RoadflyTV - 2011 VW Touareg VR6 Sport Review & Test Drive

- Host Ross Rapoport spent a week in the all-new 2011 Volkswagen Touareg VR6 Sport, a brand new redesigned premium SUV that is as fun to drive as it is comfortable and elegant.
Sharing some design cues with the far-more expensive Porsche Cayenne, the Touareg has flowing lines and a pronounced back-end, making its silhouette look eerily similar to its European cousin. Also for 2011, the Touareg has managed to drop over 400 pounds while increasing its cargo capacity and overall size, a fairly noteworthy improvement over the course of one year.
The Touareg for 2011 comes in several different engine options, including a brand new hybrid option which unfortunately we didn't get to test drive. However, our 3.6L VR6 engine, with 280 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, was more than capable of getting us around town with its ample power and acceleration. Gas mileage is decent considering the engine and the weight, you'll be mustering roughly 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. With the hybrid engine, you'll be getting slightly better numbers: a supercharged V6 with 333 horses and 324 pound feet, with gas mileage coming in at 20/27. Do the math and that extra power and mileage might not be enough to justify the additional $9,000 or so it takes to upgrade to the hybrid engine. And all of the Touaregs come with VW's 4MOTION all-wheel drive system to manage all the twists and turns your commute can throw at you.
Inside, the Touareg is functional and efficient, if a little plain. The execution is user-friendly, with a highly intuitive climate control and navigation system. All in all, the cabin is practical, but doesn't contain any particular cutting-edge technology that you might expect in a SUV at this price. In fact, the Touareg doesn't contain real leather seats, a sunroof, or a third row of seats.
The 2011 Touareg has undergone some very desirable upgrades and changes for this year, and remains a very powerful front-runner in the midsize and luxury SUV segment, giving many of its more expensive competitors in its class a run for their money. Our VR6 Sport Touareg starts off at $45,600 with an as tested price of $46,420.

great short and simple review good job
I absolutely LOVE Ross' reviews. What a brilliant guy!
Another quality review by Ross. Keep it up!
ROSSS!!! awesome review! Way to go man!
awesome review!
Ross, love how you compare the vehicles to others based on common sense. Usually car reviews are pretty anemic when it comes to comparisons. These comparisons are very helpful for people who are looking for honest reviews. Thanks and keep it up.
great review, from a great reviewer.
Ross rocks!!!!
Could you guys do more of a tour of the inside of the cars. I like to see how much space is in the backseat too.
this guy is roadfly's best reviewer
i appreciate you review from Dakar, sénégal !
loooove mine!!!
nice job Ross. I like the coat bruh.
You da man Ross. show'em how it's done.
Love this car so much. Great on snow and ice and huge all around. Graduation gift in tdi form? Hopefully.
is this the same v6 as the standard cayenne?
Touareg are verry powerfull cars...and the aspect is amasing,i love it
EXCELLENT review...I love roadfly because they always offer great insight to the cars that they review.
I love the Touareg, but the reliability is concerning.
The touareg is brilliant, it is very reliable. and besides, they are always improving.
@StuinthaHouse awd, ground clearance, visibility, v6 tdi, and nearly 8,000 lbs towning capacity. Did I miss anything?
Good review. So it it FWD? Anybody know?
i like my 1986 subaru gl
small , lots of room , and had real 4 wheel drive!
Hey Ross, a little bit of the VR6 suspension please, compare it to the Audi Q5 as well as their prices, thanks.
@roadflytv C class is another very reliable model. Still haven't had any issues with mine.
@tahj677 Sorry, I beg to differ. The VR6, 1.4TSI, 2.5L I-5, TSI/FSI, 2.0L I-4 non-turbo (found in Golf Mk.4), 2.8L V6 and 1.9L TDI are (some were) the best engines that VW ever produced. The 1.4 TSI won the engine of the year award, while the same technology, 2.5 Liter-Fünfzylinder-TFSI found in Audi TT also won in the 2.0 to 2.5 liter kategorie. You must take care of your engines for them to take care of you. Oddly enough, most international engines of the year were German. Hmmm...
