Fallout 4 Vault-Tec Workshop - Compact Residential Wing

- Short video today - I decided that my vault needed to be much more compact, as it was obvious I was going to run out of space much quicker than expected. With that in mind - here is my design for a compact residential wing, complete with a communal area and bathrooms.

"It's all about the build order." & "It's quite fun to get lost."
Two more worthy entries into the "The Wit and Wisdom of Davey". :)
just a tip. I have found that you can actually make 1X1 rooms just lay down a domestic hallway to doorway piece, then put a domestic wall endcap at the open end. then you'll have a 1X1 room that you can use for individual bathrooms
6 years later and now I see this, lol. Thanks for the tip!
That bathroom idea for quarters. So simple, so elegant. I hadn't thought of it. Thanks.
I was doing something in another tab at 1:55 when Davey says "domestic three-way" and I was like "holy crap what kind of ad just loaded?!"
And then I was like oh, it's the name of a building piece.
Never mind.
your channel is the best inspiration for fallout 4 building on youtube
I like how this vault is coming along...
i really love the idea of making our own vaults but my god do they snap together like ass-backwards bastards
"Domestic 3-Way" **Bow chicka wow wow**
You're the best, Davey. Thanks for the video!
I love this idea, thank you so much. It has helped me plan where I want to put my rooms for people so I stole this and put my rooms like this. awesome job.
I finally got my fallout 4 to work. I kept thinking you Davey, I needed inspiration!
watching you build your vault has helped me figure out how the he'll I do it, mine was going so wrong >.< so thank you 😃
I have found a way to make 1x1 size rooms for the bathroom. What you need to do is put down the atrium doorway that doesn't have the floor piece attached. Then use the atrium wall bottom piece and attach it so that the wall is to the left or right of the doorway. Then scrap the doorway you put in. Then finally use the atrium corner top piece and put a door in to make it look nice
We love you Davey
That fact that you like the Railroad is pretty cool 👍 I don't think that's a fan favorite tbh, but I really like the faction
This is just delightful :) :)
Have you considered doing another/different vault build after this, like a half built one? I was so frustrated with the lack of decent lighting (for the atrium area especially) that I ended up just building parts of the vault (half an atrium, some bedrooms, a farm area, etc etc) and then used scaffolding to make it look like a good portion of it was still under construction when the bombs fell, rather than just not even having been started. Then I built a shanty town in and around it because while I felt like finishing said vault would be a bit beyond the technological capabilities of most wastelanders, I figure they'd still love to settle there. I'm quite happy with how it turned out, and I'm especially pleased with the fact that it let me use more of the vault than just the main area without having to fiddle with the slanted tunnels. I'd be interested to see what you'd do with that idea.
hey davey, love the channel, keep up the good work!
i have some advice that you may or may not want to take on the bathrooms, but itll take a lot less resources, space, and time spent trying to snap. when i make a bathroom, ill put the door corner piece inside the initial room like you did, then ill switch to the domestic tab and use a door to hall piece and snap a wall end cap on it. i was able to comfortable fit a sink, toilet, potted plant, and trash can with no problems.
cant wait to see what you upload next
This does help me out a bit, I am going for a 3 storey residential area. the top is from that area with the large drop into the caves from the main cavern
Excellent just excellent.
Dude, you have tons of space. Just look up! The place is massive
Davey, quick question, are you ever gonna do an elevator tutorial on how to make elevators in the vaults?
I share your pain with those damn metal supports jutting from the walls. ended up having to do some really creatine messing with space for my robotics workshop.
50k!!!! congrats m8
Hi respawn. what did you do different? I am trying to measure out how you did for the compact rooms as I can see what your talking about but my space does not seem to be lining up? Can you help man?
davey with the stairs and the railings. would it work if you put a single tile at the top of the stairs and use the corner railings. it looks like it will snap?
somebody has some tips to make a bathroom in the overseers office?and for making a room in the atrium?
I feel bad for you Davey.. You seem to be stressing out so much😂 I wish there was something you could do to not stress so much!
