Yo people! Hope you enjoy this video. It's one I have wanted to make for a while, and one I don't think is really gonna break any records for views etc, but if you people who do watch it actually find it engaging then I will consider it well worth while. Also actually interested to hear your thoughts in response to that question I asked at the end. x

Very interesting series on a _fascinating_ subject! Definately gonna watch!
      My 3 things would be:
      - less screen time,
      - more time spent in nature,
      - more frequent self reflection/"mind work".
      >> tbh, i've already started this a few months back and do see the difference.

      - Re-engage with weightlifting after 3 years absence… much shame

As a reflection on my 27 years of life, there is one distinct period of my life where I woke up feeling an overwhelming sense of optimism everyday (my most significant natural high).
By way of background, during said period I was getting little sleep (4-6h a night), no exercise, a roulette diet and spent weeks without being able to trust a fart. At the time I was 21 and working in Wuhan as an English teacher. I had a roommate and lived in a hotel with 6 colleagues. Personal time and space was at an absolute minimum, but I was the most socially active I'd ever been and felt incredibly close to those around me. Whilst it was difficult to navigate through my surroundings, people's attitude towards me was very open and complementary. Not knowing what to expect and choosing to embrace everything I faced meant every day was off the rails in some bizarre way.
Returning from chaos where I felt like a lynchpin to Manchester was a shock to the system, suddenly being on my own and unimportant. If anything it taught me to be self-reliant and follow my own path.
I doubt I'll ever recreate this setting. At the time I knew it was special. Constant unknown, learning, friends and interactions felt like the recipe for excitement, optimism and motivation.
    Thanks for reading.

    1. I had a life period when I felt litery high almost all the time. Sometimes I would just start to laugh for no reason just for the pure beauty of living. The secret is gratitude journal. 20-30 things to be grateful for written every morning and of course you need to feel true gratitude to single one of them, it's not just about writing stuff. And you should eventually practice gratitude during the day. I believe happiness is a skill not an asset.
    2. As a Christian I often think of the idea of unconditional love towards others, seem kinda extreme. But I started to say "I love you" to every person I meet on the street, just in my mind of course. I look at their face and try to imagine that they are someone I truly love, my sister, brother, mother, father, best friend. Some faces induce thoughts of a bad person. I think: This fat guy should exercise more like I do. This lady looks so grumpy, she should be grateful like I am." etc. I try to kill my arrogance and ego and imagine what would I say to my fat brother or grumpy sister or hobo best friend. I would say I love you, no conditions, no arrogance. And you can imagine saying that to everyone. Very soul refreshing.
    3. Many high achieving people have daily routine of self love, many are done in front of a mirror. This one is weird - Stand in front of a mirror a look yourself in the eyes and say "I love you" for two minutes straight every day. And mean it! You are not perfect, sometimes you are an ass, but you can still love yourself.
Preposition - happiness is a skill
    1. Learn to love your life
    2. Learn to love your neighbor
    3. Learn to love yourself

Top 3 interventions in the pursuit of the natural high for me:
1.) Reducing alcohol / drug intake. This always messes up my sleep schedule and causes me to get poor sleep, which causes anxiety the following day from the lack of sleep and alcohol/drug come down.
2.) Improving sleep quality and quantity. This is directly affected by alcohol and drug intake, but also can be improved upon once the alcohol /drug part is taken care of. My peak performance is when I have between 8-9 hours of sleep.
3.) Focusing on the right things in life. For example, not doom scrolling on twitter or news outlets all day, not watching endless RUclips videos all day, not watching porn and doing things that drive me forward towards my goals such as working on a business or going to the gym or socializing and meeting new people or traveling.
Diet has always come easy to me, but those three are the big ones for me to feel that peak natural high.

