In 1982 a friend and I went camping. The fuel pump in my VW broke while we were deep in the mountains! I pulled the fuel line off the pump and plugged it into a bottle of charcoal lighter fluid. Then I turned the bottle upside down and strapped it above the carburetor with a bungee cord. I poked a vent hole to prevent vacuum lock. That quart of charcoal lighter fluid was enough to get us down the mtn to a repair shop!

VW,= 4 Briggs & Stratton engines with common crank shaft and camshaft therefore it will run on almost anything flammable! As with a lot of alder engines, Pre 1974, (first computers).
Now we know that a fire needs three things to burn, ignition, fuel, oxygen, for most fires. So if you lit a match it would be the catalyst, that leaves either substance being burned , or the oxygen as the true fuel?
Remember all fires need oxygen, except some metals, such as Magnesium, this metal gives off oxygen when it burns, thus most firefighters will foam it down and let it burn it self out.

Until I saw this video I had completely forgot about this story. When I was a kid my father and I were camping in the National Forest and we were way way in the middle of nowhere. When we were packing up to leave on Sunday we realized that the truck was very low on fuel and we were miles away from a gas station. We of course ran out before we made it to the station and it wasn’t safe to walk due to bear activity in the area. (This was before cell phones) The only option we had was a gallon of Coleman lantern fuel. Dad poured it in the tank and hoped for the best. The truck started, ran like crap and knocked like crazy but it got us to the gas station. Needless to say we always packed a 5 gallon gas can every time we went camping after that.

Bears? Why wouldn't you pack a suitable defense firearm in bear country?
I've come within 20 yards of a sow with cubs, I was very glad I had a rifle aimed at her while I yelled at her. Luckily she gathered her cubs and left, but I met a guy years later who ended up dispatching an angry bear with an axe. Never will I venture into the woods without a defensive tool.

As for manufacturers, one company (previously part of Johnson Controls, now owned by Brookfield Business Partners) called Clarios manufactures around a third of them, supposedly. Brands include Bosch, Varta (literally the same ones, those), and Optima, among a wide variety of others including quite a few 'house brands'. Not to say they're all the same batteries, but they are all under one umbrella. Exide are another major manufacturer, but I don't know of any brands they OEM off the top of my head (I'm sure they do, though).
There are dozens if not hundreds of smaller companies, but the likes of Clarios and Exide cover most of the market, and their prices reflect the economy of scale..

Never mixed it with gasoline as ethanol is an excellent fuel alone. 80 prof alcohol runs great in gasoline engines, you can run from 70 to 90 prof with 75 being the most efficient in gas engines. I run alcohol in my mower and have been doing so since the 70's I still have my Ford 390 V-8 running on ethanol. I ran alcohol in 6 cylinder engines, fire breathing V-8's and race cars. Indy racers run ethanol because it is safer than methanol or gas. Do some research on alcohol fuel before you become critical of someone in the know!.

      Fabric softener is horrible stuff.
First off, the smell stays around for days, which is offputting and gross.
Then there are the chemicals in there that ruin the flame retardant qualities of many fabrics.
A wax like coating on washcloths and the like keeps them from properly absorbing water, and this builds up over time.
Not to mention the fact that dirt seems to stick to the clothes faster the next time you wear them.
      So skip the fabric softener.

    A serious application question.
This shows that engines will run but with less performance and potential damage. ( carbon fouling)
I would be curious to know if adding the lighter fluid to existing fuel gains an advantage in extending range, or negates the performance of the existing fuel.
    For an example:
An 11 gallon tank holding 10 gallons of gasoline .
At 10mpg would be a range of 100 miles.
The lighter fluid has less performance so less mpg.
So would adding a gallon of lighter fluid to the tank gain mileage?
    ( 100+ )
Or would the lighter fluid taint the existing fuel and have a shorter range? (100-)
Would it be better to add the fuel at the beginning of the trip, or just before the tank is empty?
With the carbon fouling I would say this only be used in a real emergency vs an inconvenient emergency.
The cost of repairs compared to the inconvenience of walking 5 miles to a station and returning may not be worth it.
Something to consider while drinking from my project farm coffee mug 😁

I was happy to see the Wankel rotary engine. Now you can visually seen one of it’s inherent problems; With combustion taking place in only ~ 1/4th of the engine it heats and expands unevenly. Other than the oil burning issue I’ve wondered why there aren’t more generators with Wankel engines. Smaller, lighter, creates more power and if it’s going to run in only a narrow rpm range it can be tuned to be more efficient. Plus it can run on a broader range of liquid fuels more easily.
