This was the best vid I have found to test a MAF. I followed all the steps, identified all the wires, got the earth pinned then found the 5V wire. While running the MAF came up from .01V to .05V but no more. Diagnose bad MAF, now I can purchase a replacement confident that I am not just replacing good parts with new parts.
Just replace the sensor after 50 k miles. It's easier to unscrew the two screws and unplug the clip lol. If your car dies when starting it, slow and sluggish when accelerating, or has trouble shifting just replace this sensor folks! It's the brain between the transmission and motor. It's worth the money just do it lol! You're technically supposed to clean your mass air flow sensor and replace the air filter every 15k miles. Those sensors are super sensitive and are easily damaged. I replace the mass air flow sensors on my 4 vehicles every 40k miles! Change the plugs every 50k miles as well! Basic maintenance brings longevity folks! Much love peace!!!!!!
Perfect video. Got right to the information. Most straightforward car repair video I’ve ever seen. I wish everything on youtube was this straight forward.
This is by far the most simple video to understand!!!!!
Thank you so much i plan to test mine in the next 5 minutes
I checked lots of vlogs ,but your one is the best! Thanks man👍
Thanks for te video. Basic and straightforward. Very helpful!
Than you Sir for the info. This remind me of how we used to test fuel level gauges in cars using analogue multi meters ..cheers
very nicely explained very clear . Thank you . I wish we had youtube in my younger years i would have learnt much more ,
younger people don't know how lucky they are. Some people give bad comments they are a pain in the bum they are sad people.
+Saleem Kader too true, id be king of the world if i had the RUclips and internet in my youth. i read encyclopedias and dictionaries for all my info..
Great video. Careful you don't short between 0v and 12v when you put the pins in. Risk blowing a fuse (minimum)!
I LOVE ALL YOU GUYS who make these great videos. you're all going to heaven!
Great video! However, a MAF sensor may still work but not perfectly. This is a good overall test if the MAF sensor for your car is quite expensive and one should always try to test the MAF sensor before replacing the sensor.
Most licensed professional mechanics cannot diagnose car problems today either and what ends up happening is they just replace everything possible and foot the bill to the customer.
If people want a car that they can maintain themselves, buy something made around 2000 ~ 2005 as vehicles made during this time had a computer just to control ONLY the engine and transmission. After 2005 car manufacturers integrated sensors into everything electrical they could think of, making it a nightmare to diagnose and find the exact problem.
at least he tried.... well done mate! computer translate makes no odds to me!
Thanks for sharing this to us, it's very useful!
Your video is excellent, direct and to the point, good camera work and explanation. Do not pay any attention to anyone that criticizes your audio. They are idiots.
Good job. Thanks for the post.
Thanks for the info!
Very great video and very helpful. Thank you and thumbs up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great video mate
Short and sweet, many thanks for sharing.
Thanks for share your knowledge with us.
Very helpfull. the other comments are just people picking the guys video apart. very helpfull
I'm still learning
@@carlosrayalam2111 Hello
rockin the auto tune bro!
thanks for your sharing👍
Attention: this video is ONLY for --analog-- MAFs;
DIGITAL MAFs output a *frequency* ,not a voltage; you'll need a scope or at least a multimeter with Hz,Hertz.
Thanks for the video.
Great video
Very good test ..real easy .thanks..
i have a question please , I have a 93 mustang 5.0 and Im seeing 13 volts on the signal in and out wires its a brand new pro M WHat could be causing such high readings??? I know I should only be seeing 5 at max!!!
Helpful have a check engine light I think this is the cause !!
Thanks
Thank you sir !!
Very very nice u are great sir
Thanks a lot!!!
very very helpfull
thank's a lot very help full.......
EXCELLENT!
its a good video!
Thanks much very good video
good job,,,thanks..
my truck died while driving, is there a way to test this with engine off ? i was getting mas error code b4 it died ? its not getting fuel, tries to start when spraying starter fluid into intake. tried cleaning it, but no difference, it just might be dead, but would the mas keep your engine from starting ? i have a 2007 toyo tacoma 4.0 4x4
I have this problem 07 tundra, replaced both the MAS and the ignition coil. Still doing it randomly. If I disconnect the battery and reconnect it starts normally for a while. Any tips will be appreciated.
thanks a lot
How do you rate your multimeter. I'm thinking of getting one like it but I haven't seen much reviews.
So perfect I’ll try this
The MAF sensor has a voltage range that it performs in, so if the MAF sensor is not performing in the manufacturer's range then it will bot work properly.
