I love this home. It has all the necessities for comfortable living. I am encouraged by the fact a home in Northern Michigan gets enough sun to power the solar panels. My favorite part though, is the couple. They are not polished or rehearsed. They seem to be authentically off-grid people who want to share their knowledge.
I live off grid in Upstate NY, where the sun doesn’t shine much in winter. My Tiny house is under 600 sq. ft. With 1600 watts of solar, two 420, 6 volt Crown batteries and a 300 watt inverter. My fridge, freezer, water pump are all 12 volt. I heat the house with a wood cook stove and heat water with a thermosiphoning system off that stove. I also have an off grid, propane stove and oven and sawdust toilets. Two large dogs, two cats, and chickens. I’m never bored. I’m always coming up with another idea to try. I’ve been doing this close to 10 years. It’s a process and I love learning and experimenting. It’s so good to see others doing the same. Put a few off-grid folks in a room and they’ll be bouncing ideas around the room. In my opinion, everyone should try this lifestyle for a year. You learn to conserve and think about what you’re using. Thanks for the video. Off-gridders are not crazy after all!
Barb and Dan, I love your ingenuity. I would be very proud to live in your awesome home. I would be extremely proud to be your neighbor. Brooke and Dave have the coolest, smartest friends. Kinda like like the Mensas of off grid living. Thank you for the tour!!
I live off grid with 4 Victron inverters, 12 Battle Born batteries and 3840 watts of solar panels. The 3000va inverters gives me plenty of 240V power to run anything I want including a welder. My solar panels are mounted on three 8 foot high 6" pipes set in concrete. On a normal day the batteries are fully charged before noon. I have propane heat and a propane tank-less water heater. Everything else is electric. I don't have a wood stove/fireplace (been there done that) and therefore I don't have to deal with gathering wood, splitting, drying etc. I've been living off grid since 2019, first in a motor home and for the last four years in my 360 sq ft cabin in the Colorado Rockies. I live off my soc sec and a very small pension, but have more money than I ever had in my life! It's so nice to see other folks enjoying life with all the comforts a home can give and not be burdened with debt. Well done and thank you for sharing your story with the rest of us.
Simply wonderful. My god I love the pantry and the kitchen and the coziness of the fireplace you can sit there at the table or you can sit in the relax chairs. I like the outbuildings.
I really appreciate when you do this Brooke! Thanks for sharing this interview of another couple's idea of the off grid lifestyle. This is something that I definitely want to do in the future and watching you and Dave's videos helps me to plan and prepares me for things I just wouldn't think of on my own. Thanks Barb and Dan also for letting us see your version of off-grid living.
Great Idea Brooke. By showing various homes off grid and semi off grid, it may help people on the brink of deciding a lifestyle change to investigate the many varieties possible. I think a lot of people fear making foundational missteps. For some there's no money to scrap a project and start over. Every step of the way will have to be functional and livable. But that's how the country was started, actually that's how every country/nation/civilization starts. The priorities are a strong shelter, food, storage, safety, medicals, etc. Improvement and additions came later. By that time you'll have a better understanding of exactly what you need to do to improve your home. Until then basic livable is enough. There are many with no shelter at all, no certainty of eating , no clean water available,in unsavory areas and often so trapped in circumstances they didn't create by bad behavior ,there's no way to change their living conditions.
I love everything about this off grid homestead project. All of the needs covered thoroughly and well, and none of the unnecessary clutter of regular life. Outstanding!
Thank you so much Barb and Dan for sharing your beautiful cozy warm home with us. I live just outside Lansing and my daughter went to Michigan Tech. I just fell in love with the UP of Michigan especially the Keweenaw peninsula. I grew up in Southern California and moved to Michigan in 1995 when I retired from the military. I’ve been looking for several years now for some property up north but haven’t found the right piece. I’m almost 67 and all by myself now so for a single old gal haha I would love to be off the beaten path but still need to be realistic etc. there’s a lot to be said to living with minimal stuff. We think we need a huge home stuffed to the ceiling with stuff. However, I lived in Kodiak, Alaska for 6 years and I think those were the happiest 6 years of my entire life. Fishing, crabbing, hunting, clean air, water and the northern lights what more could a person wish for in life. Best of luck to you both as you enjoy your little nest of heaven you’ve built for yourselves.
