Bill Maher and Steven Van Zandt on their mutual efforts to stay in shape, Steven’s authentic style, the evolution from tour buses to planes, the changes in Las Vegas from the mob era to corporate, the commercialization of everything, how Steven is a "law and order liberal," police reform, homelessness, and the balance between liberal and woke ideologies, how this conversation is NOT about Bruce Springsteen, accurately depicting stand-up and music in movies, Steven’s role in "The Sopranos," climate change, and Elon and the feasibility of Mars as a habitat.

Steve is an absolute gentleman and true legend. First time I was genuinely star-struck. He was rehearsing at a studio I worked at in London. He ended up buying the rental guitar he was using after liking it so much. Respect.
"I've just about had it with this first amendment stuff." Yeah, what a great guy. I'm sure he's perfectly pleasant when he's not talking politics, but like his buddy Bruce he's got serious TDS. See his 2023 tweets. At times van Zandt is a completely naive, irrational douchebag.
I read a lot of comments about bill interrupting the guests, and sometimes I notice in more interviews than others, but this time, I have to comment because it might be the most glaring example...Stevie was about to start talking about a book he was writing, and I thought, cool! Who woulda thunk it! Tell me more Stevie! And bill then proceeds to interrupt, pick up HIS book, plugs it, talks about how funny he thinks the cover is, waxes on about his process etc. And then they literally NEVER get back to talking about what Stevie is writing...I'm still curious, no way he doesn't have some better stories than bill...take a breath Billy, let the man speak! What did you have him there for?
This isn’t an interview. This is supposed to just be Bill and a friend yapping. The cameras are hidden. They are meant to forget it’s even being taped.
His guests don’t have an issue so why do you?
All throughout the podcast... "You were on 60 minutes? I was on in 1992, too. Let me tell you about it."
This hive mind whining like children about him interrupting is a phenomenon of people being lemmings. Stop acting like children. Either stop watching or be quiet. Constant complaining is the domain of immature people.
@Akkbar21 So, everyone at the same time read someone's comment and wants to copy it? Or does everyone notice the obvious? I watch because of the guests. Bill is smug and arrogant, yet I still like to hear what he says sometimes.
@@laureencriss8220 glad you’re enjoying the content. To answer your question, I think some people want to post something negative, since Maher attracts political partisanship and is simply opinionated. So they see this narrative that he talks over people and it grows, but people nowadays are more copying it to ensure they’re part of the group and much less actually being influenced and changing their opinion by seeing other comments.
Steve is soft-spoken and seems like a nice guy.
He would make a good consigliere
He's not he's a liberal pos
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
If He had his way he would
kindly remove your right to free speech. That's the first step to totalitarianism. The founding fathers made it the first amendment knowing how important it is.
Agreed.
And thanks for not taking the opportunity to shit on Maher!
So, around the 23 min mark, Van Zandt mentions that he has been writing a book for about 20 years and "all about me " Bill says "really" as if he is genuinely interested. Then , one second later , it is all about his book. Wow, hard to take a host who does not listen to the guest.
as he does with the 60 minutes interview. aaall about himself
Yup! I think he considers himself a great listener but he only "listens" to find opportunities for him to insert his opinions.
it was a fraction of a second no longer....
If it is not apparent to everyone by now...Bill is a man-child...and he is accustomed to stomping his feet...interesting that he detests Trump...but is turning into a narcissistic clone.
Steven is a gem. I am so glad I got to see him in this setting. What a lovely conversation and easy listen.
Say what you want about Bill, but dude gets the best guests.
True, he still overbears the shit out of everyone lol
@@speak-easyconversations1393 Yes...I'm getting tired of his routine...Bill needs an "attitude adjustment"...I think Karma will pay him a visit...People who embrace hubris over humility often pay a price.
@@speak-easyconversations1393 then why are you here?
@@lt.columbo5919 i don't get why people like you even tune in? just go listen to someone else.
@@bleepblorpp We all come here for the guests. Bill will never change--he certainly doesn't read the comments or ask an assistant to distill it down for him.
Bill, once you cut off someone to share something about yourself, you have to address an apology and ask the guest what they were going to say.
Why share your incredible podcasting wisdom instead of doing one yourself that totally blows Bill Maher out of the water?
Jesus Bill. You have freaking Lil Stevie on and he's trying to tell cool stories and you constantly interrupt him! Be QUIET!!!
Well, that's the problem with weed.
Great show and great guest Bill👍back towards the beginning when the conversation centered around crime of how Republican policies ushered in the privatization of crime I thought you were about to chime in with a new red hat slogan "Make Crime Great Again" Lol...actually trump should be wearing that hat to his court appearances.
It's all about Bill and his life....the guest is just the hook, the POV (point of departure).
Hush up billy.
I don’t think Maher reads the comments!😂😂😂😂
Great musician, great actor, great person. Respect you SVZ
Bill I have viewed every episode of Club Random and Steve Van Zandt your BEST guest ever!!! It is evident you respect him and there is a nice flow. GREAT INTERVIEW!!!!!!!!!
OH god, Steven Van Zandt is the coolest dude. He is so gracious and has a great, great sense of humor. Love the guy.
I never knew, so others can complain about Bill lol but man This interview shows what a class act Steven is! Not many interviews show the personality of all these celebrity guests so kudos to Maher!
“For the Longest Time” must have been the Billy Joel song they were trying to remember in the beginning
I was trying to think of the name of that song, for the longest time😊

