23:45 I try and watch every video you put out. They are very informational and I enjoy watching them. I personally will never be a streamer or ytuber or anything of the sorts but seeing this "behind the scenes" stuff helps me understand what my favorite streamer persons have to deal with to make a living
So if i get this straight. Twitch's plan by switching from a flat rate to a percentage rate, is it allows them to sell more ads. Which means as a user, they are going to show more ads.
Ex-twitch staff and decently successful streamer and RUclipsr reporting in. Just got to the “leave a comment” callout and this is all very on point so far. Great video as always Devin, ty for breaking this down🙏
Thank you for explaining Twitch's Ad Revenue plan! As a new content creator, it's hard to understand what to do. Thank you for creating helpful and informative videos c: 23:45
I use ads as a health check reminder to take a stretch break every hour. My chat are usually very understanding and know they can come back after the ad if they don't wanna watch
So pretty much what I am taking away from this is. Don't rely on AD revenue to make your money. Build your brand. Make deals outside of twitch to make money. SOUNDS GOOD!
So basically Twitch is screwing the streamers yet again.. P.S. I never got an incentive from Twitch for this ad revenew change. It just suggested that I run more ads to get 55% more ad revenue without giving me a scale of what I might make.
Always enjoy your long deep dive videos Devin & always watch to the end. Twitch Turbo is well worth it IMO as the long ad breaks are especially intrusive during live content. And pre-rolls really dissuade you from checking out new streams.
Succinct as always Devin! I really do enjoy your content, it's fascinating the entire industry as a whole. That being said, I moved back to pre-roll ads because at one point, Twitch recommended and then decided it knew better and moved it to the recommended with no input from me, the creator, at all, to running 1:30 of ad time every 13 minutes. My viewership was inr eal time going 10-15 -> 4 -> 10-15 -> 4, and every time the ad break was done and I was at 4, it would SLOWLY climb back up to that 10-15. Nah, I'll just run the pre-rolls, have 'em watch once, and call it good.
Thanks a lot for this video! Helped me greatly on writing a report about Twitch for an assignment, when there aren't many scholarly articles on recent events regarding Twitch. Hearing word from someone who works closely in this space was pivotal to me forming necessary arguments needed for my report. Thanks again!
Hey, Devon! Still here at the special 23:00 deep dive shout out ;) Thanks for all your amazing work on YT and for all the perks I get as a Patron of yours. As a restreamer, I am watching this wondering: will the ad-splits ever matter to me on Twitch? Are they ever going to allow non-exclusivity? Probably not, and now I'm watching this video more out of curiosity on whether or not Twitch will be around in 5 years to see the "Grand Plan" realized, haha :D
Another major asterisk to the 55% revenue split is this caveat… even without taking an incentive you MUST pre-schedule at least 3 mins of ads an hour to get the new 55%. From Twitch: “Starting in August, just set Ads Manager to three minutes (or more) per hour. That’s it, that’s the end of the list. Do that? BAM. You’re qualified and you get a 55% ad revenue split on your payouts.”
I enjoyed that 900 y/o vampires from Transylvania joke a little too much 🤣 Also I'd be interested in a video on how much info Tiktok gathers from you and how. Their algorithms are kind of a mystery to me. Great video as always, I watch these while I work and end up getting to the end of them before I know it
The only ads I run on my channel are preroll ads because they’re necessary if scheduled ads are turned off. I’d rather someone sit through one ad and have an ad free experience for the duration of my stream than make a few extra bucks. Thanks for putting this video together! As a full time streamer and content creator I really appreciate knowing the metrics of my profession.
it said on the agreements page that it is location independent when it comes to payout... that would include serving i believe in the adds industry... very unique to that industry... they got a good provider it seems...
awesome video devin, great to see you back! I would love to see a breakdown about tiktok live and its benefits and such. they just released a live studio for creators and are expanding insanely fast into the live market.
It’s soooo true! I use to watch Twitch all day at work, with ads ALL THE TIME I got so sick of it! I don’t remember the last time I watched twitch. RUclips runs 8 hours plus a day. Deep in at 23 mins!
20% of ads come from bing because generally most big corporatesuse edge as their default browser and edge uses bing by default. Most desk jockeys have no idea how to change the default search
I know this is a psychological thing, but when I get two 15 second preroll ads on Twitch as opposed to one 30 second ad, I feel worse and am more likely to go somewhere else. I stayed a lot more when they only did one 30 second ad.
