My father was a French officer, Promotion Laperrine, Saint-Cyr 1958. He served first as an observer (spotter?) in the ALAT (French Army Light Aviation) from Cesna Bird Dog for observation and reconnaissance (I would have like to get his eagle's eyes😜...) And he was quickly sent to the Foreign Legion, at the 1er REP (1st Foreign Parachute Regiment), embeded with them as observer for Close Air Support and Artillery fire. I think the American call this mission today a "JTAC". Embeded with them in their helicopter's raids in the djebel or dropped from planes. He was used to tell me that many warrant officers in this regiment were German. And never stopped to fight since... 1936 in Spain! Imagine these guys. Spain, France, Russia, and then Indochina and Algeria... Almost 30 years of war. They were very respected.
That's awesome @brunodn9702! As a combat paratrooper, I hold these guys as heroes! Yeah, we call them JTAC (Airforce) but also referred to as a Foward Observer (Army). These guys are detrimental to combat success. I appreciate you stopping by and sharing your story.
@@jointbasepodcast ALAT is a part of the French Army. So Foward Observer. And for the people from my father's generation, the heroes, the guys they loocked for to gain their experience, were the US Paratroopers (Their legendary epic in Normandy 1944). The planes they used during this time, in Algeria, was the Nord Noratlas. Their first airmobile combat with H21 "Banane Volante" (Flying Banana like in US) and Sikorsky S.58/H 34 (with door shooting old German Mauser 20mm gun, nicknamed "Pirate". ) Piasecki-Vertol H21 : ruclips.net/video/fsIWRA6cbVM/видео.html Sikorsky S.58/H34 "Pirate" : ruclips.net/video/z_5yeNcFqVk/видео.html
To answer your questions: 1) in the last video, there are two exceptions a French citizen be in the legion. The first is an officer from the regular French army or fresh from the French military academy to serve as their officer (lieutenant). The more common way is changing their identity. Because the legion was created to avoid spilling French blood, a French national MUST change their name and their nationality. The most common is pretending to be from a French speaking country such as Canada, Switzerland , or Belgium to name a few. 2) A legionnaire has a 5 year contract. After the 5 years, they can either leave and return to civilian life or reenlist for another 5 years. They can serve a maximum of 20 years depending on the circumstances.
@AJKam1kaz3 I appreciate the insight that is fascinating! I'm assuming they still go through the same selection proces? What a genius way not to spill "French" blood. Thank you for clarifying all my questions. I appreciate it.
Hey brother, I appreciate the donation! It helps me to keep making these videos! This was the first video I posted, but I plan to do more legionnaire reactions. Thanks again!
Hey brother, I appreciate you watching! This was my first video, and to be honest, I didn't do the legion justice. I'll be doing more reactions soon. Thanks for watching! 🇫🇷

fake : French know where the legions intervene as the others army regiment ; but the best paratroopers regiment is th 2 th REP ! count the number of people killed ; you can find the statictics by the french army ; legion is not more committed than the other Corp.
Since its creation in 1831, until the end of the Algerian War, 36,000 legionnaires died in combat, or 275 deaths per year, which is enormous. If an intervention for French interests must be carried out, and it represents risks of high losses, without air or ground support, without means of recovering the unit in the event of hard blows and heavy losses, then it will be the legion that will be sent. This was the case in Kolwesi (Zaire) in 1978, when the paratroopers of the 2nd REP legion jumped at low altitude (250m) in contact with the rebels, being shot at the end of their parachute, to save hostages from a mass massacre that had begun. After sometimes violent fighting, they liberated the city by saving thousands of hostages. Result: 250 rebels killed, 5 legionnaires killed in combat. It was not the 2nd REP that was on alert, but the paratroopers of the regular 8th RPIma. Given the unknowns about the exact number of rebels (4000 estimated, maybe more) without air or ground support and without means of recovery, it was the 2nd REP that was chosen. to avoid making public opinion "cough"......just in case. That said, this does not take away the certain value of the regular paratroopers.