1.Less screen time: I look into screens a lot whether it is producing content for RUclips or just procrastinating on my phone
    2. More frequent sleep schedule: Goes along with point 1 as I feel one of the factors that hinders me from having an actual sleeping rhythm is being on electronic devices too much too late in the day
3: Lifestyle: Something I've been wanting to do for longer now but never got the chance to do it, is exploring my area more, while I lived here for my entire life I still feel like I could find a lot of new places and go on adventures around my place

    Hey Joe.
You’re literally my favorite fitness RUclipsr, man.
I’m gonna start the challenge with you.
    Here are my three things:
    1. Diet
    2. Therapy
    3. Hygiene
As a teenager, 1 & 3 are just gonna help me in the long run… becoming the one teen in the gym who doesn’t smell like a dead horse, or not having a diet that consists of eating the aforementioned dead horse: probably gonna be good habits.
I know therapy’s kind of a personal thing, and it’s not something I expect you to document in whatever journey you’re starting now, but I’d recommend it. There’s so many different types and styles, from cognitive “sit on the couch tell me about your problems” therapy to trauma “click this button when you feel uncomfortable” therapy. If guy who’s as admired as you starts taking therapy as a part of this, even though you’ve got a sick lifestyle and personality, it might inspire people who actually do have problems (that need therapy) to go and seek help.
And y’know to get to the point where you seem to be at now mentally, you probably had to crawl through some shit that could personally benefit from therapy.
(I mean you’ll benefit from the therapy, not the shit.)

    Answer to question at end:
    1. Having no expectations / no such thing as perfect
    2. Not taking everything in life seriously (what u take seriously you empower)
    3. Getting out of the house
    Extra
    - Recognising beliefs based off of fear and change them through action
    - Diet
    - tech consumption
    - brain exercises - treat the exercises like a supplement. Ones that don’t work might mean that part of the brain is functioning well, but another exercise, engaging a different part of the brain (that’s not performing up to standard) this helped my quality of life drastically.
Eye exercises help the brain - my eyes aren’t functioning properly and I mistook it for anxiety, but it was my body in stress due to having to overwork itself to function.
    - See a Functional Neurologist! life changing for me.
    - watch Joe Delaney

I love this concept. I'll certainly be watching every video you upload on the topic. Lately I've been trying to simplify my life both externally and internally, and I've noticed a huge improvement in how I feel overall. I'm naturally a very driven and analytical person and I've always held high standards and created lofty goals for myself. I'm trying to let go of all that and I'm trying instead to just be content with existing. That might sound a bit bleak at first, but the less you require for your contentment; the easier it is to be content. It's somewhat cliche to say now, but I've been meditating consistently every morning for just over a year now. One of the many things I've learned through it is just how peaceful and blissful my mind can be when it's not being weighed down with the usual shit I tend to weigh it down with. I used to garner much of my meaning and purpose by chasing external things such as career success, creative success with art and music, praise or acceptance from other people and material possessions. All that stuff requires so much mental energy to plan and maintain and I've realised that the constant rumination is detracting from my life and wellbeing way more than it's adding to it. Obviously I can't completely disregard those externalities, but my focus and purpose has shifted away from those things and more towards a simpler existence where I desire less and find more contentment in just being. It's had a profound effect on my mental state and my quality of life overall.
Obviously, I'm not discounting the more obvious and fundamental necessities when it comes to health and wellbeing too. As you mention in the video: sleep, diet, physical activity, sunlight and healthy relationships, among other things, are all vital factors in creating and maintaining a healthy and happy life. I've also been experimenting with adding breathwork to my daily routine over the last few weeks; namely the Wim Hof method. It's early days, but I'm enjoying it so far and it seems to be having a beneficial effect on my mental state and energy levels. Could be something else for you to look into, if you haven't already done so.
All the best on your journey mate. I love your unique and bullshit-free way of approaching these kinds of topics and I'm already looking forward to the next video!

I can already see the last part of the series or the “ what I have learnt” ,
The natural high comes from your perception of the world or how you view the world and how ur mindset decides that feeling of ecstasy. External factors matter less and everyone should constantly try to learn and have a growth mindset.
Then again you can only improve if you use the left side of your brain play a sport, improve cognitive intelligence and have wellness practices in your daily routine, i.e EXTERNAL FACTORS.

