  • Microsoft's Surface Laptop Studio 2 is faster, and you could tell that from the spec sheet. But with a much higher price point and little in the way of improvements, it has a long road to prove it's truly better than the original model.

Hey all! Thanks for watching. Would love this laptop if it came in at the original price of the Surface Laptop Studio. More expensive, it's competing with the Macbook Pro 14, and it doesn't always win that battle.
Also wanted to highlight audio since I forgot to mention it in the video. I believe the Laptop Studio 2 sports the same four omnisonic speakers as the original. I don't have the original on hand to compare the sound directly, but it doesn't sound like much has changed. Regardless, the audio is fantastic, really only beat out by the Macbook Pro 14.

The sad part about all the reviews I am seeing covering the new Laptop Studio 2 is that they all seem to missing the forest for the trees. I've yet to see a single review done by someone who is interested in the Surface Laptop Studio for the fairly obvious feature that separates it from likely every other laptop that showed up in the benchmark tests here.
I just have a hard time taking a review about this laptop seriously if it never even touches on the feature a person looking to purchase this laptop should be most interested in if this laptop is on their radar.

@@jacobroach6178 There is a nuanced but particularly obvious reason for his statement though. Are you saying there is nothing about the Surface Laptop Studio 2 that would drop the MacBook off the short list of someone considering what Microsoft is offering?

@@jacobroach6178 Apple has lost the one big battle around which this device revolves: Offering a 2-in-1 with good or very good pen technology. Apple has consistently refused to either release an iPad pro with a regular MacOS, or to pen enable their MacBooks together with a tablet mode. Comparing the Surface Laptop Studio entirely on specs doesn´t do it justice. Now, if the 2-in-1 capability justifies such a steep premium in price is something everyone must decide for him-/herself. The alternative is a gaming laptop which is 1000-1500$ cheaper and still offers better performance, combined with a small Wacom Cintiq.

So I have original, and I barely used the pen (not an artist), but now that I'm in a college Math class, the pen has really come in handy. It was retroactively worth it
The feels natural, especially with the whiteboard application but it only sucks that it's only online to work (specifically the whiteboard app)

@@Duskydog419 Def not just for that. I'm an engineer/designer working on a surfacebook 2 right now and really like the ability to have something to draw quick but detailed sketches on and then roll right over to a beast of a system to design/simulate on something quite ram and cpu heavy like solidworks. Unfortunately, the detach feature on my device requires you to shut down solidworks. This device could allow me to avoid shutting down solidworks along with dealing with the finicky detach feature. I don't think anyone that is looking to do graphic design is using this anyways, you just don't need this much beef.

I own the first studio laptop and I can honestly say it all depends on how you utilize the laptop me. Personally, I think it's the best that suits my needs because of the stylish pen and the stage mode. Those two alone makes my workflow as a photographer editor the best. If you are getting a laptop off of just specs than I would not recommend it. But if you are going based off the bells and whistles that you actually utilize, the studio is hands down the best laptop

Me too , i have the SLS1 . Today after 18 months , my battery capacity is at 96% ....quite impressive . I saw the SLS2 and i was quite shocked that they are asking now for SGD1000 more , and they are offering only the basic XE graphics , the product is now heavier , bulkier , and the ghosting on the screen is 42% worse than SLS1 . See Cbutters tech review on youtube . Its literally so shocking cos the SLS1 had average ghosting already ....so to be 42% worse puts the screen in the bad category . 120hz refresh cannot help much , ghosting is a separate different quality that many dont know about unless they game .

Like what’s said , it has uncanny perks like the stage mode . Which is unique . Think 🤔 presentation to client if u sell insurance , think reading E-newspapers while you are at a foodcourt or cafe but you don’t want your screen looking too far away like on normal laptops , and think watching movies in bed , where it’s stable and the screen seems closer , the stage mode , + the tablet mode which I use when I m in the subway are very good to use . There isn’t a product like this out there .

Love the review. Thank you for publishing this, really helps for people who want a high-end (OP) device on the Windows side.
I will say though, the comparisons to MBP is slightly unfair given that these are two completely different devices, one literally folds sporting 3 distinct form factors with a full multi-touch 120Hz touch screen, and the other is a completely traditional laptop design with the only thing seperating it from a typical laptop design is a notch that does not even support biometrics.
I have the 16" MBP M1 Pro, whilst I think the hardware is second to none, I just cannot stand the Mac OS, if you don't own any other Apple device, the value/feature proposition is bleak. It lacks so many modern and basic tools/features, I struggle to find how the OS has evolved in the last 8 years or so....
This is why I am really seeking an appropriate Windows 11 alternative and the fact that MS make the hardware, this is the sole reason why I will only jump to a Surface device, one that packs a punch similar to the M2 Macs.

@kafaae That is sadly no option for me. My laptop needs to be my working, creativity and gaming machine for on the go. At home, I have a powerful pc (+monitors). This makes the SLS2 and laptops like the Asus ROG flow X16 so nice (and pricey). They can do it all. But at this price point they have to deliver. X16 has a rather poor battery life and not as good pen input, which is acceptable for me. It really depends on your preferences and needs.

The response time on the screen is so depressingly bad that It doesn't even really make sense to have a 120hz screen in most situations... It's the highest latency of any monitor and even TV I've ever owned, and it's very noticeable. You can even see the absolutely atrocious response time on that little clip of it rendering a game at 7:30 when you move the camera, everything goes blurry, and when the van goes by you see a huge trail behind it. It's ridiculous that it's so bad for this price, it blows my mind. I'm just trying to keep it pristine so I can return it bc of this PoS screen.

great device but only worth it for people that can take full advantage of the form factors and want a hardware upgrade over the original laptop studio. Its rigiculous to compare it to a mac that does not even offer touch support.

With these “studio” or creator laptops it would be better to start with the high level benchmarks and then dive more deeply into more use case based investigation based on what you see it doing well. For example, it seem like based on specs upgrade MS was targeting 3D design with this model, would have liked a deep dive into it for 3D designers (i.e. Blender, Maya, Substance workloads). actual wattage of the card (which makes or breaks the system) cooling abilities, serviceability - this is why people are confused because they compare paper specs, well also, that's what manufacturers want you to do anyway. but a real comparison of bang for the buck goes way beyond paper specs. does it throttle? just because you have i9 doesn't mean you get to use it... you know, things like those. in that sense, this review is as superficial as it gets. I'm sure it serves a purpose - but for an actual bang for the buck review look for other in-depth ones. can I use it at peak performance whilst connected on TB, for example? at what wattage does that make or break?
