    Plumber here. love the setup, however I would suggest a few things additionally; you’re gonna want a one way valve on the hot line where it tee’s off from the cold, that’ll keep it from thermally circulating into your cold water if you go without running a tap for a while. Also you’ll want to add an expansion tank in the line going to the water heater (they’re small tanks that look kinda like a propane tank) and that’ll save some wear and tear on the system as the tank heats and cool during the day/night. Other than that, looks good!

    This might be in the comments somewhere already: careful with that UV light. It is only effective up to a specified flow rate. Faster than its rated flow and it won't kill all the bugs.

    Hey guys, love the channel. I see a ~6" galvanized nipple on the top of the solar batch water heater. Over time, those will rust and pollute the water. You might consider replacing that with a brass nipple, instead. Just a thought... Keep up the great work!

    UV light is bad for all plastic- it's the aspect of natural sunlight that damages exposed pipe. Covering it was a wise investment in not doing it over!

      Spenser a quick tip re. the UV tubes.
      Get yourself a spare to keep for when you have to replace that one in about a years time or, heaven forbid, you break that one.
      That would be a real bummer to be without good water and having to boil all drinking water while waiting for a replacement to arrive.

    • @tbonemc2118
      @tbonemc2118 5 лет назад +2

      That statement is so far wrong. Your pex piping (polyethylene) is 100% UV resistant. Over time when exposed to UV it will develop a chalky exterior which will not affect the integrity of the piping in any way as it will just be the exterior of the pipe. PVC pressure piping is affected by UV but even then there are now brands available that UV doesn't affect like pool piping. Generally there isn't a need for PVC pressure pipe to be UV resistant as it is all laid under ground/under slab. Your PVC SWV (soil waste and vent) piping as well as sewer piping these days is all 100% UV resistant. People paint SWV but that's for aesthetics only.

    • @andrewdavis9021
      @andrewdavis9021 5 лет назад +4

      @@tbonemc2118 you obviously know what you are talking about, a question for you. You say that the uv will only effect the outer layer, but I would assume that would be true if the uv source (usually the sun) was external. In their case the source of the uv is internal to the pipe, so the inside layer would be effected. I assume this would be why the manufacturer would recommend stainless flexible hose on the connections, so the pex inner wall isn't exposed to direct uv.

    • @fredericrike5974
      @fredericrike5974 5 лет назад +2

      @@tbonemc2118 All of this was said about Qest also. I made a tremendous amount of money replacing Qest piping and fittings in residences and apartment houses. The water itself turned out to be the "enemy" and insufficient time on very few research programs had been done before it's entry and use. Most of the "claims" for Qest's good features were found to come from manufacturers. I'm retired now, but still "check in" with some of my vendors, many who have become friends as well as business associates; several, who are selling PEX are still waiting for letters of indemnification- letters from mfgs that absolve the vendors if "something goes wrong". FWIW, I still see PVC stored outside "heat distressed"- dull and dry looking on the sun exposed parts; the dull and dry can well mean the esters have been leached out of the pipe- the esters which give PVC pipe flexibility. It's interesting that PEX gets a "chalky" layer after continued exposure- "chalky" would also describe what is happening to PVC. the Grey PVC used by electricians was supposed to be UV resistant from it's intro; it is not. I am willing to listen, but I need to see some long term research from the several State Universities that do have construction engineering and building programs; the Big Chem co.'s word is simply not enough- I didn't have "customers", I built client relationships, and putting any product into a client's home is something I never did- a couple of ex employees found out the hard way that I meant that. FR

    Hi, parents-to-be! I’m curious since there is no insulation in the walls of the pump house if you’re going to install some type of heater in there for those really cold nights that tend to burst pipes in some winters. Sure would be a shame for all those fittings to have to be fixed. Been there, done that. Maybe install a high wattage light bulb and seal up any air holes (ahem, moon slot in the door.)

Example; 90's are "orange",, Tee's are "green", so on and so forth. Count each color on your drawing and MAKE a LIST With a piece of paper and pencil of materials that yall need before going to town. Rain water is pretty acidic tho, I think this filter setup is very good for everything but drinking because youd literally be drinking acidic unstable water since rain water normally has a KH and GH of near 0 and a PH of 5 - 6, almost sorta like drinking acidic distilled water. You should consider setting up a re-mineralization tank for this so you get the necessary minerals for your body and stability water needs and wants and try adding something to naturally (without chemicals) raise the PH of the water to as close to 7 as possible since babies are also super sensitive to high or low PH water.