Love ❤️ what Barb & Dan built there, their systems are so well thought out, functional-able and smart. From building with cash, debt free, root cellar to security to self sufficiency. Wow and amazing. Thanks Brook and Dave for sharing this!
Amazing folks and an amazing set up! ❤ Would that more folks would live this way. I'm thinking she can get a wringer washer to do her laundry. You can buy one that runs on propane, and there's plenty of room for a clothes line. Mom used to run her water out so it watered her flowers. Hope these folks enjoy many happy years on their cute homestead. Thank you for sharing them with us. Stay safe and GOD bless
Get a mini washer. Can do most laundry at home. Doesnt take up much room and works on solar panel!!!!! Wrings clothes almost dry. I hav one n it works great. I wash several loads then change water and rinse. Great guard cat inspecting every thing
Living traditions built a two fence "chicken moat" to keep deer out. There is an inner fence and an outer fence 6 ft apart that completely surrounds the garden & orchard. Maybe that could help you fence with their deer problem
Such a handsome homestead! Truly in awe of Barb and Dan and their creativity, determination and philosophy. They have definitely inspired! Thanks for taking the time to show us Brooke, this was awesome 🤩
My wife and I just got a tiny house. The outside measurement is 16X46. We also want to get a wood stove. I was wondering what kind and size of stove you have? Very nice setup. We have just less than an acre. But the layout of the land for the gardens and animals is great. Hope you have a blessed day! Jimmy
Reminds me of the cabin in-laws had. It started with two rooms and a loft and ended with another equal size open room with added bath house. We heated water either with large coffee makers or sun bag to hang in shower surround. Lol, yes, the deer are plentiful and can’t plant anything without barriers. One thing I would prefer is a soapstone stove. Tend not to scream out heat and retains it longer with small burns.
We heated with wood when we we lived out in the country in Colorado and I loved it. We did have electricity if we had to use it but never did. So many things you have implemented remind me of my in-laws farm when we married more than 50 years ago. They had a big garden and canned enough for winter and stored in the cellar. They butchered their own meat. They had a hand pump for water and this was when they were raising four kids. The house is still in the family and has gradually been modernized but for just two people it is a great life.
This was an awesome video of what can be done to live Off-Grid and still have all the amenities one needs! A very enterprising couple and very nicely presented to us all!!! At my age, it isn't something I would tackle, but from watching all the "Bush Radical" and "Girl in the Woods" videos and a few others, I am impressed and I feel as if I have been part of being "OFF-GRID"!!! Thank you so much! 👍👍👍
Thanks for the video, I’m also in SE lower Mi and wanting to do the same in upper lower Mi within a few years! Thank you Barb and Dan for sharing your home with us! Very beautiful place! ✌🏼❤️🙏🏼
Barb and Dan your place is amazing! Thanks for sharing. I love that Barb has 'taken over' the wood shed with food production --- chickens and maple syrup --- eating well is important. You are both lucky to have each other with complementary skills and shared goals. You're living a lot of people's dreams, including mine!
I love the reference to Bush Radical not wanting to put any holes in the roof, knowing that he is talking to Girl in the Woods, Bush Radical's wife! Love it!
Thanks for taking us on this journey with you Brooke !!! Their cabin has all that a person would need in fact I have learnt that having the freezer outside is the best winter time !!! Then it doesn't take that much watts !!! You can have 2 of those freezers that it takes for 1 to run in a house in the city!!! Learnt it from another channel !!!
Living off grid and living your own life. Who needs big city living? They built a smart home with additional out buildings for their needs. Dan is very handy!