Dang bro you nailed it 🎉
good video
Very good
I’m still having a trouble accelerating after I replaced the old one also did a 93 fuel treatment on my 1994 ford ranger idk does the computer have to recognize it or wat it actually got worse with the new one
can u still have a bad mas sensor if u test the mas sensor by pulling the plug and the cars dies..?
now i understand the maf sensor but i have one question is if the pcm give that maf sensor 5 volt to function it and the sensor it self resend voltage to the pcm by ground wire ( what the function of 12 volt wire?? ) sorry for that question but im still beginner and English is not my native language
good job.......
Just don't let the needle nose touch the 2 nails simultaneously with the key on.
Adios maf and a few other fun replacements
very good
Great informative video sir 👍 👍 👍 great work sir 👍 👍 👍 best regards for the future videos sir 👍 👍 👍
I have lexus is220d 2009 I was tested mass air flow sensor.I did have ignition on but engine was not runing. now I tried to stare the engine to testing the sensor again. engine doesn't over but engine was working before.
What do you do if you can't back-probe, weather proof connector ?
My Frontier only as three wires on the MAF will the test work the same way .
I have p0113 and p0102. I replaced Maf sensor and reset code. Two days later I got the same code again. Advice Please.
Got my mass air flow sensor from vehiclevaluepart's website. This video helped me realize it went bad. I ordered mine and got it in the same week. Oh and it was the best price I could find.
Mobile Matt Nobody cares where you got your maf, how much you paid for it, how fast it arrived or if you got rebate. This is not a shopping site. We don't even know what car you own, what engine, on what continent or country you live in.
Rude.. And I was just giving my experience.
Mobile Matt
Rude or not you just gave us your experience with some random online seller, nothing to do with maf, testing, symptoms of it going bad etc...
Mohammad Mezher I'm just a little annoyed by people (mostly American's that assume that only Americans have access to internet) that just comment on where they purchased something online and how fast it arrived.
Petar Maksimovic Dude he got a new maf after diagnosing the issue after watching this video lol I too have just done the same but I got a secondhand one from a friend.
How are you gentlemen... All your MAF are belong to us....
Did it matter that chkg the 3rd wire the demonstrator had the leads crossed?
That is the debitmeter , the mag senzor is in other place! 🤣🤣🤣
Sounds good but how do you accelerate whilst in the hood ?
My rpm ticks over between 800 and 1000 is this normal for a 1.9 golf tdi
Are those pins making any difference?
One day robot voices will either be a thing or extinct
I cannot remove my Spencer on 2007chevy ave o because the antifreeze lines are in the way so I guess I will drive until it stops
Very helpful but have to understand the numbers to know if it sending the right signals.. because it's it bad then the reading is going to be low..
Thanku sir
I like it
My car is still hesitating during acceleration at slow speeds after replacing maf sensor n spark plugs. Pl advise
Have fuel pump tested, replace fuel filter. That's a start.
WOW! Thanks for this video...I'm new to all this stuff. I'm learning....Thanks again. I'd like to know symptoms of problems to help with diagnosing
Saya punya mersi 7 g tronic e280 th 2007 kalo dikontak van nya nyala dispeed tinggi cara mengatasinya bagaimana
My car is Sonata 2009, American import, engine 24. It has a malfunction. When the rpm reaches 1500 revolutions, the engine shakes, whether it is moving or standing, and results in a weak engine torque.. I went to the technician more than once and he connected it to a fault detector, but to no avail without any result. .. so what is the solution?
Does maf comes for petrol engines?
Thanks for making a video, but you might have wanted to point out that this only works with MAF sensors that vary voltage on their output, where most will vary the frequency. The latter you would need an oscilloscope to get a useable reading.
So, it would be difficult to know which type you have which would negate the useability of this testing method. My particular MAF sensor varied frequency, and so it just had a constant 2.8v that didn't vary with rpm. The new one was an non-varying 3.1v. Thankfully the new one did fix my problem, but the testing method didn't work in my case.
I think the frequency scale can work in case of latter MAF sensor
CAUTION.....first video I found said to clean with carb cleaner, I did and ruined the MAF.....I later learned that you should only use a cleaner made for MAF sensor cleaning. Any other cleaner can at the least leave a residue, and at worst remove the teflon coating on the MAF....this is a very sensitive sensor.....just my experience....all parts stores carry the MAF cleaner, and just as cheap as carb or brake cleaner, so why not use the one that is designed to do the job, rather than take a chance. Hey other cleaners may work on some MAF sensors...they all do the same job, but are designed and made with different materials....not worth taking a chance using anything other than a cleaner made specifically for cleaning MAF sensor
Dennis Arterburn yep me too carb cleaner destroys this and the MAP Sensors.
u need a circuit cleaner spray can
MAF cleaner is the most expensive of the lot
Use Zep mass air flow cleaner or if you don't have thar use rubbing alcohol. That's all I use. Alcohol doesn't leave a residue so you can use it if you can get it spraying in a jet stream.
