Water Pump Pliers Restoration [Laser Engraving And Red Rubber Handles]

  • In this restoration of the old rusty pipe wrench, I have inaugurated my new laser, in which I have applied a laser engraving on the pliers. The very old water pump pliers I had to hot bluing so that it is protected from rust in the future and the handles covered with liquid rubber. Furthermore, when restoring the old pliers, I had to drill, file, remove rust, sandblast, hot bronze and laser. I found this old hand tool in an old barn and had to have it for this restoration video.
    ▬ What did I do ?! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The old water pump pliers was heavily rusted, so I sprayed with rust remover the moving part of the pliers, that was enough already fortunately to be able to open them again. After disassembly I had to remake the pivot bolt, since it could not be knocked out I had to drill it out. Afterwards I sandblasted all parts in the sandblasting cabin. To protect the pliers from rust in the future, I heated the components in the hardening furnace and cooled them in oil, this process is called hot burnishing. I covered the handles with liquid rubber to make the pliers feel better in your hand and to protect you from possible electric shocks. Finally, I laser engraved a laser engraving on the old water pump pliers with a laser machine.
    ▬ Good to know ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
I used the following tools: Rust remover spray, pin punch, hammer, propane torch, starter, cordless screwdriver, drill, chisel, lathe, lathe chisel, pliers, milling cutter, sandpaper, sandblasting cabinet, corundum as abrasive, file, key file, hardening furnace, forging pliers, canola oil, rubber coating, screw, ratchet, laser machine.

Why you didn't treat the bolt same way with the pliers?

Back when they were common and used for tools, I HATED the things. They ALWAYS would slip, pinching skin on the palm of the hand and leaving a huge blood-blister. You won't find many today because they were thrown so far away. Now that the old biter is restored nice and pretty (nice work BTW) cut the POS in 10 pieces, melt the chunks down and cast a lawn ornament from it. Perhaps a peaceful, harmless garden gnome.

These are knipex brand and have built in handle stop to keep from hands from being pinched. In general I agree that the standard slipjoint pliers suck but not in this particular case.

@@garageliving3658Sorry to disparage the Knipex pliers. The other ones were especially fiendish in that they would always wait until the user was thinking "Hey they might work this time!" ...

i really enjoy these videos! the content as well as the editing style is really great. although you didn’t do any welding in this video, i’d like to suggest for any future videos that have welding to maybe put a dim box overlay on the clips with bright lights? this would make your videos a lot more accessible to people with epilepsy or light sensitivity. keep up the awesome vids :)

Nice work, but the title of the video is misleading in Swedish. It says “Restaurering av rörtång” but “rörtång” is Swedish for pipe wrench (a Swedish invention by the way). But what you restored is a “polygrip”, a tongue-and-groove plier (or adjustable plier).

  • @capiain3

it is not pipe wrench. it is waterpump plier.

I have 2 pairs of these VBW "Gland Nut Pliers" (That's what said on the manufacturer's box) that I was given with my issue toolkit as a Gas Fitting Apprentice in 1969. They were commonly called Gordons because up to changing to VBW brand the previous issue version was made by Gordon Tools in the UK. Apart from the red paint mostly wearing off they are still in perfect working condition after daily use and abuse for 40 years when I retired and still get used pretty regularly now.
