      not only lighting, the animation is different, in 2016 they look more "active" and alive, you can see the whole entire body moving, in eternal they look more static and synthetic it give a feeling of unfinished animation on a 3d model amateur project.

    I feel Doom 2016 went for a horror vibe and Eternal a classic arcade shooter. I loved both!

    I love the comparison someone mentioned on twitter of Doom to Evil Dead, the first one (2016) is the dark one, the second one is the fun one (Eternal), and the third is the medieval one (The Dark Ages)

    My guess is the aesthetic changes for eternal were for gameplay reasons. Hard to notice a fleshy, bloody enemy against a fleshy, bloody background in eternal when you're dashing and zipping with a grappling shotgun. So I imagined they made the enemies stand out more.

      That and the Barron were my only problem with the design changes they made. I litterally didn't mind the other things but adding eyes to the hell knight was weird as shit and completely scrapping the iconic pink Barron was dumb they could've used the design in specific levels and environments or just have it be like a stronger version of the barron.

    The huge thing is the people hat the lighting effects have been toned down, to not make everything look super wet, and the idle animations are more static.

      The idle animation being more static makes a lot more sense for a model viewer, definitely a good change
      Though being able to cycle through animations and pause them would obviously be the best thing but not a lot of games do that

    The demons in 2016 in my opinion are a lot scarier because they look more organic and fleshy meanwhile the demons in eternal have a more comic book like appearance to them. Not to mention that despite the hordes in 2016 being smaller, the demons took a lot of hits to kill

      That's why I never understood why people said at the time that Eternal was harder. Maybe he's less forgiving if you waste ammo, but you are much faster and you hit way harder.

      I remember in 2016 it was the last fight before the spider mastermind and I killed everything but this one baron, no ammo no chainsaw fuel I had to spend a good 20 minutes running around taking pot shots at it with the pistol, had to do the same for the spider mastermind during the fist bit before it drops ammo

      @@carnage51037 Yeah. There are a lot of moments in this game where you’re just completely stuck with no amo. In Eternal you never feel like you’re running low on amo because you can chainsaw as much as you want as long as you wait for the cooldown or find fuel, but in 2016 the chainsaw is more like a last resort if you are REALLY running low on amo or just need to kill a demon immediately. 2016 just feels a lot less forgiving

      What are you all talking about, 1 of my main complaints with doom 2016 is it is braindead piss easy, way easier than eternal. if you run out of ammo even in nightmare you suck at the game. The game gives you way to much ammo
      The only enemy in 2016 you ever have to worry about even in nightmare is imps and their fireballs, you move faster than pretty much every enemy in that game. Just circle strafe them and they can virtually never hit you.

      @@1RogerGore it was significantly more fast paced, certain weapons are intentionally superior against certain enemies while others are inferior at combatting certain enemies, etc. From a visual game design perspective, it serves the function of the game better if you could make out enemies more distinctly across both other enemies and the environment likewise to make the game more fluid to play moment to moment and less confusing. Doom 2016’s art style simply wouldn’t have worked in eternal, it would have been significantly more confusing to identify enemies across the board especially in quick reaction moments where every single second counts and every movement could either mean the player’s death or completion of a segment.

      Lol because a lot of them ARE an unholy combination of flesh and metal. Demons like the Revenant, Mancubus, and Cyberdemon all have mechanical parts grafted onto them. The DOOM Eternal demons look like that too.

      I agree the 2016 monsters look more visceral, though I think this video leaves out the destructible body parts that really make the doom eternal monsters feel less cartoonish and more fleshy as the chain gun peels flesh from their bones

      Lol yeah good point... It's probably because they already used the name "Cyberdemon" for the first boss of 2016 which doesn't really look like the original Cyberdemon aside from the arm cannon.

      They have all the rights to the Cyberdemon name, so they can do what they want. But since it was always the biggest baddie in the OG games, they should just make him one of the final bosses in the new game, or if they wanna go really oldskool, put several Cyberdemons in several levels.

    I think what really set the 2016's renditions were how inhuman they looked. The ones in Eternal at least resembled the original DOOM's sprites, but the grotesque shapes of the faces, lack of pupils or just almost everything else about them really set them apart.