Apart from subscribing I have used the diagram you drew to keep a daily record of the “scores” for each enable and inhibitor you call out. Scoring is easy - it’s influencing the scores that is the challenge. It really is a rare thing these days to watch a video without being told what to do or eat or how to be. If I'm gonna pick the three biggest things that I think would create the natural high in my current day to day life it would be:
    1. Vulnerability and gratitude (especially for family) - We are all going to die, spending the little time we have to live being emotionally isolated or cynical is a huge loss of life quality. Lower the defences and prioritize what will TRULY be important to me on my deathbed.
    2. Processing trauma - making peace with all my loved ones, forgiving others and myself, finally letting go of all the baggage I carry around with me.
    3. Meditation, mindfulness and/or spiritual practice. - Not only is it the doorway to transcendental experiences and such a strong sense of meaning that it's hard to even comprehend, but it is also a way to just be present in every moment and be free of unnecessary stress.
I believe these are some fundamental requirements for living the best life you can possibly live. If your goal is truly to see how good you can humanly feel in this life, then I think it is necessary to go way deeper than "read everyday, take cold showers, use phone less" and all of those life hack type of things. A true sense of meaning in life will not come from reading a book, taking a cold shower or using your phone less, not even if you do all of them consistently. But some of those things might trigger deeper changes, such as being more grateful, vulnerable and present, because you no longer distract yourself with your phone. But I believe the 3 things things I should do to create a natural high that I just mentioned are solutions to core issues rather than small life hacks stacked on top of each other.

I've been on a similar journey to consciously not feel shit and this is year 7.
I think yeah, I feel really good... and down moments are becoming more manageable and less time consuming. My current list includes:
I exercise 2x a day. Any combination of running, long walks, stretching, light strength training, I haven't play football due to covid but that will come in time.
I hold at least 2 meditations/breathing sessions a day minimum 10minutes each. This helps to keep me focused and screen the negativity of my surroundings. Plus doing it right before bed has really helped with my goal of better sleep.
I sleep better. More consistent with my wake up times. Still working on sleep time but the breathing and meditation before bed has been a huge factor in better sleep, even if I'm getting 5 hours as opposed to 6.5 hours. 8 or more hours happens on Saturday night into Sunday and it's good. So good. Then i realised me hating naps growing up was worth revisiting because trying to get all 6 or 8 hours at once may not be possible a half hour snooze is brilliant when I can create the time.
Screen time/social media time has been reduced significantly. I feel i miss out especially when in conversations but I know what I gain is a much better feeling than if I consumed more social media, and i get the chance to ask people to tell me more which make me look super interested in what others want to say.
Better diet to increase my weight in a healthy manner is what I currently focused on, along with reading more books to fuel my mind.
Its a long and winding road... but it is possible to feel consistently better every day and see how the perspective of my immediate surroundings change to match my mood.
Thank you sir for sharing. I feel my approach has been less structured than yours, however this has given me encouragement to tighten up my slack ends.
    nuff love n respect

I'm a little late to the party, but I've just "finished" making my changes. I went through a hard decade of learning and the past few years have been especially excruciating. I didn't want to be on anxiety medication anymore, so I started my way out by going to a holistic doctor. Best decision of my life as she was the only one that would listen and diagnose instead of just diagnose by what I thought I had. She did a TON of bloodwork to find out my deficiencies. I was lacking Vitamin B12, D, Magnesium, and Omega-3's. I was severely deficient in all of those. She also found out I was born with something missing (I can't think of what exactly it is) that contributes to anxiety and depression, which B12 and Magnesium both help with. She also found out that I was low in testosterone, so I started TRT. All of those have made a HUGE difference in my sleep and pretty much fixed my heart palpitations. It turns out the lack of B12 and Magnesium contribute to that. I also had SVT which I was born with. Finally found out in 2017 and had an ablation.
I started meditating over a year and a half ago. Now I meditate for at least 45 minutes a night and I incorporate breathwork with my meditation. (Wim Hoff or slow stomach breathing - in for 3 to 5 seconds, out 10 or more seconds) My nightly routine (if all goes well): Eat dinner by 6:30 at the latest, shower, meditate by 7 or 8. In bed and asleep before 10. Up at 6 a.m. It's changed my life.
I started taking cold showers a while back but fell out of that while I was clawing my way out of anxiety and depression. But I'm to the place now where I am ready to continue doing that.
My diet. I have always been very active. I grew up a runner and then into weight lifting and cardio. I fell out of that for the past 10 years. I could always compete but I was always tired. Turns out I had bad guts which I take a probiotic for now which has definitely changed my life. But the biggest diet change was finding out I was allergic to Gluten. My immune system attacks it and anything I digest with it. So if I eat a burger with all the nutrients I need, if the bun has gluten, my body will purge everything, including all of the healthy things I need (hence the vitamin deficiencies). No more gluten has reduced my heart palpitations, headaches, and immediate need to go to the bathroom after I eat.
I've started working out again. I've lost quite a lot of weight in the past two years from changing my diet alone. I'm 6'4 with a normal weight of 215 to 225 and I got up to 282 lbs. I started eating healthier and did the OMAD diet. Lost 62 lbs. Had a few tragedies happen that got me off course temporarily and went back up to 245. Around a month ago, I started getting my shit back together and now I'm 227 on my way to 210 ish. Give or take 10 lbs.
It's been an incredible road. I never knew how healthy I could feel. It's been over 10 years.....probably more like 13. When you're down in the dumps, it's so hard to even THINK about getting healthy again. Then get the motivation to go forward. But it's possible and it takes time. The results are definitely worth it!
It's a journey to find all this out. You have the right mentality. What I have gone through isn't what everyone else goes through and it takes a really long time.
I can't wait to watch your journey evolve.

