The Dream Is Over
I was a student at UT at this time. I was also working for the organization that brought concerts to the UT campus. I was head of security for this show. Van Halen's road manager told me that he needed four security members to guard Van Halen at the hotel they were staying at that night. So I got three of my team and after the show we met them at the Hyatt in Knoxville. As we were walking them into the hotel Eddie grabs my arm and says "this guy's with me". My other teammates went with Sammy, Al and Mike to their hotel rooms. I took Eddie to his room and let him in and stood outside his door. After about 5 minutes Eddie open the door and said "aren't you coming in?" I said "SURE!" I sat in Eddie's hotel room for four hours listening to him play guitar. He had headphones on and had a TASCAM Portastudio slung around his shoulder and was playing a white Ovation acoustic. Around 2am the road manager knocked on the door and told me I could go home. Eddie thanked me, gave me a hug, a guitar pick and a little note he had written for me. It was one of the coolest nights of my entire life. RIP Eddie
That's an awesome story! Eddie was my guitar hero and seemed like a great guy. Your story verifies that. He just never bought into the whole rock star vibe, he just wanted to make music.
I was a kid at this time, but I'm shocked that they were able to play here, though this is before this city sold its soul to corporate machines. UT accepted so many students that they had to demolish everything to build overpriced apartments.
That's Awesome.
Goosebumps. Great times. Wish it could last forever....
Great bootleg dude. Great audio and Ed with the parachute outfit, pretty rare for that tour.
I was there for that gig.....I hated to see it end.
My favorite song off the Carnal Knowledge LP was The Dream is Over..
Awesome night!!
RIP Edward Van Halen
A Year To The Day Since I Left My First Comment on This Video I Now Leave My Second One,..Me and My Wife Karen Hensley Were at This Concert. I Was 28 Years Old and Now I'll Be 51 On The 10th of October,..Time Flies, So Live Everyday To The Fullest!
The people who smuggled in camcorders to shows during our time growing up, are the real heroes.
Right on to you and the wife!
And long live VH and the Sam years! 🤘🏼
51 is still young, ask an 80 year old!
I Was There That Night At Thompson-Bowling Arena In Knoxville, Tennessee As Well Jeff Hensley. I Was Just 17 Years Old That Frosty, Cold Night In Knoxville In 1991. WOW Dude! Where The Hell Did The Time Go My Friend? 30 Years Just Flew By. I'm 47 Now! I Drove From Erwin, Tennessee About 100 Miles From Knoxville That Night To See The Late Great Edward Van Halen In Action, And I Had The Amazing Opportunity To Meet The G.O.A.T. Of The Electric Guitar Face To Face And it Was An Experience That I Will Cherish Until The Day That I Stop Breathing! Damnit Man, I Still Can't Believe He's Gone. Eddie Single Handedly Changed The Face Of The Electric Guitar. He Was The Lord Of The Strings! He Was The BEST. Period.
My god. That's one well-oiled rock n' fuckin' roll machine.
My wife and I were at "This show"...and it Rocked. Great memories indeed. Thanks for sharing this.
What was the venue in Knoxville
Thompson- Boling Arena
I was only 6 at this time. I do remember this venue actually having real bands here. It's mainly whatever latest, faceless country pop singer that has a hit now lol. I saw Tom Petty here as kid. It was a year or 2 later I think. I've lived here too long.
Man, thanka for posting this! Went to 2 shows that tour, still the best time I ever had at a live show! Concerts today suck compared to this.
Keep rocking in heaven Eddie!!
I was there, and I was a senior in high school, Grunge had already taken over, but I didn’t give a crap. Van Halen was MY band, and everyone at school knew it 😂. One of the most amazing nights in my life.
wonderful - VAN HALEN
People really took big arenas rock shows to heart back in those days. Why in hell any generation would want to move away from that is beyond me.
Totally agree! Glad I was at an age that could experience it , and I sure as F did, haha!! So many great memories!! It was a great time to be alive!!!!
Holy crap THANK YOU so much for posting this. I was actually at this show and have this same bootleg video!! I was gonna transfer it and post it but you already did!!
I was there! Thanks so much posting! Wow,
I sure miss these guys
I saw that tour, twice! Memphis and Little Rock. Doesn't get any better than that.
this concert was just 14 days later after I saw them in Oklahoma City 2/2/92.....great show....Baby Animals opened for them
You saw them when my wife was one day old 🤣
I remember getting into Baby Animals after this show. My one and only time seeing them. So epic! I still can't believe he's gone!
Wow! Thanks for posting this. I was so shocked to find this. I was actually at this show in the 2nd row floor in front of Michael Anthony!
I was there at that concert it was a great fucking show love van Halen go Knoxville TN and to all my homies
Too bad this city sucks nowadays. I've lived here most of my life.
@ 2:28 Sammy comes running closer and the girl shrieks like eye cutting glass!
LOL
And Micheal playing Sunday Afternoon in the Park during his bass solo wow cool!
I would have loved to seen them live!!!
I saw them on this tour in Atlanta. It might have even been the last show of the tour. Vince Neil opened for them, and he had Steve Stevens on guitar which was pretty cool to see.
Eddie with the 1980 jump suit!
Pete Townshend use to wear those, he called them "boiler suits" they look like gas station attendant uniforms to me..i guess its all the same
Like a super hero!
That was orange though.

Thanks for posting this. These guys were on fire.
Whoah!! I was at this show! It was my first concert! I was just shy of my 12th birthday. Thanks for uploading this. Though today I'm way more of a Roth era fan, this brings back memories.
Wow! Thanks, I was there on the 11th row.