Davey how did you make the 90 degree angle with the Atrium End pieces, I can't seem to connect anything to them to make the corner piece there I have to move it out one piece.
"Just experiment, you'll figure it out" hahahaha ok thanks mate that's what I thought I was doing anyways
hey. just a technique i discovered that may be beneficial to you. if you put a second door in your apartments, attach a hall to doorway into that and put an end cap on the other side it makes a great 1 x 1 bathroom. i have one in each of my residential rooms
Ive built a moderate sized Atrium with a large 4 story manufacturing facility off to the side. My residential goes up three stories.
I wanna see what ya did with the overseer window!
Question for you, Davey, or any one at that matter. Does anyone know how to change the headquarters for the railroad? I hate it's current location and want to move it to vault 88.
David! bottom floor corner with door for the bathrooms, would have made that much easier
cool vault
Would love to see you make an overseer's office and/or security office. For both of those, I have no ideas on how to go about making them look interesting.
Yeah, my overseer's office is pretty lame. But I used the security office in the already built part so it's really well decorated
good video he just earned himself a subscriber
Is there a good way to get tons of rubber? I run out very fast
Vaults normally have communal bathrooms, not individual bedrooms.
And a personal bathroom is normally only for the special people. But if you can afford it why not.
you have a ton of space, I made every room in different sectors. I haven't watched from this series from the beginning, why are you only building in the first sector?
Originally, he planned on doing just a smaller vault and building Metro-esque things in the other sectors.
Do you have any idea why the settlers die in the vault (randomly)? My stuff is high, food, beds all of that, but also I get my happiness up to 80 then drops at 71.
will you at one point do the mechanists lair Davey? I was thinking of building a personal, secret bunker of some sorts where i could put all my weapons and gear in a personal armory or something. But i don't have any inspiration beyond that
Are there any fixes for the size glitch not working in the vault?
new video!!
awesome
Instead of using doorway versions of halls you could attach atrium doorways (the ones without the roof or floor).
has anyone tried building a vault throughout the whole entire area? Is it possible to do that?
Hi Davey, I see you wearing a mining helmet, I have tried every one I have, they work on the Settlers for Feck sake even on the display dummies, but a very real lack when they hit my head, go on what's the story.
Entertaining and educational as always. :)
I missed another notification for this channel
Davey, you could make a mini vault in the mechanists lair, with the overseers window lined up with the mechanists little room and make that the overseers office.
It might be something with my game, but The settlement ends before that room. Can't even build in the place with all the typing robobrains.
+Herp Derpington You're not able to build in that area, it's rather upsetting.
+Aaron Consani that's what I said
how did you build your overseer office please?
When will your vault tour becoming out?
weekend sometime
+norespawns Okay I want to see the potential in a vault as you are really good at building!
I would agree. I have watched a few others and they just don't do the videos like he does.
How's the NPC pathing on the structures that you build? Mine always seem to glitch out every time I try to make something decent. Also, they tend to not be able to walk through specific hallways which gives me the shits
What other building plans do you have after the vault?
when are you going to completely finish the sanctuary that's in your Let's Build playlist, or if it is finished can you do a tour of it
Are you using a mod for the objects? If you are what's it called? Just wondering because I'm thinking about getting Fallout 4 on Xbox One I know this is on PS4 but hey.
there's actually a lot of space in that first room, you gotta build up. my vault has 4 floors
I have 3 rooms in a line and at the end is a lavatory with a spinning disco ball
I would've made Jack and Jill Bathrooms, 3x2 or 3x1.
Hey norespawns do you think it is posible to build 3 vaults in vault 88, one for each entrance?
It'd definitely be possible, but pretty impractical.
Yo Davy after you're done with a proper vault are you going to do like a shantytown underground?
In which category are those signs at? ( screening, residential etc. ) I can't seem to find them!
Under Decorations there's a tab for a Vault submenu (they have both the flat ones and the light up ones, the former are what show in the rotating tab under the vault submenu)
+azure chaos So that's why I can't find them, the Vault Decorations tab is kinda buggy with some mods. Thanks for the answer! :)
How come you didnt show what you did to change the vault from the other video
Personnaly, I think my vault is going to have publics bathroom, like in vault 101 in Fallout 3.
