The Flamingo!!!! LOL memories....what..."cloudy" memories!!
Wow. Thanks for this video. I lived there when I was a very small child in the early '70s. I don't know why I understood Humpty Dumpty's profession at age 4 - but we knew her even back then.
Thank you so much. 1988-1991 the best time of my life!!
We were there then too!
thank you. I was a corpsmen at the hospital from 1976-1978. A flood of great memories!
Thanks for the memories. I was a sailor on the USS Independence from 74-78 and made many Med cruises, made many trips to Napoli. And Humpty Dumpty always welcomed us to Napoli!
Who could forget Humpty Dumpty?!?
I was an IS2 with CTF67 working in the NSA building from 86-88. This brought back so many memories. Thanks
I was stationed there in the early 90s, and my family is still there now... so I get to return.
I love Naples!! I was part of the Marine guard from 1996 to 1998...and yes I remember Angono barracks!
The American Hotel, was there! That's where I stayed when we arrived. There was a little Trattoria next door. A Wendy's opened on base while I was there too. You had the NEX spot on. The Wendy's was left side of the NEX. Before that on the right was the Quick Stop over in a corner. There was also a calling center where we use to phone home from on the side. Days before cell phone and everyone had net access. I use to rack up some money at that call center.
I have to come back here about once a month to refresh my memory of this event in my life. I was there from March 1971 to April 1974. I worked at Afsouth, same building as the restaurant next to the main gate. Now, it all seems surreal to me. You really did a great job on this video. I think you so much.
Thank you for posting. I just saw this video. Hallo to all Americans. I'm neapolitan and every summer from 68 to 71 I worked in the Beverage Store as a "bag boy" ( no Sir, I'm not employed and I work only for tips, thank you) and all the Americans came there for sodas, biers and alcoholic beverages. 11 cents for a coke, a bud,Miller, 12 for michelob. 6 dollars a bottle of Chivas, 3 for JDaniels.
Today in my seventies I think back to those times with nostalgia.
That's amazing! We we're stationed there 93 -96! This is just like I remember. Had my son at that hospital!
This is amazing. That's where my dad was stationed, and that's the hospital where I was born in 85. This is amazing
I was stationed here and my daughter was born in 85 too!

Thank you! It felt surreal not being able to find the navy base! I was 79-81. Had a stay in that hospital - while there I fabricated a “silver tongue” award for one of the docs in the morgue.
Thank you for the video. We were there from 87-92. My husband worked at the NATO base. I worked at the hospital in the newborn nursery. Wonder what they are doing with the building now. My kids were born there. Wonderful memories.
Appreciate the trip down memory lane. I was at the NATO base in 92-93. I loved my time there. Had an apartment in Licola. When you were going up the street by the naval station, in my head I was thinking "It's the theater." I took an Italian language class in the US high school there at the University of La Verne satellite branch. Anyway, great memories. Thanks for sharing this.
Wow this was amazing. I was stationed in Naples and had to pull watch at agnano gates... I worked the last shift that the agnano base was open in 05... you really brought back some memories I honestly forgot about. Hard to realize it has been 17 years...
Marine?
I was stationed there also in 1996-1998. Wow, thanks for the memories!!
I was there in 1991-1992, My daughter Brooke was born in that hospital. We lived down in Sicily and 2 weeks prior to all the women delivering we had to go to the Storks nest and stay until we delivered. What a great time and great memories! Now this month my daughter will have a baby. So I am getting pictures of the hospital she was born in and taking pictures of where we carried her home to for the babies room.
I was there from 1977 to 1982!! Thank You for this.
Magnus Soevgaard Missed you as I arrived there in 1982.
The middle gate before the Main gate was in front of the Baskin Robbins Ice Cream and as you went toward the NSA building was a McDonalds. There were 2 hotels that we were staying in the yellow one and the one next to it across the street from the main gate. I use to walk from the other side of Sulfurtora. from the NATO Barracks to work at the NAVAL Base Agnano. Great times. Thanks for posting this video.
i still live in naples, i go there often, to explore. kinda sad, though. they could have kept this as another detachment, like capodichino
derek lee eskelson I know that I would hate the new location. This was the best area to be in.
they made a new, huge base in Gricignano, naples. everything is inside of it: housing, school, gym, bowling, pizza places, stores, Exchange, navy federal credit union, etc. i think they did it especially for security reasons. (terrorists) @@sandmancat294
Thank you for posting this, my daughter was born in the hospital. I remember Dr. Andrew suggesting I walk up the hill to the hospital to induce labor, which I did and sure enough she was born that same evening. So many memories. Thank you!
1988 my daughter also was born in pozzuoli agnano whit doc. Andrew 35 yrs go next month
@@patriziaterry2257 @Patrizia Terry Omg! Patrizia my daughter was also born 35 years ago, she turned 35 this April. Ma sei Italiana? Quanti bei ricordi!