Respect from Russia!
Here in Europe the Touareg is starting at 53000€ which is about 66.000 $ but we also have the vr6 a 3.0 tdi ,the 3.6 hybrid. But here in Europe you can get a 4.2 V8 tdi with 340 horsepower and 800 NM of torque
you can get them optionally or step up to higher trim levels
Good review. But I'd like to hear more about interior room. I'm 6' 230 lbs, and I don't like squeezing into cars. I drive a Matrix for work, and I can practically drive from the back seat!
Why doesn't it have a V8 option? What if someone wants to do some towing?
@Buttnut105 I think it has 4.2 liter V8 option :p At least here in Finland.
@hubbytweaked the r is not for diesel or gasoline, the r is for stretch angle about 15 degrees v5 or v6, a normal v6 like this is about 45 to 90 degrees, vr5 or vr6 engines are no longer in production. capice
I've never really liked the German cars, but ambitious VW seems to be a perfect alternative to the Japanese dominated US market
I miss the wood accents of the old one :(
@hubbytweaked no its not. were do you see in the touareg any vr6 word? it saids v6 all over it.
@gadgetguy4000 I don't mean to sound condescending but how do you know? I'd learn a little more about the new Touareg.
2:13 a cup holder that actually holds cups xd
review the 2011 ford explorer
Do these cars brake down all the time ????
you should review a
porsche carrera gt
does anyone know 0 to 60 mph ?
"....and cup holders that actually hold cups."haha
Cool car
I think the reason why it doesn't have a third row seat is that the trunk is too small to fit it ..
@OneOfaKind949 AWD with rear bias.
@MrTraxxas123 reliable?...where do you get that?...toureg is on the bottom of the list in terms of reliability
Ross you that nigga man... Another great review! Keep up the work.
The newer Touaregs look better than the Cayenne
paulscape72 true
Starting what year ?
actually Porsches engine is 3.0 L while this Touareg which I own is 3.6L
vw's market strategy is to compete with toyota with the new passat and jetta yet compete with bmw with the touraeg and eos. i dont see how moving downmarket is going to help the latter
@leeh0795 That's good though .. Weight is a pro in safety.
@etoyotarockshsucks It does sound inconvenient but look at it this way, most people use mp3 players like Ipods so the disc changer in the back wouldn't bother most people. Instead of using the space up front for a disc changer, I'd be happy with extra storage instead.
WOW FOR THE NEW GEN TOUREG THEY DIDN'T MAKE THE V-8 FOR 2011 THAT'S A BUMMER MAYBE FOR THE CONSIDERATION FOR THE NEW ECO-FRIENDLY CAMPAIGN THEY JUST WENT ALONG WITH THE CROWD!!!!!
@gadgetguy4000 Oh nice thanks.
@awesomejpg It definitely does in Europe but, like always, the U.S. gets the shorter end of the stick. European cars always have better and just more engine options over by you.
Well, diesel is a lot more expensive then regular gas. But as the gas prices higher then it is better to go with diesel.
Yes, but the engine in the cayenne has more power and torque.
@tahj677 Lets not forget this 2011 is a brand new model so there is no reliability information on it at all, so assuming this is at the bottom is pure speculation.. On top of that if you look at JD powers reliability chart they just released, the best and worst models for reliability have a difference of 1 problem per vehicle that is a tiny margin hardly worth mentioning.
I much prefer the VW to the Porsche on all fronts.
it's says VR6 on the outside, but it says V6 on the engine cover...WTF?!
the VW starts at 45 270 w 280 hp
the Porsche starts at 48 675 w 300 hp
why you said is a vr6? the engine is a v6 no r
Is this guy 4 feet tall?