[1] They don't do ads as well as youtube because they purchase the ads directly instead of through adsense and it's sitewide instead of based on an algorithm. [2] They basically completely destroy the viewer experience for streams. [3] The revenue is basically trash for affiliates, but nobody should be an affiliate because there are so many better things someone can be doing climbing up to that 1000-5000 viewer rrange, and I'd argue nobody should ever sign a contract for livestreaming that has exclusivity. Literally none of the other platforms do that unelss you sign directly with the company, which would be a multi-million dollar deal so that would make sense to take it. It's weird to me that a standard twitch partner has to basically put their entire streaming career at the mercy of a single company where if for some reason you get banned and not even told why, you're unable to stream and therefore unable to collect revenue from sponsorships, ads, subs, and donations, etc.
I dove into streaming feet first, no clue about what I was getting into, and its been a really interesting journey. I haven't exactly "cracked the code of success" haha, but your vids are packed full of useful info and have been really helpful. For better or worse, I just want the straight dope on what I'm really dealing with so I can like, ya know, live in reality and stuff. This is industry is hazy at best. Your insights are much appreciated, thanks!
18:46 And of course, you can't review the VOD of the stream until the stream is over - potentially hours later... And if you do, you'll get slammed with another set of un-skippable ads.
@@goldenirie Oh really? It's been quute a few years since I've watched anything on Twitch in general, so I guess it must have change since I last tried it.
@@SamuraiPipotchi no prob dude! Some people like me listen to copyright music still so we disable vods in the first place, but anyone with vods enabled you can go to their videos and watch back a vod even if the stream is still live.
7:55 I thought most people were just taking a net value and multiplying the gains to determine their true value. This makes an assumption that the fees/ad "charges" are % and not a flat fee. 11:25 Probably will be mentioned, but it was inferred you are giving up the ability to run your own ad timings and switch to an automated system. 21:00 that graph seems dodgy, unless they have a way to grab everyone's revenue information (which I figured would be private) even those who never receive a minimum twitch payout. Also "Excludes users who didn't make any revenue" but the graph does start at $1 Personal opinion on ads, I love ads... I hate the ads in which twitch personalities make an appearance, they are so bland, so uninspiring, and most are literally them in their studio with zero effort and are 100% zero interest in actually checking the product out. Other than that, decent video.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong. 23 minutes in and I'm suspicious that Twitch is misrepresenting their server costs, pocketing Ad revenues, and giving smaller creators the shaft to increase their profit margins. I know they pay a fraction for hosting their servers, since Amazon owns the servers they use. With these worse contracts, it seems like streamers, especially smaller ones, are getting exploited.
Watching less and less twitch, 1 Elderscrolls lorecast and sometimes Josh Hayes cause hea a gem. Turbo is great if u use it regularly. Honestly wondering if/when they'll pull it.
The fill rate part is a bit confusing to me (when Devin says the streamer would supposedly get paid less per ad but gets more money overall), i don't get how a streamer would get more money unless they run more ads on their channel, could anyone explain this to me?
No you got it. They make less per ad but more ads are running netting them more money. But it will eventually lead to less watchtime, more adblocks and less revenue.
@@BrockleeSwag but as a streamer, can't you just run more ads now if you want to? Like, people could just run more ads per hour now, so it'd just be less money for doing the same thing
Regarding the grand plan, it sounds like Amazon want to run personalised ads across Twitch, Prime Video and Music like their competitors. It would be interesting to know the percentage of viewers on Twitch who are Prime members to see if this is feasible, as the only way I can see Amazon collecting enough data on demographics is through Prime accounts and their purchase / viewing history.

While continuing to pretend that Twitch Turbo doesn't exist and refuse to market it, unlike RUclips with Premium, yes.

Just fyi, I’d be between small & medium with 650 avg viewers. I got offered $850 for 82 hours this month, so that’s more than your estimate
Made it! As a new streamer, I have been appreciating your analysis on the space! Been working my way through most of your backlog
as a smaller partnered streamer thats sort of growing(?) i really appreciate this video breaking everything down.

Can we take a moment to appreciate how Devin fr just made a 40 mins long video in one sitting with no cuts?
Always here at the callout Devin. Love it.

It's been reported recently that Twitch posted a notification that they will no longer be doing premium contracts anymore. 🤷♂ so there is that.

Got to 23:00 -- great content as always, Devin!

Shoutout to the Windows 11 Notepad!!! Did you know you can spin the settings wheel on it?
We here one year later
I average 50-100 viewers and 1st month offer was $300+, 2nd $75, 3rd $450+