Oh my gosh...what memories this brings back! We were there from mid 1971 thru 1972. When we arrived, we lived at the San Genaro hotel right across the street from Humpty Dumpty’s wall. Saw here there almost every day. Our daughter was born in the hospital on the hill. So sad to see it all shut down. We never went to the theater you showed but we used to watch drive in movies at Carney Park back in those days. Good times!
We eventually moved to Parco Elena in Lago Patria. It was on Via Stafetta, out in the countryside. When my husband drove to work in the morning in our little Fiat 550, sometimes the road would be blocked with a herd of sheep. The shepherd would move them out of the way if you gave him a cigarette. 😀
Gabe, you just brought back so many memories. Of course I remember Humpty dumpty. Who could forget the "campfire girls". I was stationed at the Naval Hospital at the top of the hill in 70-73. I was a corpsman and worked in OB and Surgery. Had a BSA 750 bike and a Fiat 500 that cost $750 in 1971. Crazy time. Thanks for putting this on RUclips.

Thank you so much for the memories. My daughter was born at the Navy Hospital in April, 1985. I was searching for photos of the exterior of the hospital for a memory book. We lived in Lago Patria from 1982-1985.

Lago Patria! The wild parties I went to there!!
Me too! Daughter born 1972 at that hospital, back in the days when you still got a 3/4 day stay. This is the 1st pic I've ever seen. Blew me away. Thank you
Oh, And loved our 4yrs living in Parco Azzurro, of course!
I was an x-ray technician at the hospital from 1986 through ‘89 .. My daughter was born at the NavHosp , Naples in May of ‘ 86 .
We were stationed there, our son Silas was born in that hospital Oct 15 1998 the best time of my life,it has been 24 yrs and to this day it's still my dream to go back to Naples. Italy.my every day walk it was in that exact same order as the video shows.🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺really great memories!!.
I remember so much about that area - I'd get on the bus and ride the loop from base to base - it was like a free sight tour with great air conditioning and lots of fun. I probably spend 10 hours a week in the racquetball building - what a great place to be. Anyone remember the tennis hotel?
oh yeah, and the Ho Chi Minh trail that connected the 2 places
trainlinezoo yes I was there in 85-89. Great tour!
I was TAD to Naval Hospital Naples in the early/mid 80's and managed to change from the hotel (? the American)I was booked in by the hospital, to the Tennis in a very Neapolitan way .. I went over and talked to the manager, and he gave me a room as long as I (completely unauthorized) agreed to see/examine, but not treat, his cousin regarding some orthopedic related medical issue. I did! Food was not good at the Tennis ... but there was a fantastic ma/pa restaurant not far away which had all the classic Italian dishes. When I didn't drive through the insane traffic in my rented Fiat Panda downtown to get great gelati and espresso.
Old ORION guy. Thanks for the memories..., bout to get a passport and go back. Retired and ready to do some traveling, hopefully if we get past covid. Btw, that white building across from the nsa hdqrts was the hotel I stayed in. Thanks again... Capodichino next
The American Hotel was there when we were there - 1989-1991. I don’t recall it being an office building. My husband was attached to the hospital but worked in Elizia Due (Building Two) near the American Hotel. There was a small restaurant near the American Hotel owned by an American - we used to go in for breakfast and we’d see the Marines jogging down the street - and then they’d play the American and Italian national anthems - at 8:00 am exactly! I remember once the Italians went on strike and blocked Via Scarfoglio - we had to drive down the goat paths behind the hospital to get to the base. Speaking of Humpty Dumpty - someone took her photo and made a Christmas postcard out of it - we still have it! Good memories!
Annette Gross yup! 0800 on the dot!!
Again thanks for the memories. Was stationed NAF Capodacino "70 - '73, lived in Licola, Lago Patria, Ischiatella a Pinetemare... did our shopping at NSA and AFSOUTH, spent some time at the old Hospital with a broken leg
Lived on the Support Site from 2001-2005 as a kid with my dad in the navy. After sports games at Carney Park we would always drive over to Agnano to get Subway and shop. You could always smell the sulfur in the air. Italians on the corner of Eduardo Scarfoglio would always wipe your windshield or sell small tissue packets for change lol. Now the Support Site has everything Agnano had and more!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. We lived there from 88-90 at Pinetamare. When we first got there, we stayed at that American Hotel that is in this video across from the main base.
A definite trip down memory lane. Wow. Lived in Pinetamare Italy '92- '94 and remember the trips to the hospital from the Towers.
The towers at Pinetamare were demolished. There is video on RUclips if you look.
I saw that video, many years after it was demolished. It was sad seeing them go, I lived in Tower 2 in the interconnect. I remember all the fishing boats and the view of the Sea on the other side. I guess all things must end.
