Great video, we can almost treat Doom 3 as a prequel to original Doom, with the marine returning from Hell quite traumatized, only to see another teleportation experiment into Hell, and again in Doom 64 eventually realizing mankind will always invent its own extinction (kinda like AI and nukes) but then is thrown back in time like this video says to The Dark Ages on Argent D'Nur and eventually becoming the Doom Slayer of 2016 and Eternal.
I agree with this, I also suspect the original Dimension that the Doom Guy was from ,the one with the pet Rabbit, was totally taken over by Hell, Ie there Not your People to save!, as the people he is trying to save are in fact Humans of an alternative Dimension Earth, Doom Guy sees it as a Second Chance,I think the Timeline over multiple Earth and dimensions is as follows Doom3, Doom 1994, Doom 2, Doom 64,Doom Dark Ages, Doom 2016, Doom Eternal, there also dlc like resurrection of evil, which are a different Doom Guy ,But I suspect The Doom Guy( one from D3,,D1,D2,D64) is The Slayer from Doom dark ages,2016 and Eternal, that has traveled dimensions and time, evolved and changed.
Unfortunately that can't be the case. Aside from the devs practically saying they're different characters, doomguy actually runs into one of the macguffins from doom 3, and straight up does not recognize it in any capacity.
@@mikfhan Doom 3 is not a prequel. Id stated all the way back in 2004 that Doom 3 is a retelling of Doom 1 and takes place where Doom and Doom 2 never happened. Tim willits exact quote is " the story in Doom 3 takes place as if Doom and Doom 2 never happened. Its important for fans to realize that this isnt Doom 3 after you know Doom 2 hell on earth. I dont know where fans get the idea that Doom 3 is a prequel because its been stated several times by the devs that it has no connections to Doom/ Doom 2.
Surprised you didn't even give an honorable mention/shoutout to *Legacy of Rust.* It's a brand-new *OFFICIAL* Classic Doom expansion that features a new remote region of Hell, known as Vassago's Rest, that the UAC tried and *failed* to colonize for themselves. In their hubris, they called it New Eden. It's home to the so-called "Ones Beneath", which are most likely the new Vassagos. The two new intermission maps look fantastic and are also probably worth a look. Also, while we're on that topic... How about some honorable mentions/shoutouts to *SIGIL 1 & 2?*
@@protostar5946 Although i like LoR i think it and Sigil are non canon expansions just like Cold Stream and The Last Stand for Left 4 Dead. They are there because the creators wanted to make something new. But yeah a mention would be nice since Doom 3 is also not canon but got one.
With Quake, Doom being covered, what about a few other classics that have had reboots or just stayed around, such as Unreal, Heretic, Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem and Turok
@@Panchyishere That shouldn't be a question. The Machine Games Wolfenstein games shares no narrative connection to the previous Wolfenstein Games and is set in their own canon. Unlike the recent Doom games which are soft-reboots.
Here's what happened... The maykrs (Seraphs) figured out the secret to immortality (Argent energy) and realized that in order for that to be created a Hell MUST exist. This is why they betrayed Davoth and the humans. They wanted immortality for themselves and this is why they continued to create mortal realms after sealing away Jakked and why those mortal realms were constantly invaded by hell for collection of souls.
For your next big project I suggest something I’ve never seen on RUclips. A complete and understandable guide to the entire timeline(s) of the Command & Conquer/RedAlert/Generals series.
I really liked in the newer doom games how they tied the story from the originals into it, even if it was just kind of a wave of the hand it was still neat to know that we're still playing the same guy all this time lol
32:40 I’m glad I’m not the only one fascinated by the inspiration of the original Doom Hell names. Dis, Pandaemonium, Mt. Erebus, Limbo, all have a literary or Biblical root that I’d like to see explored
Since you love covering doom lore so much, have you considered maybe covering ultrakill too? Maybe as a mini-series of sorts? Could be interesting to see you cover it
The 2016 remake's Hell is certainly more fleshed out, but I liked Doom 3's version _because_ so much was left unexplained. Even the characters in universe genuinely don't understand it, and their reports get weirder and more unsettling as the game goes on. A lot of people write off Doom 3 as more survival horror than a proper shooter, but I think the unexplained nature of that game's Hell supports the game in two ways. First, it gives just enough info about Hell and the ancient Martians to encourage you to speculate about them, rather than just telling you it was all this ancient guy's plan gone wrong. And second, even as unsettlingly Lovecraftian as it may be, the fact that you can settle the score with determination and a shotgun is still very much a Doom flavor.
Wow, I was really waiting to hear another story from Doom franchise with your voice and your research. you are wonderful Please also make a video about what happens to the world of Doom and Doom Guy himself after the death of the Dark Lord.
That'd be really interesting to cover but sadly we do not have any information of what happened after the death of Davoth. Hopefully Dark Ages will give us something
Great video! Only thing I'll say is that the Hell between the original Doom series to the modern series is the same. The only differences are the species of demons present in the games and the settings, but besides that, Hell/Jekkad is a dimension connected to all others, like you said, so its connected to both the original Doom dimension and the modern Doom dimension.
I think Dr. Betruger knew about the slayer, and was worried that the Doom Marine would find the Slayer and free him. Once again having the demons flee in horror.
@MattD402 Yes he does. It's a different universe but the same hell. Which means Betruger most likely knew about the Slayer. If you read the texts in Doom and Doom Eternal it reveals that it's always been the same hell.
@@RealEnerjak Funny that Betruger not once mentioned the Doom Slayer in the entirety of Doom 3. That's because the Doom Slayer doesn't exist in Doom 3. Doom Slayer don't exist in Doom 3 because Doom Slayer wasn't even an idea back then.

The father is not the brightest. You trap an immortal realm in a bubble and then start feeding it forever to make it stronger. They already popped the last bubble, and yet he can't fathom that they'll eventually pop this one too. All he had to do was deprive Hell of new souls. Starve it while he had the upper hand. I theorize that he couldn't stop souls from being sent their upon death, but stopping them from being harvested there should have been number one priority.