      The ones in eternal look like cartoon versions of what the devs were trying to acchieve in the original doom games. They looked like claymation because... they had to use claymation. Not because they wanted them to look like claymation.
      Cyberdemon looks ridivulous because they went in with 0 art direction and straight up copied the original Puppets. Awfull way to bring a design from the 90s into a game with 2020 graphics.

    I like arcadey Doom but Doom 2016 is one of the few instances where the contemporary styling was just vastly superior, it felt like a real step down in Eternal. I still love Eternal, but I wish they’d just carried on the excellent strides they made. Mainly I just wish there was justice for that insane 2016 Mancubus design.

      I partially agree with that sentiment. I like the looks of some of the Doom Eternal demons better, and some from 2016 better. I like the idle animations and lighting of 2016 a lot more though.

    I think the best comparison of subtlety is that 2016 is the one trying to wink wink nudge nudge you into seeing what's going on, and eternal just barges in says "oh for christ's sake" and just spills it

    I think why I love 2016 more is that I associate these Demons with their Death Animations for the Slayer, meanwhile Eternal has none and you either fall over or explode into a cloud of guts

    I like that they tried a return to original characters but I think the doom 2016 designs look better, fresh, alien, and original, while still retaining the essence of easily identifiable types of enemies

      imo it might be because the original characters were claymation and worked better pixelated so it wasnt as noticeable they were figures, the styling of modern games just does not suit it as well as the original doom did. the 2016 designs are better for the modern games because it changed the style choices to match what kinda 3D spaces are used today.

      I think 2016 did most of them much better, with few exceptions, like the Imp in Eternal looks like a straight out upgrade over the 2016 Imp, like their Imp factories just got better :D
      The baron of hell also IMO looks better in Eternal, simply because it looks the same, but with an upgrade.
      Everything else IMO looks much better in 2016, ESPECIALLY the cyberdemon, which in Eternal looks like shit. It uses literally the same design as in the first DOOM, which already looked dated like hell, but bringing it in crisp 3d like this makes it look like a plastic toy... The 2016 cyberdemon was the peak of perfection!

    The key difference is glossiness and color which gives it the feel of living flesh. Second thing would probably be the animation of flesh just moving around and having life to it which makes it more satisfying to rip and tear.

    They went overboard on comic book looking aesthetics with the demons and the Doomslayer for Eternal. 2016 seemed way more gritty and organic that it's just so otherworldly and graphic.

      There’s two reasons
      1. To pay homage to the OG games, especially since eternal is more similar to them than 2016
      2. Visual identification-enemies are designed far more to be visually unique so you can easily identify them in the fly. That’s why the baron got a makeover-it needed to be more unique

      @@paytonallen1027 You’re missing the primary point. They look the way they do because in order for the game to actually run you have to be able to see what is around you. Doom 2016 is too dark, Hugo stated that they tried the old texture method for early builds of the game and it didn’t work. A game that runs this fast has to sacrifice aesthetic for performance. This game would suck if demons were too well hidden.

    Doom 2016 is definitely the correct direction for this franchise. While the comic book aesthetic has it's merits and hearkens back to the original games in some ways, you have to remember that the devs of Doom 1993 weren't trying to make the game look silly, they were trying to make it as scary and realistic and cool looking as they could for the time, and I think that Doom 2016 does a great job continuing that design philosophy.

    The actual reason Eternal had more classic designs is because a lot of people were complaining a lot about DOOM 2016 having designs that were "too new", so they reverted back to a more classic style to appeal to the feedback.

    Basically, some textures are lower quality in doom Eternal maybe because there are more enemies on the screen, but what makes a huge different are the lights and the roughness, the light presentation in doom 2016 on this comparison is much better, making the models to pop out much more, same as the roughness, is higher in doom 2016 that makes them pop much more too

    During doom eternal playthrough livestream, the director itself said they INTENDED to make Eternal less gritty and closer to original design. About Baron of Hell, on Eternal when they play tested, the original pink color makes the demon not "pop out" amongst all demons during gameplay. Hence they add fire on it to be more visually apparent.