A feeling like Wuppertal Memories of a place I´ve never been but know too well. Everything is quite there where I never left.
14 yrs after I left the hospital and Naples. I can still taste the chicken man's chicken and fries. Sometimes the chicken made it home.
Holy cow, talk about a trip down memory lane. Long live "Humpty Dumpty" lol. I stayed at the American Hotel for almost a year waiting for my dad's housing paperwork to get processed back in 1970. Me and my brother went to Forrest Sherman School next to NSA. Spent many a weekend exploring the caves and sulfur pits until we got our villa in Pineta Mare. Carney park was almost a second home being as much time as we spent there. Thanks for the awesome memories.
When I was there it was solely a theater. Was badly damaged in an earthquake.
I was born in that hospital. And this video is the first time I've seen it. Thanks.
The Connolly's what year were u born here?
remember that, live naples italy 90-til aug 93, best 3 years of my life, never forget it
Visit the arcade on base much?
Cy Clennon yea i remember that arcade room they had, also lundery mat, had like 2 aracde games, one i really remember was aliens arcade game
***** Me too. Good stuff.
Thanks for the memories, Gabriel! I lived in the Towers in Pinetamare, 1983-86, and worked at the Naval Hospital 1985-86.
Sherry, what part of the hospital did you work in? Also, in case you don't know, the Pinetamare Towers were blown up and razed.
I was the secretary in the Comptroller's office. I worked with Pepe, Aldo and Joe.

I was there from 94 through 97 humpty dumpy was still there!! Best times of my life at MCSFCO Naples
Apr. 93 through Nov. 94 3rd Herd under Sgt. Dixon.
Lot of memories. I was a young Army Sgt. stationed at NATO two miles away '84-'87. If I had a dime for every time I was at NSA, I'd be rich. BTW, yes, Humpty Dumpty was on that wall daily. A buddy of mine who was an Army photographer got her to pose a cheesecake pose and took a shot. Rumor was that copies of that pic were selling like hotcakes in Bldg O, LOL!
Ty so much for posting this! My daughter was born here in 85 when I was stationed at the Personnel Support Detachment Naples 83-86. She's never really 'seen' where she was born so she will love this! We will visit in the not so distant future. Gracias!
At around the 4:50 mark, you mention that you don't recall what a certain building was. I worked in that building in 1989-1990, and can tell you that (among other things) the Information Services Division was housed there. So was the civilian payroll division, and the Italian bank.
Jimmy Page. That building at the 4:50 mark was the Supply Building. I was stationed there from '82-85. The Supply Officer and his staff had the top floor. I had the 2nd from the top floor which was Inventory Control. 2nd from the top was the Comptroller, and the ground floor had part of disbursing on the left, and security on the right. On the left was the ADP department. Behind the building was ServMart and the Navy Warehouse. Behind on the right was the Navy Exchange warehouse.
Love that you pointed out the theater. Saw a bunch of movies there as a kid, including Jurassic Park when I was 10 ...
Yes We sure remember Humpty Dumpty. ran across a photo of her a few months ago
She is even in Google!
First went there, 1989 worked at the hospital on an AT WITH THE NAVY. WENT BACK ABOUT FOUR OR FIVE TIMES SUBSEQUENTLY. LOVE NAPLES THE AMALFI COAST AFTER THAT SPENT A COUPLE OF ATS IN SICILY SIGONELLA. SOME GREAT TIMES.
Thank you so much for posting this video! I was born in this hospital back in June of 84. My dad and I just watched this video and he says he thinks he knows you- LT. Chris Simmon. My dad worked in the general floor/ICU and my mom LT Mary Simmon, worked on the male floor. The years they spend there were 82-85. Again, thank you so much for posting this :)
OMGSH!!!! This has got to be the coolest connection I've made yet through the making of this video! I knew you when you were just a teeny little thing, just born! I remember your mom and dad! You need to tell them that I STILL have a picture of them on the hover boat to Capri and they're wearing mine and Karl Schriever's New Wave B-52's glasses. I also have a picture...I'm almost sure it's them dressed up as Rock Lobsters for a wild party we were all at one time! Are you all on Facebook? If so look me up! facebook.com/gespino
My dad was stationed here from 2000-2003 and I remember living in Grigicnano during that time. The bus ride from base to the hospital was one fo the wrost!
WOW! Thanks for the memories. We were there 1975-early 77. Remember also Tonys Chinese Restaurant across the street. And the old spa hotel just behind the wall HD sat upon. We also lived in Parco Azzurro.
I was there '84-early '86 and have a lot of good memories from that time. I survived a lot of the little earthquakes that slowly destroyed the buildings. I can't believe that it's been 30 years since I arrived there...and I was SO young. It was great to walk through Agnano again!
