case in point, Harlaw Greyjoy(who lived for years before Euron claims he killed him) or even the stonemen of the Bridge of Dreams/Sorrows( or Valyria as the show would have one believe.)
I don’t think your heart and lungs and other internal organs can be turned to stone without any sign. In real life, infections tend to spread to organs in the late stages when the bacteria enters the bloodstream and disseminates to the rest of the body. The fact that he hasn’t gone mad from the disease suggests it hasn’t spread to the brain and other organs and remains a skin infection.
You mean to tell me that excruciating looking procedure that sam did looked like "a knife through butter???" Did we watch the same scene???!
Palmer's cocoa butter will do the trick.
Dragon riders came from sheep herders. You would think that they would be more humble. Guess power does change you
So did the Macedonias in our history, later on, they conquered most of the known world following Alexander the Great. They were not a humble bunch either. All civilizations start from humble origins, with time some became great, some die and some do both.
@@Munchaussen When the Macedonians rode dragons? Dragons are nonexistent.
@@thesecretlibrary890 🤦🏻♀️
I don't see the greyscale disease as something that can be cured with medicine or medical interventions. That's no illness, it's a magical curse.
SPOILER ALERT
I mean it was cured with medicine.
Cielo Pachirisu not in the books. In the show it’s was but that’s just bad fan fiction at this point.
Eh, it’s definitely more biologically possible than the magic, it’s not like they literally turn to stone.
In the show isn't it mentioned that a doll infected with grey scale was given to Shreen as a plot to kill Stannis or something?
@6:30 Yeah... not many of us know what its like to be locked in a plague filled city.
Shireen contracting greyscale might be Robert's fault because he gave Storm's End to Renly.
Reminds me of leprosys to say the truth
we can already see how much potential can these stonemen be one of the most destructive villains like the white walkers
Part of the ship, part of the crew...
Odd time to post but I'm not complaining
Hey mister whycreate please do explain more about this Geryplague and explore more please I’m interested
Another great video.
Did any Targs (adults or children) ever contract greyscale?? Just wondering since you mentioned the living conditions on Dragonstone? Does anyone know?
Targaryens never suffered from greyscale, but if it was out of luck or if they have a special immunity is unknown. Shireen has a Targaryen great-grandmother, Egg's youngest daughter Rhaelle who was wed to a Baratheon. Also, Targaryens are said to be immune to many diseases of Westeros, but not to all. The Great Spring Sickness in Dunc and Egg novels killed a lot of people, including a Targaryen king and two of his grandsons. Another plague in the times of Jaehaerys the Conciliator took his daughter Daenerys. Oh, now I remember, king Jaehaerys and queen Alyssanne's daughter Maegelle became a septa, was known for her "healing hands" but died nursing children with greyscale. But I don't remember if she died of this disease or because she was just exhausted....
@@lalywindland5764 Oh my gosh, you're right!! I know the Targs have a doctrine of superiority that allows them to be exempt from the taboos of incest, but I always wondered if that was part of the massive PR machine. But I forgot about Daenerys! She did die as an infant. I haven't read the Dunk and Egg books yet (I'm ashamed) so I didn't remember the Targ King & princes that died.
That's a very interesting point about Shireen having Targ blood, and I think there may be some more Targ blood in the Baratheon blood (as it was rumored) going way back to the Founding of the house. Great points. I really appreciate your answer. I've gotta go check my Fire & Blood (which does contradict the WOIAF book a bit, especially on the birth order of Jahearys and Alysaane's children.
Thank you again!!
@@TheTam0613 Yes, the doctrine of exceptionalism was very good PR. Some loyal septons and septas preached all throughout the 7 kingdoms that incest was fine only for the Targaryens, as they were the blood of old Valyria, owned dragons, were immune to many common diseases and that it was customary in Valyria to wed kin to kin (they had no proof of that). In reality, it was just a clever scheme of king Jaehaerys, who was in love with his sister Alyssanne and had married her in spite of everyone else. The things we do for love... To prevent the Faith from rebelling again against Targaryen marriages, the king and queen used this doctrine with great success, as nobody ever complained of Targaryen incest again and the Targaryens were seen as demi-gods even after the death of their dragons. I also suspect they married kin to kin to be able to hatch dragons from cradle eggs, or else they would not pass up the oportunities of advantageous alliances they could have made by marrying their sons and daughters to powerful nobles of the realm. Jaehaerys and Alyssanne had a long prosperous rule and marriage, and 13 children, and maybe that's why people believed their PR. However, they were not spared the sufferings of common medieval people, with many of their children dieing young, before their parents--3 in the cradle, 1 from a plague, 2 teenage daughters in childbirth, etc. The Dunc and Egg books are less dark than ASOIAF and very interesting, set about 80 years before ASOIAF. Dunc is Brienne's ancestor and Egg is Jon's and Dany's, but also ancestor to other Targaryens and Baratheons, like Robert. Other interesting characters appear, and some have descendants in ASOIAF, like the Red Widow, ancestor of Lannisters, and some are still alive in ASOIAF, like Bloodraven, Maester Aemon and Walder Frey. House Baratheon also has Targaryen blood through Orys Baratheon, bastard brother of Aegon the Conquerer.
