I could be wrong, but I think i remember watching or reading that the Steelers had identified a wrinkle in the Bengals coverages where that dump off the the back over the middle was going to be open a lot, so I think Russ was just looking for that as part of the game plan

    • @dkmi
      @dkmi 24 дня назад

@@NativeBlackAmericanTv Romo doesn't have time to do this kind of analysis during a broadcast. There's a lot more mentioned here by Warner than the checkdown to the middle. There are all sorts of things he points out that make no sense. Wilson not even looking to the right side of the field considering the coverage. Wilson giving up on a play before it even starts and he's ready to take off without any pressure on him. Warner also mentions about the checkdown that "maybe that's what he's being told" at 20:25. He isn't discounting that idea at all. He just looks at the plays and wonders why he's not even looking. And while he refuses to hit the plays he should most of the time, he rips those throws others. Warner knows what he's talking about. He checked down a RB to the left before the WRs were even out of their routes. Then he's throwing a bullet through a seam. Beautiful passes. It's the inconsistency in when he takes those throws and when he bails on them.

I was here to comment the exact same thing. Steelers found a weakness in the middle and they kept exploiting all game.... So this was done by purpose not because Russ didn't understand what he saw.

Kurt Warner played with Marshall Faulk, Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt, and left tackle Orlando Pace on the "Greatest show on Turf". 3 of those 4 player I mentioned are in the Hall of Fame. Who has Russ played with on offense that are HOFers? Maybe 2, Marshawn Lynch and Jimmy Graham but they are both not certified definent locks although I think Marshawn will get in at least and Russ didn't play with them on the same teams and both of them Russ only had for 3 out of his 10 seasons on Seattle. Kurt also in his amazing 2001 "Greatest show on Turf" year threw 36 touchdowns and 22 interceptions with 3 other HOFers on the offense. Russ has thrown in a season with 0 HOFers on offense but himself (2020) threw 40 touchdowns. Russ has also never come close to throwing 22 picks in a season. Russ is not a question for the HOF like you just tried saying he is, Russ is a certified 1st ballot HOF lock from just his Seahawks career alone and he is still playing so he could make it even more of a lock. Kurt Warner most definitely would not have won 5-6 rings with that Seahawks team, he would have won 0. The amount of glaze I just witnessed from you is actually a joke.

I want everyone to pay attention to the difference between Warner's analysis of Wilson at 2:07, and his analysis of a very similar play executed by Jared Goff and the Lions in different circumstances at ruclips.net/video/9e5FxbdhP54/видео.htmlfeature=shared&t=193
Russ (25 yard gain on 3rd and 2): "But you see, Russ is already throwing it to his check down right here....this is the Russell Wilson that I saw the last couple years in Denver, the Russell Wilson that would almost not see anything down the field"
Goff (19 yard gain on 3rd and 26): "But you see, Jared Goff is already throwing this football, and that's what I love, is, he knows exactly where his eyes need to go......boom, hook defender gets depth, I'm just going to dump it off and get a positive play and we're going to rock and roll"
So when Russ takes the virtually guaranteed completion for a first down and much more on 3rd and 2, Kurt is talking about how he isn't seeing anything down the field, but when Goff checks it down on 3rd and 26 in a situation where the defense is happy to give him that check down, it's "that's what I love" and "we're going to rock and roll".....i.e. punt lol.

Russell gets criticized for holding onto the ball a lot, so I can't criticize him being quick to a checkdown with as many YAC that he got vs the Bengals. The defense crept up in the second half to take away the checkdowns, which led to more deep shots. What seems like a missed read to some looks like strategy to me. Almost as if he's setting up bigger plays later on. It explains why he turns over the ball less than a lot of traditional quarterbacks. Will he check down, scramble, take a deep shot, throw over the middle? Who knows. As a short QB it makes him less predictable. Russell is an instinctual player.

I also think Russ is very good pre-snap. So he knows where he's going based on the coverage and gets the ball out quickly. He makes a lot of audibles at the line based on what he sees pre-snap. I kinda wish he lowered the shoulder there rather than cut laterally. But either way I'll take it vs a 7-yard out to Pickens going out of bounds.

Because of not having much Shotgun Play Action installed for Fields, the Steelers also found something of the same approach early in the season with their Under Center Play Action. He was an athletic quarterback who could scramble and extend the play. In his prime, his scrambling ability was parallel to Fran Tarkenton . The TD pass to Pat was a prime example..

Haha - there is no doubt I do, but don’t you think the plays are designed for a purpose? And he also did something different on the same plays at different times? I get that the results are most important thing, but am I not allowed to to ask why? Or to analyze it bc there are guys open and may have been more success reading the play more conventionally! I want to learn and help give others something to look for… but it’s ok as a fan to just want results, I’m not mad at that!