Oh wow, Gabe. Thank you so so much for this gem of a video. I rotated to Naval Hospital Naples in the '81-83 timeframe from permanent duty in Spain. I was the USN Kids dentist permanently stationed in Rota, Spain but because there were just a couple of kids dental specialists in the entire USNavy, Naples would "borrow" me for a couple of weeks about twice each year. (I was also loaned out a couple of times to the clinic serving the embassy folks in LIsbon, Portugal). Boy, what memories this brings back up. I was so so young (only 25 at the time) and truly wish I had more of an appreciation of just how incredible and special that opportunity was. I kind of dd, but looking back, I had no idea what a magical time it was. Thanks so much!

Joel you probably worked on my teeth 😂
wow! How fun - was there at Elementary school when the horseshoe building was first open our 2nd year of 4 in Naples ('69-'73) The building across the way was an extended office building that was used for extra classes since we didn't all fit in the horseshoe building. Yes, we used to play kickball on the roof, but then moved to the open field that was one the side of the building. Have one of the few pics of Humpty dumpty on the wall before she 'retired'. Good video, thanks!

I was stationed at the Naval Hospital from 1979-1982 and this video brought back so many memories. It is fabulous. I have always wondered what it looks like today and you have given me that gift. Thank you
Linda Zavodny what part of the hospital? I had just gotten there November 1981.
This is cool. I was at the Hospital Nov 1996-Nov 1998. Great place. Worked on L&D floor.
My son was born in 1997, you might have helped deliver him!!
I was stationed there from 89-93. The old NSA hardly looks the same. Squeeze alley, remember it well. My barracks was located at Capo. I just saw a RUclips video of it. I didn't even recognize it. Seeing some of the other videos, I saw the Pinetamare Towers had come down. Anybody remembers Fontana Blue, the motel in Pinetamare? I had a blast at NSA and met some great friends. I wish I could remember the names and how to contact them.
My husband was stationed at the NAS Hospital from August 1989 through November 1991. I remember Via Scarfoglio very well. The pink building that you said was the theater was not a theater - I believe it was a gymnasium. The theater that we went to was on the NATO base - no theater on NAS. There was also a library next to the gym, and a bank near there too. The area near the Exchange housed a frame shop, video store, and a Wendy's (we wouldn't eat at a Wendy's for years when we got back to the States)! Also towards the end of the base was a bookstore and the laundromat. The American Hotel was already there in 1989 (not sure when you were stationed there). It had a cafe on the ground floor where we used to get breakfast - owned by an American (of course)! I remember sitting there early in the morning watching the Marines running by. Then everything would stop and they'd first play the Italian national anthem, and then the American national anthem - you could hear it in the street! Even though my husband was attached to the hospital, he worked in Elizia Due (2) which was right near the American Hotel. I do remember climbing that steep hill up to the hospital! I also remember that often the Italians would go on strike and we couldn't get through The Squeeze - we had to drive down to Via Scarfolgio via a goat path behind the hospital! We were there during Desert Storm - they posted Marines on the tops of the NAS buildings with trained machine guns - we couldn't park close to the buildings on the base and our cars were frequently checked for bombs. They posted Marine guards at the high school too. Thanks for sharing this video - brings back many memories!
Annette Gross Hi Annette, I was stationed at the hospital in the early 80’s and at that time the pink building was the NSA theater. I remember it was damaged during an earthquake and I vaguely remember it being closed after the damage and due to the damage. Based on what you’ve written it was apparently repaired and re-opened as a gym. I too remember the old goat path!! Unfortunately Google Street View does not document goat paths!! There was no Wendys back then. The closest fast food was a McDonalds in Munich.
Thank you for clarifying!
@@GabrielEspinosa7 Yes, exactly correct. The theater, made of large slabs of marble, was damaged and closed by that earthquake. Most folks may not recall this, but the NSA building was cracked top to bottom by the quake on the side facing Campi Flegrei (Solfatara).
I lived in gricignano from 2000-2003. As a kid we used to go to agnano to hangout at the Wendy’s while our parents did their shopping. I distinctly remember the fries that were served hot in yellow Wendy’s cups, and they had delicious gyros also. There used to be a bookstore too where I loved reading the magazines.
I was there 81-85 and at that time the closest American junk food restaurant was McDonald’s in Munich Germany.
I travel a great deal and that was the best trip I've taken in 35 years. So much joy surrounding my time in Naples. Oh for simpler times. Thank you for that.
Thank you for sharing. This brought tears to my eyes as so many memories flooded back. I was stationed at NATO HQ for three years, stayed one more year as a civilian and my daughter was born in the NSA Hospital January 1994. So many fond memories and Italian friends that I was blessed to meet.
Yup - it was an emotional roller coaster making the video.
