Graceful yet powerful. Predictable yet unstoppable. Thierry Henry was an artist of a striker. He scored goals that should be framed and hung in a gallery. He was extraordinary. But he wasn’t always.
This is the story of Thierry Henry’s rise, from the housing projects of Paris, to the glittering lights of Highbury, via left wing-back in Italy.

Not sure how this didn't get a mention:
Henry picking up the ball on the half turn in the centre circle before swivelling, beating 4 players and slotting past Iker Casillas, scoring the only goal for Arsenal in a 1-0 win against Real Madrid in February 2006. Making them the first English team to secure victory over Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeau.
Historic, Iconic, Legendary.
Watching Ronaldo bounce off him was insane

This comment perfectly depicts life as an Arsenal fan in their late 20s. I cannot fathom how close this hits home. This year is a bit more fun than most.
dude was a beast, one of the PL all time greats. I recommend checking Football Iconic's video on Henry
Thierry scored 44 goals across two seasons in Barcelona while playing as an left winger, including a brace against Real Madrid in a 6-2 thrashing at the Bernabeu.
Also, Henry was a creator, still holding the record of most assists in one Premier League season (20 in 2002-03), having 74 assists for Arsenal in the Premier League only.
Yeah they didnt mention assists at all in the video
Along with Bergkamp, he really was an unstoppable force to reckon with, every single magic on his feet.
Wow, I didn't even know that. There is an argument that he is one of the all time greats.
@@anthonymcken6050 Absolutely there is. League titles and cups at Arsenal, including being the spearhead of the Invincibles league team, won everything at Barca, and everything with France. An EPL, FA Cup, La Liga, Copa Del Rey, UCL, World Cup, and European Championship winner, all while producing some of the most breathtaking footballing ability seen in the 21st century. He's certainly on the top 10 list of the greatest players over the last 20 years, along with legends like Messi, CR7, R9, Zidane, Figo, Ronaldinho, Xavi, and Iniesta.
The assist is still a record to this day.
I love when Tifo retrospectively looks back at the playing style tactically of legends. That’s something that RUclips highlight reels and wiki can’t do in enough details to capture the essence. They need to do this more for the younger generation. Next should be Steven Gerrard
Hope it shows him slipping
@@tremensdelirious Hope it mentions City bottling the UCL every season.
@@liverbot4854 hope it shows you attending a football match and not watching it on TV 🤪
Nah, I would rather see Phil Neville, he had such an underrated career from what I've seen.
Facts.
When Henry went back to Arsenal on loan in 2012, he debuted as a sub and scored the winner in the third round of the FA Cup.
I'm a Leeds fan, but even I clapped at how perfect that moment was!
I want the old school top 4 back Arsenal, Leeds, Liverpool & United 🥲
Henry is one of those players that was a joy to watch even if he was putting 4 past your own team in your own back yard
Still the best player to grace the English division football. A bit of Zidane elegance mixed with R9 forward ability. Thierry is class.
To focus on his goalscoring almost does him and his talents a disservice; he was so much more 🤩
Thierry Henry is for me, the best player we’ve seen in the Premier League.
My father wore 14 back in the early 80’s because of a certain Dutch legend who wore 14 😉
I grew up in the early 2000’s wearing 14 and ironically having the name Henry.
It was a funny situation, and I naturally liked Henry at that time. He was a fantastic player… but truly with every year that goes by his legend only increases. His expressions, goal celebrations, style, and wit- he was the man. Like Tom cruise in an F-14…. Thierry had balls to be inventive and to take a game over. His mind was that of an artist, he would have been great at whatever he did- but thank God his passion was football. He has to be my favorite player all time. Anytime I see some of his top highlights it still puts a smile on my face grinning from ear to ear.
Henry is my favorite player growing up which is odd since I was a Chelsea fan. He looked like he wasn't even trying whenever he would stride and was so clinical in finishing. Unfortunately his decline was in 09/10 season at age 31 where he scored only 4 goals and was given permission by Barcelona to leave for the MLS. I really hoped he would continue to play at the top of European football for 3 or 4 more years but the decline was obvious and seeing it as a 17 yr felt like my hero idol is gone forever 😔
He was 32--years old during the 2009/2010 season, not 31-years old.