@@kurtwarnerqbc I'm not saying that you can't ask why, I just think the implication that he can't or isn't reading the defense is weird just because he is immediately getting to a high percentage throw. You can't go broke taking a profit, and barring down and distance considerations, a quick throw to an uncovered back is always a great choice.
As far as the progression goes, if they aren't covering one of your players, you would just throw them ball, right? If you went into a game and you knew that the defense was not going to cover Marshall Faulk, the progression wouldn't really matter would it? Faulk would end the day with 11 catches and 120 yards(100 yards of RAC).
If he were only hitting checkdowns , or forcing it to covered checkdowns that would be bad. In this game specifically he targeted every section of the field. Overall I think he was very aggressive, when you sprinkle in those quick throws to the back it seems like it would really put the linebackers in a bind.
I say this all respectfully, I appreciate your content and career.

I dont think we can sit here in good faith and question someone's processing, when theres 16 people ever to walk this earth who have thrown for more yards than him. And 11 who've thrown for more TDs. He was in complete control at the line, he knew exactly what play to get into. Thats what stood out to me more than anything.
Russ's entire play style is hes not going to lose the game for you. I get why it can be frustrating for a HoF QB like you Kurt. But thats what makes this game so beautiful, theres more than one way to play QB! Creating with your legs is almost a necessity in this age. Rodgers relied on it more than people think. And after injury hes lost that part of his game. DL/LBs have never been faster, you cant get by on just processing alone. Yea Tom did it, but hes Tom. He also brought his playbook down there to Tampa. This is Russ's 5th Offense in 5 consecutive years. So yeah take the checkdown and get to it right away for 6 a pop, aslong as the chains are moving and we're burning clock thats a win.
And when its 4th Quarter go be the best version of you. Which even in Denver last year he was the #1 rated QB in the 4th Q. And since he came back hes still the #1 rated QB in the 4th. Pick your spots through 3 Qs and turn it on in the 4th. Perplexing I know, but you cant deny its a winning formula that Pete obviously engraved in him while in Seattle.

Tomlin has a different game plan for QBs than most, the linebackers are dropping 10 yards in Tampa 2. Means Russ has to dart every ball and makes it hard to throw over the top. He’s throwing underneath to force the linebackers to have to push up and protect the check downs. It opens up things like posts over top, go balls on the sidelines and keeps the defense guessing. My guess would be it was designed check downs, Russ has great pocket presence in this game and getting the ball out quick minimizes the effort of the Oline (who have been hit or miss this year). Tomlin has always had a get the ball in playmakers hands mentality and the check downs gives Najee the opportunity to run downhill on their secondary (a dream for any power HB). When we need it we go for it when we don’t we play conservative. Don’t put Russ in a position to make a bad play if he doesn’t have to. One of Russel’s biggest criticisms is that he holds the ball. Might have been a point of emphasis to get the ball out quick and not the let the NFL’s sack leader exploit you. Offense isn’t Super Bowl caliber so I think that’s why you see poor detail in the routes as well. Guys getting away with running poor routes. Maybe also why Russ doesn’t trust some guys in the seam. Overall Steelers are a conservative offense, they aren’t taking insane shots every play and trying to fit tight windows, they play winning football. Run the ball and use play action to fool a defense into giving you chunk plays. Cincy just seemed like they knew they needed to score and were more willing to take shots to keep up with burrow. To your point when you consistently make the same decisions a team can scheme against you, probably why burrow coughed up the ball twice and had a worse day than Russ.

I do have a question. Russ seems to be one of the most heavily criticized QBs for his play style. How he gets to his reads and the decisions he makes seem to perplex not just you but other former professional QBs. But when you really look at Russ’s body of work he really does seem to be one of the most consistent QBs this league has seen year after year. If he played 17 games at the level he is playing right now he would end the season with 4600 yards 31 total TDs and a 104 passer rating. Which is on par with his career averages. My question is what makes him able to perform like that year in and year out even though the professional analysts and ex QBs seem to take issue with his play style? Love the channel Kurt!

If he takes check downs and get this they are CONVERTING and getting 1st downs....he is not letting play developed. Russ had over +400 yards and he is winning. How about you criticize Aaron Rodgers who keeps losing, but you don't 🤔make that make sense! It feels like you are trying to paint a narrative. Not cool and to compare a Super Bowl winning quarterback, 9 time Pro Bowler, 40 NFL 4th quarter comebacks tied with John Elway, you have only 11 game winning drives...So comparing Russ to your son who no disrespect hasn't done remotely anything close to Russ is just condescending and dick move period. As long as Mike Tomlin know what he is doing and happy with it thats good enough for me. Remember you were the same one who thought Justin Fields should stay QB1.

I look at the short throws as an extension of the run game. Think about it, the all go routes occupies the linebackers and Harris leaks out with a box with zero backers in there. If you look into the analytics I’m sure these plays average more yards than their run game. It helps Harris be more productive too. And you never go broke taking a profit as well. Not all QB’s play the same and think the game the same, this is great coaching because it adapts the plays to the QB’s strength. Gotta be more open minded I think and understand your personnel

  • @menace081

Certainly on the first dump off, it was either 2nd 5 or 3 and 5, so taking that easy throw for the first down is much better than throwing the out route, which as you see when Russ threw that out route the next time, it was off target. He has a good oline now, but in Seattle and to lesser extent in Denver, he had olinemen on skates or getting beat at the snap far too often, so he still has a sped up internal clock that will never get to most reads, and so he adjusted his game to fit that. In a way, Russ's non traditional style can make things hard on a lot of defenses.

