In this animation tutorial for beginners we look at some of the most basic principles of animation. Master these basics and you will understand a lot more about how to animate your own characters and ideas and really make them special.
The #1 rule of animation: As an animator, you have to control how motions look and feel.
Theat means you need to do more than just somehow moving things around. The most powerful tool that you have to control how a motion feels is spacing.
Spacing is the distance an element travels between two frames of an animation.
Small spacing = small movement
Big spacing = big movement
By increasing and decreasing the spacings over the course of multiple frames, easing can be added to a motion.
A motion with the same spacing between each frame is called a linear motion. This only occurs very rarely in nature and usually needs to be avoided.
Spacing is, personally, one of my favorite things to experiment with. You can get all kinds of different speeds, motions, and even weight depending on how you space your drawings. 👀
It's so crazy how changing the spacing can totally change an animation. And sometimes just one frame more or one frame less can feel so different.
@@AnimatorIsland yeah like if you made a line barely moving then hit a wall and have huge spacing it might look faster
The strange thing about a "snappy animation" I've heard that term both used as a compliment and a negative critique. I guess it depends on the situation.
Yeah it definitely depends on what style you are going for. There is some excellent snappy animation in Hotel Transylvania or Wonder Over Yonder and it really fits there. There certainly are animators who would strongly prefer a realistic over a snappy cartoony style, but both has its purpose, both can be done extremely well. Really interesting topic.
I've seen countless videos on this topic but this one is the first to actually make sense in my head. Thank you.
Awesome! Simple information but great to drill in and your examples are so well explained. Thanks for what you're doing!
Thank you for your kind words!

Hi Ferdinand. Thanks a lot for this Gem of a video; the best I watched on the topic. Well done mate 🙂
I love how you explain. Thank you
Looking forward to more, thanks for making these awesome videos!
Thank you sir, i was doing some things wrong in spacing and you video helped me out.
Gosh, you give me so much hope and take away how overwhelming learning animation can be.
The whole time I was watching this i felt like I was so bad that I needed this :,)
Thanks for the tutorial sir 🥰
very professional guide !
Thank you sm! You explain it all very well :)
Thank you, this was really helpful!
Man I love your videos! Thanks so much!
Sometimes you may want a linear motion though, such as in the "drawing" animation I am working on for the intro sequence for my cartoon (basically, in part of the intro the stuff is slowly drawn in, first in wireframe, then slowly filled with colors - that sort of thing looks best with linear motion based on my experiments).
//edit: Also nice to see more people using OpenToonz, though I prefer Tahoma.
Splendid. Thank you.
Very nice explanation sir, I want to learn more about animation.
Thanks a lot💚

This is awesome!
Is it possible to hire you to make a music video animation?
What app are you using?
I am confused. Is the spacing supposed to between the actual drawings (while the frames are constantly spaced on timeline) or is spacing between the frames on the time line?
Spacing is the distance of the lines of the actual drawing from one frame to the next. The distance of moments on the timeline is called timing. Yeah, it can be quite confusing :)
@@AnimatorIsland ohhhg
Thanks
Which software are you using?
OpenToonz.
I do animate I'm making one for someone's birthday u can watch it when I post it on the 30th 🥺
