  • Slight theory/complaining video this time around - the theory side being on what style of lighting (in my personal opinion) suits a vault. The complaining side focusing on the fact that all the lights used to light up Vault 81 have not been added to the workshop - because reasons.

    Whoa, the lighting at Home Plate is gorgeous! That really stole the show in this one. Seriously, amazing work.

    The single light bulbs actually have the best shine in the game. Four can light up a room well.

      I usually put a shittier light in and use those light bulbs for the main lighting, but I sink them or hide them inside of walls to give the effect that the shitty light actually works.

    • @maygan62697
      @maygan62697 8 лет назад

      In the vault, you can usually sink them mostly into the ceiling or into the walls just by pushing them in there and watching the bottom workshop bar to see when the build (for me, its the X button) button changes from a dull to a bright color since you can't see if the item is red through the wall.
      In my opinion they look alright with the bulb still protruding from the roof, with just the stem sunken in.

    Lighting is a pain the ass. The ceiling lights dont snap or properly attach. The wall lights stick out horribly. and the lights are dim or too focused.

  • @smcfadden1992
    @smcfadden1992 8 лет назад +2

    theres a square ceiling light that looks like a vent, its added with the vault tec dlc, if you place it on a ceiling than pick it back up as to move it, it will disappear into the ceiling where you can replace it, it can help you hide some lights

    I figured one thing out, using the flat ceiling lights that came with the Vault DLC, you can actually clip then through the roof of any piece of room in a vault. Now bare with me, this will not show the lights, but it will light up a place. If you do that all over a corridor then add visible lights to the roof, walls and so on, then you can have a nice lit vault while it still appears that the lights are coming from actual lights you can see.

    I also headed to vault 81 for ideas & inspiration, I think I might go round them all actually. I was surprised how dark it seems in areas, I don't think it had really registered before (maybe I'd had my pip-boy light on when I'd been there before). But having a detailed look around something more important bothered me, there are only about 15 beds, yet well over 20 people (I lost count at 24, IIRC).
    On the lighting front, I noticed the same thing about the lights used, the edge lights seem mostly for looks and just covering the darker areas at the walls, the big spot lights do all the work. I had used the round ones from wasteland workshop because they looked the best when sunk into the ceiling (they sink naturally into the atrium ceiling, but then I used console commands to copy it around), but I was getting fed up with how many I'd needed and the atrium had still ended up with 3 street lights down each side to banish the dark spots. So, while building a new wing played with other lights, the brightest light (meaning needing the least number) still seems to be the first initial hanging light. It's a slightly warmer light though, which works in some places but not necessarily others. So, I've been replacing them with the hanging lights and already have over 150 of the round ones back, but you only get steel when scrapped, there's no glass :(. However, they don't really have the right aesthetic for a vault so I thought about trying to hide them within another light type or something. I'm still playing around with it. But even with the right lights for some reason Bethesda made it so we couldn't stick things on the high part of the walls of the atrium (the bits that slope slightly inwards), with a little work you *can* get ceiling lights on the very apex though.
    I have used a turret spotlight in the entrance; I used console commands to turn it upside down and sink it into the ceiling (I did it with the some of my other turrets too since they've not given us ceiling turrets, which seems a big oversight for a vault build if you ask me - but then we shouldn't be surprised considering the pieces we're lacking means we couldn't recreate vault 81 anyway), but like you say, you really wouldn't want that oscillating light constantly in your main part of the vault.
    /ramble

    I couldn't care less about building a vault myself; for some reason I just have zero interest in building my own vault. What i ended up doing with vault 88 was build a base at the pharmacy full of settlers, shops and supply depots and then building a bunch of small bases/camps throughout the cave system. I used your carrot+robot trick with some scout assaultons that i made that run around the caves to "explore and collect supplies". I specifically assigned guards to posts at different camps so they travel/patrol between them. I treat it like an exploratory settlement where they scavenge the caves and there are supposed to be monsters and whatnot like the fog in far harbor. Its come to be my favorite settlement
    I really hope you try something like this as well because it all fits together SO well. Sinking new floors into the pharmacy/ basement is so easy and it is already pretty well lit up. Oh I love it

    I don't have a twitter account so I can't send pictures of how it looks, but one thing you might want to play with in terms of accent or ambient lighting is to rug-glitch high-tech lights into walls where you want a slight glow. (I haven't been able to make the other kinds of lights work yet; they tend to be very harsh and bright, and their radiant effects do weird things.) You get two different colors and a decent variety of glow heights and sizes so you have some variables to play with. Might be worth a shot.

    the thing is, when building a cell in Creation kit. if you add a lamp, there is no light, you add what ever light you want. it doesnt even have to be tied to a lamp, you just do what ever you want, how strong, if its gonna be flood or spot, what angle, if its gonna cast a shadow etc, thats why its almost impossible to get the same results in your settlements.