Pure gold 😢❤
Eddie is wearing the exact same green flight suit he wore at the Birmingham AL. Show, l was at that one then the next night we went to Huntsville AL. Show....out of all 11 show's 5 with the DLR days and 6 with Sammy, nobody could hold a candle to VH
This is bad ass... awesome.
Excellent camera work dude! Thanks for posting!
Very shaky and constant zooming is good?
Sick "Whole Lotta Love" tease by Sammy before "One Way To Rock"
If I Remember Correctly, I Think It Was The Baby Animals That Opened For Van Hagar That Night. Someone Correct Me If I'm Wrong. I Missed The Opening Act That Night.
Great Quality!!
There was also an interview with Ed saying that’s why they tuned half step down for Dave, because he couldn’t sing. They do it still for Sammy, but could probably count the songs on one hand
check out eddie w the jumpsuit.. !
What I would give to have the 1988 Knoxville, Tn show video. We camped out for 2 nights, got the whole front row center, wore tee shirts that spelled V-A-N-H-A-L-E-N, and got pulled on stage. Not one picture nor video at all, that I am aware.
It’s amazing how good they sound with Sammy. It’s sounds like the recording. Sorry Dave.
Yeah, I’m a HUGE Sam fan, and my wonderful husband thought he could recruit me. 😳 Yeah right. (My first concert was Monsters of Rock at LA Coliseum at 16. Gimme a break. Sammy will always be the king in my eyes)
Anyway, it was about 10 years ago, and in our section, we were a urrounded by Roth fans. Diehard. I literally got into it with a few. So VH hits the stage and Wolfie, Eddie n Alex were great.... they were tight, TIGHT! Wolfie held his own. ❤️.
(But I adore Mikey).
So, where do I start with DLR. Oof. He reminded me of a lounge singer. Horrible doesn’t begin to describe it. With the babbling about god knows what in between songs, his attempt at karate moves in the air, he interacted with no one. I always noticed that with Dave. That Van Halen was DLR and everyone else was just his backup band. We were
There for him. I’ve even went back to watch old videos of them, and it’s the same. So odd.
Then, I Googled, Best of Both Worlds. In my opinion,
that video is the 80’s. It’s how you felt at any show, of any band you love and finally get to see Live. Yes, they’re aware they are being taped, but there is no comparison. DLR was all about him. (I did like the DLR era though, and love a few songs. And he was a great single showman!)
Nevertheless, this particular show, about in the middle, a screen pops up. And it’s DLR in a field with his dogs. WTF? Am I at a VH show, or watching behind the scenes of Little House on the Prairie?
I sat down. (I’ve never sat at a show in my life.) And I look around me. About 75% of everyone around us were sitting too. It was upsetting.
Looking back now at that show, I truly think that Ed and Al just wanted to perform with their nephew, son, while they had the chance and on their terms. They knew things would probably get worse than better and had a small window to do it. (I think that was the only time I respected DLR. last January he did say VH was over touring but didn’t say why and that’s Ed’s story, not his.)
And that’s pretty cool in my book.
We miss you Ed.
@@therealwilfreddierkes9980 thats awesome I was was at Monsters at the Coliseum. Do u remember when everyone broke down the fence and stormed the stage? My friend and I went from the top of the arena to about 25 rows back right in time for the Scorpions. Great memories!
@@therealwilfreddierkes9980 Don’t ridicule the clown, just appreciate his “makeup”. DLR made VH - Van Halen. He was a craftsman in the studio, a party host on stage. Love and embrace both EVH bands. They each brought so much to our rock n roll
@@Taylor-hu2no no they had to do take after take and splice together vocals to get something useful out of Dave. They didn’t want Dave in the band in the beginning because he couldn’t sing. Not Even Ted Templeton. But after saying all that. I still love all the Dave era stuff, it’s just that Sammy was a real singer. And they sounded better than ever with him.
Pardon my French but how the Fvck did you get the sound so good. I can download it and run it through shaky cam fix when I get time. Thanks for posting. Bad azz show and only on 4th song.
Eddie has on the same flight suit he wore in Birmingham, Alabama when we saw them on Valentine's day the same the awesome F.U.C.K. concert....It was Killer, me and 2of my best friends went
My dad went there
Smallest live drum kit I've ever seen AVH use. But I think he did expand to 2 kick drums later on this tour?
You wouldn't happen to have or know of the whereabouts of the Nashville 91 show, would you?
There was another video of this show on here but it got blocked.
That Tour Was 1992. I Screwed Up Below And Said 91. A Person Tends To Forget A Few Things After About 30 Years Or So. Lol
Killer
I wish someone had the 1989 show from Knoxville

Thompson Boling Arena. Knoxville, TN!
Ahh yes, when that venue booked rock, and not just pop country crap. This city is such a shadow of its former self. It's still cool if you're an alcoholic with bad taste lol.
Eddie the ER nurse on guitar.
yep! surgically working on that geeetar.
45:20-46:33 so it was a pre recorded backing track for the keyboard stuff or was alan fitzgerald actually playing keyboards on this tour? Ive always assumed from this mishap that they had a track that did they keyboard stuff
All of the keyboards were sequenced. That’s why Al wears the headphones during those songs. This allows the band to stay in time with the click track.
This video isn't bad
what song do they play at 1:23:00 thanks!
make it last - from the first montrose record!
@@epfrisco8910 thanks! i love sammy and vh but i don't know montrose very well
audio is horrible in all these videos! what a shame, i cant even hardly watch em!!
Then don’t pansy.
Given that this is 90's quality footage, I've heard worse live audio of older concerts on RUclips.