    1. Lower my alcohol intake to no more than once a month. I can't stand not feeling fresh any more and it takes me a few days to get back to normal, sometimes a week or more. I don't have a problem with alcohol by any means, but i'm also 31 and i'm just over it (also the calories).
    2. Get to the country side more often. I live in Scotland and on the edge of the city but i would love to move permanently further up north to the highlands. It's definitely a goal of mine.
    3. Stick to certain hobbies more. I do things like learn spanish/russian but don't put a massive effort in to it. I've also played guitar for years but have stagnated with it recently during the pandemic for no real reason.
that's probably the 3 things that bother me most than came to mind during your video.

    To answer your question:
    1. Sleep (Sleep is really the pillar of health,I can tell you from my experience that everything improved when I started getting better sleep .And everything got worse when I started getting worse sleep. The natural high is a pretty good explanation of what you can expect when you maximize your sleep. Digestion is better, mood is better, mental clarity, productivity and so much more. I heard a quote that said "The difference between hope and despair is a good night's sleep." So true! The sleep issue kind of ties with stress levels. If you are chronically stressed, you have to fix this first since sleep will take a toll.
2.Lifestyle : Directing my energy towards activities that achieve a purpose of high meaning to me . For example,I find that when I'm actively spending time towards improving my music skills (e.g. practicing guitar) I feel much better in every way,in every area of my life. This may be different for everyone but I find that doing meaningful work/hobbies etc, whatever that means for someone is what matters.
    3. Diet : This is more of a personal thing as I have a quite sensitive digestive system but I found that since finding a diet that I'm ok with(not burdened digestively, enjoying what I eat and being able to sustain it) I have more predictable energy levels. This allows me to have the energy I need to give it my all to what matters to me and enjoy life to the best of my ability.
Probiotics make a big difference too. Start drinking kefir that you culture yourself daily and see the difference. You start feeling more stress resilient and with a sense of happiness and contentment that comes from your gut,if that makes sense :)

Control of your own emotions and stoicism, is a path way that has lead me to a “natural high”. I’ve experienced what I would call a natural high, through communication and respect for others and myself. I’ve found that it is incredibly difficult to reach it by yourself, but with others it comes like a smooth and almost controlled happiness. When you don’t let the external interfere with your internal, then your able to chose your response, which are stepping stones forward to this kind of happiness that can be shared. - I understand this is probably the most weird response ever :)

Diet has always been something with me that has made little to no difference to how I feel or perform.
Matt Fraser summed it up best when he was on JRE. He takes a multi vitamin and a fish oil, sleeps 8+hrs a day, eats whatever he wants and trains smart.
He doesn’t indulge in any alleged “recovery” devices, take special pills, or even supplement with protein/creatine.