Was there a video on the overseers office? Sorry for my inconvenience.
Overseer's*
no - it's nothing really fancy atm.
i doubt you'll see this but have you done or can you do a video on taffington boathouse and covenant. I cant do anything with crops or walls there and no good placeß for water in covenant. Heres hoping..
^^^^
Is your atrium now only five units wide? Two on each side of your entrance? If so how did you do that without the corner pieces?
Put the Atrium end caps on after you put on the corner pieces. You might have to remove floor pieces too, but it will all snap into place.
You need to do the side walls before you put down the atrium end pieces. If you put the atrium - wall bottom pieces down first the end pieces will clip through no problem
Davey do you have doom ( 2016 ) ?
if you do you should make videos on the snapmap
are you going to do a overseer build?
Not a lot of rubber left, I'm wondering what you're using it all for...
Probably for science reasons
Mats. Loads of mats.
vault pieces need rubber
You're given so much to start with alone; as much as he has built he should have more, probably went to those 30 doorways
Nice
Will or have you done a play through of fallout I know it would take a long time but I would like to see you do it
After I saw the Video, I can't believe that I forgot the bathrooms. I wanted to make a Cantina like in Vault 81 but Atrium and Room parts don't snap.
You have to add the doorway endcap and connect a doorway.
HAHAHA wow what a nice settlement! :)
+Miko S.O it's still a settlement
Build a camp outside of the vault, kind of like they weren't allowed in the vault or there waiting to get in
Can u make a vault atrium just like yours?
With Scrap everything you can remove the girders.. I have. :-)
Please make a railroad vault or secret headquarters...I mean all your caravans have the uniforms already.
A lot more space than you think there is
Your just trying to build everything in one chamber
The thing is, you **can** build everything in that one chamber, it's bigger than you first think. I set off trailing hallways through tunnels for the residential areas, doing fancy things with levels maximising space by the stairs... then realised I'd not even finished using all the space on the 1st floor (that's 2nd floor if you're in the US, I guess), so I focused on just that main area and have 24 bedrooms and everything else needed (and some that's not needed) and still not used all the space.
Good morning
walk through of your vault?
Davey, you have a *lot* more room than you seem to think (not least because it potentially covers 5 floors). I have every room needed and then some. If you're wondering what that includes see below, if not interested... then skip it, I guess lol.
My atrium is 9 long & 7 wide.
(All bedrooms have a 1x1 bathroom attached unless otherwise stated.)
Ground Floor:
Cafeteria = 4x3
Hospital = 9x2 +2x1 (L-shape doesn't include the store just the surgery chair & phoropter)
Clinic (store) = 3x2 (+ 1x1 bath)
Gym = 2x3 + 2x1 (L-shape)
Reactor = 3x3 (2 floors high)
Barber = 2x2
General Store = 2x2
Toilet block = 2x2
Classroom = 2x3 (technically redundant but I wanted one lol)
Factory = 5 x 2
Empty space (about 7 x 2) where I had the tunnel to the N-E sector that's no longer needed, I've not decided what to put there yet.
1st Floor:
Security = 4x3 (with 2 2x2 bedrooms; 1 2x1 bedroom - for security chief; 2x1 bathroom & 1x1 "armoury" all coming off it)
Hydroponics = 4x7
Bar = 4x2
Clothing store = 2x2
Armour store = 2x2
Weapons store = 2x2 (+ 2x2 bedroom)
Bedrooms: 3x2 = 1 and 2x2 =3
Store room/maintenance = 2x2 (it was an empty space I didn't know what to do with lol)
(Upper part of the Reactor 3x3)
2nd Floor: (Covers one side and the far end of the space)
Overseers suite = Office 3x3x2 (L-shape) + 3x2 living/bedroom + 2x1 bathroom
Security nook = 2x2 (section of hallway with security desk like vault 81 has)
Bedrooms: 2x2 = 7; 3x2 =1;
Suite = 2x2 livingroom + 2x2 bedroom + 1x1 bath
3rd Floor: (covers only one side above 2nd floor)
Nursery: 4x2 + 2x2 bedroom attached (no bathroom - obviously not a necessary room but just wanted one for completion)
Bedrooms 3x2 = 3
Suite = 3x2 living room + 2x2 bedroom + 2x1 bath
Suite = 2x2 living room + 2x2 bed + 2x1 (kid's) bed + 2x1 bath
Stairs up to a 4th floor that I've left blocked off because I don't really need to use it lol.
