The rebellion of teaching people things for free is the greatest, most heroic, mostly godly and noble thing you could possibly do. We have deprived ourselves of knowledge so much today in favor of profit and it is heartbreaking, disheartening, and infuriating. Thank you for this gift.
Today? As opposed to when? We're moving in the right direction; today we have more freedom of information than we've ever had before! In the past, trade secrets were guarded by nepotism, guilds, political boundaries, and class. Knowledge was often kept to the literate and literacy was far from universal. Even the great library of Alexandria's vast knowledge didn't always make it past the doors onto the streets of the city in which it stood, because knowledge was seen as a profession and not something everyone ought to attain. Yes, there is a lot of profit seeking today and we should be wary of that, but we're still going the right way and we're doing better than our ancestors ever could. This is reason to celebrate.

I made the mistake of going to school for animation. They started me off in basic classes (figure drawing) so it was awhile before I finally got my first animation class that wasn't about design or storytelling (so no actual animating or sometimes even drawing taking place) What did this class involve? WATCHING. RUclips VIDEOS. Also some videos from Richard Williams' series that you can find online easily enough if you know where to look but I think the school did pay for them. I feel like I would watch any educational video on RUclips instead of going to school, mostly bc I actually learn something useful, but also there’s so much passion and entertaining content here that helps with demonstration bc this guy is a talented animator so he’s not just pretending to know this stuff
It's because you're not curious learning in school which is why you find it boring, you watch educational vids on RUclips because you searched for it, you searched it because you're curious. Don't get me wrong, I feel the same way too.
I recommend taking a simple animation you've already done and applying every principle as you go, this will help understand the concept and memorize it better.
Better yet, make a new one and try to apply them this time around. Going back to modify something you've already finished slows down your growth, artists need to always move forward and learn from their mistakes instead of dwelling on them.
I just want you to know that 5 years later you are STILL helping people out here. I cannot express enough how thankful I am for the knowledge you have given me….for Free!! ❤❤
Whilst I'm not doing much animation I must admit, this is probably one of the best videos I've ever seen. Immensely packed with information, but never overloads the viewer, easy to follow, and great content. Just... wow.
Can't imagine how much work this would have taken! I'm making short animations and it feels like they take forever! Super underrated and very educational!
I think at somepoint animators ganz access to the speed force, so they can finish the work their doing. And than again I Look at what people can doodle in mere seconds and I'm like: wow... those are the most pleasing 7 lines I've ever seen
Dude serious respect to all animators! 🙌 I am shocked to see how much efforts animators put for such simple cartoons. I can't imagine how strenuous it must be in Anime production. But still they all are just very hard working
I think the only animation principle that only exists in animation and nowhere else is Straight Ahead & Pose to Pose. Anticipation I feel like exists in some other topic besides animation though I can't exactly tell where.
As a seasoned "straight ahead animator" who has done it this way for over 20 years, this Pose to Pose lesson was quite a revelation. I will need to look into this more (still unsure how exactly to do it), for eg in an app such as Clip Studio, that means that you need to make a key pose every 5 or 10 frames, then insert extremes in between them. Which means you need to set the onion skin to "seeing previously 5-10 frames." This is quite interesting, I will definitely try it. I never went to Animation school, but look at how you can learn such a revelation on a video such as this. This video is excellent.
I don't animate, but I study nature science. Most of the principles came from basics physics, such as the squash and stretch (elasticity and/or special relativity), the follow through and overlapping (inertia), the timing (graphical physics) or the slow in and slow out (acceleration). The staging, the secondary action, the appeal and the exaggeration are from psychology. The arcs and the solid drawing are physical biology and foreshortening in real life. And all of them are combine with years of animating experience. That is why those principles are still followed through until this day.
Art originated from man observing the world around him and representing it through icons. Therefore, it makes perfect sense why the principles of animation would reflect real life.
I always have been a drawer and a doodler, but never tried animation. I just got procreate dreams and I think this is a perfect video for someone like me to get started. Thank you so much
I'm an aspiring animator working on my most beloved project entitled 'Mrs. Devious'. Although it's humor is meant to be thought provoking and mature, I also want for there to also be moments of physical comedy. For this, it is imperative that I learn these principles. Watching this video intimidated me, seeing as how many aspects go into animation, but it also gave me a new perspective that I'd not seen taking animation classes in school. Thanks so much for making this! It truly helps!
@@alfiedupreezI don't currently; the project is still in very early stages of development. However, in the future, I intend to compile all my concept sketches, designs, and layouts into a file to release. Thanks so much for taking interest!
This video deserves some kind of award or something, really informative! Wouldn't this mainly apply to disneyish cartoony cartoons? I mean i couldn't imagine goku landing from a flight and squishing in shape and volume, or exaggeratedly winding his arm before punching frieza.
It definitely depends on the style you're going for. Anime like you're talking about is generally more gritty/realistic than whimsical, so there are levels of exaggeration that probably aren't going to be hit in anime style animation. However,it's still hugely important to make 100% clear the action happening on-screen. Goku might not blob outward when he lands, but the force of the impact still needs to squash him down through how his knees bend and his chest follows through. The wind-ups for his punches might not be incredibly large, but perhaps they're emphasized with slow-mo or wind effects on the sides of the screen.
No he deff wind or pull back when punching actually they have a whole scene for that lol but ur also right more like i think its called rubber hose animation which is what disney old cartoons used
I’ve been watching this video for years and I still think it’s the most beautiful thing on this website. It genuinely is the most pure, helpful, heart cleansing, genius video ever made. I know this comment might seem like a lot, especially for a video about the principals about the animation, but this video means so much to me and it would break my heart if it disappeared. Thank you Alan Becker, to creating an honestly nostalgic and meaningful video for me and the rest of us
The fact that i wrote everything with points and highlighting tips....while watching his video 😭😭😭 I just loved your knowledge and the way you teach bro. God bless you🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼❤. (In case I'll forget something while animating I'll watch my notes )😅