      @@BurningPXGwhat do mean lack of polish? The models are still incredibly well designed, the levels are fun to travers and interact with. The combat is phenomenal and the guns feel amazing to shoot. The sound design is top notch and the movement is responsive and snappy.
      I’m not sure where you’re getting that the game lacks polish just because it’s not as gory and the animations were made to allow you to actually hit the weak points of enemies more easily.
      (Although I will concede that I was disappointed with the music. Not the arrangement, but the mixing quality. It’s a shame they had a falling out with Mick Gordon before he could finalize the mix of more than like 5 tracks. Not to say the rest are poor quality, they’re just nowhere near as good as they could have been.)

      Itll take about a couple missions to get into eternal because the change in art design. However, the gameplay is the best fps of all time, relentless. The first game i actually struggled with in a while.

      Baron of Hell in 2016 was scary aF. He felt like a real challenge. Not a fan of the new one with the see through Hellboy ripoff arm blades. Dafuck are those supposed to do? He didn't really need those. he was more than capable of ripping doom guy in half with his hands in 2016. Also they really clutter up what was a striking and complete design. They managed to make one of the more goofy looking sprites from the Og and turn it into a menacing enemy

    I'm going to guess that the reason why most of the Eternal models are lower quality is because the game is so incredibly fast-paced. Why bother making a higher detailed enemy if you're just going to kill it in 3 seconds.

      The models aren't lower quality in Eternal. They just have different art styles. Eternal has higher resolution textures and higher polygon counts at every turn. RUclips compression is covering that up. I do prefer the art direction of 2016 more, but Eternal runs better while also having far more detail. I'd recommend watching breakdowns of the technological changes between games. Eternal is a technological upgrade in every way, but an artistic downgrade, in my opinion. To the point of looking worse in spite of being technically superior.

    I think what a lot of the ‘I like 2016 because they look more fleshy’ comments are forgetting is that Eternal had a gore system, particularly noticeable on the Revenant as it ends up looking just as bloody in Eternal as it does in 2016 it’s just that all these models are at full health so the contrast is at its greatest. I think eternal having a cleaner design helps the gore when you rip they flesh off, limbs and chunks of meat piece by piece all the more satisfying when it’s contrasted with a clean design and not the 2016 ones.

      Cacodemon also got nerfed the fuck in-game. They used to be a decent threat in 2016, then in Eternal they introduced the instant stagger mechanic and it made them laughably easy to fight.

    In game the Eternal characters look a lot better. This is missing a lot of shadows which makes it look flat.
    Eternal’s design is just way better imo. Much closer to the original, and enemies stand out more.

    I think the thing people have to take into account with these designs is that even Hugo Martin, creative lead on both of these games has said they are completely different games and trying to be completely different games, including in art direction. Which I definitely see what he means. 2016 reminds me a lot more of the original Quake in terms of how dark it is and how gritty it feels. Eternal’s design choices I think match the original Doom games personality way more than 2016. I don’t just mean that in the way of Eternal’s looking more like the original games, but also just the feeling of them. I don’t think all of 2016’s designs would fit into the original Doom games, but I think just about all of Eternal’s designs could fit right into it.

    idk why some of these are getting compared, considering they are not necessarily related. Summoner and Archvile may have similar functions but aren't the same. And ESPECIALY comparin the tyrant and the Cyberdemon, which are, again, similar. But still very different. It's very notable that they could be related, but one is a boss enemy, a one off enemy while the tyran is a common enemy

      they were designed to look like their classic selves. 2016 went hard with the revival, making the demons look horrifying. eternal made them look like toys you knock over when your doom slayer toy soldier. the designs didnt bother many people as the devs clearly stated they wanted them to look classic

