Perhaps no player has had such a sudden and unexpected impact at a team like Michu had at Swansea.
A bargain from Spain that Sir Alex Ferguson had “never really heard of” lit up the Premier League in his only full season in South Wales.
But how did Swansea find him? And what happened to him after that season?
Seb Stafford-Bloor writes, Henry Cooke illustrates.

It has always bothered me that people call him a one season wonder when he absolutely wasn’t. That right ankle ruined his career, and even in his second season (with no consistent game time due to injuries) he was still absolutely outstanding when he was on the pitch.
The reason his goal return was lower is because we had just signed Bony, who was scoring goals left, right and centre. This meant Michu had to drop back into a supporting role rather than a scoring one. That second season, he was still unplayable on so many occasions. His link up play between the likes of Britton, Ki, Cañas etc. and Bony upfront was incredible to watch.
He was top, top class for 2 seasons and then the right ankle injuries ended his career. Far from a one season wonder.

Read a few articles siting that he 'purchased players from clubs where he would know the agent. He would get a cut of the proceeds.' I still don't think that's true-- but that's what I read. I'm sure those rumors didn't help his case

As a Swansea fan, looking back on that transfer window really makes you realise 2 things; Our recruitment at the time was very smart, but also that for a small club we were attracting really gifted players. Michu was a fan favourite, when he had his injuries and drop in form the fans really felt sorry for him, they felt his pain and his frustration. I remember the Europa League game against St Gallen where he had a head injury and kept trying to play on despite both his head and shirt being covered in blood. He had everything you wanted from a player, as a fan, he was resilient, hardworking, talented and passionate. Although I'd say he was a second striker behind Graham, as opposed to a true midfielder, in the 4411. Bony took over the limelight during his second season and the change in playing style dynamic with that new strike partnership took some adjustment, as it wasn't as fluid as the season before. But he will always be a fan favourite and his iconic celebration will live on.

Michu was a one-season wonder and became a cult-phenomenon. Like that band that makes a solid debut album and vanishes. You guys were left wondering and he become a fantasy boy. The same could've happened with Liverpool's Cissé if he decided to stop playing after season 2004-2005, a season he broke his leg and then won the Champions League. We all know Cissé's next seasons were just good. Michu was, above it all, entertaining. Just like Cissé, Javier Saviola or late Michael Owen.

I knew what became of him because as soon as he disappeared I was asking where he went. He made such a crazy impact that it was improbable to me that he could just fall off the face of football. Deeply unfortunate what happened to him. Chronic ankle pain in your 30's too, that sucks.