Wow!! 24 minutes that covered all year of the Animation course in University...and the way you explained it makes even Doctor wants to change a profession to animator.
I feel this as if a complete course of animation..... Great efforts..... Fantastic explanation Awsome and perfect illustrations.. Thanks a lot, I m not at all an animator still couldn't resist to watch this completely
While I myself Can’t draw too well or too quick, and I don’t have enough free time to learn, this is still very interesting. I hope animation classes show these videos to their students (though in a classroom setting, I would feel pretty overwhelmed, but that’s just me.)
This is one of the best animation tutorials I have ever seen, everything is explained very well with great examples to understand why those principles are so important.
I'm studying the subject Motion Design at College. My major is Cinema. I know nothing about it but this tutorial explained and helped me a lot. Thanx Mr. Becker. My professor introduce us to your channel. It's very useful, easy to understand and clear.
I've noticed that there are cases in animation where you'd want to deliberately ignore some of these. For example... Say you want more of a comedic effect from your punch, but still want it to be powerful; can skip the anticipation step to really emphasize the "BEGONE!!!" factor of it.
WTH THIS HELPED ME SO MUCH!!! I haven't been animating for MONTHS because I felt like I have stopped animating greatly, and decided to actually try animating frame by frame, but something stopped me: I didn't 100% know how to draw frame by frame, but hey today i've been blessed by this video! This video actually taught me A LOT that I didn't know and really, I thank myself for watching this video before animating. Great job!
This was more useful than that year long class of digital tech that I had. The teacher never would teach and wasn't really good at getting the students engaged in what we were doing. I wanted to do animation and have the tiniest bit of hope that I could do something with it in the future.
Too bad most people on this planet don't know how to live without needing to make thousands of dollars every month by part-time jobs. Schools [in the government-invented sense] should not exist at all. Any graduate/expert animator who knows how to live without paying any taxes, knows how to grow his own food, knows how to eat only once per day (dinner, like I do), and knows how to live without needing to be connected to any government-operated utility grids, could easily open their own "schools" to teach animation at virtually no cost to students, whom should also be taught how to live without needing monthly thousands of dollars.
@KamiKuru You fail to explain what makes me wrong about anything I said. What makes you think I'm "out of touch with reality" as you call it? Do you assume that the majority of mankind is born incapable of living in harmony with natural law [which was the main point of my initial reply]? You're not making any sense.

As someone who has wanted to get into animation for years, I am quite thankful for this video...but then again, a lot of old-school cartoons have inadvertently taught me this without even a single tutorial. Lol
Right?! Nice to know that all that time spent watching cartoons was actually teaching me something! And our parents (at least mine) always made too much TV seem like a bad thing 😌

I watched part of this video like a year back before I knew who Alan Becker was. I've now watched pretty much every Animation Vs video, clicked on this video again because watching Alans videos inspired me to actually learn animation... and then I realized that he made this one too. This is impressive.
Since this video has subtitle, you can just download the .srt file of this video to get the whole script, then just arrange the paragraph to make it tidy.

Well I thought it could be better to learn on my own, but watching this... wow! Now I can finally make something look realistic and I know when to go overboard and not. I usually animate per frame but it makes things look weird and shaky. So I am very thankful for this and keep up the great work!

@@sahave5042 I mean, it is confusing for me at least in two different levels. First, in terms of animation, since it doesn't adress clearly some of the ideas in this video. Second, color. Better yet, make a new one and try to apply them this time around. Going back to modify something you've already finished slows down your growth, artists need to always move forward and learn from their mistakes instead of dwelling on them.

@@eggyrepublic nope i never defended the price but... it's def gonna be a long fuckin course
It is, my brother said this is what they thought Him in a animation course in college and it wasn’t cheap. but this is free

I'm pretty sure goku isn't a water balloon
No he deff wind or pull back when punching actually they have a whole scene for that lol but ur also right more like i think its called rubber hose animation which is what disney old cartoons used