Even as a Tottenham fan, I love Henry (except when playing against us). An exquisite player. Although there is a myth that he was some kind of bargain and an example of Wenger's master of the transfer market. 11.5 million was a huge fee back then - but hidden in the huge profit of the Anelka to RM deal
Cherish Kane while he's here not alot of top striker's nowadays
Sure 11.5 million was still serious money in 1999 but it was undoubtedly a legendary piece of business to spend just a fraction of the Anelka money on a player that Juve had written off as a rubbish winger who went on to become a legendary goal scorer, who at his peak could easily have been sold to oil rich Chelsea for many times what he cost arsenal
@@unstoppableExodia agree 100% about his quality and status in the game. And even more that he seems to genuinely be a good bloke! I just wanted to make clear he wasn’t exactly a bargain saved from Juve
@@stephenpalmer9375 fair enough. I suppose a modern equivalent would be Mohamed Salah who some fans have claimed was a bargain when in fact he cost well over 30 million which is far from chump change. Really his and Henry’s transfers could be better labeled an excellent piece of business for the buying clubs
@@unstoppableExodia exactly!
Great video with some new details for me. Many freedom of contract signings made in those early post-Bosman years ended up in messy disputes, most famously Figo. I didn't know Henry was one of them. Then the loathsome Moggi trying to send Henry to Udinese at one point is hilarious.
Should've said more about his France career! He was fantastic in Euro 2000, and very good in the 06 world cup too. Not to mention the confederations cup in 03. All time top scorer and 5 time French player of the year (more than anyone else) was a great achievement considering the talent that has played for France.
A lot of people like to sidestep that due to the handball drama being either against the tone of the video or requiring more time to do justice than they have.
But yeah he was great with France. I became a fan of France in 2006 just because I like nation's history and needed a team for the world cup. What a pick that ended up being.
My favourite player of all time and best player I’ve seen in person. I remember a goal at Villa park, he torn us to shreds and his goal was applauded by many of us home fans, he was that good.
thanks for having subtitles🙏
The reason I started watching football was Henry. I remember randomly switching channels and stopping because he'd score a wonderful goal (highlights were on). I'm sure there'll be many others who got into watching the sport because of him.
When Ronaldinho calls someone a beautiful player, you know just how good he was then.
A Footballing legend and idol to so many more.
Man , Henry was ridiculously good!He was Ruud Van Nisterlrooy(finishing)+ Kevin De Bruyne (passing)+ Theo Walcott (speed)+ Bergkamp (technically gifted) in one body! He was THAT good!
Typical bs. He wasn't as technically gifted as Bergkamp, nor had a conversion rate as RVN . He was the better all rounder, but lets not exaggerate these points.
As a lifetime Arsenal fan, having to choose between Henry and Bergkamp as my favourite player is always a difficult thing. Bergkamp just shades it, but what a couple of players to choose from.
100% agree it's so difficult to choose between the two but i also agree and say Bergkamp just tips it as my favourite
Bergkamp was such a joy to watch. He had an absolutely sublime first touch and technique. He had such an aura of calmness about him too, to the point where it felt like time slowed down when he had the ball at his feet.
As a kid though, Henry was always my idol. He had a knack for creating goals out of nothing and was probably the most complete forward of his era in that he could score or set up any type of goal from any part of the pitch.
Bergkamp is my favorite due to his touch, but how spoiled we were to have those two as our forwards. Will for the foreseeable future be the greatest ever PL pairing.
Bergkamp really was such a joy, but I prefer Henry since he could do both scoring and opening the score.
Bergkamp was class. But Henry was better. But with the youtube comp' a lot of people started to overrate Bergkamp.
I'm biased because i'm an Arsenal fan, but i'd say he's the best of the PL era. Not only because of his track record, but the way he made you fall in love with football.
One of the reason why there are so many Arsenal fans is because of this man. He made the game more beautiful to watch when he played. Igwe!!!
Outstanding player. A true natural at the sport, and made exceptional playing look effortless. Great rundown of his brilliant career!
How did this guy not win a Ballon d’Or?! Absolutely scandalous!
I cherish the days I got to watch him do something magical week in and week out for my local club new york red bull. Even in the twilight of his career, he always brought something magical
I do find the comparisons with Kylian Mbappe curious. On paper their achievements by the age of 23 are pretty similar, however, the type of goals scored by Henry are significantly more varied and spectacular. And whilst they’re comparable re technical ability and intelligence, as of yet Mbappe hasn’t demonstrated the same level of playmaking creativity or shear physicality to dominate defenders (outside of his speed).
