  • In this video, we explain how our Ocean Cleanup system 001, works. System 001 was launched in September 2018 and was the world’s first cleanup system to be trialed in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly/371k8sN
    The ocean is big. Cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch using conventional methods - vessels and nets - would take thousands of years and tens of billions of dollars to complete. Our passive systems are estimated to remove half the Great Pacific Garbage patch in just five years, and at a fraction of the cost. Our first cleanup system will be deployed in the summer of 2018. This is how it works.
    --
    Trash accumulates in five ocean garbage patches, the largest one being the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located between Hawaii and California. If left to circulate, the plastic will impact our ecosystems, health, and economies. Solving it requires a combination of closing the source, and cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean.

    "The fleet is expected to clean up 50% percent of the great pacific garbage patch every 5 years". Even if it turned out to be less, it would still be an insane amount!

      there's no way this claim can be aimed at all the plastic in the garbage patch, only the visable surface. There's metric tons of plastic they're missing to even mention, they're likey getting less than 10% if even 1% of the total mass of the plastic, certainly not removing it faster than the ocean is currently taking in. The deep underwater currents are trapping untold amounts of plastic. Cleaning the surface will cover up the problem for a time

      They've done studies to check where most of the plastic is, and found it to be at the surface. See this: www.theoceancleanup.com/updates/ocean-plastic-within-reachable-cleanup-depths/ , as well as this video which explains a lot: ruclips.net/video/du5d5PUrH0I/видео.html
      They've also done extensive modelling, and the predictions show that cleanup will be faster than accumulation. Do you have any credible sources that states otherwise?

      I wouldn't call them douchebags. The people most likely just have no other option than dumping the trash in the ocean and rivers. Their countries' waste management systems are just not developed enough to handle the amount of trash they produce. The people who dump the trash probably don't like it either. Also many of the worst offending countries are really committed to fixing the problem.

      It is not only people dumping plastic directly into the ocean. It is all of us when we consume this type of long-lasting light materials (mostly plastic). It usually finds its way to the ocean through rivers or wind. It can take it year but eventually get there.

      iMaDeMoN zero waste? Not possible, let’s stick to feasible solutions first.

    • @lorenwilson8128
      @lorenwilson8128 4 года назад

      Unfortunately, truly zero waste requires infinite energy. This is an unfortunate side-effect of the universe we live in, codified in the three laws of thermodynamics. However, the more access a country has to affordable electricity, the less harmful waste is emitted. Instead, we have more efficient homes, recycling, catalytic converters, scrubbers on smoke stacks, sanitary landfills, and sewage treatment plants. Poor countries burn what they can because they don't have clean natural gas. They use rivers as garbage dumps.

      I'd been thinking that we need a technological solution,one that can largely run by itself,to help address a problem of this magnitiude. Great that this is being done. But it baffles me that so many people dirty up their own back yard and that of others by throwing the stuff just anywhere in the first place.

      Ralph even if it worked as hoped, they are only skimming the surface particles and most of the dangerous smaller particles are deeper below the surface. This is just a Band-Aid, the solution is to keep the plastic from entering the ocean in the first place

    • @rjjcms1
      @rjjcms1 5 лет назад

      @@busybody1474 I agree totally. It's just that with the amount of stuff already out there being so huge it's going to be beyond mammoth as an undertaking to clean it all up,so if some technological device(s) can be set up that can work quietly away nibbling at it with a limited maintenance requirement that should help a bit. Or have I strayed into the realm of perpetual motion machines here?

  • @Larkinchance

    The discussion should be... Around 1980 plastic began to replace glass on store shelves. Plastic was cheaper and dramatically cut shipping costs. Glass is inert and doesn't impact the environment like plastic does. This looming crisis is just beginning. The only solution is to go back to glass or biodegradable and the large corporations are not about to do this. This is why this story does not come up on cable news or commercial TV. Where is public broadcasting? I guess they have been bought off too.

  • @nhopez
    @nhopez 5 лет назад +263

    I agree with everyone this is great, but...it now falls on us to BUY the products generated from ocean-retrieved plastic in order to economically sustain this project. Otherwise they will never be able to reach their goals and clean the ocean!

      Fflint Corporations have shifted the responsibility from the manufacturers (producing less plastic/better forms of packaging) onto the consumers (recycling). But the problem is, most of the plastics entering the oceans originate from under-developed nations that do not have anti-litter laws or recycling programs/facilities. The pressure needs to be put on manufacturers to re-evaluate the way they package products

    • @MrUND3RSC0R3
      @MrUND3RSC0R3 5 лет назад +3

      Not exactly underdeveloped, China and Indonesia outputting more than all other countries combined . By saying most plastics originate from "under-developed nations" comes off pretty close to trying to say the other nations are doing well to tackle their waste/pollution. Reminder that the USA is still in the top 10 countries polluting the oceans and north american rivers are not any cleaner in some to most areas. We're still in the early years of cleanup and the realization that we even had to, both China and Indonesia could beat our goals with the manpower and resources they posses

    Great video and great idea. Until they show the part where they magically turn plastic into sunglasses. Suddenly the whole project looks very suspicious to me. Recycling the waste will be borderline imposible, at least from a financial and technical perspective. You cannot just take all plastic, run it through a machine and get sunglasses. You will need a great deal of logistics, technology, energy and other resources to recycle just a % of the collected plastic, probably a much more difficult project than cleaning the ocean itself, which is pretty difficult already

    This is fantastic, and congratulations to all involved. The key though is to prevent anything like this happening in the future. Plastic industry engineers and managers all around the world must take a hard look at this challenge again, and again and see what they are doing because plastic products won't just evaporate in the future! We must find sustainable green solutions here too. Best, Paul

      India does not have trash collection organized by their governments yet, but are working on it. China recycles there waste. The problem is global not country specific. To point fingers at who produces, makes or throws away the most rubbish is not going to make the situation better, because it distract from working at reducing the waste in the first place. I think you can only ask people to clean up their act if you yourself can stop your own burning up of resources. That is nearly impossible in this modern world where everyone wants the latest Iphone. We need to seriously look at global warming, soil erosion, water saving methods, placing huge amounts of solar panels in all the deserts on every southern continent and wind and wave energy on the northern hemisphere. We would not have any energy issues then, it just means we peoples would have to work together. But war and capitalistic interests prevent those ideas.