Not only that but Russell is known for not throwing to the middle of the field, height is a factor. So the defenses know this and cover the sidelines heavier.

  • @michaelstorz4464

Doubt Kurt reads these but here's why i think Russell might read it that way.
If you throw a wrap concept, that hitch isn't a checkdown, it's the read, and if the defender drops back too much just throw the hitch
If you have a hi lo concept to the sideline and the flat defender gets depth, easy, just throw the flat, a flat route is often run at even less depth than a checkdown hook/hitch but because it's a "checkdown" he shouldn't throw it quick,, seam/hook isn't quite a wrap concept but I still think it's a fine read
It looks to me like it's the read, if that mlb keeps dropping, read it like a wrap concept and just throw the hitch, almost akin to landing body blows, they get sick of it being completed and those lb start to get way less depth, that makes the S responsible for a lot more area and that's when Russell took that downfield shot to Pickens
Also when he threw that big in, the lb were tight to the Los more
Thank you Kurt for the breakdowns

  • @Kobsidian
    @Kobsidian 28 дней назад +2

    In really appreciate the commentary.
I wonder if the answer to your question about his process might simply be:
Russ has been much criticized for holding onto the ball too long. So Arthur Smith may be coaching him to act more quickly, and to turn to his check downs if he has any confusion or doubt whatsoever about how his routes are developing. I think the aim might be simply to change Russ' default setting, which has been to wait and see what develops. Once he becomes more comfortable with this, it would then be appropriate to shift the emphasis of coaching toward taking more opportunities downfield.

At 1:45, he sees the DE is committing to the same gap but when the ball is snapped at 1:47 he sees the DE stunting to the inside gap. The protection isn't there to throw the out AND the middle is wide open as all the DBs have committed to the outside.
If you can't see that, then you are not trying to analyze the play, you're just trying to criticize the man.

Don’t like giving my boys away, but the backer was the read, they know the deep ball is always there. Russ needs to work the short field, while getting Najee the ball in space, with smaller defenders to beat. So we don’t care where the receivers are going as long as they run their guy off the ball. Then we hit it over the top when they take the short field away.

Speed of the game and it’s a sure 1st down. Worked all game long so why not use it as strategy? Acting like a check down for a huge chuck of yardage is a bad thing or that he’s not reading the defense well. I think he read it very well as Najee was wide open on every single one of those for miles.

The first check down he analyzes there wasn't an ILB in sight? Najee was wide open?

Fascinating to watch Jekyll and Hyde QB. Seems like his beautiful throws are immediate 1 read yes or no decisions he makes near snap. The seams and outside go routes against zero and cover 2 especially.

It was intentional to go to quick check down against that defense. Clearly it was good scheming because it went for 5+ yards everytime with one going for 25 or so.

Russell has found his place right here in Pittsburgh...some times it takes awhile to find where you belong...so happy he found it here in Steelers Nation 😊

OMG, Kurt kick rocks. Maybe he is trying to get everyone involved and get everyone hot to close the season. Those dumps are run plays I watched them fail in 2 4 and 1 last lost. And Russ was top 10 QB last year stop this madness and they beat winning teams like chiefs and Bills. It’s crazy how much criticism that Rus gets whe n the only QB in the league that has been to more Superbowls is Mahomes. Stop this madness

Go look at Russ' numbers in the Chiefs and Bills wins. He threw for 100 yds against KC and got sacked 6 times. KC had 5 TO, that's why KC lost.

@ winning is QB stat right. Wilson not a lot of passing your but 3 td against the chiefs. It not his fault his oline was trash and chief D was great last year. Mahomes had 2 picks Russ had none. He got his team the W period. Besides, we all know Payton was trying to sabotage Rus. What about Miami scoring 70 on the Broncos. I guess that was Wilson fault too🤣🤣🤣 what haters. Guy has been to 2 superbowls where is the respect? How many superbowls Josh Allen been 2 or the rest of the league ??? Unbelievable

@squests3139 yeah, you're right. Wilson was the only reason Den won the game. Yeah, Allen sucks, Wilson is prolly best QB in the NFL...prolly ever.

@@YourMachines Russ did enough to win those games. I can name several Qb's who aren't Able to win games no matter what the defense does. This is why so many people are fooled by the so-called elite Qb's who can't even make Superbowl appearances. Brady himself recently said its not about Stats but being able to close out a game

Kurt, can you give an average on the number of misreads of defenses by great QBs vs. RW’s missed reads?

Kurt are you losing your mind! The check down was because Cincy wasn’t covering the middle of the field!

@kurtwarnerqbc this is really insightful. Is it fair to say that you think if a quarterback that knows what they are doing is placed in the same situation multiple times they will always make the same throw, because it is optimal? Were there ever times that you did not go through your progression because you liked a particular matchup?

This is crazy. Russ literally threw the ball everywhere and to different receivers. Kurt I think you’re dragging it. You wouldn’t say nun of this if that was Mahomes