Thanks so much for the memories!! I loved Naples, Amalfi Coast, etc...I plan to retire there in a few years...as soon as I figure out how to get my VA meds there!! Lol
I just went back last year and silly or not, I couldn’t remember all of the mountains & the mega tunnels. I rented a car and went around for about five months and it was just absolutely phenomenal. I met with some people I used to work with & old landlords... I wish I could live there forever as well; but, I could never wake up & deal with the daily hustle of getting my groceries, etc. Napoli will forever live in my heart! It’s unlike any other place I’ve ever been on earth.
I was there 1985-87. Worked as a DP for CTF 67 (FHLT) on the sixth floor of the security bldg. I stayed in the American Hotel before I was assigned to the barracks at Capo. I then moved to the Marine Barracks so I didn't have to ride the bus to work every morning. I remember Humpty Dumpty on the wall and behind it was a scrubby area of trees called rubber alley. Didn't she run the Campfire Girls next to the race track? Also does anyone remember Mama's Tratoria? It was close to the American Hotel and we ate there a lot. Anybody remember the flag man? I bought a flag with Humpty Dumpty on it that I've had framed. Anyway lots of crazy fun memories! Thanks for posting!
Ahh... memories. I was assigned from London to NSA in '90 - '91 as a recalled reservist during Desert Storm. The building just before the American Hotel was the Hideaway Hotel. I stayed there for seven months courtesy of Uncle. I bet they made a fortune that year. Roadkill Chicken. Cars with newspapers plastered inside all the windows. The 'girl' who stood on the corner by the bonfire.
I arrived the same time as you. This video took me back. Great times!
Was stationed there in 1981 at the hospital. With what the VA is putting me through now it is coming back in extreme detail. Can even tell you what the interior looked like in some buildings. Took me 10 years to forget it, they brought it all back in 8 months. Even remember the Italian base over the hill.
Hey Thanks for the memories I lived here in 1981 to 83. Pinetamare was my stomping ground. I used to play Shamballah by the Police in the Juke Box at that Navy Exchange everytime i was in there. I had a Breakdance crew at Forest Sherman called Street Patrol. I really miss this place.
What’s your name? I was there from 81-85 and though I was a sailor, i was young and had many friends amongst the high school crowd. If you don’t know, Pinetamare was demolished via explosive charges. There are videos on RUclips.
@@GabrielEspinosa7 Hicks my father was Shore Patrol and I saw the video of the Towers being demolished. I watch videos of Pinetamare all the time its a ghost town. I still want to go back there.
@@jyoshyo yes, as soon as we retire, I plan to take my wife on a trip to Italy and Europe in general. We WILL be stopping at all the old places from when I was stationed there. It will be a bittersweet experience I think, but something I want to do.
@@GabrielEspinosa7 there should be a Pinetamare reunion. Anybody who lived there before the Towers went down should attend. I had a crew of friends i want to catch up. Do you remember the death of Greg Long at the Elementary School? I have 8million stories i can write a book.
I I never lived there I just drank there I lived in Parco Paradiso which was near the Cuma caves. I don’t remember the kid who you mentioned dying. What happened and when?
Thanks, brought back some fine memories. Our US Navy trips to NSA Agnano (COMFAIRMED) began about 1985 through 1995 and beyond... including several months during the Gulf War (Operation Desert Shield/Storm). Several places in the vicinity are both historic and beautiful. We typically stayed at the Hideaway Hotel... now a senior citizen home I think (opposite the NSA main gate) or the American Hotel cited in video. Some nice area eating establishments. But also remembered is the negative garbage problem there in Greater Naples... Italian local government has little concept of recycling or what we might view as acceptable refuge collection methods & practice. At times a very dirty place... narrator comment "Once a dump--always a dump" -- so true except for the year leading up to World Cup 1990... when the world soccer fans visited Naples ... very significant effort to clean up the place.
Who, in their right mind, could EVER forget "Squeeze Alley!" LOLOLOL
or ''chicken alley''
500 lire for tagenziale
yes that was the theater and next to it was the "Happy Horseshoe" middle school when I went there in 76. Across the street from the main gate was the American Hotel which my family stayed upon arrival to Naples in 76 and we also stayed there when we rotated out in 79. The High School was actually in the city of Naples. Parco Azzurro is where we lived for our 3 years. I spent a week in the hospital on the hill when I got hit by a car while riding my motorcycle.
The first day in Naples I recall looking out the window of the American Hotel (in somewhat of a culture shock state) to see this guy walking a bore pig up the road in the direction of the hospital. The pig had to be 600 lbs. and he steered it with a switch from a tree. That sight and a grown man taking a piss at the toll gate of the tang just before the tunnel. Barbarians.
We stayed at that hotel in 1978 when we were leaving to come back to the states... wasn't it named "The Hideaway" then?
