Way back in the late 80's probably, a friend did run out of gas a couple miles away from civilization but had a gallon of this Coleman fuel on him to get him back to a gas station. He said it ran strange with bucking etc., but it made it. It was probably a 1976 era Jeep Cherokee. Thanks for the great videos!

Glad to see you try this one! I have a quick anecdote about Coleman Fuel/White Gas in a larger scale motor. I was out camping with the scouts about 20-25 years ago, and we were on our way back home in my dad's trusty '87 E150 van with a stock carburated 302. The van started running really rough, and eventually died. My dad correctly determined that the motor wasn't getting gas (he initially thought the fuel pump or pickup had died in the front tank). We removed the engine cover from inside the cabin, exposing the back half of the engine. He took off the Air Filter, and had me dribble white gas down the carb throat while cranking the engine, and we were able to limp the van down the road a few miles to a gas station. The rest of the kids in the back thought we were some kind of mad scientists/geniuses for being able to do that, which was kind of cool. The motor definitely didn't like it (or maybe it didn't like that we were pouring a thin stream of liquid gas down the throat!) because it pinged like mad the whole way. My dad later confessed that he was worried about it coming apart, and then having a MUCH bigger issue on the side of the road with 5 scouts in the back. After getting everyone home safe & sound, It turned out that the fuel tank selector switch had gone bad, so when you changed to the front tank, it didn't let any gas at all get to the engine.
    Keep up the great videos!

About 30 yrs ago, came back from mine and my buddies annual camping trip on the AT one summer. Was gonna stop and get gas on the way back to town after going home. Got home and a msg on the answering machine asking me to come in to work about 30 minutes from the present time. Sooo, didnt unload my little Subaru sedan, full of 2 weeks worth of gear. Headed to town and in the hustle forgot gas. Over on the side of the road I found the only thing I had to carry gas in was a full coleman can, pour it on the ground and hoof it or pour it in the tank. So I drove the 2 miles on coleman fuel with no problem. Could have went to town and back in that car on that. An 86 model that got 37 mpg.

Project Farm very cool video. You have an interesting channel, as such I have subscribed, keep up with the great videos and have a great day. Oh, a suggestion....not sure if you have already done this, but I imagine with all the motor heads out there you may have done, anyway....nitrous oxide + different fuel mixes? Might be interesting, but destructive to a motor, especially with the heat and pressure. Just thought you might be able to use a fuel that hasn't worked out so well in the past with such a strong oxidising agent....maybe?

Still working hard despite being sick, thanks for toughing it out to bring us more of your content. I'd still like to see a lubrication test of an engine run on "personal lubricant" to see how it would hold up. Being water-based I'd imagine it would evaporate quickly once the engine warms up and would eventually seize but it would be interesting to see how it holds up.

Alkanes (saturated hydrocarbons) by number of Carbon atoms contained within them:
    C1. Methane
    C2. Ethane
    C3. Propane
    C4. Butane
    C5. Pentane
    C6. Hexane
C7. Heptane - n-Heptane is used as the "0" point in the Octane rating standard.
C8. Octane - This is where "Octane rating" comes from, but they actually use 2,2,4-Trimethylpentane (an isomer of n-Octane) to derive the 100 Octane rating. n-Octane has a crap Octane rating because it's a long, flappy molecule rather than a tightly bundled molecule like 2,2,4-Trimethylpentane.
    C9. Nonane
    C10. Decane
    C11. Undecane
    C12. Dodecane
    C13. Tridecane
    C14. Tetradecane
    C15. Pentadecane
C16. Hexadecane (a.k.a. Cetane) - This is where "Cetane number" comes from with respect to the diesel fuel rating.
You get the idea. It keeps going on until very high numbers!
Hope you get well soon. Take it easy man.

Vee Cee I got stuck in outer space one time and had some hydrogen peroxide and potatoes on hand. I sliced the potatoes which act as a catalyst in the decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide. I put the potatoes and hydrogen peroxide in a water bottle, screwed the cap down, drilled a hole in the cap big enough to put an air hose into, and used it as a thruster which created enough force to slowly push me back into orbit where I eventually ended up in free fall for about 18 minutes and landed safely in a stack of hay. Really good demo. I respect that you are so into your engine science that you 'went out and bought a generator' for this! That generator sure starts readily and sounds good.
For my work, I commission and troubleshoot Caterpillar diesel and natural gas powered generators for the oil and gas industry. Ours are 'small' if they are less than 1 MW (1000 kilowatts) LOL!
I expected the Coleman white gas fuel would be fine for these engines. It is actually very similar to the original gasoline formulations back in the early days. The compression ratio is low enough that the octane rating would not be an issue.
It would be a good comparison to see if the Coleman fuel provided a longer or shorter run time per tank than gasoline (with same load). Also would be interesting to see what the frequency was with each fuel, as well as the actual throttle plate angle. These factors will tell you exactly how close the engine is to "giving all it has." With the natural gas (spark ignited) engines I work on, the control system will warn you if the throttle plate gets too far open, since this signifies the engine is taking in all the air/fuel it can and is not able to keep up with the load demand.
Hope your voice recovers soon. :)

