A Crass Course in Making Atmospheric Nighthaunts

- On today’s crash course: building and painting Atmospheric Nighthaunt, or however people want to describe them. Foghaunt, Misthaunt, the Wild hunt, whatever the case, they’re simply ghosts looking like ghosts. I honestly didn’t think this really needed a minipainting tutorial, but considering how often I’m asking for a how to, it was inevitable. It’s a very easy process and the guide is only really close to five minutes because I wanted to note things that could go wrong, per se. There’s not much that can, but with such a straightforward Warhammer painting scheme, all it takes is one misstep to find a surprising amount of time wasted.
Nighthaunts are often painted in more elaborate designs for obvious reasons, but an easy monochromatic design like this still holds its own extremely well even pitted against toher beautiful age of sigmar armies. It’s honestly a head scratched how they’re still one of my top-performers on Instagram, but a ghost that looks like a ghost does the trick I guess. The mist and fog sure help, as do the blowing leaves. No doubt it’s the combination of special effects and simplicity that make them eye catching.
While this was done for Nagash and his Nighthaunt Warhammer army, this special effects mini could be very easily adapted to dungeons and dragons miniatures. I’m sure there’s plenty of cases a ghost mini would be fun in D&D, and I know dungeon masters probably want to spend as little time as possible on painting in favor of the roleplay fun. These also serve well in a diorama design, and my full on diorama performed very well in my first Armies on Parade. And as said before, they still get a lot of compliment whenever they’re brought up in miniature painting talks.
Crass Course: Ever want to quickly learn a few things about a topic but don’t have the time to sit through long videos? Enter Crass Course. As the name implies, it’s a collection of short tutorial videos focusing on a certain topic, whether they are hobby related or video game simulation based construction. I’ll impart the knowledge I know on the topic in a somewhat roundabout way, kinda like you asked the cool guy at the store how to do something that he does frequently. As the name implies, it's complete with completely unnecessary humor and inserts to make a blend of informative and entertainment.

First shot at a ‘full’ tutorial video, so there’s teething issues. I still aim to make my channel’s guides short but detailed: It’s a crash course. If it’s still a bit too fast, feel free to let me know, but I think this is a good balance.
P.S. - I know it didn’t show super glueing sticks to the base. Your call if you want these guys even harder to move around.
"Games Journalist Easy" is just the kind of instructions I need.
Why don't your videos get more views? It's bewildering. Amazing editing, great content, just top shelf.
Thanks for the kind words! It's the algorithm really. I just don't have the follower base to get decent traction, but Instagram Reels have been helping on that front. I don't mind: Slow growth is relaxing!
@@DDBuilds get yours babe. Good luck.
Honest you could ignore the tutorial and just have a good laugh. this was hilarious so i had to watch it twice
Thanks for the kind words! I aim for a fun balance
This might be the chadest colour scheme for an entire ghost army, contrats dude !!!
I don't think I reinvented the wheel on the classic ghost look, but thanks for the praise!
Mann I really have been putting of painting my ghosts but now I really want to paint them so thankss
"Game journalist easy mode" killed me outright. Well done, well done.
Because of your video you made me hunt down a Soul Wars box set at my local hobby store to build some Nighthaunts. I hope you're fucking happy. ( Actually looks stunning in a group, thanks for the idea.)
Haha I hope they turn out great! Happy hobbying!
This is amazing, great channel! Subscribed ;)
this was funny tutorial. had me laughing throughout the whole video. felt like an infomercial
Gotta separate myself from the pack somehow 👍
Excellent, I like it very much
This is how tutorials should be! ❤
Thank you!
Amazing video, great editing and top tier quality! I am reposting this to every tabletop group I have. Love the humor. More people need to see this!
You're very kind! Thanks for the support!
I started working on a Nighthaunt army myself. After priming I realize these guys are tough to come up with a neat color scheme.
Loved this I now want to buy an army like this because of this and how bad ass everything looked at the end as always amazing work on the vid and loved the easy explanation of how to for everything
Thanks man! Just mind the wallet cause this stuff is a cliff into debt haha
Great content
Loved the tutorial! Do you think some spray on varnish would help with the clinginess/ falling off of the leaves, or would it just mess up the cotton?
I never did varnish them but it could plausibly help double-secure the ones that are truly held by glue. From what I've seen, most of the leaves that fall off are the ones that got loosely tangled with the cotton and are bound to fall off eventually.
the army shots are very impressive!
Omg this is amazing.
mmmm yes... give me more!
Working on them! Not known for my speed at the moment
Holy fuck!!!! Now I want to strip my night haunts and do this
I'm sure your nighthaunt are awesome as is - but you could always do a war cry band if you want to give it a go!
@@DDBuilds I have not even looked into warcry, are the rules different from age of sigmar?
Mmmn...Kingdom Death Thicc-
hey would you have another recomandation for a cyan paint spray ? i am not able to find the two you said on amazon
I haven't tried them but Rustoleum Imagine Turquoise or St. Tropex might be good alternatives
are those trees from outside or modeltrees?
Ok but what if you varnish the bases after aplying the leafs, would that make harder for the leafs to come out of the cotton?
Probably wouldn't do much, and if anything spraying it on would blow extra leaves away. Probably better to add a tiny bit more glue after they first dry
@@DDBuilds I’m THIS close to start a Nighthaunt army with a scheme very similar to this one. Thank you for your repply, great video.
strange question but is there a picture of your black coach anywhere? I'm using this scheme because 1)I have alot of nighthaunt and i dont wanna paint my brains out and 2)This scheme is BEAUTIFUL and im using the picture on the video as reference but wasent sure if you had a picture anywhere else of the full model! Love the video and editing is CRISP
Thanks! There's photos on my Instagram but im not sure how many more angles ive uploaded of it offhand. There's a link on this profile or you could look up my account "Datxdiver". Might have to upload more pics as a throwback!
Are those literal sticks from out side or model trees?
I was wondering how you managed to do the fog. Ultra thinned down color? May I get the same result with rattle spray can? For a pure white fog, would just cotton and hair spry do the job?
It's just light build up with a rattle can using the color you want: Back and forth wafting as shown in the tutorial, taking care not to go too far or it looks weird. I'd imagine hair spray would be fine for pure white, but doing it with white spray paint or varnish would probably give a little more durable results.
@@DDBuilds thank you, I will try!
Do this with an airbrush and you can probably paint an entire army in an afternoon lol
iu thought it was frozen HORSES in the thumbnail lol
lol I suppose that's an idea for another time
