Timing and spacing is the most important principle of animation. But, it's by far the most misunderstood. This principle basically boils down to what we see and when we see it.

Bro I was vibing so much to the ad that I didn’t even know it was a ad
It was an ad?
£
I dont even know where is the ad
0:33
Yeh bro 😅
I'm barely 1,5 minute in and I just gotta compliment you on the originality and quality of that ad! Great job!!!
Do y mind helping me witch my project??
Stgg ads are usually corny, his got me dancing in traffic😂
was looking for this comment. First time coming to the channel, and ofc the art is impressive, but da*** I am VERY impressed with the ad song!!! More entertaining than. A LO of the majority of ad sponsors that artists use and make on RUclips!!
Another RUclipsr that makes theirs ads into songs is MistaGG. Check him out @MistaGG
The most effort and quality in an ad I've ever seen. I'd watch more ads if they were all this creative.
0:34 Finally an ad i can enjoy. You have so much flow bro!
That clip studio paint ad actually kept me watching normally i skip it but you made me enjoy an ad and at the same time inform me you are an actual genius
SO TRUEEE, this was the first time i felt so suprised and less annoyed in seeing an AD or a sponsor!
@@insanityraul7582🤝i hope its gotten better, friend!! im usin procreate instead of clip studio but the struggle at the start is always rough….
You wanna know the funniest thing? It’s my fifth year in an art school, where animation is one of the subjects, where I’m currently in the animation masters program, and no one has explained timing and spacing better to me than you did just now. I’ve been flailing about this whole time any time it came to animation, trying to just eyeball it because every time I asked for it to be explained it never got anywhere or I just didn’t understand it. And today I finally learned the difference between Timing and Spacing… thank you lots dude
Thats amazing to hear. Its crazy how much great educational content can be found on RUclips.
Unfortunately that’s a common story. Glad you aren’t taking instructors as the gospel and researching!
It took most of my time in education to realise that most teachers/professors don't know the answer to your questions, and instead of just saying so; they lead you down a verbal maze that makes you give up on asking in future.
yea schools often just hire students they tought since its way cheaper then hiring industry proffesionals so there is a high posibility that your techer is not that great of an animator
Tbh that's kinda how it goes. RUclips has been one of the best sources for animation knowledge.
I must compliment you, man, on the originality of that ad - felt like old-school rapping all over.
You just sold me clipstudio paint with a rap.
I skip most ads but dude I couldn't skip thisss!! great rap song ✨
It worked! Glad to hear it. yeah I skip them too. I figured I'd better make mine worth watching. Happy animating!
@@NobleFrugal although i like and use krita this is fire
@@NobleFrugal You are helping me so much tysm
If only every ad was like this I would watch every one and buy every product. Seriously dude: That intro ad was amazing
You unlocked the knowledge in my brain of how to actually use the timing/spacing chart along with my Keys and Extremes.
That's, like, THE QUESTION I've had for so long. "How do animators KNOW how to use that chart?"
And now it's answered. Thank you so much.
Subscribed.
0:15 Ok Thanos.
HELP?? 💀
Ive never wanted a full version of an ad more in my life!
I still remember watching my first opentoonz tutorial on this channel, yeeears ago. If I'm honest, I gave up after a while because at the time the program had some aspects that were unnecessarily complicated but to be expected of a free software, to be fair. One of my major problems was exactly this though, spacing and timing. I could never fully figure it out by myself, even when I listened to animators explain those little time charts on the side of the paper, I felt I couldn't transfer it into my own work process, somehow.
But this video is awesome! It's so well put together and flows nicely with great visual aids. Great work.
Finally!!! I've looked up so many tutorials on timing charts and they all was confusing but this one is very understandable. Thank you so much for the important information and making it accessible to everyone 🙏
you're channel is easily one of the best animation resources I've seen on RUclips. I've been animating for over 15 years and you explain processes better that 90% of people out there.
bro the rap in the beginning🔥🔥🔥
That ad in the beginning was a chefs kiss
Really concise and well made tutorial. Great introduction for beginners, but also an excellent refresher for all animators.