Yeah there is definitely a broader point about focusing on what makes the most difference. We like quirky, interesting things, so when we hear that something (whatever is it) can be beneficial in this way or that, we don't really stop to ask the question... How beneficial? Is it more than a negligible amount? And what's the cost? Is that effort best directed elsewhere (like into a set of black-out blinds or a sleeping mask).

The most high that I've ever felt (while being sober), was the first month or so of consistent, every-day, mindful practice of Wim Hof's breathing technique and taking cold showers. I'm telling you, I felt totally high for hours on everyday basis, and I know what it means to feel high, but none of my senses or thinking processing or emotions were influenced by any drug, but only with chemicals that occur naturally in my body. There were moments when waves of thankfulness and serotonin-like happiness passed through me, and calm joy was my natural state of being. Achieved just by 10 minutes breathing session.
Then I stopped because of.. reasons. And also you take some tolerance to those effects, like for everything.

Three things I could do to improve my life rn that's in my control:
    (1) Keep an eye on and benefit my diet. I'm not exactly an unhealthy eater but I should definitely be more focused on eating some nutrient dence foods.
    (2) Stop throughout the day to be think about my emotion and thought process so I can be more prudent in future situations and have a higher self-awareness. Maybe do this instead of scrolling through social media.
    (3) Focus and put more effort into understanding my school work. I am in my Junior year of High School and I'm taking some hard classes. I'm not exactly failing any of them but I definitely think I could do better, so if I can figure out how to retain more information I read and learn that would be amazing.

The best I ever felt in my life was after meditating for 1-2 hours per day for about 4 weeks. After a while I felt an intense heat in my belly and then one day it went into my chest and I can honestly say it was the best I ever felt. It was kind of like being on E but different, like the feeling of being freshly bathed, after a glass of wine and good sex. When I came out of it I was covered in sweat like I had been working out hard, it was crazy.

    2. Nutrition/Diet
    3. Pushing myself out of my comfort zone in all areas of life (Stepping into fear and being ok with failing)

I do not remember where I read that. But I found for myself that an amazing day has 3 parts.
    - You learned something (or you grew in some way)
    - You laughed
    - You cried
It is a combination of these 3 states of mind which trigger the most powerful experiences in your mind.
I guess you could further enhance this experiences by:
    - Being a good person (be helpful)
    - Workout for yourself
    - Eat healthy
    - start loving yourself
    TLDR;
Show emotions, workout, eat healthy, love yourself

i was thinking about the writing point a lot because on first sight it doesnt make a lot of sense. imagine you write an email... or you're in school and write shit down... i did not feel high because of that... having some thoughts spent now, what about if you really want to write something down? either it is a good memory, even a bad one... or just write about something you just learned and really focused on it. it really gives some kind of satisfaction tbh. i guess everybody should write down his lifestory :) nice vid, good content, curious what happens in the next episodes of this series!

Your description of "feeling good" is exactly what i'm trying to work on. I have terrible posture and i have constant neck pain which causes headaches and affects my vision and concentration. Poor posture also gives me random aches and pains, uneven shoulders, sore back, all sustained after terrible COVID posture while gaming. My sleep is poor and i haven't eaten enought the past year. Luckily im working on these things but i wish i fixed them before they started to influence how i feel 24/7. I'm leaving high school soon and I just want to feel how i did a few years ago. I've quit computer games, eat how i should and now do postural excersies and im seeing improvements. Hopefully once school ends and i start working (im going into a pysically demanding job) my posture and health will improve.

The key to feeling your best is living in the present moment free from your mind. Create distance from you and your thoughts and enjoy the moment you are in.

This is the first time I've come across your videos Joe. I really like this setup. I will definitely be watching the following. I really like how you balance your clear communication style with a touch of personality.
Anyway, to answer your question, I'll give you the 4 things I'm working on this month.
    1. Fitness - Got some issues with my knees so mainly focusing on physio work for them. No major goals, just consistency.
    2. Diet - Eat more fruit and veg. More homecooked whole foods. Occasional treats. Good for the body, mind and pocket.
    3. Work - I do Deliveroo mainly so I decide my schedule. It's too easy to take a day off, which then turns in to several days. So just focusing on consistency again here.
    4. Learn Italian - My girlfriend is Italian. We just got back from a trip to visit her hometown. I met so many of her friends and family who I wish I could talk to. However, most of them don't speak English. 15 mins a day on Duolingo is the goal for now. That and use what I've learned when talking with the girlfriend. So far she laughs at me a lot but that's all good. I take it as payback for all the times I've made fun of her for "being a foreign" :) (a personal joke between us made in good humor btw!)