Wow, Brooke, so cool to see Barb and Dan again, I just loooove their homestead! They're great people, I really enjoyed our time with them. I could easily live with this much luxury! They have more than all you need. Love it! I have lived with MUCH less in smaller digs. One thing I would say to Barb is to check into a foot powered teeny load washing machine, uses one gallon of water. Can't do sheets or large garments, so you still have to go to laundromat, but for a pair of jeans and a few t-shirts, underwear, socks, etc. It beats hand washing. They're very small and efficient. I used to send these to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan to use in the desert. I'm sure they got pretty sweaty and uncomfortable spending weeks in the same uniform. Anyway, it saves on having to own a lot of clothes, I'd rather just own 2 or 3 pair of sheets and go to laundromat once a month. Just wash the clothing essentials you need by foot in between and get some mean gams at the same time! Barb already has some great hiking muscles. 🥰 Thanks for posting this, I'm happy you guys are keeping in touch! Say hello from boring Florida for me and that im so impressed with their home and way of life. Cheryl
Well done with your home Dan and Barb! I love the red siding with the wood porch: It looks so nice! You made every comfort you needed to live free off grid. Thanks for letting Brooke film your home! Thank you Brooke. I enjoy your video's!
I'm not sure what I enjoyed more. Learning about the ingenious simplicity of what they've built and how they live in it? Or just the chill, pleasant, hardworking but appreciative personalities of this man and woman. They are comfortable in their own skins and comfortable in their relationship with one another and the world. They must be good workers in their jobs and good friends to those who know them. Also, as in every other part of the world, the cats run the joint.
Thanks for sharing this Brooke and to Barb and Dan for opening up their lovely home for us to see. Looks like they have some pretty good systems set up to meet their needs. Sweet. ATVB.
I hardly know where to begin to gush with the many wonderful aspects of this home and property - although nothing in life is perfect, this place seems to be as close as one can come to that, in the OG world. Well done, you two - wonderful team work and it shows that you have a deep appreciation and respect for each other!
I love it . I am a Michigan girl 78 years olf this year but now live in Arizona. Would love to have an off grid home if I had a place like yours. My Mom was born in the UP in Mohawk and as a child I spent many summers with my parents camping in the UP when we would go to pick blueberries. So fun. Wish it was not so far to go and if I had someone to go with I think I'd just do it before its too late. That little house of yours looks perfect. I also love canning and baking or used to. Not so much any more but I love the woods and nature for sure. Thanks for sharing
Nice to see fellow michiganders living off grid. I live in the thumb of michigan. Been living off grid for 20 years. Plus I stand 3'10. Many people didn't think I make a year. Lol 20 years I'm still here & loving it.
Hi Barb and Dan, I loved your video. You were saying you wished you could do laundry at your cabin. Why not try and find a wringer washer my mom used one of those while i was growing up. You can wash many loads on the same water. Starting with your white clothes to your dark clothes. I think it would be good for the summer into fall.
My husband’s mother always has had a wringer washing machine & loved it. They had 7 kids so there was always laundry to do. She always said the wringer washer got the clothes cleaner. In later years, they bought a traditionally washing machine machine, but always had the wringer washer.
Querida Brooke. Si algún día vienes a México, estás invitada a nuestra cabaña artesanal y Offgrid, muchas gracias por todo tu contenido. Desde el bosque, mucho amor!!
Very nice place yall I bought my off grid cabin and it’s awesome I do love it up in the north Georgia mtns the black bears are everywhere too lol and the wild hogs and deer too I’m making improvements to my liking as I go it’s all paid for thank the lord for that so I’m going to move there full time in a couple of years when I retire 😀
This was an awesome watch Brooke. I Believe these videos will help so many people, very happy to see you doing them. This Couple has built a beautiful and very Functional place for themselves and hearing how they came to realize how living simple can work, and be enjoyable was great to see. Best wishes
Thank you Barb and Dan, for letting us see your cabin and it is a very well planned out cabin and very cosy. Thanks Brooke for taking us to Barb and Dan's place enjoyed it very much.
