From a lifelong cyclist, this is a lovely well-reasoned review that's relevant to real people and is incredibly practical, and it's nice to hear someone say, yeah 1,000 quid on a bike, that's expensive!
Halfords servicing can be hit and miss. That chain being too long, is the result of a rush job, it won't damage anything but it's not safe, that lack of tension could mean the chain jumps off the front chainrings. Buying a rim brake today, there might not be as much innovation, but what you're getting here is still an amazing bike for the money.
I got serious about riding on an aluminum boardman comp years ago, and Chris Boardman himself, even said that bike was faster, stiffer and more comfortable than what he was winning races on back in his day.

Yes, these days £1000 would get an entry level bike but with the SLR 8.9 you get some of the mid range bike benefits for that price but it's really not that expensive in comparison to the competition for similar specs but I have noticed lately that some of the big brands are doing some major discounts on their RRP prices to shift older stock versions but personally I wouldn't want to spend £2 grand plus on a bike,it would not make the wife happy either but some pretty good deals on the used market exist

@@checkthefacts. If you went with a Specialised, Canyon or Ribble carbon road bike you've definitely be spending well over £1 so the Boardman 8.9 naturally doesn't have much competition apart from Decathlon.

I have this bike full of my dad's old upgrades. Hunt 36 carbons, campag chainset, upgraded stem and bars and it's 8.1kg I think or 7.9. I just hate the brakes as it was designed for long reach brakes 57mm so it cannot accommodate regular brakes like 105. The tektro are terrible but the ones I put aren't much better either

That's interesting to hear, I thought the brakes on this bike were great.

Decent bike, dad bought one from Halfords on Boxing Day for £665 when on offer. Great value

My slr 8.9 doesn't have any chain rub, your service was definitely sus. I use a Boardman gravel bike for daily commuting and poping into town and mixed road trail cycling but the slr 8.9 for longer leisure rides ,the longest 100miles,plus I have done several hill climb competitions, sportatives, and a time trial which the bike proved perfectly adaptable to😊

Today I sprayed the chain on the Boardman 8.9 with chain cleaner and that has helped a lot.

Halfords is Rubbish they ruin all bikes where I live any way I took mine to another bike shop there was 2 extra links on the chain and other parts wasn’t even tighten up I did buy it from halfirds

After filming this review, I sprayed the chain with chain cleaner and that made a big improvement.

I've owned one of these for 6 months and my summary is - don't buy it . I've been riding road bikes for 30 years but these wheels are awful.
The wheels are designed for tubeless and so trying to fit a tyre is much more difficult than previously experienced. It took 45 mins to change a tube out one cold night after a puncture and since then I've tried umpteen different tyres and even fitted a TPU but no better. I have had to replace the wheels at significant cost.
The gearing is not right either, the shifting simply isn't very smooth for a 105 system, something I noticed coming out of the bike shop. I have since setup the rear derailleur myself but it's still not right. My other 2 road bikes are 10 speed and I have setup the gearing for perfect switching so its almost certainly a poor chain line - basic engineer fault.
It's supposed to be an endurance frame but it's not and for a full carbon bike it's a pretty harsh and uncomfortable ride.
My aluminium framed Merida Scultura costing £800 ( weight 9.7kg) is a much smoother and all round better bike with decent wheels and perfect switching.
The bike has a decent spec ( exc wheels) but doesn't seem to be engineered into the frame leaving the ride unrefined. It should be a better bike.
My tip : if you want a new bike at a similar price, purchase a Giant Contend SL. It's an aluminium frame but smooth and lightweight.

Those are interesting thoughts. I am sure people watching may find this comment helpful. I did indeed find replacing the inner tubes to be very difficult so that explains why!

I think £1200 is still very good value for what you are getting with this bike, Shimano 105s, carbon frame, same geometry as the more expensive flagship SLRs. To get anything like this spec with different manufacturers you'd be talking £1500 at least as a starting price!

Correct, compared to the rest of the industry is it good value.

You should do a YT regarding the chain run, show people where it’s contacting. I bet they could tell you what the issue is

Take that back to halfords over the chain rub that is definitely sus and maybe damaging the frame. If not you will probably get close to what you paid back

Sort your gears out to stop the chain rubbing, it’s not hard

Stop ya moaning lad.:) A price increase of only £50 quid in the current financial climate is excellent. You must be trolling? Surely you can't be serious? 😂

I want to see more competition with budget carbon bikes, Decathlon look like they're doing well in the market.