Wd40 makes an ELECTRIC PRTS CLEANER, it works very well.dries in seconds, and won't harm plastics surrounding the parts.
Nice video. I am curious as to how the audio was produced. Was it a computer generated translation? Saying "earth" instead of "ground" makes me think so.
The holes in my wiring harness are too tight to accommodate a nail, or even a paper clip - the ends are too blunt to get in next to the wire. I had to use sewing pins, which are kind of T-shaped. They're sturdy, yet you can bend them if you want to move them away from each other once the pin end is inserted. I imagine pulled-open safety pins would work, too, or even straight pins.
Earth is British English. The USA uses ground.
very good-traslation is extra
hello...how to cheak mass air flow if engine have problem ignition missfire?
So if its not making 12 volts does that mean it's a bad maf
What should be the output voltage of the air flow meter at idle
This seems to be analog MAF. This trick would not work on digital one. Am I right?
I was testing my MAF sensor on my ‘99 tacoma which the sensor has 6 pins and when I inserted the needle in one of the cables the truck shut off and now it doesn’t start, it cranks but it doesn’t go on, can you guide me on what to do?
What was the result... i might have just done the same thing just now...was it ecm?
Good
Gereat
It doesn't mean good when the voltmeter read a change when accelerating.. it must be in the range of voltage of the manufacturer to be sure the MAF works good. my MAF reads change when accelerating but not in the range of owner manual and the car still getting noise on run.
Why did you place the positive lead on the black wire when you tested the first of the remaining two wires (during the 2nd stage where you received 0.00)? You specifically said to use the positive lead on the remaining two.
+dieselstar5 it doesn't matter which way you test it. We are measuring potential difference so it would only change the sign. The number part would stay the same.
Mike that's what I said hahahaaaaa
Can I replace with aftermarket maf sensor?
my car doesnt start so how can i do the end of the test ?
hi ! i try this on my 200sx and give me 1.20 on relanti and acelarating go up 1.60 1.80 at 3 000 rpm and 4000 rpm! is normal?
MAF sensor can be dirty
yeah... hard to do this test when my car wont stay running with a maf connected 😬😬😬 its a new maf too
tanx
why holding Red multimeter on the Black wire on the 3rd time ?
what if it isn't working properly, what are the readings then?
Hi
Iv got a Fiat 128 Rally 1974
My starter keep on cranking and not start at all, i had to pul battery wire to stop it.
After days of strangle i find that the points plastic on it melt little and touching the earth.
After fixed the points starter stop keep on cranking. And car starts 100%
Thing that confuse me totaly.
How can points that touch earth like my car did. Let the starter keep on cranking. How is that possible???
My coil got 3 wires on.
1. Ignition wire to +
2. Wire to points on -
3. Wire also on - (this wire i got no idee where it goes)
Realy realy hope you can give me the answer on this. 😁😁😁
The condencor is connected to the wire that go to the points. Condencer is skrewed on the casing of distributor.
The extra wire on the negative on coil go down with the ignition wire.
So there is 2 wires on negative of coil. One go to points and condenser other one go down with ignition wire. Not to condenser or distributor.
I mean its comfusing. Just after i fix points that got short to earth permantly. Starter stop keep cranking and got spark (there was no spark) and car start 100%
I keep on thinking that the extra wire on coil negative side got something to do with starter keep cranking.
That extra wire make my mind spin. 🤔🤔🤔😃
O yes... Took of the ignition wire from starter and connect a wire straight to starter and stil keep cranking. So it were not ignition switch. 👍😁
Connecting a OBDII scanner to your car on live data will guide you to each different parts functions including the mass air flow sensor
This may tell if MAF is outright defective. But a MAF's are precision calibrated electronics so scan data is needed to determine if it's actually in spec.
Do you test with car on or off?
You should never ever probe wires like that, just leaving them open to the elements and corrosion. Seals and insulators are there for a reason.
do it like this on a daily basis for 20 years now... never had one problem.
yes that the only way i ever see it done using pins....
Probing a wire like that does nothing more to expose it to corrosion and elements any more then it already is knuckle head. That's why on every car there is this fancy thing called a hood, to protect it from that. Should proper care be taken so you do not damage the pins on the harness? Yes, but they are actually quite reiselient. Some people will say you shouldn't probe wires because it can change the circuit and mess up the cars sensitive computer components, and while this may have been the occasional rare case with older analog type voltmeters with low internal resistance around 16k , with much newer digital multimeters having a high internal resistance of upwards of 10M ohms or some high end multimeters have near infinity internal resistance, these will have little to no effect on the functioning of the circuit.
How to maf sensor kia carnival 2001??