@@davidparsons9167 , just dry ..........we used to put aviation fuel in our motorcycles as they ran stronger when racing . But then we were known to dissolve moth flakes in a glass jug before adding it to the tank to boost octane too . In each case we added MMO though to keep things ' wet ' . Used naphtha fuel in some old model planes which never gave any problems back in the day . Understand some of those ' 3rd world countries ' frequently in the news nowadays are experimenting with naphtha as an alternate fuel as it burns so much cleaner plus is a lot cheaper to manufacture . Imagine no multi million dollar computerized control systems or pee in a tank too get emissions down . Could that be possible ? ? ? ? ? LOL ! Those planes were back in the day before 'remote ' and were flown with control lines attached to the plane . Guess this means we were ahead of our time ? ? ? LOL ! Probably not . I'm so old I don't need something to be complicated to work better myself so more power to them . Course I till have a '86' 4 runner that has on numerous occasions been the go to vehicle when the other 3 vehicles ( $210,000 ) worth of modern crap won't run . Was higher but I got rid of the GMC Denali when the engine self destructed due to a DOD efficiency designed failure . . . . .went belly up . I bought a V8 because I needed a V8 and if I'd wanted six cyl. or four cyl . I'd have bought one . As far as saving gas goes a few miles per gallon would have been welcome when the engine costs around $5000.00 . Then it failed miles from home . . . .transport, and replacement labor, rental and hotel room costs . . . . . . Didn't see any savings to my way of thinking . Will never own another GM vehicle as I thought that idiocy ended when it was a failure on Cadillacs back in the early eighties . E85 has a 9:85:1 stoch rating compared to 14:1 for gasoline and that means gasoline with no Ethanol “Lol e10 is very common out west and why people like me hate their ass 91” regardless without the proper tuning the engine will run like ass and very rich but e85 is also corrosive and burns 700° colder

    • @GoGoggansGo

Seinfeld4029 1) e85 doesn’t burn completely on cold starts and as a result the vehicle will run like ass and on my coyote 2014 Mustang gt it will idle surge as a result, further more since the fuel isn’t burning completely it goes past the oil rings and contaminates the oil. This is why guys like me do a wot pull a day to burn off any fuel in the oil and do early oil changes
      2) e85 is 105-108 octane it will run very very good with high compression

Do you remember White Gas pump at the little marinas at small fishing lakes? I think it was actually early unleaded gas, since lead would clog tiny holes in mantle lanterns, and I think it would gum up some outboard motors, the type you didn't mix gas and oil like a 2-cycle. Hell I'm old enough for the adopt-a tombstone program!!!

Hi Commander and I vote YES! When a product called Tru-fuel came out which is a non-ethanol based 2 and 4-cycle canned fuel a buddy of mine said it smelled like Coleman stove gas with synthetic 2-cycle oil added. Runs about $7 a quart here. Hope all is well and my Coleman's run just as good off of hi-test pump gas as the Coleman stuff. One is a 'dual-fuel' that says it'll run off either and folks here used to run Amaco unleaded gas for camping stuff fuel for years.

Years ago when the Saw Surgeon was running the saw shop before he got his own, his yearly Stihl recertification course instructor said that pump gas had a 90 day shelf life before it started breaking down Coleman or Tru-fuel has an unopened shelf life of 3 years and opened life of 2. Jason, I don't know what additives pump gas has compared to Coleman fuel. I have a camp stove of theirs that's labeled a 'duel fuel' job. I know Amoco white gas was used in everything years ago so seeing that everything is unleaded now, it ought to work. I'll use it if the need arises in a second but I'd use Hi-test. Gas is nothing like it used to be.