    • @SS-bz4ze
      @SS-bz4ze 4 года назад +2

      I know many filters make water more of a acid because they remove the minerals... The air obviously kicks dirt around except Durning a long rain.. as the rain carries it off.... So I know it's always better than filtered...

    • @MidnightMass061
      @MidnightMass061 5 лет назад

      Yes it might get to 30-33 or just below every now and then, but it’s not quite the range around here 86 in the summer, -35 in the winter (those are the extremes). Burying water lines 8ft or more to avoid freezing, I would never get away with above ground tanks lol.
      Yeah, I could move, and maybe one day I will but I don’t see that being a viable option in the near future. For the most part I like it here, just a little jealous at times of the warmer climates.

    Awesome channel. I love watching the progress. You two would put most professional contractors to shame. The coyote also reminds me of the Jackal that we have here is South Africa. A wonderful sound. All the best.

    The rain water doesn't contain valuable minerals, you have to enrich it with those (magnezium, calcium, etc), otherwise you'll be drinking almost airconditioner's condensed water...It's bad for human body organism on a long run as most of the minerals are dissolved in and gained from drinking water. You may also buy solar pannels and use them to run airdryer, to collect condensed water from a thin air, that of course if the humidity levels are high enough in your area. You may run it when the humidity is high enough and there is a sun outside. Also heating the rooftop on winter may supply you with clean solar pannels and to turn out the snow to water. BTW, UV is not good enough for this kind of installation, simply because the flow is too fast to get appropriate treatment, its better to combine UV with H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) treatment. Not sure about your area, but why not simply drill a deep hole in the ground and make an artesian well?

    you might need to add a check valve at the input of the water heater. This would prevent hot water from entering into the cold line

    Hey just a thought, I think you may have put your “gallon counter” in backwards. If it is anything like a city water meter, you have it flowing into the out side. Maybe it’s a different setup, but just wanted to throw it out there just in case you are having any issues!

    Y'all are so much fun to watch! My wife and I always look forward to your next video. You've inspired us and been a wealth of information. We are doing something very similar for our drinking water. We just finished setting up our rain gutters, installed our 2500 gallon tanks just before it rained last week and caught over 600 gallons. We live in north central TX. Thanks for the tip on using Sikaflex. We are building our pump house next week. The components of the pump house is the most confusing part. I know you've done the research and would love a more detailed explanation of the components and how they operate, e.g. pressure tank (what size, brand), piping, switches, and most importantly the filtering system (specific type of filters, why you purchased a particular brand, cost, etc.) I know many people like myself would love a more detailed video on this subject. Keep up the great videos!!

    I use that same type filter at our cabin, which is on a well system. We change the filter every six months. We use chlorination injection to kill any bacteria in the well water. That is what municipalities use.
    Since you are using rain water, instead of ground water, that UV light is a good option for killing bacteria. A lot of houses around us use UV light on their ground water systems. I have one neighbor who does not use any method to kill bacteria. They've been drinking water from their well for seventeen years without any apparent problems.
    We live next to a lake, which is really the source of our ground water. As least you don't have to worry about pesticide runoff in rain water, needing a water softener, sulfur, iron, etc.
    One of our neighbors uses a rain water system with a 2500 gallon storage system. He lives alone and it works for him. We have been getting plenty of rain the past few years. Several years ago, we had a drought and he had to bring in water that one summer. With 7500 gallons of water storage, you should be fine.
    Your system looks good. That filter works great. Your filter cartridges may last longer than six months since you are using rainwater. Rain water should have minimal sentiment, unless it picks up some dust particles from the roof or gutters.
    Keep up the good work.

    You might want to install a check valve between the cold water line tee, and the inlet of the batch water heater tank, if you didn't already. Otherwise, great work and video!

    Inside the heater tank, is the pressure relief line terminated high in the tank? If understand correctly, it should be, otherwise overpressure will empty the tank, leaving mostly steam; but if it is in high position, the steam will be evacuated first, lowering the temperature/presssure faster.

    • @ericfuruglyas6365
      @ericfuruglyas6365 5 лет назад

      I also was curious about a check valve somewhere after you "T" of the cold supply. I did not see one. When the water in the tank is hot it is higher pressure than the cold water at 32 PSI. Therefore when you turn on a cold tap in the house you will get hot water out of the cold tap until the water pressure equalizes.