Gotta say this video is great for anyone who struggles with animating frames. I have been animating for 3 years (self taught) now and never got around the techniques to make my animations look smooth, I always animated on 1s but that made my work hard to do and took forever, following this video I got to learn more of how I can make my animations look good mixing the DPS to maximize the quality of the animation. Really glad I found this video, keep up the great work man!!
watched this -> didnt understand a thing -> will watch again
two years in animation college and i just realized my lecturer never gave me this lesson at 2d animation, all he talked was about the whole principles and never had any specifications or tips for what's really important between those principles for a freshman, which ended up making me more confused and insecure because of how stiff my animations looked like, thank you so much for this!! plus i love the ad omg
This is so kind of you to teach! The world needs more people like you that just want to help people accomplish their goals
man that ad was something gotta appriciate ngl that clip was crisp
did not expect for him to drop bars caught me off guard
I've watched a gazillion youtube videos about the matter, listened to "pro" old school animators, but your single video defeated them all in just 1 minute. Fantastic exposure about "how to in-between". Respect.
this is the first animation video i’ve found that actually explained timing charts, thank you so much!!! you explained everything so clearly, this is the most helpful vid i’ve watched yet!!!!
I don't think I have ever hit the like button during a sponsor segment, that was really smooth
Camera movement is a very overlooked aspect of animation. It can often breathe more life into even the most well animated scenes but unfortunately alot of tutorials either overlook or barely touch on it. I just came across your channel and im very impressed with how well put this guide is.❤
I just hope i came find a decent video on camera movement in your catalog because i feel like you would do an excellent job at breaking things down in that department.
WE MAKING OUT OF THR ANIMATION STUIOS WITH THIS ONE 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Good posing, good spacing, good timing. It's all I think about when I animate.
the ad is great fr, i want that on spotify
These tutorials about timing and spacing really helped me get an understanding about motion. I got a huge improvement eversince I tried applying it to my own work. Thank you so much!!!!!
Would y mind helping me?
Bro! For real! That's how you do a AD! I've never wanted to purchase something advertised to me more than listening to your Ad! That was dope!
Congratulations on the course, with this you become a reference
I once obsessively studied music and rapping was my life for a long period, I'm extremely impressed with your ability to rap an advertisement and amaze me with your artistic skill at the same time.
STOPPPP the intro is absolutely INSANEEEEE!!!!
You have the best animation tutorial channel I've ever seen, honestly. It's informative and interesting! I really enjoy watching all of your videos.
this is the BEST channel I've seen on animation teaching, and working on principals in CLEAR instruction. SHARE THE LOVE, Look at all his videos yo!
Really great explanation! I've been struggling with timing in my personal animations since graduating college this year. With no professors to critique me anymore, I was having a hard time slowing down a walk cycle. This definitely helps and even reminded me of a few tips my freshman year professor gave when we covered the principles lol
was not expecting a fire in my room this late in the night
"Once I became fully aware on how to manipulate time and space..."
4:41 Thank you so much for your video. It was this part right here 4:41 where it all started to connect😂😂
i'm on 3.19 and you just broke this down quicker than my uni, thank you.
i personally dont like clip studio but i think this is the coolest ad ive seen. Also this video is so good, i knew this but i never knew how to explain it, so this video is nice way to introduce people on animation
I'VE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TIMING CHARTS WORK FOR SO LONG!
THANK YOU!
You must be an all around artist. That beat had me when it stopped I remembered this was a tutorial…. Wow
As a newbie animator, i'm grateful for this video. Thank you.
This is the coolest ad I have ever seen on youtube
I love Sebation's ads; they're amazing
You have incredible talent! To be able to come up with lyrics to that ad, rap it, and animate at the same is incredible. Keep it up, it's awesome man!
That was the best RUclipsr product ad i've ever watched
Your explanation was so well done. You are the first one to talk abt halves and thirds in a spacing video I found here on ytb. Not to mention your explanation was very easy to understand. It didn't feel like a lot of information down my throat but in a very good pacing. Good job
expected to become a better animator, pleasantly surprised by the best ad I've ever seen.
