your videos not only gave me the desire to buy my first motorcycle (a tw of course!) but also the confidence to inflict upgrades on it on my own. i mostly manage that without damaging either the bike or me. in that order.
You are probably already aware by now, but that indent in the center of the steering means you need to rebuild/replace your steering bearings. Great video, thanks for sharing. Always appreciate your level of detail in your videos (on both channels). Cheers!
Great Maintenance video! Your shop practices, and methods are spot on. Great job! I do airplanes, and most other Vehicle, and I would put bearings and races in the steer head of your TW. Good to have maint content, and well described. Very nice!
Thanks 👍very cool. you know about attention to detail. yeah ill have to do that maybe next year haha. for sure. would like to have everything covered on the tw at some point
Thanks man, im even behind on that. Just been working on the van build and posting on my other channel lately. Got some great stuff coming though. I lived in my 4runner for a week with the tw on the back, filmed the whole thing. Its just the editing that takes me the longest. Installing a custom light bar on the tw tonight, and making a video on that.
About the steering head bearings . It is of great importance to replace those . they should NOT have a stopping point in the middle . they should travel free from one side to the other . Other than that great video ,always awesome to see new stuff on the bike , even more when changing old for new .
Yep, His head bearings are shot. I replaced mine because of the same problem. They just fell apart when I took them out. Trust me his are in BAD shape.
So many good videos. I’ve been watching your channel for a few years. Got my Tw almost a year ago and feel like I have a service manual in my memory from your videos. Thanks!

Since you mentioned it in the video, I would love a video on use and maintenance of a torque wrench! I don't have one yet, but plan to add one to my collection. Thank you for your great videos, I am learning loads!
Just getting ready to do this job. I bought the aftermarket universal boots from RockyMtn. I am really thankful you did the comparison between the boots I bought and the OEM. I think aftermarket will be okay for the old Dub.
Inspiring me to change the boots on the '09. Got those aftermarket ones last year for that special day. Love your detailed instructions. Very thorough. Seems the OEMs are running around $40 apiece now days vs. $17 (2 of) for the aftermarket. As the saying; Get what you pay for...
glad to hear. yeah the oem ones should not cost 80 bucks for the set, that's just crazy. how are the aftermarket ones holding up. im putting the aftermarket ones after these tear someday. that is usually true though
Hope all is well. Carefull w speed on those single tracks. I stocked up on that used excercise equipment, working will in my 50s! Ride safe. From CT, U.S.A. @@TDubsKid That's great to hear. I'm in my mid 50s and fortunate I took care of myself (fitness). You look a lot stronger these days than I remember in past videos. Good for you.
Tdubs you have the best channel for any TW owner. Could you please show how to clean the carburettor of the TW in one of your future videos? Many thanks
Good video, when your head bearing are notchy, it is an indication you need to replace them. At least with a Yamaha you can do the job. I've got a BMW F650GS which requires special BMW tools to adjust the bearing.
Like your videos. Watch them all. You definitely need steering stem bearings. That notch should not be there. It will cause the bike to fall into a corner and be more apt to squirm in a straight line. It's not dangerous, but your bike will feel better when they are replaced. Getting the preset pressure on the new bearing is a little tricky. Too tight and it will be hard to start and get out of a turn, too loose and it will be hard to hold a steady ark in a turn.
Yes! The steering stem bearings should definitely be replaced. Those are ball bearings and when they wear, they create that notch when the forks are pointed towards center. That notch will get deeper as they continue to wear and the bike will become more difficult to turn. Best to replace them with tapered (needle) bearings and races.
@@TDubsKid It's easy not to notice the difference in the bike until after they are replaced because it takes so long for them to wear. Think frog in cold water slowly warming to a boil. Thanks again for another video.
Great vid man!! Have you rebuilt the forks yet? Just did them on my wifes bike and they werent too bad. I was amazed with the junk that came out of them lol. Cant wait till the next one!
pro tip, keep your fingers away from the holes in the brake caliper when removing/installing the front tire. You could end up with a shattered finger nail or worse...ask me how I know....
Yup just cutt the hell out of my finger on a brake disc few days ago… those discs can get razor sharp on the edges.. be mindful when handling or cleaning around brakes
interesting, as long as they do the job oem always seems to work better but hard to justify that crazy price. could just be that they are not venting and causing that noise. (reason oem ones have those holes at the bottom)
I stumbled upon your channel and absolutely love your content and video's. I recently sold off my street touring (K1600B) for a F750GS to get back into some trail/dirt riding I use to do in my 20's some 30 years ago. I like your Klim pant review. A few video's ago you are riding with a buddy on a red Honda, he went down and hurt his ribs. I went down a month ago, same thing. Twisted my left ankle and left rib cage. After a month they are still sore. Upgraded my boots to Sidi Adventure 2 and just bought Alpinstar bionic action chest protector. I would love to see if you could make a video of your riding safety gear. Fo you recommend knee braces or other protection. Dirt/trail riding is definitely different from just street. Going to be 58 and need all the advice you can give with your experience. Thank you Gary

yeah it's a harbor freight motorcycle lift, works great. I use it for other things too like removing fuel tanks and lowering differentials. would be great for transmissions too
8:00 i think the steering has developed a notch in the bearing race. It's a sign of needing replacement on other bikes. Did you get around to replacing it?
it's all good, the job is really easy, the filming and editing is what takes all the time. now I can always reference this video so I don't have to show the same process. it will be ok for a while longer
@@TDubsKid yeah now that you mention it I heard lots of people talk about how editing footage is much more time consuming then the actual thing being filmed. Zack and Ari once talked about how having a film crew slowed them down when going on adventures and specifically when fixing a tire because the crew had to setup shots and crap like that.
