You wanna know the funniest thing? It’s my fifth year in an art school, where animation is one of the subjects, where I’m currently in the animation masters program, and no one has explained timing and spacing better to me than you did just now. I’ve been flailing about this whole time any time it came to animation, trying to just eyeball it because every time I asked for it to be explained it never got anywhere or I just didn’t understand it. And today I finally learned the difference between Timing and Spacing… thank you lots dude

It took most of my time in education to realise that most teachers/professors don't know the answer to your questions, and instead of just saying so; they lead you down a verbal maze that makes you give up on asking in future.

I still remember watching my first opentoonz tutorial on this channel, yeeears ago. If I'm honest, I gave up after a while because at the time the program had some aspects that were unnecessarily complicated but to be expected of a free software, to be fair. One of my major problems was exactly this though, spacing and timing. I could never fully figure it out by myself, even when I listened to animators explain those little time charts on the side of the paper, I felt I couldn't transfer it into my own work process, somehow.
But this video is awesome! It's so well put together and flows nicely with great visual aids. Great work.

I have a square I want to move from A to B constantly speeding up and I want the animation to take 24 frames with 24 drawings. I tried using onion skin cutting the way in halves getting close to starting position and It looked good, but was way to fast. It took 9 frames instead of 24. I simply couldn't fit more.
In order to slow down the acceleration i added in beetwens increasing frame count to 17 and further to 24 but when i played it it looked like the speed is rising gradually. Few times step by step. I examined it and here's the result:
    distance from A (sample): 10px, 40px, 80px, 160px, 320px, 640px
here the speed is rising constantly. The diffrences are 30px, 40px, 80px, 160px, 320px.
    distance from A (sample): 10px, 20px, 40px, 60px, 80px, 120px, 160px, 240px, 320px, 480px, 640px
But after adding in-beetwens The speed rise gradually. The diffrences are 10px, 20px, 20px, 20px, 40px, 40px, 80px, 80px, 160px, 160px and this is after just first "wave" of in-betweening.
I tried placing in beetwens not in the half but a little before half of adjacent frames but the results are that square is randomly speedind up and slowing down before reaching destination.
I also tried cutting in thirds, fours, etc. but even then I can't be sure whether will it take intended 24 frames not mentioning that cutting in thirds, fours, etc. isn't as easy as cutting in halves so I keept thinking of a better way.
There is an option to animate it straight ahead. That way using onion skin i can make sure that the square is constantly speeding up and that it last 24 frames, but I don't know where will it end up in the end so that's not the way
In that scenario how can i control how fast the object is speeding up? Or mabye I am unnecessarily worrying about it to take exacly 24 frames?

I do 3D animation, I went to a 4 year college and 12 principles of animation is barely mentioned. I know about it but I felt like I never really had time to practice or understand how it really works. I do 3D animation and sure I got feedbacks but I still felt like I was just winging it. Therefore my animations looks so janky and rough in 3D animation. I'll definitely be keeping this video in mind when applying to 3D animation and I'm also getting familiar with using the graph animation systems (in Maya). I'm still learning but I'm getting there. I want to achieve that natural movement feel like seen in Disney/Pixar films, or if it has a stop motion feel, to feel like the Spiderman Mile Morales movie.