There's only 1 person I remember getting hit on a motorcycle from Parco azzurro during that timeframe... Chris Scow... is that you?
My family moved to Naples in early 1980. I was a little over halfway through tenth grade. We stayed in the American Hotel for a while until we moved to Parco Azzuro. I had enough credits to graduate from high school in three years, so I graduated in May of 1981 from Forrest Sherman High School, which was later renamed to Naples American High School. It also moved down to the "Happy Horseshoe" (at NSA), or whatever it was called, soon after I graduated. I went at the Via Manzoni location. After that I went to the University of Maryland, Munich Campus for three semesters, and next I took U of M extension center classes back at Naples at NSA. I went back to the States some time around May of 1983. We were in Brussels before Naples, so I hadn't been back to the States in six years continuously. I had to learn how to drive at age 18 1/2 at an American High School in Illinois. The NSA area looks very different in your video from how it looked when I was there.
Indoor and Outdoor Endurance much has changed but the buildings are still there. It’s sad to look at. We all had the greatest time of our lives in Naples.
Gabriel Espinosa Yes, Wow, and Thanks for Writing Me Back: Right after we moved to Naples and we were still in the American Hotel, one day I was walking over from the NSA area to AFSouth. I walked by Humpty Dumpty, and she called over to me from the other side of the street. She yelled out, "Hey, Mister, you want a blow job?" I walked on without answering. My mind was surprised, and overall, I really didn't comprehend what happened, if you know what I mean. I was only 15. I also remember Italians calling out into the base from outside the first gate that is closest to the Tangenziale. I heard "Hey Joe." Really though, as young dependents we (I think a lot of us) hitchhiked everywhere, and sometimes I caught rides with Italians. I worked summer hire full-time (40 hours per week) and got paid a dollar less than minimum wage. I worked with Italian nationals and other dependents. Depending on the job I had, I also had varying amounts of Navy personnel on the scene too. I worked three summers in a row in Naples, including two after my high school graduation. The weather was really good there. I've never been back, and of course I've thought about Naples. I realize it would be very changed. Of course I would have lived a more perfect life if I could do things differently. We had a lot of problems among the dependents with the drug culture there, unfortunately. This is characteristic of the local environment to a substantial extent, I think. In reading over all of the comments to this video, I was really surprised and touched by all the different time ranges and warm volunteering of personal information. The overseas military community really brings people together in a unique and patriotic way. I haven't found that over here in the States. People can be amazingly important! Naples would be nothing like it was without the other Americans there. I never served, but I wanted to. Happy Late Wednesday (U.S. Central Time), John
@@indoorandoutdoorendurance3889 Parco Azzuro is where EVERYBODY went trick-or-treating while I was there... '76-'78...
@@mattbirchfield2740 Right On, Very Interesting: That was probably pretty amazing and fun!
The Hideaway was the hotel directly beside the American hotel....both of which were across from the "Marine entrance" to NSA. The Tennis Hotel was up on the hill behind Solfatara. During our two tours there, we actually stayed in all three of those places at some point: the Hideaway when we arrived in '77 (so I've been told), the Tennis when we left in '80, the American when we came back in '83 and at Fontana Blu in Pinetamare when we finally left in '90.
This is so amazing! I was stationed there from 90 to 94. I worked on NSA in the Comptroller Building (4:53) on the 1st floor in ISD (Information Systems Dept.) as a DP. They totally remodeled NSA Capodichino and made that the main base. So many memories there! My two oldest were born in that hospital. Anybody remember Bagnoli Joe's Pizza.
i do. i know that guy, i used to run there during the lunch break, i was a dt3
and even that road that led to the 'tennis hotel'. there was a salumeria, where i got a piece of bread, cut in half, with mortadella and mozzarella di bufala
I ate there all the time 78-80. I loved the pizza. It was also the first time I ver had fried calamari.
derek lee eskelson I'm curious what it costs to take the tange now? It was 500 lira when I was there. We used to call the path next to NSA the Ho Chi Min trail, curious if that's still there.
***** yep, i remeber the 500 lira tange. in 2001, when the euro head honchos decided to change our currency, prices doubled. now it costs 1.20 euro (a little more than 1.20 $). i donno about the ho chi min... that led all the way to the big 'tennis hotel', if i don't mistake. i used it back in 1981, my father was in the usn too, and stayed there for a while. ooh-rah.
Great job on this video. I lived in Naples and went to the Horseshoe school on the base. It was just the Elementary school back then. We used to have recess on the roof! Made the kickball games interesting :) I made a few trips to the hospital and remember the dentist was in the same building as the hospital.
You played kickball on the roof? We got up there one time and my teachers (Mr. Yakopin and Ms. Murray) caught us coming down... for some reason they turned a blind eye!