I came here for animation and man, I gotta say that rap intro was incredible. Most definitely a Nujabes feel, and you're incredibly skilled and talented. Thank you for that and the video 🙏
Thank you so much, before this I thought spacing and timing were too complex, but you really simplified it, thank you again 😊
THAT WAS AN AD??? THAT SLAPS.. SO HARD1! 1!!1!❤❤❤
Honestly best ad ever
I really want to use clips art studio ill buy in the future
My man almost won a Source award of the ad. 🔥🔥🔥
Usually during an ad break in videos i watch i’d skip but this is the first time i was jamming out 💃🕺 fr
I like how you make it engaging! :D
I just saw your video and as a Absolute Beginner learning the basics of Animation of Clip Studio Pro, I wanna say thank you my man for giving us the guidance we need to improve and start our animation journey properly as Self Taught Animators! BTW Love your intros Gives me 'SF 3rd Strike' kind of Vibez! ^_^
I had the Oppenheimer light bulb going off seeing this. There was a lot of struggle telling the difference between timing and spacing before I watched this!!
Wow thanks for this. Very informative. And Awesome drawing tablet
bro spit bars for his promotion 💯💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
wow this is actually really helpful - i've never really seen an in-depth video like this about this topic! also the ad was impeccable, why was i actually vibing👌
That rap for the clip studio ad was amazing, idk if anyone mentioned that but amazing job bro. I loved that so much!
Okay. You sold me with the song.
yo this is the most useful video i have seen, i just started animation a day or 2 ago, and i have been trying SO hard to find and learned the things you talked about in this video, i had a huge brain blast when you talked about dividing the frames by each other to get a good slow-fast-slow animation, my brain went "THATS SO SMART", honestly props to you man, great content and will deff keep watching your videos 👍
I'm not an animator, but I still loved watching this.
Bro first time watching and that rap alone made me sub😂
Awesome vid! In general, how do you go about animating, for example, changes on a characters face as they run across the screen? Because you wouldn’t naturally be able to reference key frames if they are both in different places rather than on top of eachother. I tend to just brute force it and I feel that’s not the most efficient way, lol.
It's kind of silly, the other day I was sitting in a VC with my friend and we were watching this behind the scenes sketch animation of movement for hazbin hotel. We saw the time charts and I had no clue what they were, so I asked about it, and my friend didn't know either. This explained it very well, and also came up at a perfect time as I have been starting to learn animation myself.
I have a square I want to move from A to B constantly speeding up and I want the animation to take 24 frames with 24 drawings. I tried using onion skin cutting the way in halves getting close to starting position and It looked good, but was way to fast. It took 9 frames instead of 24. I simply couldn't fit more.
In order to slow down the acceleration i added in beetwens increasing frame count to 17 and further to 24 but when i played it it looked like the speed is rising gradually. Few times step by step. I examined it and here's the result:
distance from A (sample): 10px, 40px, 80px, 160px, 320px, 640px
here the speed is rising constantly. The diffrences are 30px, 40px, 80px, 160px, 320px.
distance from A (sample): 10px, 20px, 40px, 60px, 80px, 120px, 160px, 240px, 320px, 480px, 640px
But after adding in-beetwens The speed rise gradually. The diffrences are 10px, 20px, 20px, 20px, 40px, 40px, 80px, 80px, 160px, 160px and this is after just first "wave" of in-betweening.
I tried placing in beetwens not in the half but a little before half of adjacent frames but the results are that square is randomly speedind up and slowing down before reaching destination.
I also tried cutting in thirds, fours, etc. but even then I can't be sure whether will it take intended 24 frames not mentioning that cutting in thirds, fours, etc. isn't as easy as cutting in halves so I keept thinking of a better way.
There is an option to animate it straight ahead. That way using onion skin i can make sure that the square is constantly speeding up and that it last 24 frames, but I don't know where will it end up in the end so that's not the way
In that scenario how can i control how fast the object is speeding up? Or mabye I am unnecessarily worrying about it to take exacly 24 frames?