Thanks for the video, really got me thinking
    Answer:
1 Reduce stress. I’m a student an having 5 assignments always lurking and always feeling like I’m behind schedule can be quite stressful, but working on staying calm in those situations and not let that affect my mood and stress level would greatly improve my life.
2 Improve social life. I’m quite shy and find it hard to make good friends so making more of an effort to talk to people, meet up with people and engage in social events would hopefully help a lot.
3 Work to live rather than live to work. I didn’t realise I did this until recently, but I have focused way too much of my attention on studying and way too little on the things I enjoy to do and actually being precent in my current life.
(4 Netflix binging. I think this would improve greatly if I managed to do the 3 points above, but if I stopped spending hours every day watching Netflix it would free up a lot more time to enjoy life.)

My three things within my zone of control (and these will be fairly common, I suspect):
-Get more, consistent, uninterrupted sleep each night during the optimal time period for sleep (some might call this circadian sleep period).
-Reducing or possibly eliminating my alcohol consumption. I think this is pretty straight forward. I think doing this will help me to improve mind and body.
-Putting in the time to read more. As I've gotten older, my attention span hasn't been what it used to be, and it's compounded by our modern conveniences and technologies.
Joe, this was an interesting video. I'll keep an eye out for the future segments.

    Great video and thought inspiring.
Having paused the video and took stock of my own life I decided that the 3 most pressing things that will enhance my life in some way by changing are:
    1. Reduce and completely remove my caffeine consumption - I have done this in the past and the constant energy without the peaks and troughs of a caffeine high is a much better feeling.
    2. Meditate every day for at least 10 minutes - I have meditated in the past and have found this to be beneficial for things such as stress, anxiety and all round good mental scrub. However I get to a certain point and stop as I am feeling good. This then regresses and I have to start over again. The key is consistency.
    3. Exercise daily - This doesn't mean that I need to go to the gym every day but getting out into fresh air for a walk once a day with added weight training a few times a week will help with boosting the effects of the other 2 areas of importance.
I look forward to seeing where this journey takes you and what outcomes you can find.

    Top 3 changes:
    1. Pursue the state of hyper focus every day.
    2. Quit unnecessary scrolling on social media such as youtube and instagram.
    3. Stop wasting time on thinking what a good man should be and start being one.

To answer your conclusional question; I find myself most naturally high when I let go from the structure of which I organise my life. When I wander around nature in a space I'm unfamiliar with. When I wake up and spend the first 4 or 5 hours of the day without knowing what time it is or who might've text me from the night before. When I embrace the peaceful chaos of living and let go of the endless distractions that exist in the modern world.

My three favorites are Intermittent fasting, Sleep, and Journaling. I said IF because I believe in my diet I can skip meals over eat healthy and that plan just make me use my energy right. I said sleep because to me sleep is like but better than mediation and a huge stress reliever for me. Finally I said Journaling because again a huge stress reliever for me and that's good for my confidence. 💪🤗

I salute your pursuit. Personally, I am of the opinion that the problem with such an experiment is it's an attempt to isolate something nearly everyone inevitably, inexplicably already do every day. And that the focus should not be on _the actual things_ you can do to obtain the natural high, but rather _your awareness of those things._ Because I think you will eventually find people who have already achieved what it is you're investigating. And it's finding those people, and making them aware of what it is they possess which should be the quest; not going blind into an experiment.
Further, I think it goes without saying that, even the people who deliberately and explicitly go through life chasing the natural high don't seem to have much success. And that leads me to believe, as you allude to in the introduction, that a significant portion of us have already reached our peak high, and the end goal should never actually have been achieving a "new high", but perfecting that which we were already doing to maintain our flow in mental health and fitness.
Again, I wholly respect you and your journey. Good luck.
