Stamford Bridge, in York, was the site of a famous battle in 1066 where England's newly-crowned King Harold Godwinson and his army defeated the invading Viking army of Harold Hardrada. The battle is famous because it marked the end of three centuries of Viking raids into England and because King Harold had to return south immediately after the battle to fight against the invading Duke William of Normandy at the more famous Battle of Hastings.
Yep and there is a folk tale about how there was one Danish viking who was blocking the English from crossing the bridge. I found this quite funny as I found this out when Chelsea won the champions league and Christensen was having a standout season. Felt very much like history was repeating itself there
@@joshbrown2217 To add to that, the viking was so effective at defending the bridge that the English had to send a man in a barrel to stab the viking from underneath the bridge.
@@joshbrown2217The invaders stopped in 1066 were Norwegian and not danish though. King Harald Hardråde (often translated as harsh ruler), was king of Norway, and his army mostly consisted of veterans from the Varangian guard and Norwegian Levy's. The big viking on the bridge was most likely Norwegian. Just like Rollo, the ancestor of the Norman's, most likely was from around Aalesund in Norway. Although because of the danification of Norwegian history during our time of being ruled from Denmark through a personal union of the crowns, the Danes have claimed a lot of things that are known to be Norwegian, as danish. Maybe that's where the confusion comes from.

@mikeroyce8926 Thanks you! Grew up half a mile from Craven Cottage in the days of Johnny Haynes….supported Chelsea just to be different as everyone around me were big Fulham fans. I must admit, I’ve always hated the Chelsea/ Fulham derby games as I’m secretly conflicted having so many friends and family being Fulham fans.
I know Fulham fans hate us, but I quite like them. The plucky underdogs who, in fairness, do actually overachieve and do quite well (despite the yo-yo club status). Their miraculous escape from relegation to playing in the Europa League final only 2 years later was frankly legendary, and I've had a soft spot for them ever since. Legitimately have a strong dislike for Diego Forlan for scoring the winner in that game lol

Rare to see a video talking about my club - and what a video it was. Fantastic channel, and informative even for someone who knew quite a chunk about Fulham's history already.
Got this video on an autoplay. I checked to see how many subscribers the channel had thinking it would have 1M+... I was shocked. Great work quality video!
Fascinating! Speaking from Carlisle…..I get really interested in London football. The location and identity of fans and club loyalty is really interesting
W vid. Stamford bridge is also in the north of england, where there was a battle for the english throne in 1066 (looks like i actually learned something from year 5 history)
There is a story about the daughter if Earl Spencer wanting to go to a Chelsea match. She booked a cab from the family estate in Northamptonshire, the driver put Stamford Bridge into the satnav, and the satnav took them to the small town in North Yorkshire.
@ranvirsharma7095 Poor Harold Godwinson. In any other year his victory at Stamford Bridge would have been a Gigachad moment of legend but he only got to bask in his glory for about two weeks before getting wrecked by William the Conqueror on the other end of the country.

That Roman Abramovich cameo got me 😂