    So for anyone reading, I know this isnt the best video to ask this on, but as someone new to /really/ getting into settlement building on my new main playthrough, what are some of the best locations to build?
    I'm talking like easiest to clear of junk, best ground to work on, nice locations, etc. I'm guessing Starlight Drive In, but I'm interested to hear what people have to say. I'm not looking to go for a HUGE settlement, I just need something to ease me into it. My perk spread isnt like min/maxed for the most caps to spend on supplies and I'm not that high of a level yet and whatnot. I just want a settlement I can be proud of lol.

      @nessuno1984 8 лет назад

      I don't understand why everyone likes Starlight. It's not flat and has bitumen over almost all of it so you are very limited where you can grow crops. I suggest Country Crossing as the crop area is flat so easy to build on and the settlement is not big. It also has a nice outlook and doesn't get attacked hard. Build on the crop end and not on the ruined house end as there are major routing issues for settlers around the ruined house.

      Angel Best Very informative, thanks! I've already made my first one in starlight as of now, (I used those garden plots or whatever) and used shack floors to level everything out. Came out pretty good for the "Minutemen Castle-West" vibe I was going for. I'll check that one out next though!

    Actually the light sources you see in locations in the game are not the same as the ones you get from the buildable light structures for your settlements. See what Bethesda does (and modders as well) is place the physical light structures into the game and then add whatever light sources they feel best lights the area in the way they wish in the locations that fit what they want... and sometimes (depending on the game) those light sources may not be directly under any of the actual light structures, but instead floating out and away to provide the best lighting.
    Buildable light structures for settlement mode requires the light source keyed to the structure that will give you consistent lighting in a consistent spot when you build, and that light source is pretty much set up to always be close the light structure... again for consistency even though sometimes it doesn't provide the best result (location and use depending).
    Also there is shadowed light and non-shadowed light. All buildable structures for settlement mode (baring the fire barrel) produce non-shadowed light. Whereas at times many map location will make a degree of use of shadowed light sources (you see some of it in Vault 81).
    Modders really just modify the light sources (area size, brightness, color) that are keyed to the specific structures, not were the light spawns in regard to the structure. More experienced modders however know how to create new light structures with their own new keyed light sources (I ain't one of those).
    Essentially what this all means is that you really can't look at a place like Vault 81 and think you'd be able to replicate it even if we had been given those few other lights as options, most likely because they might not have their keyed light sources place in the same way.

    I've not a twitter, but I do work on my vault. currently it winds throughout the entire cave system, I have only one corner clipping into the vault thus far, and not yet finished setting the whole thing up. I am about to do the residential bloc, I also need to get the gym in order and shrink the eating area just a little bit

    Great video! You ask about lighting. one thing i've noticed is that the vault-tec lights will snap into the ceiling..i.e. not be seen but still give off a lot of light. Dunno if you have noticed that. It's how I was able to light up the entrance area and security office. I've got a video up of my a disco I built in mine, but it's all modded and the lights are stronger with mods. I have had luck with the three fluorescent lights in the base game, the ones that come with 2 wall packs (what we call them in the lighting industry) and a ceiling mount that have a white glass and a metal finish. they seem to fit the theme of the vault and give off a decent amount of light that's not as harsh as the vault lights.

    this is my disco...also a brief shot of the Atrium..this is modded though. I'll grab some screen shots of my non modded vault tonight. I've spent about 13+ hours building this modded vault...

    One thing i dont like with that graphics engine is the fact that the more lights you have, the darker the darkness becomes. There's no real ambient occlusion in the game and it makes lighting such a pain in the ass. Its quite sad actually that those issues exists in this game as well as skyrim as both of them are awesome games to begin with.

    I've been using the mods for brighter vault lighting here on PC, but I've come to the conclusion that even with brighter lights, it doesn't make Vault 88 look any better.
    For my vault I also tried to remake Vault 81 as close as possible, but there was just something off about it: Vault 81 has a nice bluish tint as you mentioned, coupled with some volumetric fog, especially noticeable in the atrium. These lighting details give it character, and though I have mods to make the vault brighter, I actually lose a lot of depth that comes from the shadows and dark areas as you mentioned, and reminds me of disabling all shadows in a graphics options menu.
    The really unfortunate thing is that neither option is good, vanilla lights are too weak and light up very small radius with high intensity, modded versions are very strong and light up quite a lot but it's almost too uniform, and the prevailing shadows look pitch black because of the contrast. The atmosphere is just not there.

    from a dedicated viewer and master race member, im genuinely sorry you dont have mods available. huge dick move on bethesdas part and its looking as though itll never happen due to the last dlcs near release. just know that i respect your builds more because you dont have mods than if you did and had easier routes for you constructs.
    youre right about the lighting too, is draws the eye to busy areas and the shadow hides blank spots and emptiness while also providing a frame and degree of realism.

    -__- Ahh. I always hated the lighting range to light up to and the strength of it. Low, medium, high intensity should be for it. Skyrim 5 suffers from this a bit, but not as bad as Fallout 4. I hate it when places can't be lit up without a lot o lights. As a 4 length by 4 with, large wood floor, squared room size. I shouldn't have to have a light for every square. As if you do less there will be darkness. Also the old street lights in your main hero's town. Should be re makeable & look good to give wide area light. NOT rusted.