From early 1960's through 1975, I spent summers camping with my parents. We camped cross country twice back then. My job was to clean & refuel all Coleman lanterns & stove during the day. And replace lantern mantles as needed. We would drive to the local American Oil Company gas station (now called Amoco) to fill our fuel cans with premium fuel commonly referred to as white gas. It was crystal clear fuel, no color at all. It's octane rating was 102. It was the most expensive fuel you could buy for your car at gas stations. That 102 octane performed rather well. If it was a day or 2 before payday, you might buy a couple bucks of the cheap stuff (96 octane). Yes, the engine performed very well on white gas & the spark plugs were clean when you pulled them. We only paid between 40-50 cents per gallon back then. Oh, I recall those days so well. Wishing I still had my 66 Chevelle with a 396/325 & 4 barrel carb. Now, if you wanted the maximum performance you could get from a gas can, you went to the local "air field" and bought 120 octane aviation fuel. A couple 5 gal cans of 120 octane & you were ready for a Friday evening at the local straightaway. Flip the air cleaner cover over (upside down) so your engine can suck the air straight into the filter. Retard your timing back close to zero and you were ready. My brother would take the air filter assembly completely off his car. When he pulled a hole shot, his engine would suck some of the fiberglass packing from under the hood & blow flames out the exhaust. Oh, you got flames & you've got everyone's attention. You kids today have no clue what you missed.
And yes, the engine ran better on Coleman fuel. And even better on Amoco Premium. But a 50/50 mix of American Oil Co White Gas and aviation fuel delivered the best performance. And we used to wonder why our engines didn't last more than 60,000 miles back then. The price of having fun.
From my experience, lawn mower engines ran only a little better on Coleman fuel or white gas. The lower compression of those flathead engines didn't offer much performance increase. The compression had to be kept low, so you could pull the recoil starter to start the engine.

Why do you think that? Is the shelf life of vodka-ethanol and water-shorter than two years?
If the ethanol-gasoline mixture is kept sealed, it will be stable for at least two years.
The “unstable” components are olefins-present in nearly all gasoline’s.

I believe that because of my research and my own personal experiences. Here is just a small bit of my research that I came across:
"Ethanol-blended gas lasts up to three months.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, most gasoline sold in the U.S. is “E10” gas made of 90 percent petroleum-based gas and 10 percent ethanol (ethyl alcohol). Ethanol-blended gas usually has a shelf life of up to three months because of the high speed at which ethanol oxidizes. Because ethanol is hydrophilic (a.k.a., water-loving), it will also readily absorb any water or humidity in a sealed container resulting from condensation, causing both moisture contamination of the fuel and the eventual separation of the fuel into distinct gas and ethanol layers. Generally, the higher the ethanol content in the gas, the shorter its shelf life, so E15 (15 percent ethanol content), E20 (20 percent ethanol), or E85 (85 percent ethanol) gas will expire sooner than E10 gas will."

Yes it will. I've done it. Ran out of gas on my way home from a hunting trip. But had almost 2 gallons of white gas. Got me to the gas station. Drove that rig for many years after.

Ever heard of the TFA class in Drag Racine? Top Fuel Alcohol. Ethanol has been used for years in (off-road) racing engines. ;-) It's extremely dangerous! It burns with a blue flame that you cannot see! People have been seriously burned and never even knew they were on fire until the pain started. So no @Project Farm, not a good idea.

He used what was left of the Colman fuel to get to the gas station. (Probably 5 mi or so.)
Up and down small hills. Very little power, lots of knocking, but he got there. No apparent damage and had the car for a few more years.

Coleman fuel is one of my recommendations, I knew it would be up there with gasoline. It's a far side cleaner than pump gas. It also does not have the toxic aromatics that are used as cheap octane improvers by oil companies like toluene, (paint thinner) xylene, (paint thinner) benzene, (a toxic carcinogen) and mesitylene (another nasty piece of work) especially with high octane pump gasoline and avgas.
Coleman fuel mixed with ethanol is an outstanding fuel, we've tried it and it is virtually odorless, it's even cleaner again.
Keep up the good work with these videos, I like no BS unbiased experiments and tests.
    Good stuff.

@Project Farm I noticed that you sounded sick and I was concerned, then I realized that the video was more than two years old and I was relieved. Good video I used Colman fuel once in my 1971 Plymouth Fury 3. I was on a camping trip and left my car in the woods for ten days and someone stole most of my gas. The Coleman fuel got me (just) to a gas station. I've wondered if a modern car would have a problem with it, I don't think it would.

I really like how this channel is getting better and better. Now you clean the engines, show the spark plug, and now you use a generator to test an engine under load (I really like that idea, as it's likely much more consistent than using the engine brake, which isn't even designed for that). Keep up the good work

My father and I did the exact opposite for years. when we took the scouts camping instead of purchasing Coleman fuel we just purchased regular unleaded fuel which had just come on the market at the time. That's what we put in our lanterns, in our cook stoves, everything else like our tent heater etc.

