my understanding based on multiple sources is that the artifact was a weapon from hell the ancient martians stole so it couldn't be used against them by the demons.
Hugo was saying that the Hell in Doom 3 is canon and in AG part 1 in the hell levels there is on the map an area called Betruger castle , i know it is more of an ester egg but would be cool in the next Doom game to find his skull wonder if it still hold power and is still alive . I think the Hell from Doom 3 in some shape or form will return , with Hugo comments how he likes to so a Lovecraftian version of Hell , it might happen in the next Quake game maybe as well if all will be connected , the Myker transfiguration , the higher mysterious entity and whatever other mysteries .

there's another place called "Ishi" which is the name of the scientist that you try to save from the start of Doom 3.