As I recall the theatre building was a church on Sundays and a theater during the week. When my dad was stationed there from 1971 to 1974 I attended Forrest-Sherman elementary school right next door. I remember the old Hideaway Hotel as that was where we stayed for a week before we returned stateside. Thank you for sharing this!
I was stationed there at Navcams Med which is on the Nato base n Bagnoli from 80-82. Best days of my life!😊 Anybody remember Bagnoli Joe's? Great pizza! I miss "Bella Napoli". Ciao! 😎
I was in the hospital for a night, my first car accident, only stitches. Stayed in the Hideaway for a month or so. Good times .... 70' s
I worked Telephone/Autovon maintenance here '83 to '86. Our oldest two kids were born in that hospital.
I was stationed at the NATO base (AF South) from '78 to '80. I was a Proto Mole. I do remember taking the walk down to the Exchange and having to avoid Humpty Dumpty. Good times.
Have you seen recent pictures of Proto? The place is quite literally falling apart, and it's still filled with old Delta Systems computer terminals and other funky stufff
I was there 1968 through 1972. Sure is a lot more 'built up' than it used to be. The old, gray building around 5:30 used to be either the American Hotel, or the Hideaway Hotel. Those were pretty much the only two buildings in that area besides the auto scrap yard (which still seems to be there!) The red building on base was the "chapel theater". Showed movies during the week and worship on Sundays. That was the new elementary school "Forrest Sherman Elem." The high school was still on the hill when I was there (Via Manzoni?) The NSA Admin building had a snackbar in the basement on one end, with the 'steak house' on the other end.
I enjoyed the trip. Thank you!
Spent many an hour in that snack bar... My Dad was OIC of MOTU 6 upstairs in that building from 76-78, and I usually walked over there after school. Wasn't allowed to go all the way down to the Crater House or pinball room.
I couldn't remember the actual name of the school... Forrest Sherman... Thanks Willum!
I was stationed with the NSGA, 5th Floor of the NSA BLDG from Nov 80 to 82 after ELINT school at NTTC Corry Sta, P'cola, FL. This video is awesome; brings back really, really great memories! That large building to the left of the 'Marine' Main Gate (across street from American Hotel) was the base theater. Within a day of my arrival the great 'terremotto' of November 1980 occurred while I was in that theater. Bounced me into the row of seats in front of where I had been sitting. The NCO club was ground floor of the left barracks wing; Marines in the middle floors bottom, Navy and Marine ladies top two floors and us NSGA guys were on the third floor of the right wing. I recall Capt. Jimmy Lee was the NSGA CO. I was re-upped for 4 more by CINCUSNAVEUR, and before departing to NSGA Winter Harbor I hit the command bell with a champagne cork, first one in command history to do so. Played soccer at AFSOUTH with the Greek-Italian NATO Team. Match against the Turks ended in a riot on the field.
OMG! Humpty Dumpty? Someone actually remembered? :D
My dad was stationed in Naples. Mom worked at the hospital. WOW what a change...
At 07:36, you spot the old horseshoe school. That was Forrest Sherman Elementary School. Back in 1969-1974, if you faced the building, there used to be a farm to the left. Across the street, heading towards the hospital, there used to be boutiques that sold onyx, alabaster, ivory, etc.
Thanks for putting this together. OMG I miss it.
How could anyone forget Humpty Dumpty! I miss it terribly also.
Gabriel Espinosa For awhile she had competition from a transvestite around the corner. We called him Pozzouli Pete
Dale Wilkins and what happened????
I heard a newly-arrived marine was serviced by Pozzuoli Pete, instead of Humpty Dumpty, much to his chagrin...
I was a nurse stationed at the Naval hospital 72-74--met my husband while there, he used to play in a band there at the Flamingo Club. Did a lot of diving in the bay--It was a great time.
I was TAD to Naval Hospital Naples (as an orthopedic surgeon at Charleston Naval Hospital) in the mid 1980's for 6 weeks.. your trip is most appreciated, Gabriel. ..
Looked this up after a trip down memory lane based on a TV program including the Campi Flegrei which wasn't far away toward the west. Also could find the Hotel Tennis Agnano where I was lodging and walked to the Naval Hosptial through a small vineyard and a short path.
I went up there off the USS Saratoga in '84, went to the Exchange and there was a guy there selling Fisher CD player stereos, the guy said "it was the thing of the future". I think I told him "ah bullshit".
Wow, that brought back may memories. My husband was a Sea Bee and we were stationed there from 1987 to 1989. I remember staying there in the hotel across from the main gate in front of the marine barracks until we moved into base housing in Pinatamare. We spent time at Carney Park and we remember Humpty Dumpy. lol I remember walking down the end of the road and we would buy the "Gia roasted Polo" {chicken} from the guy that was cooking them his rotisserie. The Poliza walking around. My husband and I had only been married 7 month when we got there and I couldn't wait to get back state side, and now I would give anything to go back. Thank you for the memories.