100% agreed. Kylian is somewhere between R9 and Henry. His game is more of a shark attack on goal scoring similar to R9 than Henry’s technical playmaking. Henry was a winger at heart and a striker by trade. Kylian is also not as strong as R9 or Henry so I seem him uniquely like an arrow.
@@nmarcus7233 Kylian is muscular, but he's halfway there
Mbappe is more like Anelka. Henry is utterly unique, there will never be another player like him.
@@lexkanyima2195 Right. I don’t really see Kylian fighting physical defenders holding up play with his back to goal. I think he’d purely just like the ball at his feet.
One might forget that this cool pundit is quite a legend in the game. Good reminder 😄
even as a man united fan I cant lie Henry is and will always be premier league goat 🐐
It's all we've got invincibles & Henry best Prem player 😅
I'm glad people can't deny this fact. But as a Gooner myself, I also somewhat admired Eric Cantona, too.
I think that his the greatest premier league player. What Cantona did he took it to another level.
@@anthonymcken6050 Couldn't agree more, mate.
What a beautiful video. Henry made me love football. Absolute Legend of the game.
It's funny how I grew up as a Chelsea fan and admired Henry so much as a rival fan because he was just that good. My biggest heartbreak was 02 fa cup final as a kid against Arsenal which we lost. But boy, look how the past 2 decades have changed from then.
Henry was the blueprint that Ronaldo + Messi built their success on. Super fast but his striking was out of this world! "That goal" against Man U? I've never seen any player do that! It was a crime he didn't start the WC Final....
He was a man made for the moment. The EPL becoming the dominant league in club soccer and Arsenal on the way up. The current generation of footballers idolize him the way the next will remember Ronaldo and Messi.
Arsenal owes their current transfer clout to this man. A generation grew up on his game. And I'm a long suffering fan in large part to this man 🙏🏾
Dominant leauge..English clubs won two out eight champions leauges in Henry's time
Greatest PL player of all time
The video missed out his assists / how fundamental he was in wenger ball and just how talismanic he was at arsenal. His assists and scoring in the same season I believe still is yet to be matched. KDB only recently equalled the assist record.
He was also incredible in achieving this while whole teams set up just to stop him. Unselfish, team oriented and he played the game with unbridled joy.
I remember going to arsenal and it might be 0-0 or even behind at 70mins. And there was just a feeling, even if we had a bad game, that doesn’t matter. If he was having a quiet game, it doesnt matter.
Because at some point, he would just turn it on. A magical run, tormenting that back line. All it needed was a bit of va va voom
Truly robbed of the ballon d'or. Because he was the best player in the world when he was at arsenal
Yeah also found it weird they didnt mention his assists
He was very direct, but graceful.
Once he figured it out, he could score from anywhere in the offensive 3rd. CLASS
What a lovely player he was. Glided past defenders with ease and always had a knack for goal
If you’ve never watched Thierry Henry during his Arsenal days, you would never understand why he should’ve been awarded the world’s best player at some point.
My idol, my icon. His influence as a footballer and a person is part of what raised me and who I am.
I'm an American but henry is my favorite. When I was like 5 I would travel to France and my cousins over there just raved over Henry.
watching Henry playing at Highbury was pure magic. It was my first years watching european football and each Premier League round was guaranteed to see him shine
My favorite player, and the most enjoyable to watch
He's learned a lot from his ex-managers, so hopefully he'll become a very good manager and manage Arsenal in the future. Vieira has shown that he's got a good managerial experience
Prime Henry only falls short to Prime R9 as a striker so that speaks volumes as to how good he was
Maybe Mbappé will have a better career, but the classical elegance, speed and leadership of Henry is incomparably.
he's the emperor of just 1 club, but henry is indubitably the king of PL players throughout the time, so in the end henry wins again lol
Henry played on two legendary teams Kylian won't beat that.
Mbappe only has a lot of speed and learned to finish with precision and power in the last few years. He is very effective, but he is nowhere near as classy or creative as Henry
He'll have to get out of the farmer's league to stand a chance
@@mikem8211 french football is the best center of young talents. That's is almost an african league being disputed in Europe. Many talents coming out from there to best leagues every season.