TL;DR I have ALL the rooms just in that main area of the vault, this amounts to 24 bedrooms, all 6 stores have their own rooms as well as having a security room, gym, factory, hydroponics, hospital, barber and cafeteria. And I still have 2 floors that have space down one side of the atrium unused. Also, I noticed that if you have an inaccessible space between one room and the next then you can lose settlers in there, so it's best to fill those spaces which is why I have a few L-shaped rooms. I have 25 settlers so they don't have a bedroom each, but they could have if I added a couple in the unused space I have, but I like having 2 beds in the bigger bedrooms so it's no big deal.
please do another vault tutorial
now i feel like i need to scrap everything i did
Hey davey how did you get 4 walls to work on the residents because i think you either just used mods or you really never like to show us
8:15 Davey being conservative? never thought I'd hear that
_rips off rubber Davey mask to reveal I was in fact Boris Johnson all along_
+norespawns oh so you ARE that business casual Shrek look alike. I knew it.
+norespawns hey I talk to my stuffed animals so don't say you are a creep
Heya - did not realize til now I've been spelling your name wrong 'Davey' - sorry mate~!
Do you think the season pass is worth it on sale for $40
I for one don't think so. I would wait until it's something like $30.
It wasn't worth it for me. :/
+Elder Yaag But I dont know if or when it will be 30 and dont feel like waiting until this Holiday season when it most likely be on sale
Pedro.. It most certainly is worth the money. If you like Settlement Building or if you don't you get Automatron, Far Harbor and Nukaworld(On the 20th) which is like a 50$ value not including the 3 Workshop DLCs.. If I remember correctly. So yeah, get it!
+Spencer Newman Well im watching norespawns so liking settlement building is a no brainer really but I was scared that I was paying only for the build items but looking at some reviews Far Harbor is great and Automatron is Ok plus I get more locations to build at so I most likely will get it. Thanks for help clarifying that it is worth it.
+Pedro Da moth Definitely, go for it. The main problem people have with buying the season pass is the building related DLC, but if you like those, get it. The other DLC are amazing as well.
It would make more sense if you made your vault into a minute men headquarters
But that's the castle
You should build novac from fallout 3 I have built novac market in my sanctuary just as a reference
Novac was from nv
+Josh pratt oh yeah woops
you can make a single room but its a pain
Croissant
Baguette
Gateaux
bechamel
Why are you staying in this room again?
Please go and sign Hey I'm Starlord's petition
Can someone make a mod to have babies in your settlements? One that would work on PS4
aaaaaannnnd now I'm going delete my whole vault because mine looks shit compared to yours, thanks Davey always gotta put a brother down 😂
I did that after getting inspiration from other people and now I am completely out of resources and can't get more
AdventuremanNB same here, I can't get enough caps to buy the resources in bulk from the Diamond city stores.
Bayvid
I'm not ashamed to say that I've been completely ripping off your design (I know I should be.) But there is no way I can design a vault myself. A settlement sure. But not a vault.
second
37th
you ran out of space !? yes compact building is important, and compensation for idiotic NPC AI pathing is important but there is plenty of space.
(I have spent over 60 hours playing around, modded and unmodded, level 85 toon and a level 20 toon, with designs and finally got the sense of what does and doesn't work.)
and yes, wearing a mining helmet for lighting when building is really helpful.
He is running out of space because he decided to limit his vault to the first cavern. On purpose.
Currently over 1300hrs, lvl 118, lvl 65, lvl 32, lvl 21 survival.