  • @dancingwithczars

Ran out of gas in my scooter when I was a kid... Coleman fuel worked in a pinch. Gasoline will last significantly longer sealed in an airtight metal container. Oxygen and moisture are two of the big culprits when it comes to bad fuel. Gasoline should never be stored in plastic for long periods of time. The lighter ends of the fuel leach out through the plastic. This can be seen clearly noting the fuel level month to month. Thanks for the great tests and videos.

We ended up running out of gas. My dad poured 2 gallons of Coleman fuel in the tank and we drove to the next open gas station. I remember the car was pinging a lot so we drove slower than normal to the gas station. Coleman fuel will work in an emergency. BTW great channel!

Unlike most of your videos I knew the answer this time. Sept 1996 NC was hit by Hurricane Fran and the eastern half of the state had no electrical power from the coast all the way to Greenville. I owned a Suzuki Samurai at the time and used up most of the fuel I had in it trying to get to a place with no trees. Where I lived outside of Raleigh the loblolly pines were everywhere and that night was snapping like match sticks. The next morning I was almost on E and had no idea how far I would have to drive to find electricity. I remember as a boy my dad telling me I could use it in a pinch. Well this was just that pinch. I dumped my 2 gallons into the tank and headed west. That little 4 banger knocked and pinged the whole trip but it got me to civilization where I could buy gas. I don't recall who had the longest lines though...the gas station or the McDonald's next door. Love your vids man.

A buddy of mine ran out of gas one time and we used the white gas I had in my truck for my camp stove to get him to the gas station right down the road. As said in the video, I wouldn't use it long term but it does work in a pinch. Same thing goes for running gasoline in a white gas stove or lantern. It can be done, however it burns dirtier and can leave deposits and clog up your equipment faster. I have also heard of using a still of sorts to make white gas from gasoline, which would be much cheaper than buying it in a can.

This was an interesting turn out... didn’t expect it to be that close. Still look forward to the slo-mo and ambient tunes ; ) just adds a bit of wonder to the mundane. One of the more beautiful burns I’ve seen.
I thought of a few notes as a viewer:
    • I was about to suggest ways you could make the lawnmower a more repeatable/measurable load test, by adding a constant load with your bearing tester. Or maybe even a beam/dial torque wrench and a weight. However, a new friend arrives! ...and has built-in repeatable constant load testing sockets!
    • Now, for measuring the generator, I’m wondering if an rpm reader would be a beneficial tool in comparing fuels and evaluating their effect on the engine power output, under load?
    • At the end of the lawn mower run, you showed how long the fuel lasted... I realize repeating this with accuracy would be difficult and add numerous steps, like specific load, and duration, fuel amount, etc. However, it would be helpful to compare that time with other fuels, and interesting to see where Coleman falls in the stack.
O, outside of throwing a still frame up [which has turned into an ordeal for me in some of my editing] a link in the DB or a pinned comment is useful for us fone viewers that can’t tell what the adapter you were holding looks like, or whether similar things of a similar size at a similar camera angle would be a useful add for a similar toolbox.
Man, thank you for taking the time and effort to put these together, and helping us infrequent commenters feel like we can make a difference.

I worked for a chemical company some years ago. A tanker would come in and unload part of his load, and then deliver the rest to Coleman. What he delivered to them was VM&P ("Varnish Makers & Painters") naphtha. I was told by the driver that they would fill the cans with it, and nothing else. Also, made great cigarette lighter fluid.

I was riding my motorcycle across country from San Diego to Tampa in 1973 (after I got out of US Navy). I ran out of gas in N Florida, 200 miles away from home. A nice couple in an RV stopped and sold me 3 gallons of Coleman fluid, which was just enough to get me home. In 1973, I think I gave them $5.00 for 3 gallons. (This was just prior to the Middle East crude embargo, and gas was still 27 cents per gallon.)

First, I want to say your music selections are perfect. The music fits the theme of what you’re demonstrating.
I always wondered about Coleman fuel. As a kid, my family camped a lot, always using white gas, with no lead. All gasoline for cars was leaded then, and apparently the lead and additives would clog the jets and orifices in Coleman stoves and lanterns. I think I have half a gallon maybe of old, old Coleman fuel in the shed. I guess I could safely get rid of it by putting in a nearly full tank in my EcoBoost car.