Henry made me love the game and become an Arsenal fan. True world class player.
Henry's football was beautiful and breathtaking.
I spent 4 years in england shortly after I was born. I was so young that I barely remember what my old house or school looked like. I remember Henry. I watched him and the whole Arsenal team and to this day, it is my favorite club and he is my favorite player. He is the reason I love this sport.
Thanks for staying loyal while half of North London now supports Chelsea 👍
Even as a Spurs fan i have to admit that Henry is one of the best players in Premier league history. A class act.
Henry not winning the 2003 balon d'or is the biggest robbery in the award's history (Lewandowski's lack of a balon d'or during covid notwithstanding)
One of the best players I've seen live and possibly my favourite not to have played for my club.
A class act and an intelligent player and man off the pitch too.
Without a doubt my favourite football player of all time. I recognise that cr7 and Messi are indisputably the goats of football, but Thierry is my personal GOAT of the game.
Doesn't really help that I'm an Arsenal supporter but ya know. What's football without a bit of bias?
Its a real shame he never won the Ballon d´Or. You can easily make the case he could have won it in any of the years between 2002 and 2006.
Bruh I can't believe three world famous footballers came from the same building that's crazy
Weird I was watching the other Henry video Football Iconic made last night! Thank you for this! I was too young to appreciate Henry but always loved watching his footage.
Not just a great goal scorer, but a scorer of great goals.
Best premier League player ever. Top 5 players of all time!
He will be the first to acknowledge _Arsene Wenger's_ role. Irresistible combination of coach and player!
His talent was obvious from a young age and he had some eye catching appearances at the World Cup. I couldn’t believe Juve were letting him go & that Arsenal were signing him. Was hoping it would be Liverpool getting him, not even sure if we asked about him. Amazing player and he made the right decision going to Arsenal, amazing career
In Liverpool, he probably would have ended up the same way just like him in Barcelona.

Greatest player to play in the Premier league
What a legend great video
Best player ever. Argue with yourself.
The king ❤️
Speaking as an American, I didn't get into football until after the 2002 World Cup. And I remember getting up early to watch the Premier League when it was on, and while there were a lot of great players I liked, the only one that made me go "WOW" was Henry. He's still probably my favorite player, because while I may have ended up supporting Fulham, Henry turned me from someone who was curious about the sport into a dedicated fan.
.....well, that and Championship Manager. XD
Fulham? Respect for not glory hunting 🙌
He played like a gazelle. I can't think of a better way to describe him
This guy narrates his mini documentaries splendidly
I AM GLAD THE KING HENRY GOT HIS UCL TROPHY AT BARCA. Won everything .
The Goat
Henry was more important for barcelonas treble winning season than you make out,he had a higher goal and assist ratio per game than even samuel etoo who had his best season as striker in his entire career while henry achieved what he did playing on the left and doing defensive work, theres a reason barca fans adore him.
He also had more g and a in the ucl knockout stages than etoo as well and well dominated the classicos in his time at barcelona.
Henry also won the Supporters Shield with New York in MLS. So England, France, Spain, and the US.
My all time favourite footballer
He won every thing. World cup, premier League, uefa, fa cup, la Liga.
Another lovely video, Henry will be pleased to see it.
The king from premier league
My favorite player of all time, today you dont have players like in late 90s and 2000-2010, peak of football.
the french gazelle, a nickname like no other and suited so well to describe the amazing henry
He was fast but also very skilful. People say Mbappe is his heir but personaly I think that Kylian isn't even half the player Henry was.
They forgot to mention that he became an incredible announcer and is about to on coaching.
That trademark fall on the floor finish was legendary Henry- Chelsea fan
He was one of the best players in the decade preceding the period of Ronaldo-Messi dominance, alongside Ronaldinho, Kaka, Pirlo, Lampard, Totti, etc.
I was really sad when Lehmann fouled Eto'o as they were in top form and would've won that final.
henry just had class
The King... played football like a swan on a lake.
Loved Henry
I packed his prime icon since I watched his first match for arsenal I’m a big fan of him
Joe's voice is a treasure
He’s the best
I used to imitate his signature finish (come from left and place the ball to the right) a lot back then lol
Best Player to ever grace the premier league
Wow, I didn't expect to learn anything new but I did. I had no idea he almost signed for Real Madrid.