If you have never watched Lilyhammer you are missing out. It was only like one or two seasons but classic. “Who TF are you? Who TF are you? I’m Security now who TF are you? What’s the line on the Nicks? Yo Joie, what’s the line on the nicks? 8 1/2…../8 1/2 ok then alright then
“Our true enemy has not yet revealed himself”
I watched just for the chance he does Silvio's The Godfather quotes.
Cheer me up babe
28:20 Bill: congratulations on your 60 Minutes interview, but let me tell you about MY 60 Minutes interview.
Typical Bill, he can't help but think about himself 😅
Steven: "I've been working on a book for 20 years."
Bill: "Hey, here, see my book" and then promotes his own book and never goes back to any interest in Steve's book at all.....
but Steven is a most gracious guest.
@@jjroseknows777Unfortunately Bill has lots of gracious guests. 🙁
Bill you book amazing guests that we really want to hear. Remember we already know you in depth but we don't necessarily know that guest ''in depth'' and that is why we are tuning in. You are great or we wouldn't be here but we know you already.
This show is about shooting the shit, this show does that perfectly…
As if we are just the fly on the wall! Love this show so much!!!
Stevie is a nice guy. Sat there and listened to Bill lecture him on politics and economics and music.
What a genuine good guy. Doesn't take long to see that .
Another episode of guests listening to Bill talk , and talk, and talk.
Couldn't make it past about 20 minutes, again. Bill just won't shut up. I don't know why he has guests at all.
Yeah shut up ruined everything
I'm sure it is aided by the booze and maybe gummies. (Does Bill do drugs?)
I just fast forward...... annoying for sure.
why do you keep coming back if you hate it so much?
Bill is on a killer role with his recent guests!
*roll
No kidding!
And a killer roll.
my sentiment exactly, Ya know some TV/movie fans like the east coast people.
I wish it was the same for Real Time. Lately it’s been lacking especially last Fridays guests.
Steve is an exceptional talent. He’s lived the life. Touring with one of best bands in world and acting in one of the best productions ever. He’s the best.
Speak is silver, listen is gold.
It's so weird to invite interesting guests only to be able to speak about yourself to them and interrupt them as soon as they start to speak.
Although, it's almost as weird to sit through interviews just to shit on the interviewer later!
I like Maher and his Club Random and unfortunately I couldn't watch this one through to the end. Turned it off after 20 minutes. One must also be able to give constructive critique and have an opinion without being told they shit on other people. I wish you a fantastic day and thanks for your input. Cheers
Your right and apologies for my language but that's the currency that online exchanges often traffic in! All good! 😊
This is the first Van Zandt interview I could not listen to in full because Bill cannot STFU. Let them talk, Billy boy.
Omg. If you hate Maher so much, STOP WATCHING HIS SHOWS. Stop constantly complaining like a child. Do something, like an adult. Have people forgotten than whining is the behavior of children? You need to stfu
Steven says "YOU KNOW" WAY TOO MUCH! It is hard to listen to them talk!--
Maher , besides Letterman ... is absolutely the WORST interveiwer in history !! U r right , he just never shuts the F up !!!!! What s the point of having a quess when all you talk about is you & your life !! 10 : 43 in ..... I ve had enough of Maher ..... i,m done !!!!!!!
Bill can't seem to take his hand off his drink for one minute or let someone else speak for one minute.
Bill is just so into hearing his own voice, his opinions are more important. I used to really like Bill on real-time. After seeing the real Bill on this podcast. I do not feel he represents the True democrat issues. Can't believe he interrupted to plugg his own book when Stevie was trying to discuss what his book he is writing about. I think Bill is selfish and out of touch.
Steven is great, really enjoyed listening to him. Just comes off as a regular guy with no ego at all. So talented to, good role model I think .
I can listen to Steve talk forever. He's quite a character.
I know what you mean but you'll have a hard time here. Bill will talk most of the time.

Really enjoyed Mr. Van Zandt's recollections as well as his perspectives on life.

The guest is right. I often see people in their twenties who are embracing the classics from the 1970’s that haven’t been duplicated, such as Led Zeppelin. Certain songs will carry on for generations.
Bill is a living legend. Talk shiz all ya want, the man paid his dues, and came up from humble beginnings. He earned his spot 10x over.
His Dad had money and owned a beach house in Long Island....he was born lucky.
Do you think these are good reasons for him to be so self-involved and not listen to what others have to say ?