      They have to prove that it exists, the burden of proof is on them.
      They haven’t shown one shred of credible evidence that this “garbage patch that’s 3 times the size of Texas” is out there floating in the Pacific Ocean.
      All they do is show silly cartoons or computer animations. Where’s the aerial photos or satellite pictures of this thing?
      Why are there people who were on the fishing business or trans-Pacific shipping industry for *decades* who are saying this thing isn’t there?
      Absence of evidence is evidence of absence.
      The “Pacific Garbage Patch” is a hoax right up there with crop circles and Bigfoot.

    • @user-do5zk6jh1k
      @user-do5zk6jh1k 5 лет назад +2

      Stefan Zijlstra Not an issue. All systems are being carried by natural fluid movement. Since they are carried by fluids, they move like fluids. When you get two currents moving converging, they start to redirect themselves upstream to start joining in the same direction of flow. The only time you don't get this happening is with water falling with gravity or supersonic flow (both are obviously not present here). Because of these reasons, two systems being carried by converging currents would probably not collide and instead end up travelling in the same direction parallel to each other. At most, they would collide with very low relative velocity.

    I think this video and the company's website are misleading. While a very honorable goal this organization still seems to be very early in the the prototype phase. A fully operational infrastructure that gathers the plastic waste as described, transports it to land where it is sorted, recycled and turned into new products to be resold seems a lot further away than the two years projected. Especially considering the expectations that the sale of the plastic waste will finance the operation.

    Hi Guys i really respect your Work but in my Opinion this is a bit useless at the Moment. 90% of the new Plastic Worldwide ist coming from 10 Rivers. I think the World has to Focus first to Stop new Plastic coming straight from this Rivers. Please think about it! Theres no Point in fishing the waste Out while somewhere else hunderes of Tons get in again. Please Like it so they See it!

      But, the plastic problem solution isn't just one solution.... It's a network of solutions all put together on our earth to work on the problems... Of course the sources of pollution waste is a huge part of the plastic problem in our waters but reducing the plastic garbage patch is a good area to tackle now!.. Save marine habitat now.. Don't wait until the sources have been reduced!

    • @christinakapl2882

      There is actually another company that's already planning on this problem. Pacific Garbage Screening want to create a filter system that filters out microplastic from rivers preventing it to arrive in the oceans. Due to the usage of water flow and temperature fishes still can pass, so there is no interference with wildlife.
      They're still in the phase of producing their first prototype, but I hope in combination those projects will be very effective to sea and water pollution.
      Here's a TED Talk of the inventor: ruclips.net/video/gPCKj5xzmME/видео.html
      Here the system's being explained (it's in german, but the illustration maybe help as well): ruclips.net/video/q6FQXfjJzSA/видео.html
      The website: www.pacific-garbage-screening.de
      What I think should also be considered about 'the ocean cleanup': In their videos they explain that the caught plastic of the pacific would be recycled and reused for new plastic products.
      A) A lot of plastics is actually NOT recycable, so I guess the majority of the waste would be burned anyways. This would be however be used for energy production, so I guess it would at least be a little use for society and the plastic would be gone afterwards.
      B) Using the rest of the recycable plastic to produce new plastic products. In their videos they're showing sunglasses as an example. The world will not be able to work as before without plastic at all, but shouldn't we try to reduce the creation of new plastic products where items get thrown away quickly? Like Sunglasses made of plastic?! To me it doesn't make too much sense to fish out plastic trash from the ocean to produce new 'fast fashion' and quick consumption goods out of it that lands in the trash again quickly and maybe ends up in the ocean anyways.
      C) Plastic can't be recycled forever. You can recycle some kinds of plastic once, maybe twice or thrice, but at some point it's not possible to recycle and reuse it. So please let's work on a solution to only use plastic when there's no other material option.

      Alright then, do you have any alternatives to clean plastics efficiently than this? , If you have it, do it if you can.
      If you don't have it, then watch what others are doing and at least support them if you can instead of casting doubts

    • @derrinurban6094
      @derrinurban6094 5 лет назад +3

      Firstly you assume that this clean plastics efficiently, which is pretty highly suspect. Secondly, why would I support it if it is a fantasy. They have brushed aside any sort of critical peer review on the science involved by stating that it is something they will solve at some point in time. If they truly were engineers and scientists, they would embrace peer review and comment because this is how real advancements are made. It just doesn't play well with the fundraising to do that.

      Clearly, I don't. As a mechanical engineer, I have read through all the literature and watched all the videos. I was impressed with the idea and as most here thought "how clever". Then I read the articles written by experts in the fields who have expressed serious reservations and concerns about the project. The only response to those concerns was silence or at best a dismissive statement that those concerns will be solved at some point by somebody, someday, ....
      Yes clearly I don't understand.

These are not just loud words but great actions. You are a role model. Contrary to the Glasgow climate summit participants who flew in private planes, which produced a lot of pollution.
    It's a big deal to make a big garbage truck like this in the ocean. The use of sea currents for it means that science is constantly evolving. It is a pity that I learn about you from English lessons, and not from the news on TV or the Internet. Good luck with your continued environmental efforts.