+Lonna Lachner The Pinatamare Towers were demolished.
We called 'em those "road chickens" --- that were purchased from the roadside vendor ("Chicken Charlie" I think) about a mile down Via Edwardo Scarfolo near "squeeze alley" ... roast chickens were just GREAT!
I dream about those roadside chickens 28 years later.
I have not spoken with anyone who doesn't!!
"Road Chicken" -- a/k/a was a favorite with my unit during our many mid 1980s-to- mid 1990s visits to NSA Naples (Agano). The hotel directly across from the main gate was "The Hideaway Hotel" -- looks like its now been converted to senior citizen housing. The American Hotel, just up the street a bit, seems to remain open.
Our 1st born daughter was born in that hospital in 1974 sept. My husband was a Marine at the Marine Barracks and also broke his leg before our daughter was born while playing Baseball at the park... The ride in the ambulance was absolutely horrible. He had a plastic thing on his leg that wasn't blown up all the way and every speed bump he screamed in pain... He was playing 2nd Base and they guy in the field ran into him and broke all kinds of bones in his face they flew him out to Germany I believe. Oh yes and my doc who delivered our daughter had a Paisley Print cap on and it was really wild yellow and purple and the sign above my head read "DO NOT TURN MORE THAN 180* DEGREES.... I sure miss that place....thanks for the memories..
When we were there in the mid 1960s there was hardly anythong there. the exchange and commisary were rather new. We always passed Humpty Dumpty and the sailors would save boxes for her to burn to keep warm. I went top the elementary school on Manzoni. Wow, I'd love to go back. Thanx for posting !
Thank you for this video. My dad was stationed here from 69-72. My brother and I were born in the hospital. My parents would tell us stories about living in the apartments off base and of the Flamingo club bowling alley on base. I am still in touch with some of their old friends who I lovingly call auntie and Uncle.
snbcsinger my dad was with NSA. Next to the new school. We lived there from 1968-1972. Dad was with Naval intel. I was in elementary and a bit of jr.high. We used to live in Parco San Palo. Up the street from the soccer stadium.
Aloha
I was there from 82 to 84 Marine Barracks Lcpl England, Darren.
Darren England we were there at the same time then.
Thanks for the tour. I live in Agnano now and it's interesting to see what used to be here. I am amazed the hospital is still around- it was falling apart 20 years ago. I wish you remembered what a few more of the buildings were, though ;)
I worked in the hospital from 95-98. The scuttlebutt was that we couldn't put patients above the 2nd floor because it was labelled "structurally unsound." Naval Hospital Naples was pictured in an episode of JAG. Suffice to say, it was NOT filmed on location.
Wow, what memories. Thanks for posting. I remember staying at the American Hotel for about 3 weeks in the summer of 86 before our departure. My father was the XO of the hospital from 83-86 -- Paul Knight. One day I will return.
I remember your father well! How is he?
Sadly, my father passed away in 1998, but he always looked on his time in Naples as a career highlight & one where he formed a lot of really meaningful friendships. It is so great that you remember him. Did you work at the hospital with him?
Yes, I was the Pediatric Corpsman while he was there.

I think there were 2 hotels side by side: the American hotel and the Hideaway hotel..i used to stay in this one with my parents
Thanks for the virtual trip. I was stationed at the NATO base (AIRSOUTH) in the late 70's, I remember this well, It looks pretty sad now. I have great memories of living in Naples, will always remember it. Would like to go back some day.

Was at the Naval Hospital from August 1979 until August 1982 and it was the time of my life.
Love your video, lived in Agnano for almost 9 years...still have family and friends there.
We were stationed there from 1977-1980. The public works building is at mark 5:21-5:26 and the pink building from mark 6:27 - 7:04 was the theater / chapel until they built a church building across the street in 1979. Along with Humpty Dumpty, she used to have competition from 'hatchet face Mary'. I attended the old Forrest Sherman HS on via Manzoni. Used to visit friends in Pinetamare, which now has been renamed Villagio Coppola, after Vincenzo Coppola - the Gomorrah boss that developed that property. It is now a ghost town, having been abandoned some years back. Thank you for posting this video. I too, walked those caves in Solfatara with friends after taking the number '7' bus from school to the base. Mille Grazie!
Memories! I attended NAHS and spent a lot of my teenage years between it and the base. Thanks for the interesting view of a place and time I remember so differently.
WOW... Thank you for making this video... we were stationed in Naples and lived at Pinetamare 1978-1980... First child was born in that very hospital.... and yes, I do remember Humpty Dumpty....
I was in the Army working in the fleet center (proto) I new a David Nentwick, any relation? Jim Gustafson. From 75-78.