What a wonderful home they have created! So many great ideas for storage, living tiny, and living off grid. Thanks for giving us the tour, Barb, Dan, Brooke and Dave.
The simple life is definitely the best life! We went completely off-grid almost two years ago, starting off in a 13' camper 2kms into the woods, and I could never go back to suburban or city life! It's the ultimate freedom, really, being solely responsible and in control of literally every aspect of your life :) Shortly before our first winter here, we did find a cheap, large RV which we bought and moved into. The master bedroom was rotted out, as was the slide, so we removed the slide and built an 8x10 addition off that opening. Under the addition is our septic tank (the RV has a normal flush toilet). In the addition we have the power centre for our solar, a large woodstove and our water system. For internet, we just use our phones which have unlimited data, and a cell booster so we get enough signal to use it 🤣
I grew up with no electricity.....no screens on windows...we did have a well and a rain barrel.....wood stove in kitchen... "Y'ALL GOT IT MADE" .....yup.... very nice
My great aunt and uncle had a wash house. It was just a small room where they kept their wash tubs and wringer type washing machine. They used a old bathtub placed up on a platform, for gravity, that they collected rain water in. They used that water for washing and rinsing clothes. There was a wood/coal heater inside the room for heat. I honestly can’t remember if they heated their water or not. If it was raining or to cold, they used clothes lol nes inside to hang the clothes for drying.
Wow what an amazing life. You do get your freedom. Your home is beautiful, you have everything you need. Even your outhouse is nice. Your cat feels right at home.
What a good job you both have done. You have placed yourself out of life's rat race into a well functioning home. Everyone is happy. Yes, you need a spot for family & grandkids to come and stay. Many special memories will be here.
The fruits of life experience make a BIG difference. Learned so much from you, in your debt. Plans a plenty, well, long term purpose. This is a brilliant means to an end. Happy times!
What a lovely, lovely place and couple! I especially liked the enclosed porch. The home feels so cozy and safe. The kitty cats are the cherry on top. May they all enjoy it for many years!
So true! Get ideas from folks already doing whatever interests you, but ultimately do what makes you happiest. Thanks for sharing your ideas :) (And thanks, Brooke, for sharing their story!) Enjoy the journey! God Bless
Absolutely inspiring. Thanks, Brooke, for taking us along. Thank you Barb and Dan, for including us on your homestead.🥰
0 I am able I will have to wait till I can 0
Absolutely 💯 yeah Michigan ✌️👍🇺🇸
How do you shower?
I'd be happy with a place like that. I don't need all the unnecessary luxuries, just the things that are genuinely needed.
Seriously, what more do you need for two people. Thanks Brooke and thank you Dan & Barb for showing us your home. Be Blessed. 😊🇺🇲
Well said indeed.

Michigan gets sun three seasons a year, forget wintery, cloudy sky.
They did a great job, it’s a bright and happy place, they have really used their space well! ❤️❤️❤️
THEY DID A WOUNDERFUL JOB ON THE HOMESTEAD!!!
absolutely!
@@therealgirlinthewoodsroot cellar no longer a secret after you posted here for the world to see 🤨

That’s awesome! We totally agree!
Wonderful way to live having someone to share with the same mindset.
Even Kitty’s happy
👍🏻🌻❤️❤️❤️
Barb and Dan, I love your ingenuity. I would be very proud to live in your awesome home. I would be extremely proud to be your neighbor. Brooke and Dave have the coolest, smartest friends. Kinda like like the Mensas of off grid living. Thank you for the tour!!
lol thanks Billie :)
That’s was awesome thanks for sharing this with us
glad you liked it -thanks for watching!
Beautiful cabin. 👌
Love the way the house is built. Very cool layout.
They are so non-chalant about how Awesome they are! True Michiganders *
LOL love that so true

Ugh tell me about it. Some rough living out there sometimes. Gotta pull through and figure it out. God bless.

