Hurricane Michael rapidly intensified into a Cat 5. I don't remember if it was 24 hours, but it was close to that; it was never expected to get that strong. But it had upper level troughs helpling it grow, and it skirted between Mexico and Cuba without really making landfall so by the time it hit Florida, it had only been passing over very warm water.
honestly...wouldn't rule it out. It'll have a full day of lower shear tomorrow. Nothing stopping it from growing stronger, especially if it avoids direct impact with some of the more mountainous islands.