Honestly your ad made a very convincing case for me to enjoy rap more.
Why you gotta make that ad go so hard?
This was really good, thank you!
You explained this better than my animation professor thank you
Im currently 14, and when i watched this exact video for the funs of it, i couldn't be more interested.... this is so cool to me that i actually started learning how to animate just because of this video soley, so, thank you :')
this gonna be such a hit in my project bruh
Usually I skip sponsorship ads but THAT WAS FIRE
Favor is a really neat trick, it sorta reminds me of smear but less wacky
im not all that interested in animation, I just wanted to make a simple coin flip. And you were really helpful thank you for sharing
Really well put together lessons and fantastic drawings, thanks!
Hey man, I love your channel. I'm a game composer and sound designer with little to no knowledge on animation terms, and this breakdown was FLAWLESS!!! I'm hiring animators for my game and want to know the language and you are an incredible teacher. 🙏 Thank you sincerely!
P.S. I also love your hiphop ads. Slaps! LOL! Much love Sebastian!
Bro thanks my teacher always complained about the timing on my animations and i didnt know what it is now i get it and my teacher is impressed lol
viejo.....se que probablemente no entiendas mi idioma pero me esta sirviendo bastante esto, gracias
Thanks for the advice at the end to not skip the fundamentals lol I’m currently learning them but with my long day job it’ll take me a good year or 2 or so on everything i want to Learn but I know with fundamental knowledge I won’t get confused near as easy and give up!
this is the best explanation of in-betweens that I've found on RUclips- great work
You just saved me for a little project I am doing! Awesome work and thank youuuuuuu!
Sir, how to maintain consistency in Drawing... Please make a tutorial and show us how to do it... I always struggle on maintaining consistency in the volume and size of the drawing... 🙏🙏🙏
Btw great font it kept me focus on the caption as well as the video seriously great job!
At first, I was confused about how frames worked. How do I know where to start changing motion? Am I supposed to do SO much in just 12/24 frames even though it's just one second? I was so confused and thought it had to deal with math or something lol. But thanks to this vid, I understood about timing and spacing and what to do in these frames, no matter how long the animation is! Thank you NobleFrugal Studio! I know this sounds like an average review on a video or sum, but I wanted to give a honest review that was clear for others LOL
Dude your animation style is soooo good
That run cycle on ones literally made me giggle - you're an incredibly talented animator! Just a few shapes and there's so much life that just... 😂 You've got that magic
noble frugal, personally that rap made my jaw drop
Les go! i love this video, there are not many YT vids out there, that go deep into timing and spacing. Thanks man!
This video was sooooo helpful. I’ve been trying to wrap my mind around this subject and it was presented perfectly here. Running to my desk now to put it into practice. Thank you!
for the first tim ei finally understand how the chart works TT thank you!
bros doin slick when making music 🔥🔥
ok im going to try again with this video. I have been having trouble when trying to animate more complex scenes and i couldnt figure why. I think it's because i need goof timing and spacing. I will go try again. Thanks man
I do 3D animation, I went to a 4 year college and 12 principles of animation is barely mentioned. I know about it but I felt like I never really had time to practice or understand how it really works. I do 3D animation and sure I got feedbacks but I still felt like I was just winging it. Therefore my animations looks so janky and rough in 3D animation. I'll definitely be keeping this video in mind when applying to 3D animation and I'm also getting familiar with using the graph animation systems (in Maya). I'm still learning but I'm getting there. I want to achieve that natural movement feel like seen in Disney/Pixar films, or if it has a stop motion feel, to feel like the Spiderman Mile Morales movie.
what's with the rap intro bro thats actually be hitting hard 😭🔥
probably not relevant to the actual video but i noticed it and hated that i noticed it, but you drew 25 lines instead of 24 when talking about the 24 frames. i counted three times, once by counting 4 at a time, then 3 at a time, then drawing out the numbers under the lines to be sure. AAAAA
anyway just a detail i noticed thats otherwise irrelevant. great video! LOVE how you shaded the character in the thumbnail. and sick rap, damn.