TamHutchins the iron islands is the only place I recall being specifically mentioned for greyscale susceptibility. Some of of Balon Greyjoy’s sons and brothers died from it. It’s said to thrive in cold, damp, wet areas which exactly describes the iron islands
If Greyscale thrives in cold, damp conditions, then maybe it is a fungal infection, not bacterial like he said in the video. I know , many fungal infections like warm moist conditions, but some prefer cool & damp. Fungal infections can be very hard to eradicate, especially if it is systemic and not just a surface infection. Fungal infections inhabit the skin/flesh they infect. They don't just consume and disrupt like bacterial and viral infection; they can reside in and transform the flesh. Considering how the Stonemen look, I'd say they are the end product of a full body infusion, like a lichen....
your channel is wonderfull
The boat that Tyrion was on going through the Sorrows is much bigger, as it was desc ones as having multiple cabins and a lower deck.
I don't remember the mouth and eyes part...
In think there is an in book “cure” for greyscale, which would leave the mind untouched but allow the disease to progress. They talked about garin being alive and holding court, maybe even with magic. Imagine bringing a stoneman back from the dead
Who else is watching this 2020 quaratine?
is it just me or does it look like Westeros is screaming at a contemptuous Essos?
Jon Connington contracted greyscale in the books not Jorah Mormont in the series.
Game of Thrones has definitely lost it's effect after that disater of a finale season.
I'm almost too salty to even watch lore videos anymore because Dumb and Dumber metaphorically bashed my skull in with a rock.
I just see D&d as some sort of weird fan fiction that somehow got funded to be made. But I've been reading these books since I was 13, I'm 21 now, GRRMs works and lore videos will always have a special place in my heart.
Its grrm's fault too. He should of worked harder to finish the series so the writers didnt have to do it themselves....
I almost forgot that we had a good series they destroyed everything in the end I hate GOT
What if the measures created greyscale as a means of control?
Ooo new mic?
Madness isn't cutting it as an explanation. Sorry
You sound like Prince Zuko!! It's like Zuko telling a story about Game of Thrones!! Made the video even more enjoyable to me!! Oml
Good morning!!!!
After reading the books; The entire show after season 3 is kinda well... bad. Not just the last season; They deviated so far from the books and combined characters and storylines to such as scale, you could argue it is an entirely different fantasy series to Ice and Fire. This is no Harry Potter; More like The Hobbit movie.
put some sugar on it. do they have sugar?
I understand were your coming from in the fact that a movie isnt what its book lived up to be but no movie made from a book is and not to mention the cure that they used in the show seemed fairly complex and like luck it might not even work with all greyscale patients but I thought it was an interesting part to add to the show
i got terrfified when i read fire and blood part where aerea had greyscale
who else is listenign to this durrign quarantine
It seems it's basically a combination of syphilis and leprosy. Terryfying.
I really wish Greyscale had a more prominent role in the series. It could be like a medieval version of the Cordyceps virus from "The Last of Us"
I thought maybe using valerion steel to remove grey scale was the direction they were going...apparently not.
NGL this was my favorite RUclips channel but with no new books and season 8...I've so little interest in this anymore :(

Meanwhile Daemon getting the Crabfeeder’s blood all over him…. Uh yeah that’s gonna go well
There’s a theory that dragon riders are mostly immune to diseases like greyscale and stuff! From what I remember, being bonded with a dragon greatly improves one’s strength and health
Imagine people trapped in city without escape because of disease... Yeah, we know. Hello from 2020.
At least COVID isn't as dangerous or fatal as grayscale. Now *that* would be disastrous, and a better reason for locking down the world
Frows?
maybe it refers to to and froes. i don't know either.
And she ended up being burned at the stake...was that in the book?
Another thing, NOONE as a problem killing Women, children, man, beast, a perfect stranger skipping along a road, but WHY NOT KILL THE AFFLICTED, CONSIDERING THE RISK. NOT BUYING IT, seems RIDICULOUS to allow them to gather and in this world WHO KNOWS, THEY COULD CONQUER THE WORLD, are they so different from the dead beyond the wall?
What is your source?
Nandi vardhan the Books? It’s not that complicated
Crazy how our world is fucked up now. Lol.
I just realized something. Joffrey was proved illegitimate because of his blonde hair. Baratheons have dark, black hair. Shereen (I don’t how to spell her name) has blonde hair......
Greyscale kinda looks like rock diesese