Agree totally 🐈 😻

@@sixteeschyl agreed!! Hello from Poland 🇵🇱 and my lifestyle and freedom channel 😊!
When we tried off grid the biggest thing we missed was a good washer/dryer. This is a great cabin. Well done guys.

what a wonderful home you built and love the sliding door to lock it up
I love their house, their calmness, and how much they love their cats! thanks for the film everyone
This is great. I love the idea to keep it simple yet functional. The root cellar is the best! I want one just like it. With better ventilation.
Love seeing Michiganders with a similar mindset....Built my off grid cabin getaway in 1995 before it was cool. Still enjoy my time there.
Awesome off grid cabin set-up! They have done an amazing job.

Awesome and inspiring, thank you for sharing your beautiful home, and thank you Brooke for posting this 🤟
Nice to see fellow michiganders living off grid. I live in the thumb of michigan. Been living off grid for 20 years. Plus I stand 3'10. Many people didn't think I make a year. Lol 20 years I'm still here & loving it.
Brilliant I love this so much! Thank you for sharing your home with Brooke and all of us ❤
Cool off-grid cabin, awesome root cellar too…
Barb and Dan have such a fantastic home. Thanks for showing us around. Loved your video, Brooke.
Great job! I’d love to see more episodes like this where you interview current cabin owners.
Absolutely adorable little home. Love the two chairs by the stove. Very well thought out. Thanks Brooke for sharing this with us!❤️
Hi Barb and Dan, I loved your video.
Definitely preppers! ❤🎉 Saving this inspiration on 2 playlists for future reference on design! Off grid sustainability and houses. Thank y’all all 3.
What a beautiful place! Thanks for sharing!!

This was an awesome watch Brooke. I Believe these videos will help so many people, very happy to see you doing them. This Couple has built a beautiful and very Functional place for themselves and hearing how they came to realize how living simple can work, and be enjoyable was great to see. Best wishes
awesome yes it's dialed in for sure! thanks guys :)
It's the ultimate freedom, really, being solely responsible and in control of literally every aspect of your life :)
Shortly before our first winter here, we did find a cheap, large RV which we bought and moved into. The master bedroom was rotted out, as was the slide, so we removed the slide and built an 8x10 addition off that opening. Under the addition is our septic tank (the RV has a normal flush toilet). In the addition we have the power centre for our solar, a large woodstove and our water system. For internet, we just use our phones which have unlimited data, and a cell booster so we get enough signal to use it 🤣
sweet!
Love it! Great job with everything. One of the best off grid set ups I have seen. Regards, Randy @ Coyote Sticks
agree
I grew up with no electricity.....no screens on windows...we did have a well and a rain barrel.....wood stove in kitchen... "Y'ALL GOT IT MADE" .....yup.... very nice
So inspiring! Love the idea of a simple life!❤️
My great aunt and uncle had a wash house.
Outstanding!
Wow what an amazing life. You do get your freedom. Your home is beautiful, you have everything you need. Even your outhouse is nice. Your cat feels right at home.
Impressive and inspiring!! ❤
What a good job you both have done. You have placed yourself out of life's rat race into a well functioning home. Everyone is happy. Yes, you need a spot for family & grandkids to come and stay. Many special memories will be here.
Thank you. The little guest cabin is almost done, the first grandchild is due in June!
Weird 😂..lovely. lovely
Agreed Folks! I’ve been doing the same in the desert for 15 years. Awesome. Not for everyone the ladies tell me, but awesome.
So true! Get ideas from folks already doing whatever interests you, but ultimately do what makes you happiest. Thanks for sharing your ideas :) (And thanks, Brooke, for sharing their story!) Enjoy the journey! God Bless
My favorite thing about off grid living is how it inspires creativity.
Creative ideas and excellent construction of buildings. Fabulous! Love your Philosophy your for living.