    My thoughts in order:
    Revenant:
    2016 looks more like the experiment it was.
    Eternals desing goes way too hard into the plastic look and looks way too clean.
    Imp:
    So similar i have no preference.
    But. The glowing eyes on the 2016 ine makes it have a more demonic, otherworldly feel, where as the lack of glow in eternal makes it feel more like a beast.
    That said the idle animation of 2016 does a good job at making them look ok edge, fidgity and fast. But most of the idle animations are like this
    Hell knight:
    I prefer the colors if 2016 but the model of eternal. The newer head looks more demonic than the eyeless human skull look kf 2016. But the colors for eternal's are so dark its hard to see it let alone see the cool demonic details.
    Pinky:
    I prefer the more vibrant redw of 2016
    But theyre nearly identical so it doesnt matter much.
    Cacodemon:
    To me, eternal is actually an upgrade in every way here.
    The 2016 one is monsterous in its own right. It honestly looks zombified. But eternals is better in all reguards.
    Particularly with the even larger mouth.
    Mancubus:
    While i understand that eternal was trying to repolcate many OG designs, 2016 is better by a mile.
    It better captures the feel of a demonic monster that feeds on every thing. With dangerous glowing arm cannons.
    Whwre as eternals is... like a disfigured mutant fat man with tusks.
    It flat out looks less threatening in every way.
    Cyber mancubus:
    Here, i actually prefer eternals.
    The full body armor, and its colors actually make it feeo like a properly tech augmented demon. Where as 2016 its a couppe props, a reskin and a vr headset.
    If you however put the head type of 2016's mancubus on this. Itd be perfect.
    Baron of hell:
    The models are basically identical.
    And i like both for different reasons.
    2016 has bright red colors. Fitting for a high rank demon.
    But eternal has the subtlr lava like under glow in their skin, and the blades of flame.
    Combine both of thoae and youd have a perfect baron.
    Lost soul:
    These are genuinely basically the same.
    Engineer:
    2016s looks like a freshly turned one vs eternal which looks like one thats been alive long emougb to grow around the explosive tanks.
    Summoner/archbile:
    No real comparison i can make, but the archvile fits better
    The summoner honestly feels like some kind of demon priest, where the archvile feels more.. itself. I guess.
    Cyber demon/tyrant:
    Just like before these are too different to compare.
    However, the tyrant does feel more like a cyber demon than the 2016 cyber demon.
    2016 just has a ribotic arm and argent core heart. Thats it.
    While the tyrant is nearly 50% machine.
    Spiders:
    A non comparison again. I feel the master mind has a betre color pallette but these feel like they belong side by side otherwise.

    Fun little detail: In Doom 2016 you can see a statue of the Slayer in Eternal's armor. Honestly, I dunno if they changed the statue when Eternal came out, but it implements that that armor is older than the one in 2016.

    Can anybody make a mod to put the old monster designs into Eternal?
    I love the game, but it feels like almost every visual design change was bad.

      it would look pretty terrible now, considering the enture ganes lighting and colour palette was changed, not just the demons. If you put the 2016 models back in they would look incoherent and completely out of place.
      I agree with you that some of those models where alot better, but you can't just mix art directions like that and have it look good. Doom eternals environment was built to work with doom eternals demons, not with 2016s demons.

    I personally prefer the Eternal designs for Demons over their 2016 counterparts. The 2016 art style and design are incredible and I will always love them, but the Eternal designs are just way more expressive and dynamic. Eternal definitely went into a more comedic tone and it leads to some of my favourite Glory Kills and getting to really see the fear in a Demon's face before getting turned into mulch by Rip & Tear man will always live rent free in my head.

    2016's designs and animations make them feel way more alive and unique! Why didn't they kept all that? I like Eternal's cacodemon better trough

      The caco is really the only thing In Eternal that is better. If they just mixed 2016 style with eternals gameplay it would be a perfect game

      The art style change of the demons was also heavily for improving the gameplay. If they’re more visually distinct, it’s easier to identify what is what when zooming at 200000 miles an hour

      The cacodemon in eternal is way worse! Why are the spikes so white and polished now? Did demons develop hygiene between games?? And the eye having an iris made them almost cute. The lifeless eye in 2016 was actually demonic and looked creepy. And don’t get me started on blue blood…

    I feel like 2016band Eternal got the same treatment as shadow of mordor and shadow of war: the second game builds and improves on the gameplay drastically, but the first game completely nails the immersion and atmosphere

      What I mean is that the atmosphere in 2016 is more consistent. I grew up playing doom 1&2, so the atmosphere in 2016 felt more like a modernized version of OG doom, whereas Eternal (which is still a phenomenal game) felt like dropping the Slayer into random places full of demons. The atmosphere was there, it just wasn't consistently doom-ish

    Apart from the different aesthetic choices of people, why does no one consider the fact that some of the designs in eternal were further tweaked to accommodate the new pace of the gameplay system.
    There’s so much to keep track of so naturally visibility is key isn’t it?