Love Steve's work and that he looks like his other job is tarot card readings at the State fair 🙂

Just when I thought I was done with Bill Maher, he pulls me back in.
Steven did a great job interviewing Bill
Couldn’t believe Bill had never heard of the song You Can’t Sit Down by the Dovells. It was the most popular version…It was a very catchy, cool song ❤
I know great song
Bill seems to know/care very little about music that predated his adolescent and young adult years. I'm at least 10 years younger than him but have heard You Can't Sit Down dozens of times since I was a kid. Steve plays it often on the Underground Garage, which I get the impression Bill has rarely listened to. I think he should do more homework if he's going to be even halfway authoritative when "interviewing" or just rapping with legendary guests on his shows.
A little threat of violence. Three fans in the room had me rolling.
Maher at his best lol
I'm with Bill on this one. 😊
Steven is right about the 3,000 rooms. It can't all be done, properly.
Steve, Ive been writing a book for the last 20 years..
Bill interjects, I have a book, it comes out in may, here, I signed it for you, an advanced copy.
It's always about bill maher
Fans of The Sopranos love Steven in Lilyhammer on Netflix. Epic!

Wild to hear him talk about Shea Stadium. My mom saw the Beatles at that show, and she said she had no idea what songs they played because the screaming was so loud. She had to read about it in the paper days later.
Yep, and because of that sh!t, and all those teenybopper girls losing their sh!t, and not realizing it's about

Beautiful Stevie. He gifted the Hon. jamie Raskin with doorags while he was going through chemotherapy. Beautiful. ❤
Raskin is scum.
Title should be "Steven Van Zandt Listens to Bill Maher's life story"
Stevie is wrong about people "not wanting to work". People do want to work. They just don't want to work for slave wages. That is why businesses have trouble finding people to take jobs that don't pay enough for them to actually pay their bills.
Some of these...some of those...
Bill always finds a way to plug himself. i’m sure in more ways than one.
😂
Bill, let him talk lol.
How much does Bill pay these people to “ hang out “ with him?
If Bill actually listened to the Underground Garage he would've already heard Wilson Pickett's version of Sugar, Sugar.
When you get right down to it, Bill doesn't know much about pop/rock music, and less about other genres. He likes to listen, but has clearly done little actual exploration.
The word narcissist gets overused, but I’ve come to believe if anyone fits the category, it’s Maher. My guess is he’s never married cuz nobody could ever meet his impossibly high self-isolating standards.
I didn’t know much about Steven before watching this. But after seeing this interview, I adore him! Bill is a great host. It was good to learn more about Steven. And I loved his whole vibe and laughter.
The Outlaws? I thought they were the Highwaymen
It's about a musical movement/attitude/style, not a specific band. Outlaw Country goes way beyond the four or five members of the Highwaymen.
Let him talk!
He is! 😆😄😅

To have such a cool guest and then talk over him most of the time or just talk about yourself sort of sucks. I went to Little Steven's garage rock festival in 04 because my brother was on the lineup! So AMAZING!
How do you have Mr. Steven Van Zandt as a guest and not ask him about the Sopranos??
Time to rewatch The Sopranos! 😁
After being humiliated by Bill Burr for 90 minutes last week, Maher is happy to once again have a guest who will nod along and agree with everything he says.

Why can't ppl of a certain age distinguish between " no one wants to work anymore " and " no one wants to work awful jobs ..anymore ".
Same thing as always - no one ever wanted to work at an awful job. But they used to accept some responsibility and just move on without whining.
Some ppl of a certain age are just spoiled, lazy and fragile. And they quit.
There have always been "awful" jobs and there always will be. Previous generations knew that in order to provide for themselves and their families, they sometimes had to step up and do them.
What starting jobs do you think we had at 15 in 1981?
I never "wanted to work". I did it, but I never "wanted" to. That whole blue collar hero thing & proud to do a job even when you're getting dick for it is strictly an American neurotic disorder. You don't hear that line in other countries, & it shows. People here who just need something (anything) to call themselves "mattering" for will latch onto that one in a heartbeat. I was never pleased to be paid just a little for my time, effort, & skills that were making some other @$$w!pe richer. As soon as I could get out & retire, I did; & the bosses could kiss my @$$.
Mrs. Maisel should be watched if only for Tony Shaloub's performance.
I drop in on Club Random now and then. I try to like it because I have been a Bill Maher fan for years. All I have to say Bill is less about you and more about your guest. You talk likely 90% of the time and that just doesn’t seem right.

Waylon Jennings regrets nothing because he's been dead for twenty two years. Nothing bugs me more than when people talk about a dead person as if they were still alive. If you don't know enough about someone to know that they're dead, don't talk about them.😵