46.000 DOLLAR!!!?? WTF... in Germany the exact same car is way over 70.000... DAMNIT!
In Denmark. Starts the price at €140000.
@stanbernadino yea, sure, that's why toyota, honda and vw are the companies with most sales in america except for ford f 150, and you are maybe from mississippi.
@lupowins He makes the SUV look like a rig for crying out loud. hahaha. It must have been the angle of the shot..
Your either really small or that car is hugee!!! Like massively huge! Haha look at the last shot! :p
Either this SUV is really big or this guy is a miniature person.
I love so many things about this suv but no sunroof and real leather? Come on VW.
@hubbytweaked i do not need to check the the us web site, they use the r for sales, they mix the old engine stretch angle definition with the new r definition of sport, so you can said touareg r but when they call vr6 to the big block v6 they lie to you in order of greater sales, because for most ignorant people a vr6 is more special than a normal v6 so is not a technical factory definition is a us only marketing lie.
why would anyone pay for the hybrid? at 60 grand and only 24 mpg it doesn't make any sense, TDI with 28 mpg and starting at 47 grand= best choice.
Don't see a massive benefit of putting a petrol in a 4x4, the torque from a diesel is much better and would get better mpg :)
you may not have noticed, but cars BUILT IN GERMANY are full of quality, the touareg is a great car, but it is built in slovakia.
@chap8938 I couldn't DISagree with you more on that one. I think it's pretty well recognised in the car industry that VW/Audi make by far the classiest interiors... you're entitled to your own opinion of course. But I think you're in the minority on this one. Cheers.
here in france german cars are the most reliable cars , im really sursprised u say they r in the bottom of reliability
Get rid of that cape you Wizard!
This car has awesome crash ratings but is near the bottom on reliability.
I'd rather take the Touareg anyday
yeah ya got me on the unreliability part to with german cars they have u.s beat by a million miles thats why the new reagal is engineered in germany for their suspension and handling engineering!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@stanbernadino are you telling me that fox news are not impartial? and that's just one. about buicks you brought it up you told me your car is better than mine, i'm just responding a juvenile comment with another one. peace
that door handle came from an audi!
@tahj677 german quality:)
@saenzlopez truue , german cars offer so many things , american cars dont even come close , german cars r cheaper in america than here in europe
diesel touareg s wicked
Why not just buy a Jetta TDI Wagon?
Same number of seats, nearly the same cargo capacity and far better fuel economy.
@toyota4runner1000 dude, how is this thing ugly?? i love it :DD VW FTW
It's funny caz he called it a baby porche when a REAL porche is half it's size
and can pull a 747
@roadflytv german cars are never near the bottom for reliability. where did you get that?. one thing i could imagine is that germans and people who drive german cars care more about their vehicles and therfore they spend more time at the auto repair shop. my car is twice a year at the autoshop. and if anything isn't perfect anymore i let it repair. nevertheless my car could run 10 year without a big problem.
because it is faster
Ok,, right all ready ... you've said 3-times that it costs less then the Porsche . "I get It" ?
$47,000 and it doesn't have a sunroof or leather? Next.
hahahahahahahahahahaahaha :D
@saenzlopez The American media is far from impartial, I don't know what you're talking about. And on the whole American cars are selling as well as Japanese manufacturers and better than German ones. I brought up Iraq as an example, not a political argument. I don't agree with it either. And you don't know what you're talking about in regards to Buick.
WHAT THE HELL?! no sunroof? what a joke
RAV4 is a lot smaller and a lot worse interior
This was a stupid comparison for a V6 Touareg against a V8 Cayenne. Why not test against the V6 Cayenne? Surely far more meaningful.
Is this a video trick or is this guy a pygmy?
R U still alive? That's my comment. Couldn't come up with anything else. Everyone else in this comment section is probably dead by now. So why not ask?
bigger fatter more expensive. sounds like a winner.
Suv's are for gluttons.
When you are too fat to fit in a car
